Abstract
Description
【0001】

以下、完全なFOVをフルFOV(full FOV)ともいう。
【0058】
以下、減縮されたFOVをリデュースドFOV(reduced FOV)ともいう。
【0062】
【0089】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an RF coil (radio frequency coil) and a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus, and more particularly to an RF coil for performing parallel imaging and a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus including such an RF coil.
[0002]
[Prior art]
As one method of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging), there is parallel imaging. In parallel imaging, magnetic resonance signals are acquired simultaneously and in parallel through a plurality of receiving systems. The acquisition of the magnetic resonance signal is performed by, for example, reducing the field of view (FOV) by half. By reducing the FOV by half, the signal collection speed is doubled.
[0003]
An image is reconstructed based on the signals collected in that manner. Image reconstruction is performed in two stages. In the first stage, an intermediate image is generated based on signals collected by a plurality of receiving systems. For image generation, a two-dimensional inverse Fourier transform is used. The generated image has a reduced FOV. Since the FOV has been reduced, the image includes an aliasing image that has been turned back from outside the FOV.
[0004]
In the second stage, the aliasing image is returned to the original position by performing a predetermined operation on such an image, and a complete FOV image is generated. The following equation is used for the calculation (for example, see Non-Patent Document 1).

[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In order to image the abdomen by parallel imaging, when an RF coil composed of two unit coils arranged along the body width direction in a range corresponding to the body width of the object is used, each unit coil becomes a loop. Since the area is large, the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of magnetic resonance signal reception is low, and the quality of imaging is reduced.
[0009]
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to realize an RF coil for parallel imaging having a good SNR for receiving a magnetic resonance signal, and a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus including such an RF coil.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
(1) An invention according to one aspect for solving the above-described problem is an RF coil used in proximity to an imaging target to perform magnetic resonance imaging, and corresponds to a body width of the target. An RF coil comprising: n (n is an integer greater than 2) unit coils that are not coupled to each other and are arranged in a range along a body width direction.
[0011]
(2) According to another aspect of the invention for solving the above-described problem, a magnetic resonance imaging method for performing parallel imaging based on a magnetic resonance signal collected by applying a static magnetic field, a gradient magnetic field, and an RF magnetic field to an object to be imaged is provided. An apparatus, comprising: an RF coil for receiving the magnetic resonance signal, wherein the RF coil is not coupled to each other arranged along a body width direction in a range corresponding to the body width of the object. A magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprising n (n is an integer greater than 2) unit coils.
[0012]
In the invention according to each of the above aspects, the RF coil is constituted by n (n is an integer greater than 2) unit coils that are not coupled to each other and are arranged along the body width direction in a range corresponding to the target body width. Therefore, the loop area of the unit coil is smaller than when n is 2, and the SNR of signal reception is improved.
[0013]
It is preferable that two sets of the n unit coils are provided so as to face each other in the body thickness direction of the object in terms of imaging a deep part of the body. It is preferable that at least one of the n unit coils located at one end in the body width direction is curved toward the target side, in order to further improve the SNR by reducing the g factor. Of the n unit coils, those positioned at both ends in the body width direction are preferably bent in the direction of wrapping the object, in that the SNR is further improved by further reducing the g factor.
[0014]
It is preferable that the n unit coils cancel each other by partially overlapping adjacent coils because a special neutralizing circuit is not required. It is preferable to cancel the coupling of the n unit coils by a neutralization circuit in that the spatial arrangement of the unit coils is not limited.
[0015]
It is preferable that the n unit coils have a common ground because signal stability is good. It is preferable that the value of n is 4 in terms of a good trade-off between SNR improvement and number increase.
[0016]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. Note that the present invention is not limited to the embodiment. FIG. 1 shows a block diagram of the magnetic resonance imaging apparatus. This device is an example of an embodiment of the present invention. An example of an embodiment relating to the device of the present invention is shown by the configuration of the present device.
[0017]
As shown in the figure, the present apparatus has a magnet system 100. The magnet system 100 has a main magnetic field coil unit 102, a gradient coil unit 106, and an RF coil unit 108. Each of these coil portions has a substantially cylindrical shape and is arranged coaxially with each other. A subject 1 to be photographed is mounted on a cradle 500 and carried into and out of a generally cylindrical internal space (bore) of the magnet system 100 by a transport means (not shown).
[0018]

