TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a lighting device and a projection display device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Generally, a liquid crystal light valve used as a light modulation element in a projection display device or the like changes the transmittance of incident light by changing the polarization direction of linearly polarized light. Therefore, for example, when light from an unpolarized light source is linearly polarized by simply using a polarizing plate, the amount of light incident on the liquid crystal light valve is halved, and the brightness of the displayed image is reduced. In order to prevent the brightness of an image from becoming dark, illumination devices using various polarization conversion optical systems have been proposed.
[0003]
A polarized beam splitter (hereinafter abbreviated as PBS) is one of the above-described polarization conversion optical systems.
The PBS has a shape in which a plurality of columnar translucent members each having a parallelogram cross section are sequentially laminated. At the interface of the translucent member, a polarization separation film composed of a multilayer film made of an inorganic substance and a reflection film are alternately formed. A λ / 2 retardation plate is selectively adhered to a mapping portion of the light exit surface of the polarization separation film or the reflection film in the light exit direction.
[0004]
When non-polarized light (incident light having a random polarization direction) including a p-polarized component and an s-polarized component is incident on the incident surface of the PBS, the incident light is first converted into p-polarized light and s-polarized light by a polarization separation film. And separated into The p-polarized light passes through the polarization separation film as it is and is emitted to the outside.
On the other hand, the s-polarized light is reflected almost vertically by the polarization splitting film, and further reflected by the reflecting film. A λ / 2 retardation plate is disposed on the emission surface of the s-polarized light reflected by the reflection film, and the s-polarized light is converted into p-polarized light and emitted to the outside (for example, see Patent Document 1). .
[0005]
[Patent Document 1]
WO 97/34173 pamphlet (pages 18-23, Fig. 4)
[0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As described above, in a conventional illumination device using a PBS, non-polarized light incident on the PBS is transmitted by the polarization splitting film, where p-polarized light is transmitted and s-polarized light is reflected and separated. The s-polarized light was converted to p-polarized light by a λ / 2 retardation plate and emitted from the PBS.
Due to the configuration of the PBS, the area ratio between the incident surface that can convert the incident non-polarized light into the p-polarized light and the exit surface from which the p-polarized light exits is approximately 1: 2. Therefore, when non-polarized light is incident on the entire surface of the PBS, approximately one-half of the non-polarized light is incident on the incident surface and converted into p-polarized light, and the remaining non-polarized light is discarded without being converted. In other words, there is a problem that the conversion efficiency of the light emitted from the light source is approximately 50%, and the utilization efficiency is not good.
[0007]
The present invention has been made in order to solve the above-described problems, and has as its object to provide an illumination device and a projection display device which are small, can efficiently perform polarization conversion, and have high illuminance.
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, a lighting device according to the present invention includes a light source that emits light having random polarization, and one light and another polarization that are linear polarizations orthogonal to each other. Polarized light separating means, provided between the light source and the polarized light separating means, and a polarization converting means for generating a predetermined phase difference with respect to the wavelength of the light to be transmitted, the other polarized light in the polarized light separating means The output surface is provided with first reflecting means for reflecting the other polarized light, and behind the light source, second reflecting means for reflecting light forward is provided, and one polarized light is emitted from the polarization separating means. The other polarized light is reflected by the first reflecting means, passes through the polarization converting means, enters the second reflecting means, is reflected forward again, and sequentially enters the polarization converting means and the polarization separating means. Is characterized by being That.
[0009]
That is, in the lighting device of the present invention, light having random polarization (hereinafter, referred to as non-polarized light) emitted from the light source is incident on the polarization conversion means, and is converted into light having a predetermined phase difference. The light is emitted toward the polarization splitting means. The non-polarized light that has entered the polarized light separating means is separated into one polarized light and the other polarized light, which are linear polarized lights orthogonal to each other, and one polarized light is emitted from the polarized light separating means. The other polarized light is reflected by the first reflection means and enters the polarization conversion means. When passing through the polarization conversion means, the other polarized light is converted into polarized light having a predetermined phase difference, emitted toward the light source, incident on the second reflection means, and reflected forward again. The light reflected forward repeats the same path as the non-polarized light emitted from the light source described above.
