Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a liquid discharge head that discharges a solution in which charged particles are dispersed in a solvent by electrostatic force, and a method for manufacturing the same.
Today, thermal-type inkjet heads that heat ink and eject ink droplets with the expansion force of bubbles generated in the ink, and piezo-type inkjet heads that eject ink droplets by applying pressure to the ink with piezoelectric elements are proposed. ing. The thermal type inkjet head has a problem that the ink material is limited because the ink is partially heated to 300 ° C. or more, and the piezo type inkjet head has a problem that the structure is complicated and the cost is high. As an ink jet head for solving these problems, liquid discharge heads that discharge a solution in which charged particles are dispersed by electrostatic force have been proposed (for example,
FIG. 8 is a conceptual diagram schematically illustrating an example of a schematic configuration of the inkjet head of the inkjet recording apparatus disclosed in
Here, the
Further, the
In the
Here, a predetermined high voltage, for example, a voltage of DC 1.5 kV, is always applied to the
On the other hand, when a pulse voltage, for example, DC 500 V (ON: 0 V: OFF) is applied from the
In this way, recording is performed with dots of charged fine particle components while relatively moving the
Also, in the inkjet head disclosed in
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2004-259561 discloses a guide that guides ink from the ink layer to the tip of the sharpened portion by protruding an ink guide member having a sharpened portion from the surface of the ink layer that flows in a direction substantially perpendicular to the ink droplet ejection direction. An ink jet head is disclosed in which a groove is provided in an ink guide member and ink droplets are ejected from the tip of the ink guide member using electrostatic force. This ink guide member is formed by molding a plastic resin.
Further, in Patent Document 4 below, an ink guide member is not provided, and a substantially hemispherical meniscus is formed at the ink outlet by the pressure of the ink flowing out from the ink supply path and the surface tension of the ink. An ink jet head that discharges ink is disclosed.
In order to eject small ink droplets in an ink jet head that ejects ink, which is a recording liquid, by such electrostatic force, it is necessary to form a meniscus as fine as possible at the tip of the ink guide member that is the ink droplet ejection position. There is. In order to discharge droplets having a stable size and shape, it is necessary to keep the meniscus shape as constant as possible. In addition, in order to eject ink droplets with a stable shape and size at a high ejection frequency, the ink reduced by ejecting the ink droplets is supplied to the ink ejection position at high speed, and the shape of the meniscus after ink ejection is quickly ink-filled. It is necessary to restore the state before discharge. In addition, in order to stably discharge liquid with high density and high definition, it is necessary to form a sharp portion provided at the end of the ink guide member at the ink droplet discharge position with high density and high definition.
However, in the ink-jet head described in
Further, in the method for manufacturing a protruding plate, which is an ink guide member having a sharpened tip by polishing an alumina electrode base, disclosed in
Further, in the ink jet head disclosed in Patent Document 3 in which a meniscus is formed at the tip of the sharpened portion that becomes the ink droplet discharge position by the ink that has moved up the ink guide groove, the ink is raised to the sharpened portion by capillary action. For this reason, there is a problem that it takes time to supply ink and ink droplets having a stable size and color material component concentration cannot be continuously ejected at a high ejection frequency.
In addition, the conventional method for producing an ink guide member by molding a plastic resin is such that when the plastic resin is extracted from the mold, the plastic tears without being removed from the mold, and an ink guide member having a desired shape cannot be obtained. A malfunction occurs. Such a problem is a very serious problem when a sharp ink guide member is produced with high accuracy. In this method, it is necessary to arrange a plurality of molded ink guide members with high positional accuracy on the substrate. However, there is a limit to increasing the accuracy of the arrangement position of the ink guide members. There was a problem that the number of processes for the increase also increased.
In addition, in the ink jet head disclosed in Patent Document 4 in which an ink guide member is not provided and a substantially hemispherical meniscus is formed at the ink outlet by the pressure of the ink flowing out from the ink outlet and the surface tension of the ink, In order to form a simple meniscus, it is necessary to make the ink outlet small. However, from the standpoint of preventing ink clogging, the size of the ink outlet cannot be reduced to a certain extent. In addition, the shape of the meniscus greatly fluctuates due to fluctuations in the pressure of the ink that flows out. For these reasons, there has been a problem that fine ink droplets cannot be stably ejected.
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems, and is a liquid discharge head that discharges a solution as droplets by electrostatic force, and can discharge droplets with a smaller diameter than conventional ones at higher density. An object of the present invention is to provide a liquid discharge head capable of stably discharging at high frequency and a liquid discharge head manufacturing method capable of manufacturing the liquid discharge head with high accuracy and high productivity.

In order to achieve the above object, a first aspect of the present invention is a liquid discharge head that discharges a solution containing charged particles to a recording medium using electrostatic force,
A head substrate;
An insulating substrate located on the head substrate and having discharge holes for discharging the solution;
A solution guide member formed on the head substrate and having a tip portion protruding from a discharge hole of the insulating substrate;
An electrode to which a voltage for controlling the discharge of the solution is applied is formed at the tip portion of the solution guide member,
A through hole penetrating in the thickness direction and a recovery groove for recovering the solution flowing into the discharge hole are formed in the head substrate, the through hole communicates with the discharge hole, and the recovery is performed. The present invention provides a liquid discharge head characterized in that a space defined by a groove and the insulating substrate communicates with the discharge hole.
