Description
【0001】

[0007]
The present invention has been made to solve the above problems, and has as its object to provide a lighting device and a projection display device capable of efficiently using light from a light source.
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, an illumination device according to the present invention includes a plurality of light sources and a lens array including a plurality of lenses corresponding to the respective light sources, and light from the respective light sources corresponds to the respective light sources. An illumination device that collects light by the lens and illuminates an irradiation surface, wherein an optical axis of the lens disposed outside the center of the lens array, and an optical axis of the light source corresponding to the lens, The lighting device is characterized by being arranged at a predetermined distance in a direction orthogonal to an optical axis of the lighting device. According to this configuration, the light emitted from the light source in the peripheral portion is also condensed by the corresponding lens and is emitted to the irradiation surface. Therefore, the light source light can be used efficiently.
[0009]
In addition, it has a plurality of light sources and a lens array having a plurality of lenses corresponding to the respective light sources, and illuminates an irradiation surface by condensing light from the respective light sources by the lenses corresponding to the respective light sources. An illumination device, wherein an optical axis of the light source corresponding to the lens is moved in a direction away from an optical axis of the illumination device with respect to an optical axis of the lens disposed at a position other than the center of the lens array. It is characterized by being arranged so as to be arranged.
[0010]
According to this configuration, since the overlap between the adjacent lenses does not increase, the effective diameter of each lens can be secured. Accordingly, each lens can swallow light emitted radially from each light source in a wide range, and can strongly illuminate the display area of the light modulation unit. Therefore, the light source light can be used efficiently.
[0011]
The light sources may be formed in an array. Even in this case, since the light sources in the peripheral portion are arranged outside the corresponding lens, the light sources are arranged at intervals from each other, so that the electrodes formed on the outer peripheral surface of each light source are short-circuited to each other. Each light source can be arranged without causing the light source to emit light.
[0012]
Further, the respective lenses constituting the lens array are arranged such that the respective light sources are moved toward the optical axis of the illumination device, and the respective light sources are densely arranged at a central portion of the light source array. Preferably, the lenses are arranged so that the optical axes of the lenses coincide with each other. According to this configuration, since the lens array can be formed as small as possible, the size of the entire lighting device can be reduced.
[0013]
In addition, it is preferable that the lenses constituting the lens array are arranged such that the distance between the optical axes of the lenses is 80% or more of the minimum diameter of each lens. According to this configuration, the overlap between adjacent lenses is reduced, so that the effective diameter of each lens can be secured. Thereby, each lens can swallow light emitted radially from each light source in a wide range, and the light source light can be used efficiently.
[0014]
Each light source and each lens are arranged such that a straight line connecting the center point of the light emitting region of each light source and the principal point of the lens corresponding to each light source intersects at one point behind the lens array. It is desirable to have been. According to this configuration, the light emitted from each light source can be collected by the lens corresponding to each light source to illuminate the irradiation surface. Therefore, the light source light can be used efficiently.
[0015]
On the other hand, a projection type display device according to the present invention includes the above-described lighting device. According to this configuration, it is possible to provide a projection display device capable of efficiently using light from the light source.
[0016]
In addition, the above-described lighting device in which each of the light sources is formed so as to be able to emit different color light, a light modulation unit that modulates the color light emitted from each of the light sources in the lighting device, and emits the color light from each of the light sources. Light emission control means for controlling the timing of the light emission and sequentially emitting color light from the light sources, and driving the light modulation means for driving the light modulation means in time sequence in accordance with the color light emitted from each light source Means for generating a synchronization signal for synchronizing the timing of emitting color light from each of the light sources and the timing of driving the light modulation means, and transmitting the generated synchronization signal to the light emission control means and the light modulation means driving means. And a synchronizing signal generating means for outputting.
[0017]
As described above, in the single-panel projection display device employing the color sequential driving method as the driving method of the light modulating means, it is not necessary to provide a color filter in the light modulating means to form pixels for each color. Can be used efficiently. Further, since the above-described lighting device is employed, the light modulating means can be efficiently illuminated by each color light emitted from each light source. Therefore, a bright and uniform color image can be formed.
[0018]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. In each drawing used in the following description, the scale of each member is appropriately changed in order to make each member a recognizable size.
[0019]
[Lighting device]
First, an embodiment of a lighting device according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 1 is a side sectional view of a lighting device and a light modulation unit according to the embodiment. The
[0020]
As the light source 12, a white light source such as a halogen lamp, a metal halide lamp, or a high-pressure mercury lamp may be used. In the present embodiment, a case in which a monochromatic light source such as a light emitting diode (hereinafter, referred to as an LED) element is used will be described. explain. In the case where an illumination device using a monochromatic light source is employed in a single-panel projector employing a color sequential driving method as a driving method of the light modulating means, it is not necessary to provide a color filter in the light modulating means. Therefore, the light source light can be used efficiently. In addition, by employing an LED as the monochromatic light source, it is possible to secure high luminance with low power consumption, and to realize efficient illumination. In addition, LEDs have excellent durability performance.
[0021]
LEDs are diodes that emit light when current flows through the junction. In an LED having a simple homojunction structure, p-type semiconductor and n-type semiconductor crystals are made of the same material. When a forward bias voltage is applied to an LED having a homojunction structure, electrons of the n-type semiconductor move to the p-type semiconductor, fall from a high-energy conduction band to a low-energy valence band, and recombine with holes. The energy lost at that time is emitted as light, and the LED emits light. Note that the color of emitted light depends on the energy difference (band gap) between the conduction band and the valence band, and the band gap is determined by the semiconductor material used. For example, red light is emitted when AlGaAs or the like is used, green light is emitted when GaP or the like is used, and blue light is emitted when InGaN or the like is used. Thus, the LED is a monochromatic light source.
[0022]
In addition, since the light emitting efficiency is low in the LED having the homo-junction structure, it is preferable to use the LED having the double hetero junction structure or the quantum well junction structure as the light source 12. An LED having a double hetero junction structure has an active layer with a small band gap sandwiched between a p-type semiconductor and an n-type semiconductor. When a forward bias voltage is applied to an LED having a double hetero junction structure, electrons and holes are confined in the active layer and the density increases. Thereby, recombination is performed efficiently and high luminous efficiency can be obtained. In addition, an LED having a quantum well junction structure has a plurality of semiconductor layers that are thin at about the wavelength of electrons (about 10 nm) between a p-type semiconductor and an n-type semiconductor. When a forward bias voltage is applied to an LED having a quantum well junction structure, only electrons and holes having a predetermined energy can be collected in the junction region. Thereby, recombination is performed efficiently and high luminous efficiency can be obtained. Further, light with a small wavelength width and close to a single color can be obtained. By employing an LED having a high luminous efficiency as a light source of a projection display device such as a projector, the brightness of an image can be improved and the power consumption can be reduced.
[0023]
The light source 12 includes a

