Abstract
Description
【0001】

Unlike the NW mode, the NB mode is a mode in which the retardation of the liquid crystal cell is in the λ / 4 condition, and optical compensation is performed using a λ / 2 phase difference plate.
The NB mode reflection type liquid crystal display device is described in
[0013]
Next, optical modulation in the NB mode liquid crystal display device will be described using a Poincare sphere.
The Poincare sphere is a sphere located on a sphere having a diameter of 1 (assuming that there is no light absorption) when Stokes parameters representing the polarization state of light are arranged in a three-dimensional space. The Stokes parameters and the Poincare sphere are also described in detail in
In the case of a reflective liquid crystal display device, in order to obtain a good black display, the point projected onto the S1-S2 plane on the reflective plate, that is, the circularly polarized light, that is, the Poincare sphere, is exactly at the center (S1 = S2 = 0). ).
[0014]
In the case of the above-mentioned general NB mode reflective liquid crystal display device, as shown in the S1-S2 plane projection view of FIG. 27A and the S2-S3 plane projection view of FIG. The natural light that has passed through the plate is converted into linearly polarized light, and the polarization modulation operation (EF (λ / 2)) that varies depending on the wavelength of the light is performed by the λ / 2 retardation plate, for example, the three primary colors of light, red (R) and green. In the case of light of 450 nm, 550 nm, and 650 nm, which are the main wavelengths of (G) and blue (B), the phase modulation increases in the order of 650 nm <550 nm <450 nm.
Due to this optical modulation (optical compensation), when the liquid crystal cell performs phase modulation to circularly polarized light, large phase modulation is applied in the order of 650 nm <550 nm <450 nm similarly to the phase difference plate. The action (EF (λ / 2)) and the action (EF (LC)) of the liquid crystal cell are offset each other, and the entire light in the visible light region can be converted into substantially circularly polarized light.
In the example shown here, the alignment mode of the liquid crystal cell is 0 ° twist, ie, homogeneous alignment, but the same applies to twist alignment.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, when the above-described NB mode is combined with a resistive touch panel, as in the case of the NW mode, even if the positional relationship between the touch panel, the polarizing plate, and the phase difference plate is simply changed, the phase difference plate used is Since it is a λ / 2 plate, the interface reflection of the touch panel by the circularly polarizing plate cannot be absorbed as in the NW mode, so that improvement in visibility cannot be expected.
[0017]
The present invention has been made in view of the above situation, and an object of the present invention is to reduce interface reflection at an input unit such as a resistive touch panel in a normally black mode suitable for thinning a liquid crystal display device. An object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal display device capable of suppressing the display and improving the display visibility.
[0018]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, a liquid crystal display device of the present invention is filled with a nematic liquid crystal having a twist angle, has at least a light reflection portion, and a liquid crystal panel used in a normally black mode. A flat input unit provided on the display surface side for detecting a position on the display of the liquid crystal panel; and a position to which an output from the input unit is input and fed back to the display of the liquid crystal panel as necessary. A detection unit, a first phase difference plate provided on a surface of the input unit opposite to the liquid crystal panel, and configured to suppress transmission of reflected light at the input unit from light incident from outside, and the first phase difference A polarizing plate provided on a plate, and a second retardation plate provided between the input unit and the liquid crystal panel, and a combination of the first retardation plate and the second retardation plate. The liquid crystal panel For optical compensation.
[0019]
In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, in a normally black mode liquid crystal display device having an input unit such as a touch panel, a first retardation plate is provided on a surface of the input unit opposite to the liquid crystal panel; A second retardation plate is provided between the liquid crystal panel and the liquid crystal panel.
Here, the first retardation plate suppresses transmission of the reflected light at the input portion of the external light. Further, optical compensation of the liquid crystal panel is performed by a combination of the first retardation plate and the second retardation plate.

The measurement for evaluation was carried out by an optical system in which parallel light was incident from the 9 o'clock direction of 30 ° of the liquid crystal display device and light was received from the normal direction to the display surface of the liquid crystal display device.
[0036]
Further, as a conventional example, the same measurement was performed on a liquid crystal display device having a configuration shown in the schematic diagram of FIG. The dotted line B in the liquid crystal display device according to the first embodiment shown is the result of the conventional liquid crystal display device shown in FIG.
As described above, the contrast is about 6.4 when the conventional touch panel is arranged outside the liquid crystal display device, whereas the liquid crystal display device having the optical configuration according to the first embodiment is used. A preferable range for a parameter such as a twist angle of a liquid crystal cell in the liquid crystal display device according to each of the above embodiments was determined by optical simulation.
The optical calculation was performed using the Jones Matrix method (for details, refer to “Crystal Optics” Applied Physics Society of Japan, edited by Optical Society), and the optical path path in the normal direction of the liquid crystal cell was calculated.
