Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device, a manufacturing method thereof, and an electronic apparatus.
As a liquid crystal display device, a transflective liquid crystal display device having both a reflection mode and a transmission mode is known. In such a transflective liquid crystal display device, a liquid crystal layer is sandwiched between an upper substrate and a lower substrate, and a reflective film in which a window for light transmission is formed on a metal film such as aluminum is disposed below. A substrate that is provided on the inner surface of the substrate and that functions as a transflective plate has been proposed. In this case, in the reflection mode, external light incident from the upper substrate side passes through the liquid crystal layer, is reflected by the reflective film on the inner surface of the lower substrate, passes through the liquid crystal layer again, and is emitted from the upper substrate side, contributing to display. To do. On the other hand, in the transmissive mode, light from the backlight incident from the lower substrate side passes through the liquid crystal layer from the window portion of the reflective film, and then is emitted to the outside from the upper substrate side, contributing to display.
Accordingly, of the reflective film formation region, the region where the window is formed is the transmissive display region, and the other region is the reflective display region.
However, the conventional transflective liquid crystal device has a problem that the viewing angle in transmissive display is narrow. This is because a transflective plate is provided on the inner surface of the liquid crystal cell so that parallax does not occur, and there is a limitation that reflection display must be performed with only one polarizing plate provided on the viewer side. This is because the degree of freedom in design is small. In order to solve this problem, Jisaki et al. Proposed a new liquid crystal display device using vertically aligned liquid crystal in Non-Patent
(1) A “VA (Vertical Alignment) mode” is adopted in which a liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy is aligned perpendicularly to a substrate, and the liquid crystal is tilted by applying a voltage.
(2) A “multi-gap structure” is adopted in which the liquid crystal layer thickness (cell gap) is different between the transmissive display area and the reflective display area.
(3) The transmissive display area is a regular octagon, and a protrusion is provided at the center of the transmissive display area on the counter substrate so that the liquid crystal is tilted in all directions in this area. In other words, “alignment division structure” is adopted.
In
In
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems, and in a vertical alignment mode liquid crystal display device, it is possible to suitably control the direction in which the liquid crystal molecules are tilted, and the electric field in the vicinity of the electrode wiring. For the purpose of providing a liquid crystal display device capable of minimizing the influence of vectors and, as a result, suppressing display defects such as afterimages and spotted unevenness, and capable of displaying a wide viewing angle. Yes. In particular, it is an object to provide a liquid crystal display device having a uniform display and a wide viewing angle in both a reflective display and a transmissive display.
Furthermore, an object of the present invention is to provide an electronic device including such a liquid crystal display device.
In order to solve the above-described problems, the present invention provides a liquid crystal display device in which a liquid crystal layer is sandwiched between an element substrate and a counter substrate that are arranged to face each other, and the liquid crystal layer has an initial alignment. A liquid crystal layer having a negative dielectric anisotropy exhibiting vertical alignment, and on the liquid crystal layer side of the element substrate, a pixel electrode, a switching element connected to the pixel electrode, and an electrode wiring connected to the switching element; A counter electrode is provided on the liquid crystal layer side of the counter substrate so as to be opposed to the pixel electrode to form an image display region. Of the regions where the electrode wiring and the counter electrode are opposed to each other, The liquid crystal display device is characterized in that the counter electrode protrudes toward the liquid crystal layer in at least a part of the region.
According to this configuration, since the electrode on the counter substrate side is disposed closer to the electrode wiring formed to supply power to the switching element than the image display region, the electrode wiring causes the electrode wiring to enter the liquid crystal layer. The generated electric field can be concentrated on the counter electrode arranged in close proximity. As a result, the influence of the electric field vector can be minimized, and the region where the liquid crystal alignment is disturbed can be prevented from reaching the image display region, so that the wide viewing angle, high contrast, and high image quality can be achieved. Can be obtained.
In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, a transmissive display region for performing transmissive display and a reflective display region for performing reflective display are provided in one dot region, and the liquid crystal layer thickness in both regions is provided in the dot region. The counter electrode protrudes toward the liquid crystal layer in at least a part of the region where the electrode wiring and the counter electrode face each other, and the protruding portion It is preferable that the liquid crystal layer thickness in is formed to be thinner than the liquid crystal layer thickness of the transmissive display region.
According to this configuration, in the transflective liquid crystal display device having a multi-gap structure, the liquid crystal layer thickness on the electrode wiring is made thinner than the transmissive display region, so that the influence of the electric field vector of the electrode wiring can be suppressed. Therefore, a good display can be obtained. In this configuration, it is preferable that the region where the counter electrode protrudes is provided in contact with the transmissive display region. Since the liquid crystal layer thickness is relatively thick in the transmissive display region, it is easily affected by the electric field vector of the electrode wiring, but can be made less susceptible to the electric field vector by the protruding counter electrode.
Furthermore, in the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, it is preferable that the liquid crystal layer thickness in the region where the counter electrode is protruded is formed thinner than the liquid crystal layer thickness in the reflective display region. If the thickness of the liquid crystal layer on the electrode wiring is made thinner than the reflective display region in this way, the influence of the electric field vector of the electrode wiring can be further suppressed, and a good display can be obtained.
In the liquid crystal display device according to the aspect of the invention, it is preferable that the region where the counter electrode protrudes is a band-like region extending along the electrode wiring. According to this configuration, the influence of the electric field vector can be more effectively suppressed.
