Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a polarization maintaining fiber, and more particularly to a method for manufacturing a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber.
[0002]
[Prior art]
A polarization maintaining fiber, which is one type of optical fiber, is a fiber whose polarization stability is improved by intentionally increasing the propagation constant difference between the X-axis direction and the Y-axis direction of the fiber cross section. It is used for optical fiber sensors and coherent optical fiber communication using the same.
[0003]
In this polarization maintaining fiber, the side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber has the advantage that the manufacturing process is simpler and can be manufactured relatively inexpensively, as compared with the stress applying fiber such as PANDA fiber which is currently mainstream. have.
[0004]
Incidentally, there is a mode birefringence as an index indicating the polarization maintaining characteristic of the polarization maintaining fiber. It can be said that the larger the value of the mode birefringence is, the more excellent the polarization maintaining property is. Further, crosstalk indicating the amount of light leaking in the X-axis direction of the fiber cross section in the Y-axis direction is also an index of the polarization maintaining characteristic. It can be said that the smaller the value of the crosstalk (the larger the absolute value), the better the polarization maintaining characteristic.
[0005]
In general, the mode birefringence of a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber is 1 × 10 -5 About 1/10 of the mode birefringence of the PANDA fiber. However, in the use of a short length of about several meters, such as a pigtail or a rare earth amplification fiber, a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber is preferably used because crosstalk is small.
[0006]
The side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber is manufactured by drawing a preform as disclosed in
[0007]
Further, as another method for manufacturing a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber, as disclosed in

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
The present invention has been made in view of the above, and an object of the present invention is to provide a method of manufacturing a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber having a small transmission loss.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The manufacturing method of the side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber of the present invention includes a core, and a clad provided so as to cover the core, and is disposed on the clad so as to sandwich the core in a fiber cross section. A method for manufacturing a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber, wherein a pair of holes is formed so as to extend along the core, wherein the core forming portion serving as the core is formed so as to extend in the rod axial direction, and the rod is formed. A step of preparing a rod material formed so that a pair of hole forming holes which become the pair of holes arranged so as to sandwich the core forming portion in a cross section extends along the core forming portion; Producing a rod preform having a smooth surface in the hole forming hole by heating and stretching the material; and forming the hole in the surface of the rod preform in the hole forming hole. A step of performing an etching process so that the hole does not come into contact with the core forming portion; a step of performing a dehydration process on a surface in the hole forming hole of the rod base material; and a step of performing a dehydration process on the rod base material. A step of taking measures to prevent the intrusion of the atmosphere into the inside, and a step of heating and stretching the rod base material to draw a fiber.
[0011]
According to the above method, the hole forming hole is provided without contacting the core forming portion. Further, since the rod material having the hole forming hole is heated and stretched, the diameter of the hole forming hole becomes small, and a part of the surface in the hole forming hole is melted, so that the surface in the hole forming hole becomes smooth. Become. Further, the surface of the hole is removed by etching the surface of the hole, and the dehydration is performed to remove the hydroxyl group on the surface of the hole. Will be blocked. From these facts, it is possible to eliminate the hydroxyl group in the hole forming hole which causes the transmission loss, and since the hole forming hole does not come into contact with the core forming portion, the side tunnel type polarization holding having a small transmission loss. Fiber can be manufactured.
[0012]
In the manufacturing method of the side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber of the present invention, before the drawing step, a support pipe may be arranged outside the rod base material so as to cover the rod base material.
[0013]
According to the above-mentioned method, the rod base material is arranged in the support pipe, and it is drawn. When arranging the support tube, the ratio of reducing the diameter of the hole by wire drawing becomes larger than when not arranging the support tube, so if a hole forming hole of the same size is opened in the rod and drawn, The diameter of the hole of the obtained fiber is smaller than when the support tube is not arranged. Thereby, a side tunnel fiber having a small hole diameter can be manufactured. Furthermore, before drawing into a fiber, heating and stretching are performed in the state of a rod material, so that the surface in the hole forming hole of the rod material can be smoothed.
[0014]
In the method for producing a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber of the present invention, the internal pressure of the hole forming hole in the drawing step may be adjusted so as to be higher than the atmospheric pressure.
[0015]
According to the above method, the core can be made elliptical because the internal pressure of the hole forming hole becomes higher than the atmospheric pressure during the wire drawing process. As a result, the mode refractive index increases, and the polarization maintaining characteristics can be improved.
[0016]
In the method for producing a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber of the present invention, the pair of hole forming holes may be plural.
[0017]
When trying to increase the diameter of the hole forming hole in order to increase the mode birefringence, distortion of the rod at the time of opening increases the crack in the rod. According to the above method, by providing a plurality of pairs of hole forming holes provided on both sides of the core forming portion, distortion of the rod can be eliminated and the rod can be prevented from cracking. The degree of freedom in design can be expanded.
[0018]
In the method for producing a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber of the present invention, the core may be doped with a rare earth element.
[0019]
According to the above method, a fiber laser or an optical amplifier having a polarization maintaining function can be manufactured by doping the core with a rare earth element.
[0020]
In the method for producing a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber of the present invention, a plurality of capillaries may be filled between the rod base material and the support tube.
[0021]
According to the above method, the inner cladding is formed outside the core forming portion of the rod preform, and the outer cladding made of a capillary is formed between the rod preform and the support tube, that is, outside the inner cladding. become. Thereby, a side tunnel type polarization maintaining double clad fiber can be manufactured.
[0022]
A side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber according to the present invention is manufactured by the method for manufacturing a side tunnel type polarization maintaining fiber according to any one of
[0023]
According to the above configuration, the hydroxyl group concentration is extremely low, the influence of the hydroxyl group in the hole causing transmission loss is almost eliminated, and the value of the mode birefringence is also 1 × 10 -5 As described above, the transmission loss can be reduced while maintaining the polarization maintaining characteristic.
[0024]