[0019]
The main magnetic field coil unit 102 forms a static magnetic field in the internal space of the magnet system 100. The direction of the static magnetic field is substantially parallel to the direction of the body axis of the
[0020]
The gradient coil unit 106 generates three gradient magnetic fields for giving a gradient to the static magnetic field strength in three directions perpendicular to each other, that is, in a slice axis, a phase axis, and a frequency axis.
[0021]
When coordinate axes perpendicular to each other in the static magnetic field space are x, y, and z, any of the axes can be a slice axis. In that case, one of the remaining two axes is a phase axis, and the other is a frequency axis. Further, the slice axis, the phase axis, and the frequency axis can have an arbitrary inclination with respect to the x, y, and z axes while maintaining the perpendicularity among them. In this apparatus, the direction of the body width of the
[0022]
The gradient magnetic field in the slice axis direction is also called a slice gradient magnetic field. The gradient magnetic field in the phase axis direction is also referred to as a phase encode gradient magnetic field or a phase encode gradient magnetic field. The gradient magnetic field in the frequency axis direction is also referred to as a read out gradient magnetic field. The readout gradient magnetic field is synonymous with the frequency encoding gradient magnetic field. In order to enable generation of such a gradient magnetic field, the gradient coil section 106 has three gradient coils (not shown). Hereinafter, the gradient magnetic field is also simply referred to as a gradient.
[0023]
The RF coil unit 108 forms a high-frequency magnetic field for exciting a spin in the body of the subject 1 in the static magnetic field space. Hereinafter, forming a high-frequency magnetic field is also referred to as transmitting an RF excitation signal. The RF excitation signal is also called an RF pulse.
[0024]
An electromagnetic wave generated by the excited spin, that is, a magnetic resonance signal, is received by the receiving
[0025]
The magnetic resonance signal is a signal in a frequency domain (a Fourier space). Since the magnetic resonance signal is encoded in two axes by the gradients in the phase axis direction and the frequency axis direction, the magnetic resonance signal is obtained as a signal in a two-dimensional Fourier space. The phase encode gradient and the readout gradient determine the sampling position of the signal in two-dimensional Fourier space. Hereinafter, the two-dimensional Fourier space is also referred to as a k-space.

FIG. 3 shows an example of the configuration of coils that are not mutually coupled. As shown in the figure, in the front coils 12 to 42, the four coils are arranged such that the loop surfaces thereof partially overlap each other. The same applies to the rear coils 52 to 82. Each coil is schematically represented as a rectangular loop.

Each coil has a size in the x direction of, for example, 180 mm and a size in the z direction of, for example, 500 mm. The length in the x direction when four such coils are arranged is, for example, 600 mm.
[0045]
By arranging in this manner, the coupling through the overlapping portion and the coupling through the non-overlapping portion have opposite polarities. Therefore, by appropriately selecting the overlapping amount, adjacent coils do not substantially couple with each other. It will be. In this way, decoupling can be performed without using a special circuit. It should be noted that the objects facing each other with the

The

Signal extraction from each coil is performed, for example, as shown in FIG. This makes it possible to perform electrically stable signal extraction.
[0050]
FIG. 7 shows an example of a pulse sequence for photographing. This pulse sequence is a pulse sequence based on EPI (echo planar imaging). The pulse sequence proceeds from left to right. The same applies hereinafter.
[0051]
In the figure, (1) shows a sequence of an RF signal. (2) to (4) are all gradient magnetic field sequences, (2) is a slice gradient, (3) is a frequency encoding gradient, and (4) is a phase encoding gradient. The static magnetic field is constantly applied at a constant magnetic field strength.
[0052]
First, spin excitation by a 90 ° pulse is performed. After a predetermined time of the 90 ° excitation, 180 ° excitation with a 180 ° pulse is performed. All are selective excitations under the slice gradient Gslice.
[0053]
Next, the phase encode gradient Gphase and the frequency encode gradient Gfreq are applied in a predetermined sequence, and a plurality of echoes are sequentially read. A plurality of echoes have different phase encodings. The echo is represented by the center signal. The same applies hereinafter.
[0054]
Such a pulse sequence is repeated a predetermined number of times with a repetition time TR, and a plurality of echoes are read out each time. That is, a multi-shot scan is performed. The phase encoding of the echo is changed at each repetition, and an echo for one screen is obtained by repetition a predetermined number of times.
[0055]
By reading out echoes by phase encoding and frequency encoding, k-space data is sampled. FIG. 8 shows a conceptual diagram of the k-space. As shown in the figure, the horizontal axis kx of the k space is the frequency axis, and the vertical axis ky is the phase axis.
[0056]
In the figure, a plurality of horizontally long rectangles each represent a data sampling position on the phase axis. The number entered in the rectangle indicates the amount of phase encoding. The phase encoding amount is normalized by π / N. N is the number of samplings in the phase direction.
[0057]
The amount of phase encoding is 0 at the center of the phase axis ky. The amount of phase encoding gradually increases from the center to both ends. The polarities of the increase are opposite to each other. The sampling interval, that is, the difference between the phase encoding amounts is π / N. A tomographic image is reconstructed by performing a two-dimensional inverse Fourier transform on such k-space data. The reconstructed image is an image for a complete FOV. Hereinafter, a complete FOV is also referred to as a full FOV.
[0058]
In parallel imaging, the sampling interval of k-space is increased to reduce the number of times of sampling in order to speed up imaging. That is, for example, as shown by oblique lines in FIG. 9, the sampling in the direction of the phase axis ky is alternately performed, and the number of samplings is reduced to 2. As a result, the photographing time is reduced by half and the photographing speed is increased.
[0059]
With every other sampling, the sampling interval is doubled. By doubling the sampling interval, the FOV of the reconstructed image is reduced to half of the full FOV.
[0060]
The doubling of the sampling interval in the phase encoding direction is performed by setting the difference in the amount of phase encoding to 2π / N. As a result, the FOV is reduced to half in the phase encoding direction.
[0061]
Generally, when the sampling interval, that is, the difference in the amount of phase encoding is increased by R times, the FOV is reduced to 1 / R. R is also called a reduction factor. In FIG. 9, R = 2. Hereinafter, the reduced FOV is also referred to as a reduced FOV (reduced FOV).
[0062]
Assuming that the number of receiving systems is n, it is preferable that the reduction factor R satisfies the following relationship in order to appropriately obtain a full FOV output image described later.
[0063]
(Equation 2)
[0064]
here,
R: reduction factor n: number of receiving systems The operation of this apparatus by parallel imaging will be described. FIG. 10 shows a flow chart of the operation of the present apparatus. As shown in the figure, in step (step) 701, the reception sensitivity distribution is measured. Thereby, the spatial distribution of the sensitivities of the plurality of receiving systems is measured.
[0065]
The spatial distribution of the sensitivity of the receiving system is obtained as a sensitivity map (map) image. The sensitivity map image is obtained, for example, from an image obtained by scanning the same slice of the

