Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image output device applied to a printer controller or the like that supplies image data to a color printer engine.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, the data processing load and the memory consumption of the controller unit have been significantly increasing with the increase in the output image data amount due to the higher resolution of the printer engine. Therefore, there is a method of storing compressed data that can be processed by hardware in an intermediate buffer memory for the purpose of reducing the CPU load on the controller unit, and controlling the DMA controller to transfer the compressed data to output data generation hardware (rasterizer). Became used. (Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. Hei 9-11548)
As shown in FIG. 3, a page printer as an image printing apparatus is connected to a host computer having a printer driver via a network, a USB interface, and the like, and intermediate output data generated from printing source data by a device such as the host computer. And an engine unit that acquires output image data output from the controller unit and outputs the image to a medium such as paper. Intermediate output data suitable for the controller is generated by software generally called a printer driver. Further, the controller unit converts the intermediate output data into output image data suitable for the engine unit, and outputs it as a video signal to the engine unit in synchronization with an image transfer permission signal from the engine unit. The engine controls and drives the electrophotographic process, and reproduces the input video signal as an image on a medium such as paper.
[0003]
In an electrophotographic process type color printer, a high-speed printing method by parallel processing called a tandem method as disclosed in JP-A-9-192542 has been proposed and put to practical use. In the tandem system, photosensitive drums for four colors are arranged in a line, and printing processes for the respective colors are overlapped to reduce the printing time.
[0004]
FIG. 4 shows the print data output timing of the tandem system, a shows a page synchronization signal, b shows a print data transfer request signal based on the page synchronization signal, and c to f show print data transfer timings. As is clear from FIG. 4, in the tandem type electrophotographic printer, it is necessary to transfer each color print data almost simultaneously in synchronization with the page synchronization signal.

FIG. 6 is a diagram illustrating an example of the band designation information creation step (S504). In the code amount table creation step (S601), a total of the compression codes in the block is calculated with a plurality of predetermined lines as one block. Table 1 shows an example of a table showing a block number and the amount of each color code of the block. Y, M, C, and K mean color data of yellow, cyan, magenta, and black, respectively. Next, in an average code amount calculation step (S602), a block average code amount of the target page is calculated. The block average code amount is a value indicating the average code amount of one block. In the band designation information creation step (S603), a band designation information table is created from the code amount table (Table 1) and the block average code amount. Here, a description will be given of how to create a table when performing band control using the burst transfer unit value of the DMA. The DMA burst transfer unit of each block of each color is calculated according to the following calculation formula (1).
[0015]
Transfer unit = standard transfer unit + (block code amount-average code amount) x coefficient ... Equation (1)
According to the above formula, when the total code amount in the block of the color data to be calculated is large, a larger transfer unit is obtained. Table 2 shows an example of an information table regarding band designation calculated from Table 1. Note that the standard transfer unit and coefficient are values determined in advance according to system conditions and the like. In the band designation parameter setting step (S507), the value calculated here is referred to and set in the DMA access control unit 112.
[0016]
FIG. 7 is a timing chart for explaining the DMA operation of the burst transfer. In the figure, BREQ is a high-active signal indicating that the
[0017]
As described above, according to the present embodiment, the DMA burst transfer unit is designated according to the amount of code in the block unit when transferring the print data of each color. Thus, when transferring a block having a large code amount, print data is transferred in large burst transfer units, and as a result, data transfer with high priority is performed. As a result, bus traffic at the time of data transfer of each color is leveled, and the problem of insufficient transfer bandwidth caused when there is a bias in the code amount among the colors can be avoided without increasing the speed of the bus.
[0018]
[Other Examples]
In the embodiment, the transfer ratio of the print data is realized by changing the burst transfer unit size of the DMA. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and any method may be used. For example, there are various methods such as a method of stochastically determining the priority of securing the bus in a competition unit based on a value proportional to the code amount, a method of determining the number of bus allocations of each color DMA at predetermined time intervals according to the code amount, and the like. A method is conceivable. FIG. 8 shows a configuration example in the case where arbitration of bus access is controlled according to the code amount. In this embodiment, the arbitration control unit 89 controls the allocation ratio at the time of bus contention. Specifically, prior to the start of the DMA of the block to be transferred, the information about the allocation ratio at the time of bus contention is specified to the arbitration control unit 89 (corresponding to the process of step S507). FIG. 9 is a flowchart illustrating a process related to the bus access right assignment process in the arbitration control unit 89. In the bus access right arbitration state, the arbitration control unit 89 determines a conflict between the access requests (step S901), and if there is no conflict, passes the access right to the requesting DMA. If there is contention, a random number having a maximum value, for example, as shown in Table 2 is generated corresponding to the DMA of the requested color (the random number may be generated in advance for each transfer). In the assignment determining step (S903), a random number corresponding to each of the generated colors is assigned a priority, thereby determining an assignment target DMA. In this way, by performing allocation control at the time of contention stochastically, it is possible to realize transfer band control of each color data. When the block unit to be controlled is small, band control may be performed by assigning a simple priority in proportion to the code amount.
[0019]
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 8, the bus access control between the colors may be performed by the access control unit of each DMA, or may be controlled collectively by the arbitration control unit of the system bus.
[0020]
In the embodiment, a case has been described in which band control is performed in units of blocks each having a plurality of lines, but the present invention is not limited to such a method, and control may be performed in any unit. The control may be performed in finer units such as line units, or the control may be performed in page units. For example, when control is performed on a page-by-page basis, the code amount of each color in one page is calculated, and each color data transfer band of the page is allocated according to the ratio of the code amount between the colors. When the control is performed on a page-by-page basis, it is not possible to cope with the fluctuation of the generated code amount in the page, but it is possible to control the transfer band between the color data by a simple method.
[0021]
In this embodiment, a method is described in which a dedicated reference table for band control is prepared and band control is performed with reference to the table. However, another method may be used. For example, a method may be used in which band control information is described in a header of code data or the like and transfer conditions are specified based on the header information at the time of transfer. Specifically, a dedicated header area is provided in the code data in a predetermined unit to be controlled, and information relating to the code amount, a necessary transfer band, and the like is described in the area. In this case, there is no need to create and manage a dedicated table, and the structure of the control software is simplified.
[0022]
In the embodiment, the case where the band control is performed based on the code amount of the compressed data has been described. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and the information obtained from the print data before compression and the information obtained at the time of the compression processing are used. Setting information related to band control may be generated based on the setting information.
[0023]
In the embodiment, the case where the present invention is applied to a controller of a tandem type electrophotographic printer has been described. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and a printer engine which needs to simultaneously transfer print data of a plurality of colors at the time of printing. It is possible to adapt widely to

【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, by controlling the transfer band of each color in accordance with the data amount of the print data, it is possible to realize a highly reliable image output apparatus at low cost regardless of the contents of the print data.
