Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a method of making a titania-doped silica preform that can be used for making ultra-low expansion glass as well as making optical or acoustic waveguide fibers.
[0002]
Background of the Invention
Halide-containing SiO2The precursor is used for the production of preforms by vapor phase growth methods, such as deformation chemical vapor deposition (MCVD), axial vapor deposition (VAD), and external vapor deposition (OVD) I have been. In the MCVD method, SiO2The precursor is vaporized and reacts with oxygen to form oxide particles that are deposited on the inner surface of the quartz glass tube. In the VAD and OCD methods, the vaporized SiO2The precursors are hydrolyzed in the burner and accumulate on a rotating starting rod (bait tube) in the case of VAD, or on a rotating mandrel in the case of OCD, soot particles able to make. In some OVD systems, the cladding of the preform is deposited on a previously formed core preform, rather than on a mandrel.
[0003]
Various evaporators utilized in such processes are described in U.S. Patent No. 4,212,663 to Aslami, U.S. Patent No. 4,314,837 to Blankenship, French ( U.S. Pat. No. 4,529,427 to Fench, U.S. Pat. No. 4,938,789 to Tsuchiya et al., U.S. Pat. No. 5,078,092 to Antos et al. 58-125633 and British Patent Publication No. 1,559,987. U.S. Pat. No. 5,090,985 to Soubeyland et al. Discloses the use of a horizontal thin film evaporator to vaporize various raw materials used in making coated glass articles. I have. All of the above systems use pyrolytic TiO.2It does not utilize the vaporization system of the present invention where a unique flow pattern is used to vaporize the precursor.
[0004]
Optical fibers having one or more outer layers doped with titania are known to exhibit superior strength and ultra-low expansion properties as compared to homogeneous silica-clad fibers. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 2,326,059 to Nordberg discloses a high silica content by vaporizing Si and Ti tetrachloride into a gas stream of an oxygen-gas burner. A process for making ultra low expansion glass is disclosed. U.S. Pat. No. 4,501,602 to Miller et al. Is selected from the IA, IB, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, IVA, IVB, VA, and rare earth series of the periodic table. The preparation of glass and glass / ceramic articles utilizing the gas phase oxidation process of β-diketonato complexes of metals is described.
[0005]
However, halide-containing SiO2And TiO2The precursor forms a halide-containing by-product, such as a halide acid (eg, hydrochloric acid). Such halide containing by-products are a source of environmental pollution and require collection of by-products and environmentally safe processing. This also increases the preform manufacturing costs as a whole. As a solution to environmental problems, halide-free SiO2And TiO2The precursor is used as starting material for preform manufacture.
[0006]
For example, U.S. Pat. No. 5,043,002 to Dobbins et al. Discloses that polymethylcyclosiloxanes are particularly preferred, with octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS) being particularly preferred. No halide-containing SiO2It discloses the production of high purity quartz glass by oxidation or flame hydrolysis of a precursor. In addition, US Pat. No. 5,154,744 to Blackwell et al. Discloses OMCTS and halide-free organometallic compounds (ie, TiO.sub.2).2Precursor), preferably titanium isopropoxide (Ti (OC3H7)4), Titanium ethoxide (Ti (OC2H5)4), Titanium-2-ethylhexyl oxide (Ti (OCH2(C2H5) CHCH4H9)4), Titanium cyclopentyl oxide (Ti (OC3H9)4), R2Is a methyl or ethyl group.2)4) Or the oxidation or flame hydrolysis of a mixture with these combinations to produce titania-doped high purity quartz glass. Liquid OMCTS and liquid TiO2All of the precursors were flash vaporized in flash baths, each heated to 175 ° C., transported to the oven by nitrogen through heated fume tubing, mixed, passed through the flame of a combustion burner, and turned amorphous. To form crystalline titania-doped quartz glass particles. Thereafter, the amorphous particles are consolidated into a glass body. As above, halide-free SiO2And TiO2Precursors are preferred for use with the present invention.
[0007]
U.S. Patent Nos. 5,558,687 and 5,707,415 to Cain et al. Disclose halide-free SiO2 such as OMCTS.2A vertical packed bed film evaporator (evaporator) is disclosed that has been specifically developed for use with precursors. The evaporator comprises a plurality of packed bed columns surrounding a central tube. Liquid SiO2A mixture of the precursor and oxygen is sprayed onto the top of the column by a set of spray nozzles. The precursor and oxygen flow together down through the heated column. The liquid precursor evaporates into oxygen until it reaches its dew point temperature and then leaves the bottom of the column. At this point, the flow direction changes from bottom to top, causing any higher molecular weight species to separate from the vapor stream. After leaving the evaporator through the central tube, the vapor stream is fed to a soot-producing burner. The same evaporator is preferred for use with the present invention. Both patents include TiO2There is no mention of precursors. Furthermore, this evaporator is made of TiO2At a temperature low enough to substantially prevent thermal decomposition of the precursor,2While evaporating the precursor simultaneously, the TiO2There is no indication that the precursor can be evaporated.
[0008]
WO 99/15468 to Maxon et al. Describes a method for producing titania-doped quartz glass by flame hydrolysis. This process involves the use of SiO2 such as OMCTS.2Precursor and TiO such as titanium alkoxide (eg, titanium isopropoxide)2Feeding the mixture with the precursor in the form of a vapor to the flame;2-TiO2Forming particles and depositing the particles in a furnace where the particles melt to form a solid glass body. Liquid SiO2And TiO2The precursors are placed in separate vessels and vaporized by passing each precursor through a carrier gas, such as nitrogen, to entrain the vapors of each precursor. A bypass carrier gas stream is introduced into each of the entrained vapor streams to prevent precursor saturation. These two individual vapor streams are fed to a manifold and mixed within the manifold. From the manifold, the mixed steam passes through the fume piping and enters the furnace, where the mixed steam passes through the burner flame. Maxon et al. State that titanium alkoxides decompose into higher molecular weight polymers, oxidation products and trace elements, thus altering the vapor pressure of the precursor. Changes in vapor pressure result in turbulence in the furnace that disrupts the deposition of glass agglomerates. Importantly, maxon et al. Propose the use of higher temperatures for titanium alkoxides to increase the vapor pressure of the alkoxides. As a result, the carrier vapor flow rate is reduced, which helps to reduce turbulence in the vapor delivery system and minimize glass deposition in the furnace. According to Maxon et al., By controlling the temperature of the fume pipe, TiO2Decomposition of the precursor can be avoided.
[0009]
Unfortunately, halide-free TiO2Preform production with precursors, especially titanium isopropoxide, has been difficult. While titanium isopropoxide has a boiling point of 232 ° C., titanium isopropoxide becomes thermally unstable at 175 ° C. and produces a gel of higher molecular weight. Further, halide-free TiO2The precursor generally reacts with oxygen to form contaminants. These gels and contaminants are not available for preform manufacture and must be discarded. This waste reduces manufacturing efficiency and increases preform manufacturing costs due to additional waste disposal costs.
[0010]
In the manufacture of titania-doped quartz glass preforms, halide-free SiO 22And TiO2Even with the use of a precursor, liquid TiO2There is still a need for a method of making such preforms in which substantially no thermal decomposition of the precursor occurs. In addition, TiO2At a low enough temperature to substantially prevent thermal decomposition of the precursor,2While simultaneously vaporizing the precursor, the TiO2There is still a need for a method of making titania-doped quartz glass preforms without flash vaporization where the precursor is vaporized. The present invention is directed to overcoming the above deficiencies in the art.