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention may be configured such that the counter electrode protrudes toward the liquid crystal layer by a convex member partially provided between the counter electrode and the counter substrate. According to this configuration, it is possible to provide a liquid crystal display device that can be manufactured without complicating the manufacturing process because the counter electrode can be partially protruded toward the element substrate side very easily.
In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, the convex member may be provided on the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer. According to this configuration, since the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer and the convex member are respectively formed, it is possible to control the projection height and the step height of the multi-gap structure with high accuracy.
Further, the liquid crystal display device of the present invention may be configured such that the convex member and the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer are integrally formed of the same material. According to this configuration, since the convex member can be formed at the same time in the step of forming the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer, it is possible to provide a liquid crystal display device capable of improving the image quality without increasing the number of steps. .
In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, the electrode wiring is disposed so as to extend along the side edge of the pixel electrode, and the convex member is selectively formed in a region on the electrode wiring adjacent to the pixel electrode. It is preferable to be formed. By adopting such a configuration, it becomes a configuration that preferentially prevents the alignment disorder of the liquid crystal in the region that is placed close to the electrode wiring and is easily affected by the electric field vector, and the effect of the convex member can be obtained efficiently. Be able to.
In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, the pixel electrode includes a plurality of island-shaped portions and a connecting portion that electrically connects the island-shaped portions, and the convex member is close to the island-shaped portion. It is preferable that it is selectively formed in a region on the electrode wiring. According to this configuration, when the pixel electrode is divided into a plurality of island portions so as to form a plurality of radial domains within the dot region, the effect of the convex member can be obtained efficiently.
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes a display area in which a plurality of the dot areas are arranged, and the transmissive display areas of the plurality of dot areas are continuously provided along one arrangement direction of the dot areas, The convex member may be arranged in a boundary region between the adjacent transmissive display regions. According to this configuration, the liquid crystal layer thickness is relatively thick, and therefore, the transmissive display region that is easily affected by the electric field vector of the electrode wiring can effectively prevent the alignment disorder of the liquid crystal due to the electric field vector. Transparent display can be obtained.
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention may be configured such that the convex member is partially formed in a boundary region between the adjacent transmissive display regions. In a transflective liquid crystal display device having a multi-gap structure, a step due to the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer is formed between the transmissive display area and the reflective display area. In addition, the liquid of the alignment film forming material easily accumulates in the transmissive display area (the area under the step), and the film thickness becomes too large, resulting in uneven film thickness and causing display unevenness. In particular, in the present invention, since the convex member is arranged so as to partition adjacent transmissive display areas, such a liquid pool is likely to occur. Therefore, by partially forming the convex member arranged so as to partition the adjacent transmissive display regions, it is possible to improve the discharge performance of an excessive amount of liquid in the alignment film forming material. Thereby, the film thickness unevenness of the alignment film hardly occurs.
In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, the pixel electrode or the counter electrode is provided with alignment control means for controlling the alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules when a voltage is applied, and the alignment control means is a part of the pixel electrode or the counter electrode. It is preferable to be an electrode slit formed by cutting out or a dielectric protrusion formed on the side surface of the liquid crystal layer of the element substrate or the counter substrate. According to this configuration, it is possible to appropriately perform alignment control during voltage application of the vertically aligned liquid crystal, and thus it is possible to provide a liquid crystal display device with a wide viewing angle and high contrast.
In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, it is preferable that a light shielding film is formed at least in a region where the counter electrode protrudes. According to this configuration, the contrast between the image display area and other areas (non-display areas) can be increased.
According to the method of manufacturing the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, a liquid crystal layer is sandwiched between an element substrate and a counter substrate that are disposed to face each other, and a transmissive display region that performs transmissive display in one dot region and a reflective layer. A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device provided with a reflective display area for performing display, the step of forming a switching element, an electrode wiring connected to the switching element, and a pixel electrode on the element substrate; Forming a liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer for making the liquid crystal layer thickness different between the transmissive display area and the reflective display area on the counter substrate; and providing a counter electrode on the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer; In the step of forming the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer, a convex member disposed opposite to the electrode wiring in a state of being bonded to the element substrate is simultaneously formed with the same material as the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer. Special to form It is set to.
According to this manufacturing method, when the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer having the multi-gap structure is formed, the convex member for projecting the counter electrode to the element substrate side is provided, so the conventional multi-gap structure liquid crystal display device High image quality can be realized without increasing the number of steps for the manufacturing process.
In the manufacturing method according to the present invention, the convex member can be formed in a substantially linear shape extending along the electrode wiring, or can be partially formed. When the convex member is partially formed, it can be selectively formed only in the region along the electrode wiring adjacent to the transmissive display region, or selectively only in the region along the electrode wiring adjacent to the reflective display region. It can also be formed.

