本発明は、プロジェクタに関し、特に、DMD(Digital Mirror Device)を用いたDLP(Digital Light Processing:DLPはテキサスインスツルメンツ社の登録商標)方式のプロジェクタにおける照明光学系に関する。

【従来の技術】
DLP方式のプロジェクタは、複数の半導体ミラー素子をアレイ状に配列させたDMDに光を照射し、その反射光をレンズ等で拡大投影して画像表示を行うものである。図8に示すように、放電ランプ100からの白色光が回転楕円面鏡102によって反射され、その反射光がR、G、Bのカラーフィルターを配列した円盤状のカラーホイール104に入射される。カラーホイール104は一定速度で回転され、入射された光は、赤色(R)、緑色(G)、青色(B)の波長帯を有する光に順次変換される。R、G、B光は、インテグレータまたはライトトンネル106において均一な光強度の光線束となって出射され、この光線束は、コンデンサレンズ108、平面ミラー110および球面ミラー112、コンデンサレンズ114を介してDMD116に入射される。DMD116は、画像データに基づき、RGB光(カラーホイールの回転)に同期して時分割駆動され、それらの反射光が投影レンズ118を介してスクリーンに照射され、カラー映像が表示される。

光源として用いられる放電ランプ100は、明るい投射映像を形成するために、光出力が大きいものが用いられるが、その使用時間が長くなると、電極が消耗し、アークフリッカやアークジャンプによりチラツキが生じたり、あるいは放電ランプのガラス管が電極等から発生した金属粉によって黒色化し光の明るさが低下してしまう。さらに、ランプの発熱により、プロジェクタ内の温度が非常に高くなるため、それを冷却するために比較的大きな冷却能力を有するファンを取り付けなければならない。

こうした観点から、プロジェクタの光源として、放電ランプに代わるものが求められている。その一つに、近年著しい開発が遂げられている半導体レーザダイオード(LED)がある。半導体レーザダイオードは、発振する波長に応じた光を出力するが、現在では既に、短波長の青色から長波長の赤色までの光を発光することができる半導体レーザダイオードが実用化されている。

例えば特許文献1は、車両用灯具に関するものであるが、複数のLEDを光源に利用している。具体的には、複数のLEDの前方にフレネルレンズ、拡散レンズ、集光レンズを設けることで、光源全体を広い発光面積でほぼ均一に光って見えるようにするものである。また、特許文献2は、画像読取装置に関し、R、G、B、IRの各LEDをマトリクス状に配置して光源を構成している。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、上記特許文献1および2は、LEDを光源として用いるものではあるが、これらは、カラー映像を投射するプロジェクタ用の光源としては十分な検討をされていない。プロジェクタ用の光源にLEDを用いる場合、チラツキの少ない、均一な照度の光学照明系明を要求されるが、上記特許文献1および特許文献2に示される構成では、このような要求を満足させることは困難であり、プロジェクタの光源に適用することはできない。

そこで本発明は、従来の課題を解決し、半導体レーザ素子を光源に用いた照明光学系およびそれを利用したプロジェクタを提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
本発明に係る照明光学系は、少なくとも第1の波長を発光する第1の半導体レーザ素子、第2の波長を発光する第2の半導体レーザ素子、第3の波長を発光する第3の半導体レーザ素子が複数2次元アレイ状に配列された半導体レーザアレイ基板と、前記半導体レーザアレイ基板の前方に配置されたフライアイレンズと、前記フライアイレンズの前方に配置されたコンデンサレンズとを有する。これにより、ムラの少ない、均一な照明光を得ることができる。さらに、従来の放電ランプと比べて光利用効率を向上させ、かつ光源の発熱温度を低下させることが可能となる。

【発明の実施の形態】
次に、本発明の実施の形態について図面を参照して説明する。図1は、本発明の実施の形態に係るDLP方式プロジェクタの主要な構成を示すブロック図である。プロジェクタ1は、画像信号Vを入力し、これをDMDと同じ画素数のRGBデジタル画像データに変換する前処理部10と、前処理部10からのデジタル画像データに基づきDMD50の駆動および光源駆動回路30の駆動を制御する制御部20と、クロック信号CLKを生成するクロック発生回路40と、複数の半導体ミラー素子をアレイ状に配置させそれらの半導体ミラー素子の角度を可変させるDMD50と、赤色(R)、緑色(G)、青色(B)の半導体レーザダイオード素子(LED)をマトリックスアレイ状に配置したLED光源60と、LED光源60からの光をDMD50へ照射させる照明光学系70と、DMD50によって反射された光をスクリーン上へ投射する投射光学系80とを含む。

