Abstract
Description
【0001】

d=αP−β
d=αP−β
d=αP−β

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an organic EL display.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Organic EL elements are known as EL elements that emit EL light (electroluminescence). The organic EL element has a lower driving voltage than the inorganic EL element and is energy saving.
[0003]
An “organic EL display” in which minute organic EL elements are two-dimensionally arranged in an array is known, and is intended for application to a display of a mobile phone.
[0004]
In the organic EL element, a minute light emitting portion uniformly emits light, and the emitted EL light has almost no directivity. For this reason, the above-mentioned organic EL display has a substantially flat viewing angle of 180 degrees (± 90 degrees).
[0005]
When an organic EL display having such a wide viewing angle is used for a "personal information device such as a mobile phone", the displayed information can be viewed from the side, which is not preferable in terms of privacy protection.
[0006]
As a method of narrowing the viewing angle of the organic EL display and increasing the brightness of the displayed image, the same as the array of minute organic EL elements arranged two-dimensionally on a plane and the arrangement pitch of the organic EL elements. A microlens array formed by arraying microlenses at a pitch is closely opposed via a transparent intermediate layer so that each microlens corresponds to each organic EL element in a 1: 1 relationship, An organic EL display configured to condense EL light emitted from each organic EL element by a corresponding microlens is known (Patent Document 1).
[0007]
The research by the inventors has revealed that the above-mentioned "effect by condensing the microlens" depends on the optical characteristics of the microlens, the positional relationship with the organic EL element, and the like.
[0008]
[Patent Document 1]
JP-A-10-172756
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
An object of the present invention is to realize an organic EL display that can observe a bright image from the front side and can set a viewing angle in an appropriate range based on the knowledge obtained by the inventors through research.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The organic EL display according to the present invention includes a microlens array formed by arranging micro organic EL elements arranged two-dimensionally on a plane and microlenses arranged at the same pitch as the arrangement pitch of the organic EL elements. Are closely opposed via a transparent intermediate layer so that each microlens corresponds to each of the organic EL elements in a one-to-one correspondence, and the EL light emitted from each organic EL element is An organic EL display configured to condense light with a microlens ", and is characterized by the following points.
[0011]
That is, the ratio of the distance: d between the organic EL element and the corresponding microlens: d and the focal length of the microlens: f: d / f is the condition:
(1) 0.1 ≦ d / f ≦ 0.5
Is satisfied (claim 1).
[0012]
“To closely oppose the organic EL element array and the microlens array via the transparent intermediate layer” means that the space between the organic EL element array and the microlens array is densely filled with the transparent intermediate layer. Means that. It is preferable that the intermediate layer has an “physical state”.
[0013]
The organic EL display according to
d / f ≒ 0.3
In this case, the "brightness of the observed image from the front side" can be improved most (claim 2).
[0014]
The organic EL display according to claim 2, wherein an arrangement pitch of the organic EL elements: P and a distance: d between the organic EL element and the corresponding microlens: 0.72 ≦ α ≦ 0.90; For α and β in the range of 14.0 ≦ β ≦ 28.33,
d ≒ αP-β
Is preferably satisfied (claim 3).
[0015]
To add a little, the “transparent intermediate layer” can be the “element substrate” itself formed by two-dimensionally arranging organic EL elements on one surface. Further, the transparent intermediate layer is not limited to one layer, and may have a multilayer structure of two or more layers, one of which may be an adhesive layer.
[0016]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
FIG. 1A conceptually shows one embodiment of an organic EL display.
[0017]
That is, the organic EL display shown in FIG. 1A has an array of minute
[0018]
The inventors set the width of the organic EL element 10 (the
[0019]
The refractive index of the
[0020]
FIG. 2 shows the results. The vertical axis is “light intensity” and the horizontal axis is “viewing angle (degree)”. The graph line 2-1 shows the light intensity when the focal length of the microlens ML is infinity, that is, when the light is not condensed by the microlens array, and the light intensity at a viewing angle of 0 degree. Was standardized as the reference value: 1.
[0021]
As shown in the figure, the light intensity in this case is substantially flat in the range of the viewing angle: -90 degrees to +90 degrees.
[0022]
On the other hand, under the conditions shown in FIG. 1B, the change in the light intensity (the value relative to the standardized value) with the change in the viewing angle is as shown by a graph line 2-2. As is clear from the graph line 2-2, when the light is condensed by the microlens ML, the light intensity is twice or more bright near the viewing angle of 0 degree as compared with the case where the light is not condensed. The “half width” of the light intensity distribution is in the range of the viewing angle: −30 degrees to +30 degrees, and the directivity is also improved.
[0023]
When an organic EL display having such a viewing angle characteristic is used for, for example, a display of a mobile phone, the range of the viewing angle: −30 degrees to +30 degrees is “a range that is easy for a user to see”, and other people can view it horizontally. It is difficult to see from people. Therefore, the effect of privacy protection is improved. Also, a bright image can be observed when viewed from the front.
[0024]
Next, in order to examine how the distance: d and the focal length: f affect the brightness of the display image, the distance: d is fixed, the focal length: f is changed, and the dimensionless parameter is changed. : How the “brightness viewed from the front side of the display” changes with respect to d / f was examined by ray tracing simulation. The influence of the width and the arrangement pitch of the organic EL element was also examined.
