上記のような不具合を回避するため、スキャナ部1やスキャナ部1を支持する支持体3を頑丈に構成し、スキャナ支持構造の強度を増すことも考えられるが、コストがかかり、重量も増すという欠点もある。しかも、強度アップには限界があるため、ユーザーが手をスキャナ部1の開放側角P4(左側角)に乗せて(体重をかけて)スキャンし画像を採取したり、分厚いブック原稿を手で押さえながらスキャンし画像を採取することが十分考えられる状況では、上記強度アップだけでは危険は回避できない。
そこで、本発明では、想定される一定以上の荷重では、支持体及びスキャナ部に変形を起こさない程度の強度を持つ画像形成装置において、安価、かつ複雑な構造を必要としない部品構成でスキャナ部の変形による画像不良を防止することを目的とする。

ここで緩衝材は、減衰機構を有するものであると、その減衰力を用いて荷重解放後できるだけ早期に振動を収束させることができ、ジターなどの異常画像の発生を防止することができる。また緩衝材は、コイルバネと減衰機構を有するダンパーを併用したものとすることもできる。また緩衝材をゴムダンパーとすれば、低コスト化を図ることができる。