図2に光源駆動回路の内部構成を示す。光源駆動回路30は、各色のLEDを駆動させるタイミング信号を形成するタイミング回路32と、タイミング回路32からのタイミング信号によってLEDを駆動する駆動回路34と、LEDを好ましい状態で発光させるための電力を供給する電極供給回路36とを有する。

図3に、LED光源60の詳細を示す。LED光源60は、レーザアレイ基板68上に、赤色(R)LED62、緑色(G)LED64、青色(B)LED66を2次元アレイ状に配列している。アレイの各行(X1、X2、X3・・・Xn−2、Xn−1、Xn)は、赤色LED62、緑色LED64、青色LED66を複数含み、これらを一列に配列している。各行のLED62、64、66は、その列方向において、一つ置きに配列パターンがずれている。つまり、奇数行(X1、X3・・・Xn−1)と偶数行(X2・・・Xn−2、Xn)とで、LED62、64、66の位置がずれ、例えば、Xn−1のLED62に着目したとき、それと隣接する行Xn−2、XnのLED62は、そこから1.5ピッチ(各LEDの配列ピッチを1ピッチとしたとき)分だけ行方向にずれており、Xn−1のLED62はその周囲を緑色LED64と青色LED66によって囲まれている。別な言い方をすれば、アレイは、図7(a)に示すようなLED62、64、66を一組とする配列パターンを複数組有している。

各LED62、64、66は、2次元アレイ化が容易な面発光型半導体レーザを用いることができる。各LEDのn側電極は、レーザアレイ基板68のGND配線(図中省略)に共通に接続される。各赤色LED62のp側電極は、アレイ基板68の接続端子68Rに接続され、各緑色LED64のp側電極は、接続端子68Gに接続され、各青色LED66のp側電極は、接続端子68Bに接続される。

タイミング回路32は、制御部20からのイネーブル信号EBと、クロック発生回路40からのクロック信号CLKを入力する。図4にタイミング回路の動作を示す。タイミング回路32は、イネーブル信号EBを受け取ると、クロック信号CLKに同期したタイミングパルス信号φR、φB、φGを生成する。タイミングパルス信号φRのパルスは、クロック信号CLKの立ち上がりに同期して立ち上がり、次のクロック信号の立ち上がりのときに立ち下がる。つまり、クロック信号CLKの1周期に等しいパルス幅を有する。タイミングパルス信号φGは、φRの立下りに同期しφRのパルス幅と等しいパルス幅を生成する。タイミングパルス信号φBは、タイミングパルス信号φGの立ち下がりに同期しφRのパルス幅と等しいパルス幅を生成する。このように、各タイミングパルス信号φR、φG、φBのパルスは、それぞれ重複することなく異なるタイミングで交互に生成される。これにより各LED62、64、66は、タイミングパルス信号φR、φG、φBと同期したタイミングで点灯される。さらに、タイミング回路32は、タイミングパルス信号と同期した同期信号Sを制御部20へ出力する。

タイミングパルス信号φR、φG、φBは、上記以外に、例えばクロック信号CLKを1/nに分周する分周回路を用いたり、あるいは、図4(b)に示すように、タイミングパルス信号φRを遅延素子31へ入力させ、遅延素子38からパルス幅に等しい時間を遅延させたタイミングパルス信号φGを生成し、タイミングパルス信号φGを遅延素子39へ入力させそこからタイミングパルス信号φBを生成することもできる。さらに、上記例では、各タイミングパルス信号φR、φG、φBのパルス幅をすべて等しくしたが、これに限らず、パルス幅を変えて、各LED62、64、66が点灯する時間を変えてもよい。例えば、カラー映像の演色性が不足している場合には、タイミングパルス信号φRのパルス幅を長くし、赤色LED62の点灯時間を他のLEDよりも長くするようにしてもよい。

制御部20は、デジタル画像データを、DMD50を駆動するためのフォーマットに変換する。変換されたフォーマットデータは、タイミング回路32からの同期信号Sに同期して、すなわち、赤色LED62、緑色LED64、青色LED66の駆動に同期して、DMD50に出力される。DMD50は、フォーマットデータに基づき、各半導体ミラー素子の傾斜角を可変させる。

図5に、プロジェクタの光学系を示す。従来の図6と同一構成のものについては同一参照番号を付してある。図5において、LED光源60の前方に、フライアイレンズ120、その前方にコンデンサレンズ122が配置される。フライアイレンズ120の各焦点位置にLED62、64、66がそれぞれ配置される。LED62、64、または66から発せられた赤色、緑色、または青色の光は、フライアイレンズ120によって集光され、そこを透過した光は平行光線になる。コンデンサレンズ122は好ましくは平凸レンズであり、入射された平行光線はそこを透過することでインテグレータまたはライトトンネル106に入射される。このようなフライアイレンズ120を用いたリレーレンズ系により、LED光源60からの焦光点に光量ムラあるいは輝度ムラの少ない照明を行うことができる。なお、フライアイレンズ120とコンデンサレンズ122との間に、さらに別のフライアイレンズを挿入するようにしてもよい。