This is achieved without substantially pyrolyzing the respective precursor.
[0014]
The present invention is an improvement over the prior art in at least four respects. First, the evaporator minimizes the thermal decomposition of the temperature-sensitive titania precursor, eliminating the need for periodic treatment and disposal of contaminants by contaminants from the pyrolysis. Second, compared to the current need for two flash tanks, the process of the present invention is simpler, implementing only one evaporator. Third, the process is more robust than prior art systems because the carrier gas flow rate in the evaporator is essentially independent of the respective flow rates of titania and silica precursor. Fourth, there is currently no ultra-low expansion glass production system that can reduce the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) variation between 2-5 ppb / ° C without compensating for changes in atmospheric pressure. Steady precursor flow in prior art systems depends on atmospheric pressure, tight control of flash bath temperature, and carrier gas flow. The process of the present invention does not rely on all of the above variables and maintains steady CTE control with accurate delivery of silica and titania precursors to the evaporator.

Transition metal alkoxides are known to be sensitive to light, heat and moisture, as discussed in WO 99/15468 to maxon et al., Which is incorporated herein by reference. . In addition, metal alkoxides readily hydrolyze in moisture to form metal hydroxides and oxides. Therefore, SiO2The precursor, e.g., OMCTS, is2In order to prevent sediment formation, it should be dewatered or dried until the water content is preferably less than 2 ppm.

