【0054】

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As described above, in the prior art, a temperature sensor is provided in the print head, and when the detected temperature exceeds a threshold value, the print speed is reduced. However, this method has a problem in that the number of temperature sensors needs to be increased in order to detect a partial temperature rise due to continuous hitting points of a small number of wires, which increases the cost. Furthermore, since there is a time delay until the temperature rises after the hitting is actually performed, this method is difficult to control with high responsiveness, and it is necessary to set a threshold value with a margin, and the throughput cannot be sufficiently increased. There was a problem.
[0016]
Also, control is performed to calculate the duty and to reduce the printing speed when the calculated duty exceeds a threshold value. In the dot impact printer, as shown in FIG. 3A, a rectangle having the printing width W and the paper width L as sides is set as one printing unit, and this is called one frame. A bit map format frame memory corresponding to one unit is attached to the control unit, and one line of characters to be printed in accordance with the print data is expanded in the frame memory, and then bit information is read from the frame memory for each wire. Each coil is driven. In some cases, a plurality of frame memories may be provided to improve throughput and print characters over a plurality of frames. However, the memory capacity increases and the cost increases accordingly. When calculating the duty, the ratio of all dots (on) dots in the frame memory and the ratio of on dots for each wire are calculated.
[0017]
When the printing speed is controlled by calculating the duty, precise control is possible if the duty of all the wires is calculated and controlled for each wire. Further, the temperature rise due to the hitting point affects not only the hitting point in one frame but also the hitting points in adjacent plural units. Therefore, in order to perform precise control, it is desirable to consider not only the duty in one frame but also the duty in a plurality of adjacent frames.
[0018]
The calculation of the duty can be performed by a logic circuit, but in recent years, it is generally performed using a control microcomputer from the viewpoint of cost. In recent years, the performance of microcomputers has been remarkably improved, and the calculation of duty can be performed relatively easily. However, the performance of a microcomputer that can be used in a low-cost dot impact printer is limited in terms of cost, and the throughput decreases as the number of wires for calculating the duty increases. Therefore, it can be said that the number of wires for calculating the duty and the throughput are in a trade-off relationship, and the control without causing the coil to burn out can be sufficiently performed, and the number of wires for calculating the duty can be reduced as much as possible to reduce the throughput. It is desirable to make it as small as possible.
[0019]
An object of the present invention is to realize a dot impact printer that satisfies such requirements, has high reliability, and has a high throughput at a low cost.
[0020]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, the dot impact printer according to the first aspect of the present invention forms at least one group including at least two adjacent driving elements (coils), and includes a plurality of driving elements in each group. The duty of a predetermined period is added to calculate at least one total duty, and the printing speed is reduced when the total duty exceeds a threshold value.
[0021]
Considering the temperature rise due to heat generation of the print head coil, the temperature rise is larger when a plurality of adjacent coils generate heat than when only one coil generates heat. Therefore, if the printing speed is the same, it is considered that the temperature rises when printing solid black. However, as described above, when printing solid black, the printing speed is limited due to the power supply. There are few problems, but rather the temperature rise increases when printing a ruled line with a width of several dots, which is most related to coil burnout. Therefore, as in the first aspect of the present invention, the most appropriate control is possible if the determination is performed using the total duty obtained by adding the duties of adjacent drive elements.
[0022]
The number of drive elements for calculating the total duty is suitably 1/6 or less of the total number of drive elements because of the throughput.
[0023]
Furthermore, the dot impact printer according to the second aspect of the present invention calculates the duty of at least one driving element (coil) and controls to reduce the printing speed when the calculated duty exceeds a threshold value. The drive element (coil) for calculating the duty is sequentially changed.
[0024]
As described above, the number of wires for calculating the duty and the throughput are in a trade-off relationship. If the number of wires for calculating the duty is small, the throughput can be increased (or the cost can be reduced). However, since there are many wires that do not calculate the duty, precise control becomes difficult. For example, when calculating the duty of a certain wire, even if the duty of the wire is small, if the duty of the other wire is large, the other wire may overheat and burn out. According to the second aspect of the present invention, since the wire for calculating the duty is sequentially changed, the presence of a wire with a high duty is not overlooked.
[0025]
When changing the wire for calculating the duty in the second mode, if the detected duty exceeds the threshold, it is not changed. A particular problem with the occurrence of coil burnout is when a certain coil continues to strike for a long time. Since the duty is calculated, the occurrence of burning can be further reduced.
[0026]
Furthermore, the dot impact printer according to the third aspect of the present invention calculates the duty of at least one drive element (coil), determines whether the calculated duty exceeds a threshold value, and reduces the printing speed when it exceeds. However, it is characterized in that a determination result storage means for storing at least the history of the previous determination result is provided, and the threshold value at the time of determination or the rate of decrease in printing speed is changed based on the determination result history. .
[0027]
The heat generation of the coil due to printing propagates to the surroundings, but there is a time lag, and the heat generation due to printing according to the previous frame memory also affects the temperature rise of the coil. According to the third aspect of the present invention, since the threshold value at the time of determination or the decrease rate of the printing speed is changed according to the history of previous determination results, good control can be performed. In addition, the information stored is only information indicating that the printing speed has been reduced, and the storage capacity therefor hardly increases, and the previous heat generation propagates to the surroundings, so that sufficiently good control can be performed.
[0028]
The first to third aspects described above can be combined.

