発生する差周波光の周波数は1010〜1013Hz(0.01THz〜10THz)とすることができる。
(Sakoda Optical Properties of Photonic Crystals (Springer Series in Optical Sciences, 80 p111)
【0012】
【0013】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a wavelength conversion device and a wavelength conversion method for converting a wavelength of incident laser light into a desired wavelength. This wavelength conversion device aims to provide a light source in a new wavelength region, which has been difficult so far, by generating light having a wavelength longer than the incident wavelength, and particularly for medical applications, fluoroscopy technology, image imaging, and the like. It is useful for the development of the field.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Until now, various coherent light sources have been studied, developed and marketed with the advent of lasers, but they are effective in generating light or electromagnetic waves (hereinafter referred to as THz light) in the frequency range (frequency) of 10 10 to 10 13 Hz. At present, there is almost no coherent light source. This THz (terahertz) light may be called a submillimeter wave or a far infrared ray. Conventionally, as a light source for generating THz light, there has been known a method in which a free electron laser is used to cause laser oscillation by meandering an electron beam in a periodic magnetic field, but this method uses a very large free electron laser. Must be used, which is not practical.

[Patent Document 1]
JP, 2002-229086 A This device is provided with a periodic structure in which two or more kinds of light media form a periodic structure, and a periodic structure modulating means for modulating the periodic structure. Includes a medium having a second-order or third-order nonlinear optical effect in order to cause parametric conversion or four-wave mixing in the periodic structure, and the periodic structure modulating means includes a signal light and an idler in the parametric conversion. It changes the wavelength of light or the wavelength of emitted light in four-wave mixing. With this configuration, in the periodic structure, the optical parametric effect or four-wave mixing occurs under different optical constant conditions corresponding to the same excitation laser light, and the periodic structure modulating means changes the wavelength to a desired wavelength. It does not use a so-called difference frequency.

[0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a small, simple, and highly efficient wavelength converter that generates light in a long wavelength band such as THz light or electromagnetic waves, which does not require a complicated optical system.
[0007]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
An object of the present invention is to provide a photonic crystal including a non-linear optical medium, wherein the photonic crystal is irradiated with two laser lights or three or more laser lights having different frequencies to generate a difference frequency light. This is achieved by the wavelength converter described above. Here, the present invention will be described in several cases.
The first method is a method of efficiently extracting the difference frequency by disposing an optical resonator that resonates with the difference frequency light in the photonic crystal. Since the difference frequency light is in a standing wave state by the resonator, the extraction efficiency is increased.
A second method is to efficiently generate difference frequency light by arranging a second photonic crystal that resonates with the difference frequency light in the photonic crystal (first photonic crystal). It is of a configuration that causes Here, to resonate with the difference frequency means that a propagation mode of the difference frequency light exists in the second photonic crystal. Usually, the first photonic crystal is arranged so as to surround the second photonic crystal, or the first photonic crystal is arranged so as to be sandwiched from both sides by the second photonic crystal.
Further, as a third method, the structure is the same as that of the above-described second structure, but by appropriately determining the lattice constants of the first and second photonic crystals, that is, the period, the first photonic crystal can be obtained. Function as defects of the second photonic crystal. The energy level of the defect is in the band gap of the second photonic crystal, and the frequency of the difference frequency light corresponds to the energy level of the defect. Since the defect mode has a very high density of states, parametric oscillation can be efficiently generated.

Further, the wavelength conversion method according to the present invention is characterized in that a photonic crystal composed of a non-linear optical medium is irradiated with two laser lights or three or more laser lights having different frequencies to generate a difference frequency light. Is what you do. Here, two adjacent laser beams have adjacent frequencies. The frequency of the generated difference frequency light can be 10 10 to 10 13 Hz (0.01 THz to 10 THz). Here, that the frequencies of the two lasers are close to each other (adjacent to each other) means that the energy difference is equal to the energy of the desired THz light. Such an adjacent laser beam can be generated by simultaneously oscillating two wavelengths using a distributed feedback laser (DFB) that does not cause a λ / 4 phase shift.
By appropriately selecting the laser cavity length, a plurality of longitudinal modes can be oscillated, and a desired THz light can be generated by utilizing the fact that the energy between the longitudinal modes is constant.
With such a configuration, it is possible to generate light or electromagnetic waves in a long wavelength band such as THz light with a small size, simply, and with high efficiency, which does not require a complicated optical system.
[0009]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described, but before that, the principle of the present invention will be described.