On the other hand, when viewing the cross-sectional structure shown in FIG. 3, the liquid

The
The
In the liquid crystal display device of this embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, image display is performed as follows. The light emitted from the
On the other hand, when an electric field is applied to the
As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the liquid crystal display device according to the present embodiment includes the sub-pixel 29 formed by dividing the
In the liquid

(Second Embodiment)
Next, a second embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. 4 is a circuit configuration diagram of the liquid
4 to 6 are the same as those in the liquid crystal display device of the first embodiment, and detailed descriptions thereof are omitted. To do.
As shown in FIG. 4, the liquid
Next, the planar structure of the pixel region provided in the liquid
The liquid
The
A plurality (two in the figure) of
Further, in the case of the present embodiment, a

Next, in the cross-sectional structure shown in FIG. 6, a
Although the
The
The

An inclined surface in which the layer thickness of the
In the case of the present embodiment, the
On the
According to the liquid
As for reflective display, image display is performed as follows. Light incident from the outside of the
On the other hand, when an electric field is applied to the
Also in the liquid crystal display device of the present embodiment, the
In the liquid
Further, since the multi-gap structure in which the
Specifically, the
In the liquid
(Third embodiment)
Next, a third embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. FIG. 7 is a plan configuration diagram showing one pixel region in the liquid crystal display device of the present embodiment, and FIG. 8 is a cross-sectional configuration diagram taken along the line CC ′ of FIG. In FIG. 7 and FIG. 8, the same reference numerals as those in FIG. 1 to FIG. 6 are the same constituent elements as those of the liquid crystal display devices of the first and second embodiments. Description is omitted.

Next, referring to the cross-sectional structure shown in FIG. 8, a
The
The
A
An inclined surface in which the layer thickness of the
Further, in the case of the present embodiment, the
With this configuration, as shown in FIG. 8, in the formation region of the
On the
Further, as shown in FIG. 7, the
The
In addition, although the effect of the
According to the liquid
In addition, the
In the liquid
