Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for forming a lens surface of an optical fiber connector, for example, an optical fiber connector having a lens surface at an end of an optical fiber having a core having a small diameter of about 3 to 10 microns and a method for manufacturing the same.
In recent years, single-mode type (SM type) glass optical fibers have been widely used in long-haul trunk systems for optical communications, and the construction of an information network using this type of optical fiber has been targeted.
In the SM type optical fiber, a fiber (referred to as “fiber body” in the present claims and the specification) is constituted by a core having a high refractive index region and a low refractive index cladding surrounding the core, and the fiber body is coated with a resin. Is covered.
Since the core diameter is as thin as 5 to 10 microns, a means for connecting or branching the optical fiber with high accuracy is required when laying the optical fiber. As a collimating optical fiber connector for connecting or branching such an optical fiber with high accuracy, for example, there is one having the following structure.
That is, a collimated optical fiber connector has an optical fiber end disposed at the rear end of a cylindrical connector body made of metal, ceramic, glass, or resin, and the fiber body led out from the end is inserted into the connector body. And fix with a resin material such as epoxy resin. A small aspherical lens having a lens surface of a predetermined shape is fitted to the front end of the connector body through a space in front of the optical fiber core fixed to the resin material, and the optical fiber core tip The output light from the light is made parallel light by the aspherical lens.
By the way, in order to make the output light from the tip of this optical fiber parallel light, the conventional collimated optical fiber has a structure in which a minute aspheric lens is fitted to the front end of the connector body. Since the core diameter of the optical fiber is as small as 5 to 10 microns, the aspherical lens generally has a diameter of about several millimeters.
In this way, when trying to fit a very small aspheric lens with a diameter of several millimeters into the connector body, it is very difficult to align the optical axis between the optical fiber inserted into the connector body and the aspheric lens. However, there is a problem in that the quality, reliability, yield, and cost of the product are increased due to the deviation of the optical axis.
In order to solve this problem, the present inventor proposed, for example, in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 9-15448, a highly accurate optical fiber connector applicable to an optical fiber having a small core diameter and a manufacturing method thereof. .
In the optical fiber connector proposed in Patent Document 1, an end portion of an optical fiber is disposed at the rear end of a cylindrical connector body made of metal or resin, and a core led out from the end portion is inserted into the connector body, and the connector The core portion of the main body is filled with a resin material such as epoxy resin to embed the core, and the lens surface is integrally formed with an ultraviolet curable resin material filled in the front portion of the core at the front end of the connector main body.
In addition, the manufacturing method is such that a core led out from an end of an optical fiber having a thin core is inserted into a connector body, and an ultraviolet curable resin material is injected and filled in a front part of the core leading end, followed by lens transfer. With the surface-formed transfer body pressed against the front surface of the ultraviolet curable resin material, the ultraviolet curable resin material is cured by irradiating the UV light transmitted through the transfer body, and the lens transfer surface causes the front surface of the ultraviolet curable resin material to be cured. The lens surface is transferred to.
In this way, the lens surface is integrally formed with the connector body using an ultraviolet curable resin material, so that the lens surface can be transferred and integrated with the connector body, simplifying the formation of the lens surface, increasing the accuracy, Quality and cost reduction can be achieved.
However, in the manufacturing method described above, since the lens surface is formed on the front surface of the ultraviolet curable resin material injected and filled into the end of the connector body, the transfer body on which the lens transfer surface is formed is pushed onto the front surface of the ultraviolet curable resin material. Improvement is desired in that it requires work to hit and such a work process becomes complicated.
In view of the above improvements, the present inventor in Patent Document 2 (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2002-023015) not only improves the accuracy and quality of a product but also simplifies lens surface formation and reduces costs. A method of manufacturing an optical fiber connector for the purpose of realizing a simple structure was proposed.
The manufacturing method of the optical fiber connector proposed by patent document 2 inserts the core derived | led-out from the edge part of the optical fiber which has a thin core into a cylindrical connector main body, and is in the space part located ahead of the core extraction | drawer end. Injecting the ultraviolet curable resin material to form a reservoir of the ultraviolet curable resin material, and then curing the ultraviolet curable resin material by ultraviolet irradiation to form a lens surface on the front surface of the ultraviolet curable resin material. .
Further, the present inventor in Patent Document 3 (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2002-187139) injects a light or thermosetting resin material into the space of the lens member, and puts the resin material in its opening by its own weight and surface tension. The lens surface is raised to form an optimum shape by controlling the injection amount of the resin material based on the transmitted wavefront obtained by the measurement while measuring the wavefront aberration of the light transmitted through the lens surface. A method for manufacturing an optical fiber connector is proposed, in which a resin material forming a lens element surface is cured by applying light or heat.
The manufacturing method of the optical fiber connector proposed by the above-mentioned Patent Documents 1 to 3 is much easier to work than the conventional method described above, can easily form the lens surface, and can reduce the cost. there were.
