Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a contrast correction circuit, and more particularly to a contrast correction circuit suitable for use in a display device having a narrow dynamic range such as a PDP (Plasma Display Panel).
[0002]
[Prior art]
In a display device with a narrow dynamic range such as a PDP, a contrast correction circuit for enhancing the contrast of a portion having a large amount of information in the image is often used in order to obtain a better image in view.
In such a conventional contrast correction circuit, a plurality of types of lookup tables having different contrast conversion characteristics are generally used for contrast conversion for enhancing the contrast of an image, and these tables are stored in a memory such as a ROM. Have been. For the selection of the look-up table, a result obtained by integrating image data for one screen, a result obtained by taking a histogram, and the like are used.
For example, as shown in

Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2002-244615
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in the above-mentioned conventional example, if the values of the integrated values of the gradients are substantially the same, the same correction curve is selected regardless of the magnitude of the contrast ratio, and proper contrast correction is not performed. There are drawbacks.
For example, as shown in FIG. 4, when the luminance gradation is present uniformly from a low value (black level) to a high value (white peak) over the entire screen (the number of pixels of each luminance gradation is almost equal) (FIG. 4). (A)), when the luminance gradation is concentrated on the intermediate value between the low value (black level) and the high value (white peak) in the entire screen (the number of pixels of the central luminance gradation is large) ( FIG. 4B).
Here, in FIG. 4, the horizontal axis indicates the luminance gradation, the vertical axis indicates the cumulative number of each luminance gradation (the integrated number), and the broken line indicates the center of the cumulative number, that is, the pixel in the frame. The figure shows half the number.
[0005]
At this time, in the conventional example, the same correction curve is selected because the integrated values are the same in spite of the completely different screen characteristics from the viewpoint of contrast, and the same correction is performed.
The present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and performs appropriate contrast correction in a range from a low gradation value (black level) to a high gradation value (white peak) according to the distribution of the gradation. It is an object to provide a contrast correction circuit.

A correction curve generation unit that uses a curve obtained from a histogram of integrated values in each block as a correction curve; and a gradation correction unit that corrects the gradation of an input image signal using the correction curve. And
[0007]
The contrast correction circuit of the present invention has a predetermined upper and lower limit value range for limiting the shape of the correction curve, and has a correction curve limiter for correcting the shape of the correction curve based on the limit value range. It is characterized by the following.
In the contrast correction circuit according to the present invention, the correction curve generating unit stores the data of the correction curve in a storage unit to form a gradation correction table, and the gradation correction unit performs the gradation correction based on the inputted gradation. The contrast correction method according to the present invention includes a luminance signal generation process of generating a luminance signal from an image signal, and dividing a luminance gradation into predetermined ranges, determining a luminance gradation for each input pixel, and A histogram generation process of counting the number of pixels for each corresponding block as the number of block pixels, and sequentially calculating the number of block pixels from the block having the lower gradient, and obtaining the number of pixels from the histogram of the integrated value in each block. A correction curve generating step of storing the obtained curve as a correction curve in the storage unit, and a gradation correction step of correcting the gradation of the image signal input to the gradation correction unit in accordance with the correction curve of the storage unit. It is characterized by.

As shown in FIG. 3, the correction
In FIG. 3, the horizontal axis represents the number of a block into which the gradation of the input image signal (RGB signal) is classified, and the vertical axis represents a correction coefficient described later.
Here, the luminance
That is, if the gradation of each of the RGB signals is 256, the luminance gradation of the luminance gradation is also 256.
In the limit value range, when a correction curve having an extremely large slope is generated, the gradation is corrected more than necessary, the difference in the gradation between adjacent blocks becomes large, and the contrast is too strong. It is provided in order to prevent an image from being visually recognized by a human eye.
[0019]
Here, the data of the curves A and B indicating the limit value range are stored in the storage unit provided in the correction
In addition, the data of the curves A and B are used for each model of the PDP to be used, by a plurality of people, while actually looking at the display screen, making variable adjustments to obtain values in a state where the image is not blurred and the contrast is clear. It is determined by the test to be detected.