In the present invention, difference frequency light is generated using a photonic crystal having a nonlinear optical effect and laser light having two or more wavelengths. A photonic crystal is an artificial optical element that is configured by alternately and periodically arranging two kinds of substances having different refractive indexes in the order of wavelength, thereby changing a dispersion relation with respect to light. It is known that a photonic crystal has a photonic band similar to the band structure of electrons in a solid and takes an electromagnetic field state similar to a Bloch function characterizing an electronic state in a periodic crystal structure. In addition, by utilizing the band gap of light, which is a characteristic of photonic crystals, light is confined to a small area to realize low-threshold laser oscillation. Research on changing the direction of travel is ongoing.
[0010]
On the other hand, another characteristic of the photonic crystal is that a nonlinear optical phenomenon is remarkably exhibited. Since the periodic change in the refractive index is artificially controlled in the photonic crystal, it is possible to arbitrarily change the light band structure realized by the period of the photonic crystal and the difference in the refractive index. As described above, the frequency (frequency) and the wave vector of the light propagating in the photonic crystal are determined by the band structure of the photonic crystal. That is, the photonic band determines the dispersion relation of light, that is, the property of the light wave propagating in the photonic crystal. FIG. 7 shows an example of a band diagram of a photonic crystal in the visible light region and near infrared light. Photonic band shown here is an example of one-dimensional photonic crystals is realized by a dielectric multilayer film by laminating a film thickness of
[0011]
Next, consider creating a photonic crystal with a material having a nonlinear optical coefficient. Hereinafter, such a photonic crystal is referred to as a non-linear photonic crystal. First, the second harmonic generation will be briefly described to explain the nonlinear phenomenon. Now, when the incident light having the frequency (frequency) ω propagates in the nonlinear photonic crystal, it has a propagation vector k (ω) determined by the band structure. At this time, in order to efficiently generate the second harmonic 2ω in the photonic crystal, not only the oscillation of the second harmonic is induced by electrons through the nonlinear optical coefficient, but also the phase matching condition of the following equation is satisfied. It is known that it is necessary to meet. (Sakoda Optical Properties of Photonic Crystals (Springer Series in Optical Sciences, 80 p111)
[0012]
(Equation 1)
[0013]
Here, k (2ω) is the wave number of the second harmonic in the photonic crystal, G is the reciprocal lattice vector of the photonic crystal, and m is an integer.
Since the light in the photonic crystal has a higher refractive index than vacuum, the group velocity propagating through the photonic crystal is small. Therefore, the electric field in the photonic crystal is compressed, and the electric field intensity per unit length becomes very high. Since the electric field strength is increased in this way, it is considered that a nonlinear optical effect such as generation of a second harmonic (SHG) becomes prominent. Further, when k (ω) is considered as the starting state, it is considered that the higher the density of states in k (2ω), which is the final state, the more efficiently the light conversion process of the above equation occurs.
[0014]
The present invention is intended to efficiently generate light corresponding to the energy difference between two or more types of incident light, that is, difference frequency light, by using the remarkable nonlinear optical effect of the photonic crystal described in detail above. . This enables generation of light (or electromagnetic wave) that is smaller in energy than the incident light.
[0015]
Further, the present invention will be described in detail. Here consider the case where two light proximate angular frequency of omega 1 and omega 2 of the frequency (frequency) as the incident light is incident on the photonic crystal. The process of satisfying ω 1 −ω 2 = Δω and decomposing light is called an optical parametric process.
The present invention includes a first photonic crystal that receives the light of the incident light ω 1 and ω 2 to generate the difference frequency light, and in this case, the difference frequency light Δω = ω 1 − disposing a second photonic crystal that resonates with respect to omega 2, or it is preferable that the outside of the first photonic crystal is disposed an optical resonator. Although it is possible to generate the difference frequency Δω by only the first photonic crystal, preferably, the first photonic crystal that can generate the difference frequency (electromagnetic wave) Δω by the incident lights ω 1 and ω 2 is used. It is composed of a crystal and a resonator that resonates with the difference frequency (electromagnetic wave) Δω, or is composed of a long-period second photonic crystal that gives a high state density to the difference frequency Δω. The lights of ω 1 and ω 2 interact with each other through the nonlinear optical coefficient of the material constituting the first photonic crystal, and as a result, the electronic vibration of Δω = ω 1 −ω 2 which is the difference frequency is generated by the photo. It is induced in the nonlinear medium constituting the nick crystal. In order to effectively extract the induced light (or electromagnetic wave), a resonator or a second photonic crystal is used.
[0016]
5A and 5B are diagrams for explaining the optical parametric process and the phase matching condition. FIG. 5A shows the case where G = 0, and FIG. 5B shows the case where G = 1. Now, let the wave vectors of the incident light in the photonic crystal be k (ω 1 ) and k (ω 2 ). Assuming that the wave number of the light of Δω generated at this time is k (Δω), the following equation is used as the phase matching condition.