In addition, a tapered surface that opens toward the front of the
[0025]
FIG. 2 shows a front view of the
[0026]
On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 1,
[0027]
It is preferable that each lens is constituted by an anamorphic lens. An anamorphic lens is a lens such as a cylindrical lens or a toroidal lens having different curvatures in the vertical and horizontal directions. The curvature of each direction of the anamorphic lens is determined according to the shape of the display area of the light modulation unit to be illuminated. This illuminates the entire display area of the light modulation means, so that light from the light source can be used efficiently.
[0028]
In the present embodiment, a case where an image of the
[0029]
In order to form an image of the light emitting area of each light source 12 in the display area of the light modulating means 50, it is necessary that each light source 12 and the light modulating means 50 have a conjugate relationship. Specifically, the ratio between the distance from each light source 12 to the front focal position of the corresponding lens 22 and the distance (focal distance) from the front focal position of the lens 22 to the principal point 23, and the ratio of the lens 22 The ratio between the distance (focal length) from the principal point 23 of the lens 22 to the rear focal position and the distance from the rear focal position of the lens 22 to the light modulating means 50 needs to match the magnification described above. Therefore, the focal length of each lens 22 is set so as to satisfy this relationship. Specifically, the focal length of each lens 22 is set so as to satisfy the above relationship by appropriately setting the curvature of each lens 22.
[0030]
As described above, each lens constituting the

[0033]
On the other hand, the
[0034]
As described in detail above, the lighting device according to the present embodiment is configured such that the optical axis of the light source arranged at the peripheral portion of the light source Moved and placed. According to this configuration, the light emitted from the light source in the peripheral portion is also condensed by the corresponding lens, and is applied to the display area of the light modulation unit. Further, since the overlap between adjacent lenses does not increase as in the case where the optical axis of the lens is moved inward with respect to the optical axis of the light source, the effective diameter of each lens can be ensured. Accordingly, each lens can swallow light emitted radially from each light source in a wide range, and can strongly illuminate the display area of the light modulation unit. Therefore, the light source light can be used efficiently. Further, since the adjacent light sources are arranged at intervals, each light source can be arranged without short-circuiting the electrodes formed on the outer peripheral surface of each light source.
[0035]
In the present embodiment, an example has been described in which the light source array is configured by a plurality of monochromatic light sources having different emission colors. However, the present invention can be widely applied to a case where a plurality of light sources are provided, regardless of the emission colors of the light sources.
[0036]
Further, in the present embodiment, a case has been described in which each light source and the light modulating unit have a conjugate relationship, and an image of the light emitting region of each light source is created in the display region of the light modulating unit. However, it is not always necessary that each light source and the light modulating means have a conjugate relationship. This is because, if an image of the light emitting area of each light source is created in the display area of the light modulating means, light uniformity in the display area of the light modulating means may not be ensured. In this case, the image of the light emitting area of each light source is slightly blurred in the display area of the light modulating means. Specifically, the ratio between the distance (focal length) from the principal point of the lens to the rear focal position of the lens and the distance from the rear focal position of the lens to the light modulating means does not match the magnification of the image. As described above, the light modulating units are slightly shifted. Thereby, uniformity of light in the display area of the light modulation means can be secured.
[0037]
Further, in the present embodiment, an example has been described in which the irradiation surface illuminated by the illumination device is a light modulation unit such as a liquid crystal light valve. However, the present invention is not limited to the case where the light modulating means is used as the irradiation surface, and it is also possible to use a rod lens, another lens array, or the like as the irradiation surface. When illuminating the rod lens, it is preferable that each light source and the rod lens have a conjugate relationship because the rod lens itself ensures uniformity of light. Thus, the rod lens can be strongly illuminated, and the light from the light source can be used efficiently.
[0038]
[Single-plate projector]
Next, a projection display device including the illumination device according to the present embodiment will be described. First, a single-panel projector will be described with reference to FIGS. FIG. 3 is an explanatory diagram of a single-plate projector, and FIG. 4 is a timing chart. A single-panel projector is a projector that modulates light from a light source using a single light modulator. Hereinafter, a single-panel projector that employs a color sequential driving method as a driving method of the light modulation unit will be described.

Furthermore, since the illumination device according to the embodiment is employed, the entire display area of the light modulation unit can be efficiently illuminated with each color light emitted from each light source. Therefore, a bright and uniform color image can be formed. Further, since it is not necessary to provide a cross dichroic prism or a dichroic mirror for guiding each color light to the light modulating means, the cost of the projection display device can be reduced.
