Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a fuel cell and a method for supplying fuel to the fuel cell, and more particularly to a fuel cell using an aqueous methanol solution as fuel and a method for supplying fuel to the fuel cell.
[0002]
[Prior art]
A fuel cell is a power generation element that generates power by electrochemically reacting fuel with oxygen (oxidant gas). Fuel cells have attracted attention in recent years as power generation elements that do not pollute the environment because the product generated by power generation is water, and are used, for example, as a drive power source for driving automobiles and as a home cogeneration system. Attempts have been made to do so.
[0003]
In addition, the development of fuel cells as drive power sources for portable electronic devices such as notebook personal computers, mobile phones, and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) is being actively pursued. I have. In such a fuel cell, it is important to be able to stably output required electric power and to have a portable size and weight, and various technologies have been actively developed to meet such demands. I have.
[0004]
FIG. 4 shows a configuration of a conventionally proposed fuel cell. In the fuel cell using hydrogen as a fuel, the electrolyte membrane 3 is sandwiched between the hydrogen electrode side current collector 1 and the oxygen electrode side current collector 2, and hydrogen is supplied to the hydrogen electrode side current collector 1, and the oxygen electrode side current collection is performed. The body 2 is supplied with oxygen. The hydrogen supplied to the hydrogen electrode side current collector 1 becomes a proton by the action of the catalyst layer 4 formed at the boundary between the hydrogen electrode side current collector 1 and the electrolyte membrane 3, and passes through the electrolyte membrane 3 to become the proton. It reaches the catalyst layer 5 formed at the boundary between the current collector 2 and the electrolyte membrane 3. The protons that have reached the catalyst layer 5 combine with oxygen by the action of the catalyst layer 5 to generate water. The electrons emitted when hydrogen becomes protons are taken out as current and used as power energy.
[0005]
A fuel cell using a liquid fuel containing hydrogen as a fuel has also been proposed, and one of them is a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) that directly uses methanol as fuel without reforming it into hydrogen. Proposed. In a direct methanol fuel cell, a reaction such as CH 3 OH + H 2 O → CO 2 + 6H + + 6e − occurs on the anode side, and a reaction such as 3 / 2O 2 + 6H + + 6e − → 3H 2 O occurs on the cathode side. It is thought that there is. Protons (H + ) generated on the anode side are transmitted to the cathode side by the electrolyte, and a reaction of CH 3 OH + 3 / 2O 2 → CO 2 + 2H 2 O occurs as a whole, and water and carbon dioxide are generated together with power generation.
[0006]
Further, a fuel reforming type fuel cell that extracts hydrogen from a liquid fuel containing hydrogen such as methanol by a reformer and uses the obtained hydrogen has also been proposed.
[0007]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In a fuel cell using hydrogen as a fuel, it is necessary to store hydrogen in a high-pressure tank or a hydrogen storage. However, the high-pressure hydrogen tank requires a material and a structure that can withstand the pressure, so that the volume and weight of the tank main body increase, and it is difficult to reduce the size of the fuel cell device. Further, since the hydrogen storage element has a low hydrogen storage rate, it is difficult to reduce the size of the fuel cell device when storing a predetermined amount of abnormal hydrogen. Therefore, the relationship between the volume of fuel and the amount of generated power is a factor inhibiting the practical use of the type using hydrogen as fuel.
[0008]
Direct methanol fuel cells have a simple structure and can be made small and light because fuel is supplied directly to the power generator. However, the electromotive force is small and harmful unnecessary substances are generated by the methanol reaction. Problem.
[0009]
In the reforming type, it is necessary to keep the reformer at a high temperature at the stage of extracting hydrogen from the fuel fluid, and the provision of an overheating mechanism and a heat retention mechanism increases the scale of the fuel cell system, making it difficult to reduce the size. is there.
[0010]
Therefore, the present invention provides a fuel cell and a fuel supply method capable of reducing the size of a fuel cell device even in a reforming fuel cell for extracting hydrogen required for power generation reaction from a fuel fluid containing hydrogen. That is the task.