[0025]
The “brightness viewed from the front side of the display” refers to the amount of light extracted within a viewing angle range of −30 degrees to +30 degrees when the total light emission amount of the organic EL display is 1. FIG. 3 shows the results. The horizontal axis in FIG. 3 is a parameter: d / f. The vertical axis “brightness” is the “brightness viewed from the front side of the display”. The “element width” is the width of the organic EL element.
[0026]
From FIG. 3, the following can be concluded.
The “brightness viewed from the front side of the display” becomes the brightest when the parameter: d / f = 0.3, and when d / f ≒ 0.3 (claim 2), from the front side of the display. The user can observe the “substantially brightest display image”. The simulation result of FIG. 2 (d / f = 0.28) is explained from this fact.
[0027]
When the parameter: d / f is in the range of 0.1 ≦ d / f ≦ 0.5 (claim 1), the display image viewed from the front side of the display is effectively bright (about 80% or more of the brightest case). Brightness).
[0028]
As the width of the organic EL element is smaller than the arrangement pitch P of the organic EL elements, the display image viewed from the front side of the display becomes brighter.
[0029]
Next, in order to know the optimum value of the distance: d with respect to the arrangement pitch: P of the organic EL elements, d / f = 0.3, and the arrangement pitch: P = 66 μm, 132 μm, 198 μm. The width of the EL element is changed to 30 μm, 40 μm, and 50 μm for an arrangement pitch of 66 μm, and is changed to 60 μm, 80 μm, and 100 μn for an arrangement pitch of 132 μm, and the arrangement pitch is 90 μm, 120 μm, and 150 μm for 198 μm. And the distance: d was changed, and the change in the “brightness viewed from the front side of the display” was examined by simulation.
[0030]
The results are shown in FIGS. In these figures, the horizontal axis is the distance: d (= 0.3f), and the vertical axis “brightness” is the “brightness viewed from the front side of the display”. 4A to 4C show a peak value of “brightness viewed from the front side of the display” and a distance d that gives 80% of the peak value.
[0031]
Based on the results of FIGS. 4A to 4C, the relationship between the array pitch: P and the distance: d is determined when the “brightness viewed from the front side of the display” becomes a peak and 80% of the peak value. FIG. 5 shows a plot of the time when.
[0032]
That is, the relationship between the arrangement pitch: P and the distance: d can be “substantially represented by a straight line”. In FIG. 5, a straight line {circle around (2)} gives a relationship between d and P when “brightness viewed from the front side of the display” reaches a peak.
d = αP-β
In this case, α = 0.83 and β = 26.27.
[0033]
In FIG. 5, a straight line {circle around (1)} gives a relationship between d and P when “brightness viewed from the front side of the display” reaches 80% of the peak value.
d = αP-β
In this case, α = 0.90 and β = 14.0. Similarly, the straight line (3) gives the relationship between d and P when the “brightness viewed from the front side of the display” reaches 80% of the peak value.
d = αP-β
In this case, α = 0.72 and β = 28.33.
[0034]
From this result, the following conclusions are drawn.
That is, for example, a distance: d corresponding to the pitch: P is obtained on the straight line {circle over (2)} in FIG. 5 based on the arrangement pitch: P of the organic EL elements. The focal length f of the microlens is determined so as to be 0.3.
[0035]
The position of the microlens array substrate and the array arrangement of the organic EL elements such that the microlens having the focal length: f = d / 0.3 thus obtained is located at a distance: d from the organic EL element. If the relationship is set, the "brightest display image" can be observed when viewed from the front of the display within the viewing angle range of -30 degrees to +30 degrees. That is, the improvement is more than twice as much as the case where the light is not condensed by the microlens.
[0036]
Further, based on the arrangement pitch: P, the value of d between the straight line {circle around (1)} and the straight line {circle around (3)} is determined. With respect to d determined in this way, d / f ≒ 0.3. The focal length of the microlens: f is determined.
[0037]
The position of the microlens array substrate and the array arrangement of the organic EL elements such that the microlens having the focal length: f = d / 0.3 thus obtained is located at a distance: d from the organic EL element. By setting the relationship, it is possible to observe an image having a brightness of 80% or more of the "brightest image" when viewed from the front of the display within a viewing angle range of -30 degrees to +30 degrees.
[0038]
In other words, when d / f ≒ 0.3, the arrangement pitch P of the organic EL elements and the distance d between the organic EL elements and the corresponding microlenses are d:
0.72 ≦ α ≦ 0.90, 14.0 ≦ β ≦ 28.33
For α and β in the range of
d ≒ αP-β
(Claim 3), an image having a brightness of 80% or more of the brightest image when viewed from the front side of the display within a viewing angle range of −30 degrees to +30 degrees. Observable.

Various modifications other than the example of FIG. 6 are possible depending on the combination of the refractive indexes of the respective layers.
In any of the above configurations, no adverse effect on the resolving power such as blurring of the displayed image due to the change of the optical path by the microlens was observed.
Note that a color image can be displayed by making three adjacent organic EL elements one unit and emitting these organic EL elements in red, green, and blue.

【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, a novel “organic EL display” can be realized. The organic EL display of the present invention can observe a bright display image from the front side, has a proper viewing angle of −30 to +30 degrees, and has a high “privacy protection effect” when used for personal information devices such as mobile phones. Further, since the display image observed from the front side is bright, power consumption can be reduced, and the life of the organic EL display can be extended.