Further, assuming that the polarizing plate is an ideal one and that a transmittance of up to 50% can be obtained in the entire visible light region, it is assumed that there is no light absorption except for the polarizing plate. The deformation of liquid crystal molecules when a voltage was applied was calculated by the elastic body theory.
[0049]
FIG. 13 is a flowchart of the optical simulation.
When the simulation is started, first, as a first step ST11, the twist angle of the liquid crystal cell, the retardation of the liquid crystal cell, the polarization axis angle of the polarizing plate, the slow axis angle of the first retardation plate, the retardation of the first retardation plate, The slow axis angle of the second phase difference plate and the retardation of the second phase difference plate are set.
Next, as a second step ST12, optical characteristics such as reflectance and chromaticity when no voltage is applied (black display) are calculated.
Next, as a third step ST13, the black level (black reflectance, blackness) when no voltage is applied is determined.
Next, as a fourth step ST14, optical characteristics such as reflectance and chromaticity when a voltage is applied (white display) are calculated.
Next, as a fifth step ST15, the white level (white reflectance, whiteness) at the time of voltage application is determined.
Next, as a sixth step ST16, only a result that satisfies the cell condition and characteristics is output.
Further, if necessary, the process returns to the first step ST11, where the conditions are changed and the calculation is subsequently repeated. If it is determined in the third step ST13 and the fifth step ST15 that a predetermined result cannot be obtained, the further calculation is stopped and the process returns to the first step ST11.
[0050]
The configuration of the liquid crystal display device to be simulated according to the present embodiment is as shown in FIG.
That is, the
Polarization axis AX of polarizing
[0051]
The initial value setting, determination, and the like in the first step ST11, the third step ST13, and the fifth step ST15 are performed in accordance with the conditions C11, C13, and C15 shown in FIG.
In the first step ST11, the twist angle Φ is 0 to 80 °, the retardation Δnd (10) of the liquid crystal cell is 140 to 250 nm, the polarization axis angle β of the polarizing plate is 0 to 90 °, and the retardation of the first retardation plate is The axis angle γ1 is β + 45 ° or 135 °, the retardation Δnd (30a) of the first retardation plate is 120 to 170 nm, the slow axis angle γ2 of the second retardation plate is 0 to 180 °, and the retardation of the second retardation plate Δnd (30b) was 100 to 250 nm.
In the third step ST13, a range satisfying the black reflectance ≤ 1% and the chromaticity distance ≤ 0.08 was determined.
In the fifth step ST15, a range satisfying the white reflectance ≤ 48% and the chromaticity distance ≤ 0.05 was determined. The light source irradiated from the outside is D65A standard light source was assumed.
[0052]
Here, the reflectivity in the optical characteristics refers to a so-called light use efficiency calculated by calculating how much light is reflected and returned with respect to the
[0053]
FIG. 15 is a graph in which the maximum contrast CR value at each twist angle is plotted against the twist angle Φ of the liquid crystal cell. When the twist angle is 0 ° and when the twist angle is 80 °, nothing satisfies the conditions of the simulation, which means that good optical characteristics can be obtained only when the twist angle is in the range of 10 to 70 °. .
From FIG. 15, as the twist angle of the liquid crystal cell increases, the contrast in the reflection mode increases, and the contrast near the range of 40 to 60 ° becomes the highest. It can be said that this region is appropriate in this mode.
[0054]
The reason why favorable characteristics cannot be obtained when the twist angle is 0 ° is considered as follows.
In the liquid crystal display device of the present embodiment, the light that has been converted to circularly polarized light by the first retardation plate is returned to linearly polarized light again by the second retardation plate, and needs to be converted to circularly polarized light again by the liquid crystal cell. .
In this case, the circularly polarized light converted by the liquid crystal cell needs to efficiently convert the light in the visible light range into a circularly polarized light. When the twist angle is around 0 °, the combination that is most efficiently converted into the circularly polarized light is as follows. It has been found that the slow axis azimuths of the first and second retardation plates are orthogonal to each other, and there is only a configuration that cancels out the phase difference generated in each retardation plate.
However, in this configuration, it is impossible to make the entire visible light region circularly polarized due to the wavelength dispersion of light, so that a good black state (black reflectance and coloring) cannot be obtained and the simulation conditions are satisfied. Probably not.
[0055]
In the range where the torsion angle exceeds 70 °, even if the combination of the first and second retardation plates is devised, the black reflectance increases because the condition for circular polarization does not exist. It is probable that the conditions were not satisfied.
[0056]
This will be described using a Poincare sphere. FIG. 16A is an S1-S2 plane projection view of a region where the twist angle exceeds 70 °, and FIG. 16B is an S1-S2 plane projection view of a region where the twist angle is within 70 °.