[0011]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above problems, a fuel cell according to the present invention includes an oxygen electrode current collector and a hydrogen electrode current collector, wherein an electrolyte membrane is sandwiched between the oxygen electrode current collector and the hydrogen electrode current collector. A power generation unit for generating power by reaction with hydrogen supplied to the fuel cell, a fuel-side current collector and a reforming-side current collector sandwiching a second electrolyte membrane between the fuel-side current collector and the reforming-side current collector. A fuel reforming unit that applies a voltage between the power collector and the fuel electrode, extracts hydrogen from the fuel fluid that contacts the fuel-side current collector, and supplies the hydrogen to the hydrogen electrode current collector of the power generation unit. And
[0012]
By using a structure in which an electrolyte membrane is sandwiched between current collectors as a fuel reformer and applying a voltage between the current collectors to extract hydrogen, there is no need to raise the temperature to extract hydrogen from the fuel fluid, and heating is performed. Since there is no need to provide a mechanism or a heat retaining mechanism, the size of the fuel cell device can be reduced.
[0013]
In addition, by integrally forming the reforming-side current collector of the fuel reforming unit and the hydrogen electrode current collector of the power generation unit, it is possible to further reduce the size of the fuel cell. Further, by using an electromotive force generated by the power generation unit to apply a voltage between the fuel-side current collector and the reforming-side current collector of the fuel reforming unit, the voltage is used for extracting hydrogen in the fuel reforming unit. There is no need to separately provide a power supply, and the size of the fuel cell can be further reduced.
[0014]
Even if the fuel cell is formed by overlapping the power generation unit and the fuel reforming unit, the size of the fuel cell can be reduced. By using an aqueous solution containing methanol as the fuel fluid, it is possible to extract hydrogen and supply it to the power generation unit even when the temperature of the fuel reforming unit is relatively low.
[0015]
In order to solve the above-mentioned problem, a method for supplying fuel to a fuel cell according to the present invention includes a method in which a second electrolyte membrane is sandwiched between a fuel-side current collector and a reforming-side current collector, and hydrogen is supplied to the fuel-side current collector. And applying a voltage between the fuel-side current collector and the reforming-side current collector to extract hydrogen from the reforming-side current collector, The hydrogen is supplied to the side.
[0016]
By using a structure in which an electrolyte membrane is sandwiched between current collectors as a fuel reformer and applying a voltage between the current collectors to extract hydrogen, there is no need to raise the temperature to extract hydrogen from the fuel fluid, and heating is performed. Since there is no need to provide a mechanism or a heat retaining mechanism, the size of the fuel cell device can be reduced.
[0017]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, a fuel cell and a fuel supply method to which the present invention is applied will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. Note that the present invention is not limited to the following description, and can be appropriately changed without departing from the spirit of the present invention. The fuel cell according to the present embodiment will be described by using an example in which a methanol aqueous solution having a highly reactive OH group is used as a fuel as a fluid containing hydrogen, but the fuel cell is not limited to a methanol aqueous solution as long as the fluid contains hydrogen. .

FIG. 3 shows an example in which two fuel cells 30 are stacked, but the number of layers of the fuel cell having the structure shown in FIG. 1 may be any number. In addition, the fuel supply port and oxygen supply port formed in the housing are made into one, and a fuel flow path and an oxygen flow path are formed inside the housing to supply fuel and oxygen to the current collector of each layer. Is also good. By stacking the fuel cells in a stack cell structure, the power generation units are electrically connected in series, so that the overall output voltage can be increased.
[0040]
By packaging the fuel cell 30 as in the example shown in FIG. 3, the handling of the fuel cell package is facilitated, and the fuel cell package is easily mounted on an electronic device or the like.

【The invention's effect】
By using a structure in which an electrolyte membrane is sandwiched between current collectors as a fuel reformer and applying a voltage between the current collectors to extract hydrogen, there is no need to raise the temperature to extract hydrogen from the fuel fluid, and heating is performed. Since there is no need to provide a mechanism or a heat retaining mechanism, the size of the fuel cell device can be reduced.
[0042]
In addition, by integrally forming the reforming-side current collector of the fuel reforming unit and the hydrogen electrode current collector of the power generation unit, it is possible to further reduce the size of the fuel cell. Further, by using an electromotive force generated by the power generation unit to apply a voltage between the fuel-side current collector and the reforming-side current collector of the fuel reforming unit, the voltage is used for extracting hydrogen in the fuel reforming unit. There is no need to separately provide a power supply, and the size of the fuel cell can be further reduced.
[0043]
Even if the fuel cell is formed by overlapping the power generation unit and the fuel reforming unit, the size of the fuel cell can be reduced. Since methanol has highly reactive OH groups, by using an aqueous solution containing methanol as a fuel fluid, hydrogen is extracted and supplied to the power generation unit even if the temperature of the fuel reforming unit is relatively low. It is possible to do.
