Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a catalyst supporting method for a fuel cell in which a catalytic metal precursor is electrochemically reduced.
A fuel cell converts the chemical energy associated with the oxidation-reduction reaction directly into electrical energy by electrochemically oxidizing fuel such as hydrogen, methanol, or hydrocarbon in the cell, and by reducing oxygen, air, etc. It is attracting attention as a clean electrical energy source.
The fuel cell has a layer structure of anode gas diffusion layer / anode catalyst layer / proton conductive polymer membrane / cathode catalyst layer / cathode diffusion layer. In the anode catalyst layer and the cathode catalyst layer of this fuel cell, a so-called platinum (platinum alloy) -supported carbon catalyst in which platinum or a platinum alloy is supported on the surface of a conductive carbon carrier at a nano level is used.
According to the technique described above, an electron conductive material such as carbon black is usually used as a catalyst carrier. Then, the catalyst-carrying carbon carrying the catalytically active substance in a highly dispersed state on the catalyst carrier and the ion conductive solid electrolyte solution are mixed to form a mixture. (In addition to this, there is a combination in which a solvent such as water or alcohol or a water repellent such as Teflon is added as necessary.)
Then, this mixture is applied onto the gas diffusion layer or the proton conductive polymer membrane by a roll coating method, a spray method, a doctor blade method or the like, and then dried to form a catalyst layer. Further, hot pressing is generally performed so that the layer structure has the order of anode gas diffusion layer / anode catalyst layer / proton conductive polymer membrane / cathode catalyst layer / cathode gas diffusion layer.
By the way, separately from such a general electrode manufacturing method, a fuel cell electrode material containing carbon particles and a cation exchange resin is used, and ions of a counter ion of the cation exchange resin and a cation containing a catalyst metal are used. A catalyst supporting technique is disclosed in which a cation of a catalyst metal is adsorbed on an ion exchange resin by an exchange reaction, and then the cation of the catalyst metal is reduced with hydrogen to deposit the catalyst metal on carbon particles (Patent Document). 1, 2, 3).
In any of the
Also in the reduction method, in Patent Document 4, an inert gas such as nitrogen is allowed to flow through both the anode and the cathode, and a large current is forcibly passed between both electrodes using a power source, or a voltage of several volts is applied. However, such a reduction method requires a large electrolysis facility in terms of equipment and increases the manufacturing cost. Furthermore, although the catalytic metal cation is reduced during electrolytic reduction, if there is something that is oxidized on the anode and cathode, the electrode constituent material may be subject to oxidation. As a result, there is a limit in improving the catalyst activity and the cell voltage.
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and can provide a catalyst loading method for a fuel cell that is advantageous for obtaining a fuel cell having high catalyst activity and high cell voltage.
The fuel cell catalyst carrying method according to
An oxidation reaction is generated in one of the anode and the cathode, and a reduction reaction is performed in the other of the anode and the cathode based on electrons generated in the oxidation reaction, and the catalytic metal precursor contained in the other is reduced. And carrying out a catalyst supporting step of generating a catalytic metal.

According to the present invention, the laminate is formed by arranging the anode gas diffusion layer, the anode catalyst layer, the ion exchange membrane, the cathode catalyst layer, and the cathode gas diffusion layer in this order from one direction to the other direction. Anyway. Alternatively, the laminate may be formed by arranging the anode gas diffusion layer, the anode catalyst layer, the ion exchange membrane, the cathode catalyst layer, and the cathode gas diffusion layer in this order from the other direction.
According to the fuel cell catalyst supporting method according to
According to the fuel cell catalyst supporting method according to
According to the fuel cell catalyst supporting method according to aspect 4, in addition to the above-described features, in the catalyst supporting step, an inert gas or air is supplied to the other. Even if electrons (e − ) are supplied to the other side, the inert gas is not reduced, so that the catalytic metal precursor can be efficiently reduced on the other side. Examples of the inert gas include nitrogen gas and argon gas. Even when air is used in place of the inert gas, according to the test according to Example 2 described later conducted by the present inventor, the catalyst metal precursor can be reduced on the other side to generate the catalyst metal. did it.
According to the fuel cell catalyst supporting method according to
According to the fuel cell catalyst supporting method according to
Here, a part of the cation containing the catalyst metal adsorbs the cation containing the catalyst metal to the cation exchange resin by an ion exchange reaction between the counter ion of the cation exchange resin and the cation containing the catalyst metal. . The cation containing the remaining catalytic metal is adsorbed on carbon black (electron conductor) having electron conductivity. Thereafter, a catalyst supporting step is performed to reduce the catalyst metal precursor, and the catalyst metal particles are supported on the cation exchange resin and carbon black. That is, when the catalytic metal precursor is reduced, it is formed into fine cation exchange resin and carbon black as fine catalytic metal particles.
By adjusting the concentration of the composition described above or controlling the amount of the catalyst metal precursor in the composition described above, the amount of catalyst metal produced in the cation exchange resin and carbon black can be controlled. If the catalyst metal is supported in an excess of 0.1 to 2.0 mg / cm 2 with respect to the ion exchange capacity of the cation exchange resin, the amount of catalyst supported increases and the catalyst activity can be enhanced. Examples of the cation exchange resin include those having a sulfonic acid group or a carboxylic acid group, but those having a sulfonic acid group are preferred. This is because it can be easily replaced with a cation containing a catalyst metal or the resistance value is low.
ADVANTAGE OF THE INVENTION According to this invention, the catalyst carrying | support method of a fuel cell with high catalyst activity and cell voltage can be provided.