LED光源60から順次発せられたR、G、B光は、フライアイレンズ120、コンデンサレンズ122を介して、インテグレータ106に入射される。インテグレータ106は、4:3あるいは16:9のアスペクト比を有し、この比に応じた均一な光線束が出射される。この光線束は、コンデンサレンズ系108、平面ミラー110、球面ミラー112、コンデンサレンズ114を通り、DMD50を照明し、そこで反射された光が投射レンズ118を介してスクリーン上に投射され、カラー映像が表示される。

本実施の形態では、赤色LED62、緑色LED64、青色LED66が、タイミング回路32によって、図4(a)に示すような異なるタイミングで発光されるため、従来技術で必要とされていたカラーホイールを不要となる。従来のカラーホイールは、R(赤)、G(緑)、B(青)のカラーフィルターを含み、そこに白色光を透過させることで、R、G、Bの光を得ていたため、実質的に1/3の光が利用されずに捨てられていた。このため、光源の光利用効率が悪く、その結果として、明るい投射映像をえるためには、光出力の大きな光源を必要としていた。これに対して、LED光源を用い、赤、緑、青のLEDを交互に駆動させるため、カラーホイールは不要であり、かつ、光源の光利用効率が格別向上される。

また、図5に示すように、LED光源60に近接して冷却ファン130を設けても良い。LEDの動作特性は温度依存性があり、温度が上昇すると発光光量が減少するため、冷却ファン130によりLED光源60が一定の温度を超えないようにする。

次に、本発明の第2の実施の形態について説明する。図6に第2の実施の形態に係る照明光学系の構成を示す。本実施の形態では、より均一でムラの少ない照明を得るために、LED光源60とフライアイレンズ122とをその間隔を保持させた状態で相対的に移動させる。ここでは、LED光源60を固定し、フライアイレンズ122を水平方向Hに一定周期および一定の距離で振動させる。フライアイレンズ122の移動は、圧電素子の歪みを利用して駆動軸を往復動させたり、カム機構を利用して駆動軸を往復動させることができる。フライアイレンズ122の水平方向の移動は、好ましくは、図6に示すように(フライアイレンズの平面図)、フライアイレンズ122の対角線方向(H1またはH2)であり、その移動距離は、おおむね、各LEDが配列されるピッチに等しい。これにより、LED光源60の赤、緑または青の光が一定位置から規則的にずれるため、ムラの少ないより均一な照射面をもつ照明光を得ることができる。

次に本発明の第3の実施の形態を図7に示す。図7(a)は、第1の実施の形態における一組のLED62、64、66の配列パターンを示し、図7(b)は、第3の実施の形態における一組のLED62、64、66の配列パターンを示す。第3の実施の形態に係る配列パターンは、4つのLEDを一組とし、一対の赤色LED62が対角線上に配置され、それと直交する対角線上に緑色LED64と青色LED66が配置される。このような配列パターンを複数組アレイ状に配列させることで、赤色の光量を他の色の光量よりも多くすることができ、カラー映像の演色性を高めることができる。勿論、これ以外の配列パターンにより赤色LEDの光量を増加させるようにすることも可能である、あるいは、他のLEDの数を増やしてその光の光量を増加させるようにしてもよい。

以上本発明の好ましい実施形態の一例について詳述したが、本発明は係る特定の実施形態に限定されるものではなく、特許請求の範囲に記載された本発明の要旨の範囲内において、種々の変形・変更が可能である。例えば、上記実施の形態では、DLP方式のプロジェクタを例示したが、これ以外にも、光変調素子に液晶装置を使用した液晶タイプのプロジェクタにも適用することができる。さらに、アレイの各行に配列されるLEDの順序(62、64、66)は、これ以外であってもよい。

【発明の効果】
本発明によれば、少なくとも第1の波長を発光する第1の半導体レーザ素子、第2の波長を発光する第2の半導体レーザ素子、第3の波長を発光する第3の半導体レーザ素子が複数2次元アレイ状に配列された半導体レーザアレイ基板と、フライアイレンズと、フライアイレンズの前方に配置されたコンデンサレンズとにより照明光学系を構成することで、ムラの少ない、より均一な照明光を得ることができる。さらに、照明光学系をプロジェクタに適用することで、従来の放電ランプと比べて光利用効率を向上させ、かつ光源の発熱温度を低下させることが可能となる。