As described above, when the combination of the first and second retardation plates is appropriately arranged when the twist angle is within 70 °, light in the visible light region can be efficiently converted into circularly polarized light. Since any combination of retardation plates does not pass through the orbit passing through the circularly polarized light region, only elliptically polarized light can be obtained, and the black reflectance cannot be sufficiently reduced, and no contrast can be obtained. Thus, it can be explained that the simulation conditions could not be satisfied.
[0057]
Next, the relationship between the cell parameters and the display contrast constituting the liquid crystal display device in each of the above embodiments was obtained by the above simulation.
The results are shown in FIGS. 17 (a) to 17 (e).
17A to 17E, the vertical axis represents the contrast CR, and the horizontal axis represents the retardation Δnd (10) of the liquid crystal cell, and FIG. 17B represents the polarization of the polarizing plate. 17 (c) is the retardation Δnd (30a) of the first phase difference plate, FIG. 17 (d) is the retardation Δnd (30b) of the second phase difference plate, and FIG. 17 (e) is the second phase difference This is the slow axis angle γ2 of the plate.
In the above simulation, the polarization axis angle of the polarizing plate and the retardation of the first retardation plate include the entire range assumed in the simulation, and the parameters cannot be limited. However, the retardation of the liquid crystal cell is 150 to 250 nm and the second is It was found that the retardation of the retardation plate was preferably 100 to 230 nm, and the slow axis angle of the second retardation plate was preferably 90 to 150 °.
However, if the configuration of the liquid crystal display device and the simulation conditions are changed, the above preferable range naturally changes, and the present invention is not limited to the above range.
[0058]
(Example 5)
In the reflection / transmission type liquid crystal display device according to the embodiment shown in FIG. 7, a preferable range with respect to the retardation of the liquid crystal cell and the polarization axis angle of the backlight-side polarizing plate was obtained by optical simulation.
[0059]
FIG. 18 is a flowchart of the optical simulation.
When the simulation is started, first, as a first step ST21, the retardation of the liquid crystal cell and the polarization axis angle of the backlight-side polarizing plate are respectively set.
Here, regarding the polarization axis angle of the polarizing plate, the slow axis angle of the first phase difference plate, the retardation of the first phase difference plate, the slow axis angle of the second phase difference plate, and the retardation of the second phase difference plate, An optimum value at each torsion angle of the liquid crystal cell obtained by the analysis of the reflection mode in the fourth embodiment is input.
Next, as a second step ST22, optical characteristics such as transmittance and chromaticity when no voltage is applied (black display) are calculated.
Next, as a third step ST23, the black level (black transmittance, blackness) when no voltage is applied is determined.
Next, as a fourth step ST24, optical characteristics such as transmittance and chromaticity when a voltage is applied (white display) are calculated.
Next, as a fifth step ST25, a white level (white transmittance, whiteness) at the time of voltage application is determined.
Next, as a sixth step ST26, only a result that satisfies the cell condition and characteristics is output.
Further, if necessary, the process returns to the first step ST21, where the conditions are changed and the calculation is subsequently repeated. If it is determined in the third step ST23 and the fifth step ST25 that a predetermined result cannot be obtained, the further calculation is stopped and the process returns to the first step ST21.
[0060]
The configuration of the liquid crystal display device to be simulated in the present embodiment is as shown in FIG.
That is, from the observer Obs side, the
Polarization axis AX of backlight side polarizing plate32Is set as a reference azimuth and an angle α with respect to the azimuth.
[0061]
The initial value setting and determination in the first step ST21, the third step ST23, and the fifth step ST25 are performed in accordance with the conditions C21, C23, and C25 shown in FIG. 18, respectively.
In the first step ST21, the retardation Δnd (10) of the liquid crystal cell was 180 to 400 nm, and the polarization axis angle α of the backlight-side polarizing plate was 0 to 180 °.
In the third step ST23, a range satisfying the black transmittance ≦ 2% and the chromaticity distance ≦ 0.08 was determined.
In the fifth step ST25, a range satisfying the white transmittance ≦ 40% and the chromaticity distance ≦ 0.05 was determined. As a backlight source, D65A standard light source was assumed.
[0062]
Note that the retardation of the liquid crystal cell in the transmission region is as shown in FIG.
FIG. 20 shows the results regarding the polarization axis azimuth of the backlight-side polarizing plate.
In FIG. 20, the vertical axis is the contrast CR, and the horizontal axis is the polarization axis angle α of the backlight-side polarizing plate.
From this figure, it was found that the polarizing axis azimuth of the backlight side polarizing plate is preferably in the range of 20 to 100 °.
However, if the configuration of the liquid crystal display device and the simulation conditions are changed, the above preferable range naturally changes, and the present invention is not limited to the above range.
[0063]
(Example 6)
In the reflection / transmission type liquid crystal display device according to the embodiment shown in FIG. 8, the retardation of the liquid crystal cell, the slow axis angle of the third retardation plate, the retardation of the third retardation plate, the polarization of the backlight side polarizing plate. The preferred range for the axis angle was determined by optical simulation.