(Equation 2)
[0018]
Is satisfied, the light generation efficiency of Δω is the highest. Therefore, the photonic crystal itself may be designed to satisfy the phase matching condition for the difference frequency.
Also, at this time, from the viewpoint of the law of conservation of energy and quantum mechanical state transition, if ω 1 > ω 2 , the initial state is k (ω 1 ), and the final state is k (ω 2 ) and k (Δω). You can think that there is. Therefore, the following equation:
[Equation 3]
[0020]
In order to efficiently generate the difference frequency, it is necessary that the group velocity in the initial state k (ω 1 ) is small and the state density of the final states k (ω 2 ) and k (Δω) is high. You can see that there is. Here, G represents a reciprocal lattice vector, and m represents an integer. In the following, for simplicity of description, it is assumed that m = 0.
[0021]
When ω 1 and ω 2 are close to each other, k (ω 1 ) −k (ω 2 ), that is, k (Δω) becomes small, and therefore can be ignored in the short-period first photonic crystal. For example, if the incident light ω 1 is 2 × 10 14 Hz (1.5 μm) and ω 2 is 1.99 × 10 14 Hz, light having a difference frequency of 1 THz (1 × 10 12 Hz) is observed. At this time, k (Δω) / k (ω 1 ) = 5 × 10 −3 , and the difference between the k vectors is small and can be ignored.
[0022]
Thus, when the energy of the incident light is close and the wavelength of the difference frequency light is larger than the size of the first photonic crystal, it can be considered that the phase matching condition is almost satisfied. At this time, by using a long-period second photonic crystal and providing a structure that resonates or resonates with Δω light, difference frequency light can be effectively extracted.
[0023]
That is, a second photonic crystal is provided around the first photonic crystal so as to sandwich the first photonic crystal, and the difference frequency Δω resonates with the second photonic crystal having a long period structure. By increasing the state density of the wave number k 2 (Δω) in the second photonic crystal, the generation efficiency of Δω can be increased. By designing the second photonic crystal in this way, the transition probability of optical parametric oscillation increases. The second photonic crystal need not necessarily be a nonlinear medium. FIG. 6 shows an example of a band diagram of a photonic crystal in a terahertz region. This photonic band is an example of a one-dimensional photonic crystal, and is obtained when the thickness of SiO 2 (α) is 0.3 mm and the thickness of LiNbO 3 is 0.01 mm, and the layers are alternately stacked. is there.
[0024]
Further, the difference frequency Δω generated in the nonlinear photonic crystal can be efficiently extracted even if an optical resonator that resonates with the wavelength is arranged around the first photonic crystal. At this time, a mirror (reflection mirror) is arranged so that the length of the optical resonator is a half integral multiple or an integral multiple of the wavelength of the difference frequency light. Mirrors are provided on both sides of the first photonic crystal. One mirror reflects 100% of the difference frequency light with respect to the difference frequency light, and the other mirror sets the reflectance to a lower value to extract the difference frequency light. To be able to
[0025]
Further, it is possible to design the first photonic crystal as a defect of the second photonic crystal having a long period. Since the first photonic crystal is inserted into the long-period second photonic crystal, the first photonic crystal functions as a defect when viewed from the second photonic crystal. Since the energy of the difference frequency is low and has a long wavelength, the wavelength of the difference frequency light Δω is longer than the thickness of the first photonic crystal, and the first photonic crystal is a uniform medium for the difference frequency light Δω. Can be considered to be.
[0026]
In such a case, it can be designed so that the energy of the difference frequency Δω is located within the band gap of the second photonic crystal. The density of states in the defect mode is high. By doing so, the difference frequency light Δω is confined in the first photonic crystal, and a high Q value can be obtained. That is, the electric field strength in the defect increases.
Therefore, it goes without saying that the intensities of the laser beams ω 1 and ω 2 are high, and the electric field intensity of the difference frequency also increases.
(Equation 4)
[0028]
Optical parametric oscillation effectively occurs. Therefore, it is possible to effectively extract the difference frequency light Δω.
[0029]
In the above description, the case where the difference frequency light is output using two types of laser light has been mainly described. On the other hand, even when three or more laser beams having different wavelengths close to each other are used, the wavelength conversion can be performed by outputting the difference frequency light. When three or more laser beams are used, the difference in frequency is the same between the longitudinal modes as described above, so that difference frequency light can be effectively extracted. That is, the frequency of light between adjacent longitudinal modes is Δω = ω i − ω i-1 (I represents a mode), and is constant regardless of the mode. Therefore, if the desired THz light frequency is Δω, three or more adjacent longitudinal mode frequencies can all contribute to the generation of the desired THz.

[0036]
The probability that the elementary process occurs increases. The difference frequency light is captured by these impurity levels, and a high electric field intensity is obtained.
