Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a hydrogen gas generator, an electrolyzer, a solar cell module, and an energy system. For example, the present invention relates to a device suitable for generating hydrogen gas for a fuel cell and its application.
The development of fuel cells has become active in response to recent environmental and energy problems. A fuel cell is a system that obtains electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, as opposed to electrolysis of water. By recovering the heat generated during the chemical reaction, it combines electricity and heat. It is a comprehensive energy system that can do. In particular, the polymer electrolyte fuel cell can be reduced in size and weight, and application to an electric vehicle is considered. In addition, it is expected to be used as a cogeneration system that can use electricity and heat at the same time.
While considering the use of such fuel cells, in order to supply the hydrogen to be used, hydrogen gas is filled into a cylinder at a hydrogen station other than a gas station, and hydrogen gas is introduced into the fuel cell from there. However, when considering the application to residential use, if hydrogen can be supplied by electrolyzing water using solar cells, it is self-sufficient and very clean energy. A system can be realized.
Now, the electrolysis of water was discovered jointly by William Nicholson and Anthony Carlisle of England, but it was discovered in 1800, when Volta It is the same year that the battery was invented. Perhaps the battery used for the electrolysis of this water is still an early battery, and the internal resistance is very large, and the performance is very poor compared to the current battery. The reason why electrolysis is possible is that if the system itself can apply the necessary voltage to the electrolysis system, it can be electrolyzed even with a small current and the resistance of water is extremely high. It is done. In this sense, there is no doubt that a solar cell with high internal resistance is an application example that easily exhibits its characteristics.
On the other hand, a voltage of 1.2 V is theoretically necessary to perform electrolysis of water continuously. However, when an experiment is actually performed, a voltage (4 when a dry battery is connected in series at about pH 7 (4 Bubbles that can be confirmed with the naked eye do not appear unless a voltage of about ~ 4.5V is applied. This is considered to be caused by the thickness of the electric double layer or an overvoltage.
There have been many ideas for electrolyzing water using solar cells, but it is extremely difficult to actually electrolyze water using solar cells. This is because the solar cell uses single crystal silicon and the open-circuit voltage is about 0.5 V. Therefore, in theory, a series structure of at least 3 cells (one cell is composed of one pn junction) is practical. This is because a series structure of about 8 cells is required. In other words, in a conventional solar cell using single crystal silicon, it is difficult to produce a so-called tandem structure. In order to obtain an 8-cell serial structure in this way, the cells must be arranged in a plane. Area is required, and the required space becomes enormous. On the other hand, a solar cell using amorphous silicon has an open-circuit voltage of about 0.8 V and is easy to make a tandem structure, but requires an i (intrinsic) layer with a considerable thickness. Although a series structure of cells is sufficient, the cost of film formation cannot be ignored due to the fact that a series structure of 5 cells or more needs to be made with a tandem structure. Since light is absorbed in the middle, the amount of light that reaches the final cell is almost unrealistic. For example, it is divided into about two cells, and these are arranged in a plane and connected to each other by electrodes. However, there is a problem that an area is necessary.
As described above, when the area of the solar cell itself is increased, it becomes difficult to sufficiently absorb sunlight in a narrow space, and electrolysis cannot be efficiently performed.
In order to solve this problem, there has been proposed a photoelectrolysis device in which a minute spherical solar cell element is accommodated in a transparent cylindrical holding member to electrolyze water (Patent Documents 1, 2, and 3). In order to ensure the decomposition voltage, the low voltage and large current solar cell is not necessary, and the high voltage and low current type solar cell is sufficient. This is a very effective method for obtaining a large amount of hydrogen in a space-saving manner because it can increase the light absorption efficiency of the solar cell itself.
However, since the photoelectrolytic devices proposed in Patent Documents 1, 2, and 3 have a complicated structure, it is very difficult to actually manufacture such a photoelectrolytic device, and even if it can be manufactured, the product cost is high. It is expected to be.

As shown in FIG. 2, the

Next, the operation of this hydrogen gas generator will be described.
As shown in FIG. 1A, when light (for example, sunlight) is irradiated on the hydrogen gas generator, the light enters each