[0010]
The other polarized light not emitted from the polarized light separating means is repeatedly reflected between the first reflecting means and the second reflecting means. Since the other polarized light is converted by the polarization converting means arranged in the reflection path, a part of the converted light is converted into one polarized light, and is separated and emitted by the polarization separating means. That is, one polarized light separated from the light emitted from the light source and one polarized light obtained by converting the other polarized light are simultaneously emitted. By adding one polarized light obtained by rotating the other polarized light, it is possible to obtain an illuminance higher than the illuminance of the conventional illumination device, and it is possible to perform highly efficient polarization conversion.
[0011]
Since the polarized light separating means does not emit the other polarized light forward, it is not necessary to provide an emission surface for the other polarized light, and the incident surface and the emission surface can be formed with substantially the same area. That is, the area of the polarization splitting means, the area of the incident surface, and the area of the output surface can be made substantially equal, and almost half of the light incident on the PBS unlike conventional PBSs is not lost. Since the light incident on the polarization separation means is separated into one polarized light and the other polarized light without loss, the light emitted from the light source can be efficiently subjected to polarization conversion. Furthermore, unlike the conventional PBS, there is no portion that does not function on the surface on which light is incident, so that downsizing can be achieved.
[0012]
Further, since the second reflecting means is arranged behind the light source, the other polarized light not emitted from the polarization separating means is reflected by the first reflecting means and returned to the vicinity of the light source. The light is reflected forward by the second reflecting means. As a result, unpolarized light from the light source and polarized light reflected forward by the light source and the second reflecting means are emitted from the vicinity of the light source. That is, the luminance near the light source can be improved, and the utilization efficiency of light emitted from the light source can be improved.
[0013]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, it is desirable to provide a と し て wavelength plate that generates a 差 wavelength phase difference with respect to the wavelength of incident polarized light as the polarization conversion means.
According to this configuration, the other polarized light that has been reflected by the first reflection means and entered the polarization conversion means is converted into polarized light having a phase difference of 波長 wavelength, that is, circularly polarized light, and is directed toward the second reflection means. Is emitted. The polarized light that has entered the second reflecting means becomes reverse circularly polarized light when being reflected forward, and enters the polarization converting means again. The counter-circularly polarized light incident on the polarization conversion means is converted into polarized light having a phase difference of 1/4 wavelength, that is, one polarized light. That is, the other polarized light separated by the polarized light separating means is converted into one polarized light, and transmitted through the polarized light separating means and emitted.
For this reason, almost all of the non-polarized light emitted from the light source can be emitted as one polarized light, so that more efficient polarization conversion can be performed.
[0014]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, it is desirable to provide a random phase difference plate for generating a random phase difference with respect to the wavelength of the incident polarized light as the polarization conversion means.
According to this configuration, the other polarized light that has been reflected by the first reflecting means and entered the polarization conversion means is converted into polarized light having a random phase difference, and is emitted toward the second reflecting means. The polarized light that has entered the second reflecting means is reflected forward, enters the polarization converting means again, is converted into polarized light having a random phase difference, and becomes non-polarized light. In other words, the state is the same as when the light is emitted from the light source, and is again separated into one polarized light and the other polarized light by the polarization separating means.
For this reason, by repeating the above process, almost all of the non-polarized light emitted from the light source can be emitted as one polarized light, so that more efficient polarization conversion can be performed.
[0015]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, it is desirable to provide a phase difference film that generates a predetermined phase difference with respect to the wavelength of the incident polarized light, as the polarization conversion means.
According to this configuration, since the thickness of the retardation film is thin and in the form of a film, no space is required for disposing the retardation film, and it is easy to reduce the size.