Moreover, it is preferable that the solution guide member of the liquid discharge head has a shape that becomes narrower as it approaches the tip.
In the liquid discharge head, the tip angle of the tip portion of the solution guide member is preferably 60 ° or less, and the radius of curvature of the tip of the solution guide member is preferably 4 μm or less. Further, it is preferable that the solution guide member of the liquid discharge head is made of Si capable of sharpening the tip by anisotropic etching.
In the liquid discharge head, it is preferable that a shield electrode is formed on at least one surface of the insulating substrate.
In the liquid discharge head of the present invention, it is preferable that the discharge holes and the solution guide members protruding from the discharge holes are formed in a two-dimensional array.
In order to achieve the above object, a second aspect of the present invention is a method of manufacturing a liquid ejection head according to the first aspect,
Forming the solution guide member by anisotropic etching;
And a step of forming an electrode at a tip portion of the solution guide member. A method for manufacturing a liquid discharge head is provided.
In the liquid discharge head of the present invention, since the control electrode for causing the liquid to fly is directly provided at the tip portion of the solution guide member, the solution can surely fly from the tip portion of the solution guide member.
Furthermore, by providing the control electrode directly at the tip portion of the solution guide member, it is possible to concentrate and generate an electric field at the tip portion of the solution guide member, so that the voltage required for discharging the solution can be kept low, and the liquid The driving voltage of the ejection head is also reduced. Therefore, an ink jet recording apparatus equipped with this liquid discharge head can use an inexpensive IC having a lower withstand voltage than conventional ones, and can realize downsizing and cost reduction of the ink jet recording apparatus.
Further, in the conventional liquid discharge head, since the solution guide and the discharge electrode are manufactured and supported on separate substrates, the positions of the solution guide and the discharge electrode are shifted due to the warpage of the substrates, and the discharge of the solution varies. However, since the liquid discharge head of the present invention is integrated with the control electrode provided at the tip of the solution guide member, the discharge phenomenon varies due to the displacement of the solution guide and the discharge electrode. Can be reduced.
The liquid discharge head according to the present invention includes a solution guide member between a through hole for allowing the solution to flow into the discharge hole formed in the insulating substrate and a recovery groove for recovering the solution flowing into the discharge hole. Is formed. With this configuration, the solution passes through the through hole, flows into the discharge hole while surrounding the side wall of the solution guide member protruding from the discharge hole, and then on the side opposite to the through hole with respect to the solution guide member. It flows into the formed collection groove. That is, in the liquid discharge head of the present invention, since the solution flows from the very vicinity of the solution guide member, it is possible to quickly supply the solution containing charged particles to the top of the solution guide member that is the droplet discharge position. it can. In addition, the outflowing solution forms a solution flow that crosses a part of the slope of the solution guide member, and a part of the solution is guided to the top of the solution guide member to form a meniscus, which affects the pressure fluctuation of the outflowing solution. The meniscus can be formed stably without being done. For this reason, minute droplets can be stably discharged at a high frequency from the top of the solution guide member having a sharp tip.
The liquid discharge head of the present invention has a shield electrode on at least one surface of an insulating substrate disposed on the head substrate. At this time, the shield electrode is positioned between a control electrode to which a voltage for discharging the liquid is applied and a through hole that is formed in the head substrate and supplies the solution to the discharge hole of the insulating substrate. By adopting such a configuration, the charged particles in the through hole do not act on the electric field generated from the control electrode and in the direction opposite to the traveling direction of the solution. As a result, the charged particle concentration in the meniscus is stabilized. Therefore, a droplet having a stable concentration and size can be discharged from the top. In addition, when a plurality of ejection holes are formed in the insulating substrate and the ink guide member protrudes from each ejection hole, the shield electrode is electrically connected between the control electrodes formed at the tips of the ink guide members. Interaction can be suppressed. The shield electrode can also shield an electric field generated from the wiring connected to the control electrode.
Further, in the method for manufacturing a liquid discharge head according to the present invention, a very sharp solution guide member can be easily manufactured by anisotropic wet etching. By using the technique, a plurality of elements can be simultaneously produced on the head substrate with high positional accuracy and high shape accuracy. For this reason, it is possible to manufacture a liquid discharge head that can stably discharge a solution as small droplets at a high density with a low discharge voltage at low cost. Further, the process can be simplified as compared with the conventional manufacturing method, and the shape defect of the solution guide member hardly occurs. For this reason, compared with the conventional manufacturing method, a liquid discharge head can be produced with high productivity.
In addition, a solution guide member can be formed using a photolithography method, the shape of the solution guide member can be freely designed, and solution guide members having various shapes can be produced. For this reason, it is possible to manufacture a liquid discharge head including solution guide members having various shapes according to the use of the liquid discharge head and the characteristics of the solution to be discharged.