However, the description is omitted here because it is not directly related to the invention.
[0032]
FIG. 6 is a flowchart showing the control processing of the first embodiment of the present invention. In the first embodiment, a group in which a plurality of coils are arranged adjacent to each other is defined. For example, in FIG. 5, the first and

FIG. 7 is a flowchart showing a modification of the control process of the first embodiment. In this modified example, after

[0039]
In this modification, the level at which the printing speed is reduced is changed according to the value of the total duty GD, and the reduction in throughput can be further suppressed.
[0040]
FIG. 8 is a flowchart showing the control processing of the second embodiment of the present invention. In the second embodiment, a group is not formed as in the first embodiment, and the duty of each wire (coil) is calculated.
[0041]
In
[0042]
In the second embodiment, the numbers of wires (coils) for calculating the duty are sequentially changed. As a result, the presence of a high duty wire is not overlooked. Furthermore, when the calculated duty exceeds the threshold value, the wire (coil) number for calculating the duty is not changed, so that the duty of the wire that is to be hit with a more severe condition is calculated. Generation can be further reduced.
[0043]
In the second embodiment, only one wire is used for calculating the duty in one process. However, the duty of the plurality of wires is calculated in one process, and the numbers of the plurality of wires for calculating the duty are calculated. May be changed sequentially.
[0044]
FIG. 9 is a flowchart showing the control processing of the third embodiment of the present invention. In the third embodiment, it is stored whether the printing speed has been reduced in the immediately preceding process, and the contents of the process are changed accordingly.
[0045]
In
[0046]
If p is 1, the printing speed is reduced in the immediately preceding process, and it is predicted that considerable heat is generated even if the printing speed is reduced. Therefore, the process proceeds to step 135 and the printing speed is set to the second level. Go to step 139. If p is not 1 (if it is 0), the printing speed is not reduced in the immediately preceding process, and it is predicted that there was not much heat generation. Therefore, the process proceeds to step 136, where the printing speed is higher than the second level but is at the normal level. Set to a later first level and proceed to step 139.
[0047]
When it is determined in
[0048]
When the PD is equal to or higher than THP, it is predicted that there has been considerable heat generation since the printing speed was reduced immediately before, and the PD is considerably higher than the second threshold value THP but smaller than the threshold value TH, which may cause overheating. Expected to be. Therefore, the process proceeds to step 136, the printing speed is set to the first level, and the process proceeds to step 139. If PD is less than THP, go to step 140.
[0049]
In
[0050]
Heat generated by the print head propagates to the surroundings. The print head is cooled by providing heat radiating fins. In any case, the coil generates heat at the hit point and propagates to the surroundings, but it takes time for the temperature of the raised coil to decrease. For this reason, not only the printing according to the frame memory for calculating the duty but also the heat generation due to the printing according to the previous frame memory affects the temperature rise of the coil. For example, as shown in FIG. 3B, when a ruled line is repeatedly printed at a certain pitch, when this pitch is equal to the printing width W, the duty exceeds the threshold value in the continuous frame memory to reduce the printing speed. Need to be controlled. In addition, since the frame memory that performs such control is continuous, the next high duty printing is performed while the heat generated by the printing of dot data in the previous frame memory is not sufficiently cooled, so the coil temperature is even higher. It is considered to be.
[0051]
However, in order to store the duty in the previous frame memory, there is a problem that it is necessary to increase the capacity of the memory. Therefore, in the third embodiment, only the fact that the printing speed was reduced in the immediately preceding printing process is stored, and the processing contents are changed according to the stored contents, thereby reflecting the influence of the previous printing with a simple configuration. I can do it. Also, coil heat generated by printing propagates to the surroundings over time and raises the temperature of the entire print head, so the duty of individual wires (coils) is not stored only by the information of whether the printing speed has been reduced. However, sufficiently good control can be performed.
[0052]
Although the first to third embodiments of the present invention have been described above, the configurations of these embodiments can be combined with each other. In the next fourth embodiment, the processes of the first to third embodiments are combined.
[0053]
FIG. 10 is a flowchart showing the control processing of the fourth embodiment of the present invention. The difference from the processing of the third embodiment is that a group is formed and the total duty is calculated as in the first embodiment, and the group for calculating the total duty is sequentially changed. The variable n is set to 1 in