In addition, since the retardation film can be attached to the surface of the polarized light separating means on which non-polarized light enters, the polarized light separating means and the retardation film can be handled as the same component, and the lighting device can be easily manufactured.
[0016]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, it is desirable to provide a polarization beam splitter (PBS) as the polarization separation means.
According to this configuration, since the PBS originally has a flat plate shape, a space is not required for disposing the PBS, and it is easy to reduce the size of the illumination device.
[0017]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, it is desirable to provide a parallel light converting means for converting the light emitted from the light source into parallel light between the light source and the polarization conversion means.
According to this configuration, the light emitted from the light source and transmitted through the parallel light conversion unit becomes parallel light, so that light does not leak when transmitting through the polarization conversion unit and the polarization separation unit. Since no light leaks, the non-polarized light emitted from the light source is converted into one polarized light and emitted without loss, and more efficient polarization conversion can be performed.
[0018]
The light collimating means condenses the light reflected by the first reflecting means on a light source. Since the second reflecting means is disposed behind the light source, the light collected on the light source is reflected forward. That is, since the light reflected by the first reflecting means can be reflected forward again without leaking, more efficient polarization conversion can be performed.
[0019]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, a light emitting diode (Light Emitting Diode, hereinafter abbreviated as LED) can be used as a light source.
At present, LEDs with high output for each color light such as R, G, B, etc. are provided, and since these kinds of LEDs can be arranged in an array in a plane or a curved surface, the size of the light source can be reduced. be able to. Therefore, a light source suitable for the lighting device of the present invention can be obtained.
In addition, since the LED can emit monochromatic light having a narrow wavelength band, the polarization conversion means only needs to convert light in the above wavelength band. When only the light in the above-mentioned wavelength band is converted as compared with the case where the light having a wide band wavelength is converted, the amount of conversion can be easily adjusted, and more efficient polarization conversion can be performed.
[0020]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, the surface on the light source side of the second reflecting means may be formed in a concave curved shape.
According to this configuration, the light incident on the second reflection means is focused toward the front polarization conversion means without distinction between the light emitted from the light source and the light reflected on the first reflection means. Is reflected as you do. Therefore, the proportion of the light propagating from the second reflection unit to the polarization conversion unit that does not enter the polarization conversion unit is reduced, and more efficient polarization conversion can be performed.
[0021]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, the surface on the light source side of the second reflection means may be formed in a planar shape.
According to this configuration, since the light-reflecting surface is formed as a flat surface, the labor required for processes such as processing and polishing is reduced, and the production can be facilitated.
[0022]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, the light source and the second reflection unit are arranged offset from the optical axes of the polarization conversion unit and the polarization separation unit, and the third reflection unit is provided for the light source. The third reflecting means may be provided in the vicinity so that the light reflected by the first reflecting means is incident on the third reflecting means.
According to this configuration, the light emitted from the light source and reflected by the first reflection means does not return to the light source because the light source is disposed offset with respect to the optical axis, and the third reflection light Incident on the means. Since the light incident on the third reflecting means has no element for absorbing and scattering light such as a light source in front of the light, the light is reflected forward without reducing its intensity, thereby performing more efficient polarization conversion. Can be.
[0023]
In order to realize the above configuration, more specifically, the first reflecting means is disposed so as to have an inclination angle with respect to the incident light, and the third reflecting means is provided near the light source; The third reflector may be arranged so that the light reflected by the first reflector is incident on the third reflector.
According to this configuration, the light emitted from the light source and reflected by the first reflecting means is arranged so as to have an inclination angle with respect to the light incident on the first reflecting means, and therefore, is not provided on the light source. Instead of returning, it is incident on the third reflecting means. Since the light incident on the third reflecting means has no element for absorbing and scattering light such as a light source in front of the light, the light is reflected forward without reducing its intensity, thereby performing more efficient polarization conversion. Can be.
[0024]
A lighting device having a light source, a light modulating means for modulating light from the lighting device, and a projecting means for projecting the light modulated by the light modulating means. The lighting device of the present invention can be provided.