The cathode paste thus formed was formed into a uniform thin film with an applicator on an ETFE sheet (Aflex manufactured by Asahi Glass) and dried at 80 ° C. This was cut to an electrode size to produce a cathode catalyst layer intermediate. The cathode catalyst layer intermediate was affixed to one side of an ion exchange membrane (GORE-SELECT30 manufactured by Japan Gore-Tex) and the anode catalyst layer intermediate was affixed to the other side of the ion exchange membrane 4. At this time, thermal bonding was performed under conditions of a temperature of 150 ° C., a surface pressure of 10 MPa, and a holding time of 1 minute. Thereafter, the intermediate ETFE sheet was peeled off. As a result, the
In addition, the water-repellent treated gas diffusion base material (Toray, carbon paper) was cut to an electrode size to produce one anode
In the stacking step, the stack was formed such that the order in the thickness direction was anode

Next, the catalyst supporting step will be described. The humidified hydrogen is supplied to the

(Comparative Example 1)
In Comparative Example 1, MEA using platinum-supported carbon (Pt / C) reduced by hydrogen is used. The production of the anode catalyst layer according to Comparative Example 1 will be described. That is, platinum ruthenium-supported carbon catalyst (TEC62E58 manufactured by Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd.), 57% by weight of platinum ruthenium supported on conductive carbon black (Ketjenblack EC), pure water, alcohol dispersion of polymer electrolyte polymer (Aciplex SS manufactured by Asahi Kasei) −1100), and isopropyl alcohol were blended at a weight ratio of 1: 4.15: 2. Then, dispersion was performed so that the secondary particle size of the platinum ruthenium-supported carbon catalyst was 0.5 μm to 1.0 μm, thereby preparing a catalyst paste for the anode.
This catalyst paste was formed into a uniform thin film using an applicator on an ETFE sheet (Aflex manufactured by Asahi Glass) and dried at 80 ° C. This was cut into an electrode size to produce an anode catalyst layer intermediate.
Next, preparation of the cathode catalyst layer according to Comparative Example 1 will be described. That is, 7 g of Ketjen Black EC (manufactured by Ketjen Black International), 200 g of isopropyl alcohol, and dinitrodiammine platinum nitric acid solution (manufactured by Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd.) as a catalyst metal precursor were thoroughly mixed and sufficiently dried. In this case, the ketjen black EC (support): Pt (catalyst metal) = 45: 55 was weighed in a weight ratio. Thereafter, the catalytic metal precursor was subjected to a reduction treatment in a hydrogen stream at a reduction temperature of 160 ° C. for 2 hours, and was precipitated as platinum particles (catalytic metal) on a carrier of Ketjen Black EC to form platinum-supported carbon. Thus, in Comparative Example 1, platinum constituting the cathode catalyst layer is formed by hydrogen reduction at 160 ° C.
5 g of the above platinum-supported carbon, 57 g of an alcohol dispersion of a polymer electrolyte polymer (Aciplex SS-1100 manufactured by Asahi Kasei), 30 g of pure water, and 11 g of isopropyl alcohol were weighed. And it mixed well with the disperser and produced the catalyst paste for cathodes. This catalyst paste was formed into a uniform thin film using an applicator on an ETFE sheet (Aflex manufactured by Asahi Glass) and dried at 80 ° C. This was cut to an electrode size to produce a cathode catalyst layer intermediate. The cathode catalyst layer intermediate was affixed to one side of an ion exchange membrane (GORE-SELECT30 manufactured by Japan Gore-Tex), and the aforementioned anode catalyst layer intermediate was affixed to the other side of the ion exchange membrane. In this case, thermal bonding was performed under the conditions of a temperature of 150 ° C., a surface pressure of 10 MPa, and a holding time of 1 minute. Thereafter, the ETFE sheet was peeled off. Thus, the cathode catalyst layer was attached to one side of the ion exchange membrane, and the anode catalyst layer was attached to the other side of the ion exchange membrane.

(Evaluation)
3 and 4 show the measurement results according to Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2 described above. FIG. 3 shows the current value per platinum unit weight when the cell voltage is 900 millivolts, that is, the catalyst specific activity. Two fuel cells were prepared based on Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2 (n = 2), and the measurement results are shown. FIG. 4 shows the relationship between the amount of platinum carried and the cell voltage when the current density is 0.26 ampere / cm 2 (practical current density region).
As shown in FIG. 3, the fuel cell of Example 1 had higher catalyst specific activity than Comparative Examples 1 and 2.
