Description
【0001】
(Thumbs Up and Thumbs down)機能を利用して、視聴者が提示物を評価することを可能にし、これによりその視聴者が好むおよび好まない番組を区別する。
y=mx+b。
【0039】

[Technical Field of the Invention]
The present invention relates to television program recommenders, and more particularly, to a method and apparatus for making television program recommendations.
[0002]
[Background of the Invention]
As the number of channels available to television viewers increases, the diversity of program content available on such channels has made it increasingly difficult for television viewers to identify television programs of interest. is there. Traditionally, television viewers have identified television programs of interest by reviewing printed television program guides. Generally, such printed television program guides included grids listing the available television programs by time and date, channel, and title. As the number of television programs has increased, it has become increasingly difficult to utilize such printed guides to effectively find the desired television program.
[0003]
Recently, television program guides are available in electronic form, which is often referred to as an electronic program guide (EPG). As with the printed television program guide, the EPG includes ruled lines that list available television programs by time and date, channel, and title. By the way, some EPGs allow television viewers to sort or search for available television programs according to their individual preferences. In addition, the EPG allows for a screen display of available television programs.
[0004]
While EPGs allow viewers to find desired programs more efficiently than traditional print guides, there are a number of limitations that, if they are overcome, allow viewers to identify desired programs. The ability to do so could be further enhanced. For example, many viewers have specific preferences or tendencies for certain program categories, such as action-related programs or sports programs. It is possible to apply that viewer preference to the EPG to obtain a set of recommended programs that are of interest to a particular viewer.
[0005]
Many tools for recommending television programs have been presented and proposed. For example, the Tivo (TM) system is commercially available from Tivo Inc. of Sunnyvale, CA and utilizes the "Thumbs Up and Thumbs down" feature. Allows the viewer to rate the presentation, thereby distinguishing between programs that the viewer likes and dislikes. Then, the Tivo receiver adapts the recorded viewer's preference to the received program data such as EPG, and makes recommendations that follow each viewer. While these currently available television program recommenders help users identify television programs of interest, they have many limitations and, if overcome, will make the effectiveness of the recommendations made. Could be greatly improved.
[0006]
For example, such a television program recommender typically records the viewer's past viewing history in the form of a viewer profile, which includes a number of program features and which have been viewed by that viewer (and (Optionally, not watched) in the program with the number of occurrences associated with that feature. The number of occurrences of a feature in a program watched (and, optionally, unwatched) by a viewer is often referred to as a "feature count". Such conventional tools accumulate viewing history over time, so that when new features are identified in a program watched by a viewer, the number of features where viewing history information is enhanced increases. However, some of the identified features may never occur in other programs watched by the viewer. Thus, unwanted program features are often maintained in the viewer profile longer than necessary. However, there is currently no mechanism to determine whether to remove features from the viewing history without losing important information.
[0007]
Further, with respect to such television program recommenders, changes in viewers' television viewing habits are referred to as "non-stationary viewing preferences" and are not easily discernable. In other words, the aggregate nature of the feature counts in the viewer profile may hide temporary patterns in the viewing history.
[0008]
Accordingly, there is a need for a method and apparatus for recommending television programs that can discern changes in viewing preferences. Further, there is a need for a TV program recommendation method and apparatus that can adapt TV program recommendations to changing viewing preferences. Further, there is a need for a method in a television program recommender that maintains a viewing history in a more efficient manner.
[0009]
[Summary of the Invention]
Generally, methods and apparatus for making television program recommendations based on a viewer's previous viewing history are disclosed. In one embodiment of the present invention, a change in viewing preference is automatically identified. In another aspect of the invention, the viewing history is maintained as a series of viewing history windows, such as a series of continuous periodic viewing history windows. The present invention also allows the length of each individual window and the total length of the viewing history itself (ie, the number of smaller viewing windows) to vary.
[0010]
Other aspects of the invention identify insignificant or non-reoccurring features, which can be removed from the viewing profile without losing important information. In general, a feature (i.e., attribute-value pair) may be removed from the viewing profile if the corresponding frequency for that feature has not exceeded the minimum threshold for a predetermined time period.
[0011]
When the changing viewing preference is confirmed, the TV program recommender disclosed by the present application can apply the created TV program recommendation to such a change in viewing preference. In particular, the present invention provides for the conditional probability of a feature (the probability or likelihood that a program in a class of programs watched (or not watched) by a viewer will have that feature) as a function of time. Allows you to calculate. For cyclical or periodic changes in viewing preferences, such as repetitive changes corresponding to daytime or yearly hours, the television program recommender adjusts the conditional probability of the attribute to one. Or more similar prior cycles or periods. Similarly, for trends or permanent changes in viewing preferences, such as diminishing or increasing interest in a program, the TV program recommender may utilize the most recent window in the viewing history to make TV program recommendations. Can be done, which better reflects trends (of current viewing preferences). Alternatively, the television program recommendation can be performed using a value estimated from a strong tendency.
[0012]
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention, in addition to further features and advantages of the invention, will be understood by reference to the following detailed description and drawings.

[Detailed description]
FIG. 1 shows a television program recommender 100 according to the present invention. As shown in FIG. 1, television program recommender 100 evaluates each of the programs in electronic program guide (EPG) 110 to identify programs of interest to a particular user. [0015]
As described above, the viewer profile includes the number of occurrences of each of a number of program attributes in programs that have been watched or not watched (or both) by that viewer. As the traditional recommender tool accumulates viewing history over time, the number of attributes where viewing history information is maintained gradually increases. Another feature of the present invention is to identify attributes that are not important or reappear and thereby control the growth of the audience profile. In one embodiment, if the corresponding frequency number for a feature does not exceed a predetermined minimum threshold, such as an estimated noise level, during a predetermined time interval, the present invention provides a method for controlling the viewer. Remove a given attribute from a profile.