[0076]
The pulse sequence for parallel imaging is not limited to EPI, but may be any other appropriate pulse sequence. As parallel imaging other than EPI, for example, there is imaging by a 3D gradient echo (3D Gradient Echo) method.
[0077]
FIG. 11 shows the pulse sequence. In both figures, (1) shows a pulse sequence of the RF signal. (2) to (4) show pulse sequences of gradient magnetic fields. (2) is the slice gradient and the phase encoding gradient in the slice direction, (3) is the frequency encoding gradient, and (4) is the phase encoding gradient. The static magnetic field is constantly applied at a constant magnetic field strength.
[0078]
First, spin excitation by an α ° pulse is performed. α ° excitation is selective excitation under a slice gradient Gslice. After the α ° excitation, the phase encoding gradient Gslice, the frequency encoding gradient Gfreq, and the phase encoding gradient Gphase in the slice direction are applied in a predetermined sequence, and the echo is read.
[0079]
Such a pulse sequence is repeated a predetermined number of times with a repetition time TR, and each time an echo is read. The phase encoding of the echo is changed at each repetition, and an echo for one screen is obtained by a predetermined number of repetitions.
[0080]
By reading out echoes by bidirectional phase encoding and frequency encoding, three-dimensional k-space data is sampled. By increasing the sampling interval, data collection is performed on a three-dimensional reduced FOV.
[0081]
By performing a three-dimensional inverse Fourier transform on this data, a 3D image is reconstructed. The 3D image is an intermediate image for the reduced FOV. From this intermediate image, a full FOV output image is generated using the sensitivity matrix S. However, a sensitivity matrix corresponding to 3D is used.

[0084]
It should be noted that the SNR can be improved by setting the number of coils arranged in the body width direction to 3, and by setting the number of coils to 4 or more, the SNR can be further improved. It is preferable to set the number of coils to be four, since a trade-off between an improvement in performance by improving the SNR and an increase in cost due to an increase in the number (trade-off) is appropriate.
[0085]
Also, by arranging a plurality of coils along the body width direction, parallel imaging with the phase encoding direction as the body width direction becomes possible, which is convenient when a coronal image is taken. .
[0086]
The following relationship exists between the SNR and the reduction factor.
[0087]
(Equation 5)
[0088]
here,
SNR0: SNR when the reduction factor is 1
R: reduction factor g: g-factor
Since the value of SNR0 increases due to the decrease in the loop area of the coil, the value of SNR given by the above equation increases. That is, there is a margin for increasing the reduction factor R due to the increase in SNR0, so that it is possible to further increase the reduction factor R to further increase the speed of photographing.
[0089]
Since the SNR is given by the above equation, it is possible to further increase the SNR by reducing the value of the g factor. The reduction of the g factor is performed by, for example, bending the coils at both ends in the body width direction in a direction surrounding the

As described above, the present invention has been described based on the example of the preferred embodiment. However, those having ordinary knowledge in the technical field to which the present invention pertains may limit the technical scope of the present invention to the example of the above embodiment. Various changes and substitutions can be made without departing from the invention.
