Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a wave plate that generates a phase difference with respect to two linearly polarized light whose polarization planes are orthogonal to each other, such as a quarter wave plate that converts linearly polarized light into circularly polarized light.
As is well known, optical crystals having anisotropy such as quartz are widely used as this type of wave plate. On the other hand, a wave plate having a periodic structure (sub-wavelength structure) shorter than the wavelength of transmitted light, more specifically, a wave plate in which a grating pattern is formed on the substrate surface at a periodic pitch shorter than the wavelength of transmitted light. Etc. have been proposed. Such a wave plate does not generate diffracted light other than 0th-order light, and also exhibits optical anisotropy (birefringence) based on the grating pattern, so that it has a position relative to two linearly polarized light whose polarization planes are orthogonal to each other. A phase difference can be produced. For example, this wave plate is formed by forming a lattice pattern on a photoresist by an interference exposure method, making a die from the lattice pattern by a nickel electroforming method, and then using this die to perform a hot press method or an injection. It is manufactured by transferring the lattice pattern to a thermoplastic resin by a molding method.
By the way, the transmittance and the phase difference are particularly important properties in the wave plate. As the wave plate, it is desirable that the wave plate has a high transmittance and can generate a desired phase difference with respect to the two linearly polarized light whose polarization planes are orthogonal to each other.
More specifically, the phase difference is represented by a function such as the refractive index of the material of the substrate and the depth of the groove of the grating pattern formed on the substrate. The larger the refractive index of the material of the substrate and the deeper the groove of the lattice pattern, the larger the phase difference can be generated. However, in general, a thermoplastic transparent resin such as an acrylic resin or a cycloolefin polymer having excellent translucency is used for the material of the substrate, and its refractive index is about 1.5 to 1.6. In the end, the phase difference depends on the groove depth of the grating pattern.
Thus, in order to obtain a larger phase difference, a deeper grating pattern groove is required. According to the inventor's simulation, for example, the wavelength of light to be used is “655 nm”, the periodic pitch of the grating pattern is “350 nm”, the duty ratio of the grating pattern (grating width / periodic pitch) is “0.43”, and the substrate When the refractive index of the material is “1.53”, a grating pattern having a groove with a depth of “1500 nm” is required to obtain a phase difference of “90 °”. However, in a wave plate having a grating pattern with a sub-wavelength structure, it is very difficult to produce a grating pattern having a groove of this depth by molding or the like, and especially in consideration of mass productivity, avoid a decrease in yield. It is not possible.
As described above, according to the wave plate described in
As described above, in the conventional wave plate, although the above-described dielectric medium is provided, the phase difference can be improved, but a decrease in transmittance due to the dielectric medium is unavoidable. ing.
The present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and in order to secure a desired phase difference, a film material having a higher refractive index than that of the substrate is provided on the surface of the substrate, and the transmittance is also improved. It is an object of the present invention to provide a wave plate that can suitably improve this.
In order to achieve such an object, the invention described in
In general, reflection of light is caused by a rapid change in refractive index. Therefore, by moderately changing the refraction, the reflectance can be lowered and the transmittance can be improved. In this regard, according to the structure as the wave plate, light incident on the wave plate from the air having a refractive index of approximately “1” is transmitted from a film material having a lower refractive index than the high refractive film. The light enters the high refractive index film through the low refractive index film. As a result, the change in refractive index becomes more gradual than when light is directly incident on the high refractive index film from the air, thereby improving the transmittance of the two linearly polarized light whose polarization planes are orthogonal to each other. Will be able to. In this way, by adopting the above structure as a wavelength plate, even if a film material having a higher refractive index than that of the substrate is formed on the surface of the substrate in order to ensure a desired phase difference, the transmittance Can be suitably improved.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, in the wavelength plate according to the first aspect, the high refractive index film and the low refractive index film are the same as the lattice-shaped pattern formed on the surface of the substrate. A structure is formed by depositing as a lattice pattern having a periodic pitch.
According to the above structure, even when the high refractive index film is formed to ensure a desired phase difference, the periodic pitch of the lattice pattern formed on the surface as the wave plate is maintained. . Therefore, by adopting the above structure, it is possible to more suitably suppress the deterioration of the characteristics as the wave plate due to the fluctuation of the periodic pitch.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, in the wave plate according to the second aspect, the lattice-like pattern formed by the high refractive index film and the low refractive index film is an aspect in which an uneven surface having a substantially rectangular cross section is continuous. The structure is formed.
According to such a structure, the high-refractive index film and the low-refractive index film are deposited while maintaining a certain width, and as a result, the lattice pattern can be simplified. In addition, when the wavelength plate is divided into a plurality of layers partitioned in the film thickness direction at each boundary between the substrate, the high refractive index film, and the low refractive index film, the birefringence of the wavelength plate Can be obtained as the sum of the birefringence of each layer. Here, the magnitude of the birefringence of each layer can be adjusted by the film thickness of the high refractive index film and the low refractive index film. In general, the magnitude of birefringence is approximately proportional to the phase difference. Therefore, if the above structure is adopted, the above-described phase difference can be more easily adjusted to a desired value by changing the film thickness of the high refractive index film or the low refractive index film.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, in the wave plate according to the second aspect of the invention, the lattice-like pattern formed by the high refractive index film and the low refractive index film has a convex surface having a substantially triangular cross section and a concave surface having a substantially rectangular cross section. Are formed in a continuous manner.
According to such a structure, the ratio of air gradually changes along the depth direction in a region having a convex surface with a substantially triangular cross section, and the average refractive index of the region gradually changes from the surface to the surface of the substrate. To do. Therefore, according to the structure, further improvement in transmittance can be expected.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention, in the wave plate according to the second aspect of the present invention, the lattice pattern formed by the high refractive index film and the low refractive index film is a lattice-shaped pattern formed on the surface of the substrate. A structure is formed by selectively depositing on the top of the convex surface of the pattern.
According to such a structure, in addition to the above-described operation effect by using the high refractive index film and the low refractive index film, it becomes easy to ensure a physically high aspect ratio as a lattice pattern.
According to a sixth aspect of the present invention, in the wavelength plate according to any one of the first to fifth aspects, the low-refractive index film is formed by crossing the planes of polarization of the high-refractive index film perpendicular to each other. It is structured to be selectively provided at a site where two linearly polarized lights are incident.
In the wave plate having such a structure, the high refractive index film is provided in order to ensure a desired phase difference. However, when a low refractive index film is further provided on the surface of the high refractive index film in order to increase the transmittance, the retardation may be lowered. On the other hand, in order to increase the transmittance, it is sufficient that the light incident on the wavelength plate is incident on the high refractive index film through the low refractive index film. Thus, it is possible to ensure a desired transmittance while minimizing a decrease in retardation due to the formation of the low refractive index film.
In the invention according to claim 7, in the wavelength plate according to any one of
According to the structure as the wave plate, the reflected light on the surface of the low refractive index film and the reflected light on the boundary surface between the low refractive index film and the high refractive index film interfere with each other and cancel each other. It becomes like this. For this reason, the amount of light reflected on the surface of the low refractive index film can be reduced, and as a result, the transmittance of the two linearly polarized light whose polarization planes are orthogonal to each other can be increased.