Hereinafter, a liquid discharge head of the present invention and a method for manufacturing the liquid discharge head will be described based on embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings.

The
Here, the
As shown in FIG. 2A, the
A
As shown in FIG. 2A, a through
In FIG. 2A, the
When a part of the
In this way, a part of the
Next, the
Next, an ink discharge operation in the
By the way, when a voltage is applied to the
A
When the drive voltage Vc is applied and the
Next, a method for manufacturing the above-described ink discharge head 3 will be described with reference to the drawings. 5A to 5H are schematic views of the manufacturing process of the ink discharge head of the present invention.
First, a double-side polished SiO 2 substrate 67 is prepared, and a
The metal layers 68 formed on both surfaces of the SiO 2 substrate 67 are etched using the resist
Next, as shown in FIG. 5C, dry etching is performed from the upper surface side of the SiO 2 substrate 67 using the
Next, as shown in FIG. 5 (e), the
次いで、Si基板76表面にSiO2膜を熱酸化またはCVD(Chemical Vapor Deposition)法により所定の膜厚で形成する。
Next, an SiO 2 film is formed on the surface of the
Next, as shown in FIG. 5J, the
Next, the
Thus, an insulating substrate made of, for example, Al 2 O 3 is attached to and placed on the head substrate formed by forming the
While the liquid ejection head according to the embodiment of the invention has been described above, the invention is not limited to this.
As an embodiment different from the above embodiment, for example, as shown in FIG. 7, a
Further, the
In this embodiment, as shown in FIG. 2B, the
The solution ejected from the liquid ejection head produced in the present invention is not limited to ink containing colorant particles, and may be any solution containing chargeable particles dispersed in a solvent, and the type of the solution is not limited.
In addition, since the liquid discharge head manufactured according to the present invention is configured by bonding an insulating substrate and a head substrate, fluctuations in driving voltage due to warping of the substrate can be prevented.
In the above-described embodiment, the control electrode is formed using Au (gold). However, the present invention is not limited to this, and any material such as metal or oxide can be used as long as the material conducts electricity. Metal such as gold, copper, and aluminum is preferable. When the control electrode is formed using a material that easily oxidizes, an insulating film or the like can be coated on the surface of the control electrode in order to prevent oxidation. In addition, the control electrode may be formed so as to cover the entire cone structure as the ink guide member, or may be formed so as to cover only the tip portion of the ink guide member.
In the above embodiment, quartz glass (SiO 2 ) is used as the head substrate, but a glass substrate containing alkali ions such as Pyrex may be used. In this case, an anodic bonding method can be used for bonding to the Si substrate in the manufacturing process of the ink discharge head shown in FIG. Further, in the ink discharge head manufacturing process of FIG. 5F, solder or adhesive having durability against the KOH etching solution may be used for bonding the glass substrate and the Si substrate.
In the above-described embodiment, as shown in FIG. 6B, the shape of the opening of the head substrate through
In the ink ejection head manufacturing process shown in FIG. 5G of the above-described embodiment, SiO 2 is used as an etching mask for forming a Si square column structure by SF 6 reactive gas, but Cr, Al, etc. A metal that is resistant to the fluorine-based gas may be used as a mask.
In addition, in the ink ejection head manufacturing process shown in FIG. 5H, the Si square pillar structure is formed by dry etching with SF 6 reactive gas, but other fine structures such as direct sanding of Si and ultrasonic processing are used. A similar columnar structure may be produced instead of or in combination with the processing method.
In the above-described embodiment, a single-crystal substrate of Si is used, and the substrate is anisotropically etched to produce a sharp ink guide member. In the present invention, the material of the single crystal substrate is not necessarily Si as long as a sharp ink guide member can be produced by anisotropic etching. In the method for manufacturing the ink ejection head of the present invention, as long as a sharp ink guide can be produced by anisotropic etching, the ink guide may be produced using, for example, a compound semiconductor single crystal substrate.
Further, in the above-described embodiment, an ink guide member that is a cone-shaped structure with a sharp tip having an inclined surface with a higher-order crystal plane is manufactured by anisotropic etching. In the present invention, the ink guide does not necessarily have a higher-order crystal plane as an inclined surface, and may be formed of, for example, a (111) plane.
In the above-described embodiment, the tip angle of the ink guide member is 60 ° or less and the radius of curvature of the tip is 4 μm or less. However, in the present invention, the liquid is stably discharged from the tip of the ink guide member at a desired discharge voltage. If the droplets are ejected, the tip of the ink guide member does not have to be formed in such a sharp manner. However, in order to discharge ink more stably at a lower discharge voltage, it is desirable that the tip angle of the tip of the ink guide member be 60 ° or less and the radius of curvature of the tip of the ink guide member be 4 μm or less.
Although the ink ejection head of the present invention has been described in detail above, the present invention is not limited to the above embodiment, and various improvements and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the present invention. is there.
