BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a regulator that stabilizes a voltage.
[0002]
[Prior art]
The step-down regulator used when an output voltage lower than the input voltage is required includes a dropper type regulator that keeps the output voltage stable by using a transistor as a kind of variable resistor, and an on-state switching element. There is a chopper type regulator that keeps the output voltage stable by the off-duty ratio.
[0003]
The dropper type regulator uses the voltage drop of the transistor to stabilize the output voltage, and since the voltage drop is released as heat, it has the disadvantage of reducing power efficiency when the voltage difference between input and output is large. However, the design is easy and the noise is small, so that there is an advantage that the application is not easily limited. In addition, since the chopper type regulator controls the output by switching the switching element, there is an advantage that the power efficiency is good even when the voltage difference between the input and output is large.
[0004]
Normally, these regulators have a built-in protection circuit, and the protection circuit always operates so that the regulator itself and the load can be protected in the event of an abnormality such as a short circuit on the load side for some reason. The protection circuit includes various types such as a multi-function protection circuit having an overheat protection function and an overcurrent protection function, a protection circuit having only an overheat protection function, and a protection circuit having only an overcurrent protection function. There is.
[0005]
On the other hand, due to the recent trend of energy saving in general consumer devices and the explosive spread of portable devices such as mobile phones and digital still cameras, it is important to reduce the power consumption of power supply circuits.
[0006]
Therefore, especially in regulators for portable devices, the control circuit of the regulator can be switched between when the load is in a normal operation state and in a standby state, and a control circuit that consumes less power than the normal operation state is operated in the standby state. As a result, power consumption in the standby state is reduced. As a control circuit system, the chopper type includes a PWM system that modulates and controls the pulse width, a PFM system that modulates and controls the frequency, a pulse skip system that switches on / off the switching operation / stop state according to the output voltage value, and the like. There is a combination method with different response characteristics at light load and heavy load.
[0007]
As a conventional regulator that switches the control circuit in accordance with the load state described above, a dropper type regulator shown in FIG. 10 will be described as an example.

[0013]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
The regulator in FIG. 10 can achieve low power consumption by switching the control circuit according to the load state, but it may not be possible to adopt a configuration having a plurality of control circuits from the viewpoint of cost or the like. A configuration without a plurality of power consumptions could not be reduced.
[0014]
Further, even a regulator that is configured to switch the control circuit according to the state of the load as shown in FIG. 10 and can achieve low power consumption is required to further reduce the current consumption.
[0015]
In view of the above problems, an object of the present invention is to provide a regulator that can keep power consumption low without switching a control circuit. Another object of the present invention is to provide a regulator that can further reduce power consumption when switching control circuits.
[0016]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, in the regulator according to the present invention, a protection circuit for preventing element destruction, a state in which power is supplied to a part or all of the protection circuit, and a part or all of the protection circuit. And a switch for switching a state where power is not supplied to the power source.
[0017]
According to such a configuration, when protection is unnecessary, a part or all of the protection circuit can be prevented from being supplied with power, so that power consumption can be reduced. Therefore, it is possible to realize a regulator that can keep power consumption low without switching the control circuit. Further, it is possible to realize a regulator that can further reduce power consumption when the control circuit is switched.
[0018]
Moreover, you may provide the switch control means which carries out on / off control of the said switch according to the output current of a regulator. As a result, when the output current of the regulator that does not require protection is in a light load state, it is possible to prevent power from being supplied to a part or all of the protection circuit.
[0019]
The switch control means may be mounted on a semiconductor integrated circuit device together with the protection circuit and the switch. Thereby, the number of terminals of the semiconductor integrated circuit device can be reduced as compared with the case where the switch control means is provided outside the semiconductor integrated circuit device, and the package can be reduced in size and price. In addition, since it is not necessary to input a signal for controlling the switch from the outside, the power supply design can be facilitated.
[0020]
Regardless of whether the switch is on or off, the regulator input voltage may be in a state where power is supplied to a part or all of the protection circuit at the start of rising. As a result, the protection circuit can be operated when the input power is turned on, and element destruction due to an inrush current when the input power is turned on can be prevented.
[0021]
Regardless of whether the switch is on or off, power may be supplied to a part or all of the protection circuit until a certain period of time elapses after the input voltage of the regulator starts rising. As a result, the protection circuit can be reliably operated from when the input power is turned on until the output voltage of the regulator reaches the set value, and element destruction due to an inrush current when the input power is turned on can be reliably prevented. .
[0022]
Further, a determination unit may be provided that determines whether or not a certain period of time has elapsed from the start of rising of the input voltage of the regulator based on the output voltage of the regulator. As a result, even when the output voltage of the regulator rises due to factors other than turning on the input power, element destruction due to inrush current can be reliably prevented.
[0023]
Further, the protection circuit and the switch may be configured as a MOS transistor. As a result, when switching from a state in which power is not supplied to part or all of the protection circuit to a state in which power is supplied to part or all of the protection circuit, power is supplied to the protection circuit at a quick response speed. Therefore, a safer regulator can be realized. In addition, since the MOS transistor consumes less current, it is possible to further reduce power consumption.
[0024]
Further, a chopper type regulator including an output transistor may be configured such that power is supplied to a part or all of the protection circuit only when the output transistor is on. Accordingly, power is supplied to the protection circuit when the output transistor is in an on state, and the protection circuit can be operated reliably when a current flows through the output transistor, which is safe. In addition, when no current flows through the output transistor, power supply to the protection circuit can be stopped, so that power consumption can be reduced.
[0025]
A plurality of control means having different characteristics; a selection means for selecting the control means for controlling the output transistor from the plurality of control means having different characteristics; and a control means for controlling the output transistor. And a means for supplying power to a part or all of the protection circuit before switching from the control means operating at a light load to the control means operating at a heavy load. As a result, the power consumption in the control means can be reduced, and when the load is suddenly changed from a light load state to a short state, for example, the current supply capability is reduced before power supply to the protection circuit is performed. The control means that operates when the load is small and light load with poor load response is switched to the control means that operates when the load is heavy and the current supply capacity is large and the load response is good. It is possible to eliminate the problem of doing so.
[0026]
Further, there may be provided means for stopping power supply to a control means that is not used for controlling the output transistor among a plurality of control means having different characteristics. As a result, the power consumption can be further reduced compared to a regulator in which power is constantly supplied to all the control means.
[0027]
Further, the control means operating at the heavy load may be a chopper type control means. In the case of a heavy load, the regulator output current is large, so the heat loss in the dropper method is larger than the switching loss in the chopper method. In some cases, further reduction in power consumption can be achieved.
[0028]
The control means that operates at the light load may be a dropper type control means. Since the regulator output current is small for light loads, the switching loss in the chopper method is larger than the heat loss in the output transistor in the dropper method. Can be achieved.
[0029]
In addition, the electronic device may include a regulator having any one of the above configurations. Thereby, the power consumption of the electronic device can be reduced. The regulator having any one of the above configurations is particularly suitable for a portable device such as a cellular phone or a digital still camera.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
An embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings. One structural example of the regulator according to the present invention is shown in FIG. In FIG. 1, the same parts as those in FIG. 10 are denoted by the same reference numerals, and detailed description thereof is omitted.