The packed bed column 22 can use a variety of materials, including beads, fibers, rings, saddles, etc., which can be made of glass, metal, ceramic or other materials that are substantially inert to reactants. Can be. Preferred fillers include saddle-shaped ceramic elements about 6 mm long. This filler provides a large surface area to packing volume ratio. On the bottom surface 56 of the packed bed column, a gate, a screen, and the like for holding the packing material in the column are mounted.
[0027]
As shown in FIG.2The precursor and carrier gas are metered using a
[0028]
Gas atomization nozzles 32 are particularly preferred where the liquid precursor is dispersed into a droplet cone 58 carried by a carrier gas. Such nozzles 32 ensure uniform contact between the liquid precursor and the carrier gas and uniform wetting of the bed packing. This type of nozzle 32 typically has separate inlets (not shown) for liquid precursor and carrier gas. To ensure uniform operation of the packed bed columns 22 of FIGS. 2 and 3, the liquid precursor inlet of nozzle 32 is connected to a gas pressure equalizing manifold (not shown). These manifolds are subsequently connected to a
[0029]
The choice of nozzle 32 is based on three main factors, including liquid precursor throughput, spray pattern and carrier gas flow. Nozzle 32 should be capable of supplying one or more liquid precursor streams sufficient to meet the needs of the system. The nozzle 32 should also spray uniformly over the entire packed bed. Finally, the flow rate of the carrier gas required to atomize the liquid precursor should be low enough to prevent dilution of the liquid precursor stream below the desired operating level. The carrier gas flow rate should be maintained at a flow rate sufficient to create the desired cone-shaped droplet spray 58. Different nozzles 32 are available for different liquid precursor flow rates. In practice, the orifice size is about 3 mm, the divergence angle of the spray cone 58 is about 60 °, and the pressure drop across the nozzle 32 is about 10 psig (about 6.89 × 104Pa) gas atomizing nozzle 32 operates successfully in embodiments of the present invention and is preferred.

[0034]
The carrier gas and the liquid precursor are simultaneously heated while flowing downward through the packed bed column 22. As each temperature increases, more liquid precursor vaporizes into the carrier gas. This process involves heat flow and carrier gas and liquid TiO.2Governed by the diffusion of vapor through the carrier gas at the interface with the precursor. This process continues until all of the liquid precursor, except for the undesired high molecular weight species of the liquid precursor, is converted to vapor as the gas mixture flows down through column 22. Thereafter, the temperature of the vapor / gas mixture continues to increase as the vapor / gas mixture flows downward toward the bottom surface 56 of the column. The packed bed column 22 equalizes the residence time of the total steam / gas mixture by maintaining a uniform velocity profile across the diameter of the packed bed column 22. The uniform residence time minimizes the thermal decomposition of the precursor. TiO in packed bed column2The residence time of the precursor is between about 0.5 seconds and about 10.0 seconds.
[0035]
The temperature of the hot oil 28 is set at a value that will ensure that the liquid precursor and carrier gas are heated to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the liquid precursor before reaching the bottom surface 56 of the column. You. However, TiO2A temperature below the precursor decomposition temperature should be selected. For example, if TPT is TiO2If it is a precursor, the temperature of the

Where TiO2The precursor flow rate is gram / min, CG is the flow rate of the carrier gas (nitrogen) in slpm units, VP is2Torr of precursor (× 1.33 × 102Pa) vapor pressure in units, PatmosphereIs the atmospheric pressure (Torr):
log (P) = 8.972−297.96 / T (2)
Here, P is a pressure in Torr, and T is an absolute temperature expressed in degrees Kelvin. Equation 2 describes the TPT at various temperatures between 120 ° C and 140 ° C according to ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standard E1719-95, entitled "Standard Test Method for Vapor Pressure of Liquids by Boiling Method". Was determined experimentally by measuring the vapor pressure of

The theoretical prediction at 41 g / min is shown in FIG. 5, which splits the operating conditions into two regions. The “suitable” region includes the operating conditions under which complete vaporization would theoretically occur, ie, temperature and gas flow. The "unsuitable" region refers to the operating conditions under which incomplete vaporization occurs. FIG. 6 is a similar graph for TPT flow rates between 10 and 80 g / min.
[0041]
Three conclusions can be drawn from FIGS. First, the pressure can be any level of TiO.2Since the precursor is also sufficient to carry downstream, the TiO2For any flow rate of the precursor (ie, TPT), no carrier gas is required above the boiling point of the precursor (232 ° C.). Second, the operating temperature of the

Example
Example 1
A series of experiments were performed involving flowing liquid TPT or a mixture of TPT and OMCTS at a weight ratio of 1.0: 5.0 through an evaporator. Table 1 shows the results of these experiments. The evaporator temperature is taken at the evaporator outlet, and the term "preheat" indicates that the carrier gas (i.e., nitrogen) was preheated to about 120C and the liquid was preheated to about 100C. The term "suitable" means complete vaporization and the term "unsuitable" refers to incomplete vaporization. The TPT used had a slightly lower level of decomposition, and a brownish orange color was observed. This suggests that components with higher molecular weight (MW) are soluble in TPT. Components with higher MW do not evaporate and act as dyes. As the TPT passed through the evaporator, brownish orange material collected in the separator. Upon successful vaporization, the resulting material appeared clear. However, if complete vaporization is not successful, the brownish orange liquid and TPT will collect in the separator and then emerge from the evaporator and the vapor stream will have a brownish orange color. Would. The same method as described above was used for a mixture of OMCTS and TPT whose color had been reduced by dilution with OMCTS.