[0064]
FIG. 21 is a flowchart of the optical simulation.
When the simulation is started, first, as a first step ST31, the retardation of the liquid crystal cell, the slow axis angle of the third retardation plate, the retardation of the third retardation plate, and the polarization axis angle of the backlight-side polarizing plate are respectively set. .
Next, as a second step ST32, optical characteristics such as transmittance and chromaticity when no voltage is applied (black display) are calculated.
Next, as a third step ST33, the black level (black transmittance, blackness) when no voltage is applied is determined.
Next, as a fourth step ST34, optical characteristics such as transmittance and chromaticity when a voltage is applied (white display) are calculated.

Further, if necessary, the process returns to the first step ST31, where the conditions are changed and the calculation is subsequently repeated. If it is determined that the predetermined result cannot be obtained in the third step ST33 and the fifth step ST35, the further calculation is stopped and the process returns to the first step ST31.
[0065]
The configuration of the liquid crystal display device to be simulated in the present embodiment is as shown in FIG.
That is, from the observer Obs side, the
Slow axis AX of
[0066]
The initial value setting, determination, and the like in the first step ST31, the third step ST33, and the fifth step ST35 are performed according to the conditions C31, C33, and C35 shown in FIG. 21, respectively.
In the first step ST31, the retardation Δnd (10) of the liquid crystal cell is 180 to 400 nm, the slow axis angle of the third retardation plate is 0 to 180 °, the retardation of the third retardation plate is 200 to 320 nm, and the backlight is The polarization axis angle α of the side polarizing plate was 0 to 180 °.
In the third step ST33, a range satisfying the black transmittance ≦ 0.5% and the chromaticity distance ≦ 0.08 was determined.
In the fifth step ST35, a range satisfying the white transmittance ≦ 40% and the chromaticity distance ≦ 0.05 was determined. As a backlight source, D65A standard light source was assumed.
[0067]
Note that the retardation of the liquid crystal cell in the transmission region is as shown in FIG.
The results of the above simulation are shown in FIGS. 23 (a) to 23 (c).
23A to 23C, the vertical axis represents the contrast CR, the horizontal axis represents the polarization axis angle α of the backlight-side polarizing plate, and FIG. The retardation Δnd (30c) of the phase difference plate, and FIG. 23C shows the slow axis angle γ3 of the third phase difference plate.
From this figure, it is preferable that the polarization axis angle of the backlight side polarizing plate is −20 to 130 °, the retardation of the third retardation plate is 180 to 330 nm, and the slow axis angle of the third retardation plate is 40 to 180 °. It turned out to be.
However, if the configuration of the liquid crystal display device and the simulation conditions are changed, the above preferable range naturally changes, and the present invention is not limited to the above range.
[0068]
As described above, when the resistive touch panel is provided in the twisted nematic alignment NB mode liquid crystal display device, the visibility is significantly reduced due to the interface reflection, but according to the liquid crystal display device according to the above embodiment, Also, in the NB mode, it is possible to provide a reflection-type or reflection / transmission-type liquid crystal display device which can suppress interface reflection of a resistive touch panel and does not impair display visibility.
[0069]
In addition, a method of suppressing the interface reflection of the resistive touch panel as described above and ensuring display visibility has been proposed in the NW mode. However, the NW mode requires at least four retardation plates and requires a liquid crystal. There is a disadvantage that the thickness of the display device increases. On the other hand, since the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention employs the NB mode, the number of retardation plates required for display can be reduced to at least two, and the liquid crystal display device can be made thinner.
Further, when the elements constituting the touch panel are constituted by the first and second retardation plates of the present invention, the thickness can be further reduced.
[0070]
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention is not limited to the above embodiment.
For example, in the case of a liquid crystal panel having a twist angle of a nematic liquid crystal, an angle between a slow axis or a fast axis of a first retardation plate and an absorption axis or a polarization axis of a polarizing plate, or a transmission part and a reflection part. The preferred range is described for the ratio dT / dR of the cell thickness dT in the transmissive portion of the liquid crystal cell to the cell thickness dR in the reflective portion, but the present invention is not limited to this, and the first retardation plate may be used for a touch panel or the like. The above parameters can be appropriately changed as long as the configuration is such that the transmission of the reflected light from the input section is suppressed and the optical compensation of the liquid crystal panel is performed by the first phase difference plate and the second phase difference plate.
In addition, various changes can be made without departing from the gist of the present invention.
[0071]
【The invention's effect】
ADVANTAGE OF THE INVENTION According to the liquid crystal display device of this invention, in normally black mode suitable for thinning a liquid crystal display device, it is possible to suppress interface reflection at an input unit such as a resistive touch panel and improve display visibility. it can.