A regulator IC 31 shown in FIG. 1 includes an

[0034]
In this embodiment, the operating voltage of the circuit provided in the regulator IC 31 is the input voltage Vin. However, an external power supply or a constant voltage source configured in the regulator IC may be used.
[0035]
Further, in this embodiment, the control circuit is single. However, like the conventional regulator shown in FIG. 10, a control circuit having a different characteristic is combined and the control circuit is switched according to the load state. It doesn't matter. By using a circuit configuration in which control circuits having different characteristics are combined and switching the control circuit according to the load state, it is possible to further reduce power consumption. The circuit configuration combining two or more control circuits having different characteristics here is, for example, a circuit configuration combining a chopper PFM circuit and a chopper PWM circuit. In such a circuit configuration, the chopper PFM is used when the load is light. It is only necessary that the circuit operates and the chopper PWM circuit operates when the load is heavy.
[0036]
The switching signal input to the control terminal 11 from the outside may be a voltage or a current according to the usage state of the regulator, and a signal that changes according to the mode of the
[0037]
In terms of protecting the power supply circuit, the protection function is unnecessary in situations where excessive temperature rise and excessive current are unlikely to occur, such as in no-load conditions, and there is no particular problem even if the protection circuit is not operating. Even if the load suddenly changes from a load state to a short-circuit state, element destruction is unlikely to occur in a short time from when the protection circuit 9 starts to operate. Therefore, the switching signal input from the outside to the control terminal 11 is a signal corresponding to the output current Io (a detection signal of an output current detection circuit provided outside the regulator IC 31), and the output current Io is greater than or equal to a predetermined value. In this case, the

In addition to the same effects as the regulator of FIG. 1, the regulator of FIG. 2 reduces the number of terminals of the regulator IC by the absence of the control terminal, so that the package can be reduced in size and cost. In such a circuit configuration, the chopper PFM is used when the load is light. It is only necessary that the circuit operates and the chopper PWM circuit operates when the load is heavy.

[0046]
In general regulators, an output capacitor having a large capacity is used to stabilize the output voltage Vo. For example, in the case of the load current 3A class, a large capacity capacitor of about 100 μF is used as the output capacitor. When the output voltage Vo rises, a large inrush current flows to the output capacitor and the load through the output transistor. Therefore, it is desirable to operate the protection circuit to suppress the inrush current and prevent element destruction. For this reason, when the output voltage Vo rises, it is desirable that the