However, the optical fiber connector manufacturing methods disclosed in Patent Documents 1 to 3 are still insufficient from the viewpoint of ease of work in the field where the optical fiber connection work is performed, and the connection work is also to some extent. The skill was required and the connector cost could not be reduced sufficiently.
In view of the above-described points, the present invention can easily perform an optical fiber connection work performed in the field without requiring special skill, and can sufficiently reduce the cost of the connector, and a method for manufacturing the same. The purpose is to provide.
Furthermore, the present invention provides an optical fiber connector having a small misalignment between the optical fiber and the lens, and the output light from the connector is a parallel light even when the misalignment is present, and a light transmission loss is small, and a method for manufacturing the same. For the purpose.
In the present invention, the above object is made of a molded plastic cylindrical member, and the cylindrical member is formed with a pore extending in the axial direction, and the diameter of the pore is the outer diameter of the fiber body of the optical fiber. The pore is positioned at the center of the cross-section of the cylindrical member so that the fiber body is positioned at the center of the cylindrical member, and the one end in the axial direction of the pore is A sabo mounting hole for mounting a sabo to hold the optical fiber coating is formed, and a plastic lens or glass lens molded on the extension of the pore is attached to the other end in the axial direction of the pore. This is achieved by an optical fiber connector characterized in that a lens mounting hole is formed.
Further, according to the present invention, the piano wire having an outer diameter longer than the connector length and corresponding to the outer diameter of the optical fiber main body is positioned at the center of the connector, and the optical fiber covering portion is provided at one end in the axial direction. A connector having a sabo mounting hole for mounting a holding sabo and a lens mounting hole at the other end is molded, and after the molding, the piano wire is removed from the connector, and the piano wire is removed to remove the central portion of the connector. The fiber body of the optical fiber is inserted into the pore formed in the sabo mounting hole side, and the sabo is mounted in the sabo mounting hole to hold the coating portion of the optical fiber, and the lens mounting hole is molded. A plastic lens or glass lens is mounted, and the tip of the optical fiber body and the lens end surface of the optical fiber are bonded with a resin adhesive. Optical fiber connector manufacturing method of are provided.
In this case, in order to improve workability, a jig whose outer diameter is smaller than the inner diameter of the lens mounting hole and whose inner diameter corresponds to the outer diameter of the lens is mounted, and the lens is mounted on the jig. It is preferable to position the lens and the fine hole of the connector by inserting a jig along the lens mounting hole.
In order to position the lens at the tip of the optical fiber connector side with a small misalignment between the core and the lens, any one of the following methods is preferable.
(1) Hold the lens with a jig, attach an adhesive to the lens, place a wavefront measuring instrument in front of the lens (on the opposite connector side), and laser light from the tip of the optical fiber opposite the connector side to the core of the fiber body Is transmitted. The laser light is transmitted through the core while being reflected at the boundary between the core in the high refractive index region and the low refractive index cladding surrounding the core. A wavefront measuring instrument is used to adjust the optical axis of the lens so that it is parallel to the axis of the connector body, and hold it until the lens adheres to the tip of the core.
(2) After gripping the lens with a jig and attaching an adhesive to the lens, when viewing the lens through the hollow portion of the cylindrical jig from the front of the lens, the end face of the fiber body of the optical fiber can be seen. While moving the lens in the direction orthogonal to the axis of the core on the front side of the connector end of the core, the end of the fiber body viewed through the lens through the hollow part of the jig from the front of the lens (on the non-core side of the lens) Look at the image. At this time, if a microscope-type adjustment jig is used, centering can be easily performed. When the lens overlaps the end surface of the fiber body that has been viewed as described above, the end surface of the fiber body on which the lens overlaps becomes black. By aligning the darkened portion at the center of the end face of the fiber body, the core and the lens can be aligned. This centering is performed in two directions substantially orthogonal to the axis of the core at the tip of the core on the connector side, so that the lens is not misaligned with the core in both the xy directions. Hold until the lens is glued.
Further, it is preferable that the optical fiber covering portion is peeled off so that the fiber main body is exposed over a length corresponding to the length of the connector in the longitudinal direction.
According to the present invention, the connector body is manufactured by molding, the fiber body of the optical fiber is inserted into the pore of the connector body using the connector body, and the lens is attached to the other end side of the connector. By gluing the main body with an adhesive for resin, a connector can be easily manufactured at the tip of the fiber, and the connection between the optical fiber and other equipment or between the optical fibers can be easily performed at the work site. .
Therefore, according to the present invention, the connector can be easily connected around the equipment that requires the optical fiber connector, no special skill is required for the connection work, and the connector body and the lens are molded in advance. Therefore, it is extremely inexpensive, and the optical fiber can be connected at a low cost.
Further, according to the present invention, it is possible to easily reduce the misalignment between the core and the lens, and even if there is misalignment, the output light from the connector is parallel light, so that no significant light transmission loss occurs. An optical fiber can be connected.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the connector
In order to form the

In order to bond the core of the

(2) After holding the
In these cases, by preparing a resin adhesive having a refractive index substantially equal to the refractive index of the