The surface of the substrate has a lattice pattern with a constant periodic pitch, and the planes of polarization are orthogonal to each other 2
A wave plate that causes a phase difference between two linearly polarized lights has a lattice-like pattern with a periodic pitch shorter than the wavelength of light to be transmitted, thereby generating optical anisotropy such as birefringence. That is, the wave plate according to any one of
Hereinafter, an embodiment of a wave plate according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. The wave plate according to this embodiment also produces a phase difference with respect to two linearly polarized light whose polarization planes are orthogonal to each other, like the conventional wave plate described above. Used as a / 4 wavelength plate. However, in this wave plate, the above-described transmittance is improved by adopting the structure shown in FIG.
First, with reference to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, the structure of the substrate used for the wave plate according to this embodiment will be described. 1 is a perspective view schematically showing the external shape of the substrate, and FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line AA in FIG.
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a lattice-like pattern is formed on the surface of the
The
The ratio of the substantially rectangular convex portion width W2 to the lattice pitch P, that is, the so-called duty ratio is set so that the phase difference becomes larger. This phase difference correlates with the difference (the magnitude of birefringence) between the effective refractive index of the TE component and the effective refractive index of the TM component, and in order to increase the phase difference, The duty ratio may be set so that the difference between the effective refractive indexes of the two becomes larger.
FIG. 3 is a graph showing the relationship between the effective refractive index of the TE component and the effective refractive index of the TM component and the duty ratio of the lattice pattern. This relationship has been confirmed by a simulation by the inventors.
According to this graph, the difference between the effective refractive index of the TE component and the effective refractive index of the TM component is the largest when the duty ratio is “0.43”. In the wave plate according to this embodiment, the duty ratio of the lattice pattern is set to “0.43” based on the simulation result. As a result, a larger phase difference is ensured.
Next, a method for manufacturing the
In manufacturing the
Next, using the mask, the base is etched using, for example, a mixed gas of C 4 F 8 and CH 2 F 2 . In this way, a master (original device) having a pattern corresponding to the lattice pattern of the
Next, referring to FIG. 4 and FIG. 5 together, the wave plate and the manufacturing method thereof according to this embodiment will be described. 4 and 5 are cross-sectional views corresponding to FIG.
As shown in FIG. 4, when manufacturing the wave plate, first, the refractive index is “2.1” by sputtering or vapor deposition on the entire surface of the
Next, as shown in FIG. 5, on the surface of the high
Further, on the surface of the wave plate manufactured in this way, a lattice-like pattern having the same periodic pitch as the lattice-like pattern formed on the surface of the

Incidentally, on these wave plates, a lattice-like pattern having a periodic pitch shorter than the wavelength λ (655 nm) of the transmitted light, that is, a so-called sub-wavelength structure lattice-like pattern is formed. As a result, optical anisotropy such as birefringence is generated, and a phase difference can be generated between the two linearly polarized light TE component and TM component whose polarization planes are orthogonal to each other. In these wave plates, the lattice-like pattern formed by the high-
First, when transmitting the two linearly polarized light TE component and TM component having the wavelength (λ) of “655 nm” perpendicular to each other through the wave plate having no low

(3) Further, the lattice pattern formed by the high

(5) The low

In addition, each said embodiment can also be implemented with the following forms.