In the PDP panel, the light emitting elements corresponding to each of the R signal, the G signal, and the B signal in the one pixel for obtaining the luminance gradation are set to the respective levels of the corrected R signal, G signal, and B signal. It is driven by the furniture.
[0021]
Here, as the correction coefficient, the number of pixels in one frame is set to N, the number of gradations is divided into

Then, the corrected gradient corresponding to each block is
As required.
The gradation based on the difference between the blocks is obtained by the first term, the gradation based on the count value accumulated by the counter until immediately before is obtained by the second term, and these are summed to correct the inputted gradation. The gradient is used.
Here, d is the input image signal (gradation of each of the RGB signals), and dm represents the maximum gradation of the RGB signal in the image signal.
[0022]
For example, the number of pixels in one frame is 852 × 480 (408960), the gradation of each of RGB is 256 gradations of 0 to 255, and the 256 gradations are divided into blocks of 32 gradations (block 1). ~ 8)

And the corrected gradient corresponding to each block is

As described above, the contrast correction circuit of the present invention includes a circuit array (
Here, as another configuration, the contrast correction circuit according to the present invention includes a storage unit that stores correction coefficients corresponding to each of RGB in the
[0025]
As described above, the contrast correction circuit of the present invention arbitrarily selects the immediately preceding frame or the frame before the immediately preceding frame, and obtains a correction curve used for the subsequent frames from the gradient of the pixel of the selected frame. Since a correction coefficient for a block having a large amount (the number of counted pixels), that is, a block having a high count value can be set to be larger than other correction coefficients, the amount of change in gradient corresponding to a block having a large amount of information is large. However, it is possible to reduce the amount of change in the gradient corresponding to a block having a small amount of information, and it is possible to effectively obtain an image having a clear contrast difference.
[0026]
Further, the contrast correction circuit of the present invention does not use a predetermined correction curve, but arbitrarily selects the immediately preceding frame or a frame before the immediately preceding frame, and obtains a correction curve from the gradient of pixels of the selected frame. Therefore, since a correction curve corresponding to the number of pixels for each gradation at that time can be obtained, the gradation can be corrected according to the image to be displayed, and the contrast can be appropriately corrected for each gradation. .
[0027]
Further, in the contrast correction circuit of the present invention, the correction

In addition, according to the contrast correction circuit of the present invention, when the correction curve generated by the correction
[0029]
Also, a program for realizing the contrast correction circuit in FIG. 1 is recorded on a computer-readable recording medium, and the program recorded on the recording medium is read into a computer system and executed to perform contrast correction. Is also good.
Here, the “computer system” includes an OS and hardware such as peripheral devices. The “computer-readable recording medium” refers to a general medium such as a flexible disk, a magneto-optical disk, a ROM, a CD-ROM, and a storage device such as a hard disk built in a computer system.
[0030]
Further, a “computer-readable recording medium” refers to a communication line for transmitting a program via a network such as the Internet or a communication line such as a telephone line, which dynamically holds the program for a short time. In this case, it is also assumed that a program that holds a program for a certain period of time, such as a volatile memory in a computer system serving as a server or a client in that case, is included. Further, the above-mentioned program may be for realizing a part of the above-mentioned functions, or may be for realizing the above-mentioned functions in combination with a program already recorded in a computer system.
[0031]
As described above, the embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail with reference to the drawings. However, the specific configuration is not limited to the embodiments, and includes a design and the like without departing from the gist of the present invention.
[0032]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the contrast correction circuit of the present invention, the immediately preceding frame or the frame before the immediately preceding frame is arbitrarily selected, and the correction curve used for the subsequent frames is obtained from the gradient of the pixel of the selected frame. Therefore, the correction coefficient for a block with a large amount of information (the number of counted pixels), that is, a block with a high count value can be set to be larger than other correction coefficients. It is possible to increase the amount and reduce the amount of change in the gradient corresponding to a block with a small amount of information, and an image with a clear contrast difference can be obtained effectively.
