Abstract
Description
The present invention belongs to the technical field of a liquid crystal device having a microlens on a counter substrate and an electronic apparatus using the same, and particularly, a liquid crystal device having a microlens array on one surface of a projection type or transmission type liquid crystal device, and It belongs to the technical field of electronic equipment using this.
In a conventional liquid crystal device such as an active matrix driving method using thin film transistors, a large number of scanning lines and data lines arranged vertically and horizontally and a large number of pixel electrodes corresponding to their intersections are provided on a TFT array substrate. ing. Therefore, in such a liquid crystal device, the pixel electrodes of the individual pixels that perform display cannot be formed large because of the restrictions imposed by the positional relationship between the scanning lines and the data lines. The proportion of the area, that is, the so-called aperture ratio, tends to decrease.
Further, in the case of performing display in a so-called normally white mode in which transmission is performed when no voltage is applied and non-transmission is performed when voltage is applied, in order to improve display contrast and color reproducibility, light leakage between a pixel electrode and a data line is required. Need to be prevented. For this purpose, a light-shielding layer made of metal or the like is additionally provided on a portion of the counter substrate facing the active matrix substrate on which the TFTs and the data lines are provided and facing the TFTs and the data lines, so that light that does not contribute to display is provided. Absorb or reflect.
However, this light-shielding layer needs to be formed in a size including a margin in consideration of the bonding accuracy of the counter substrate, and therefore, there is a problem that the aperture ratio is further reduced and the display screen becomes dark. .
Therefore, in order to solve such a problem, a plurality of micro substrates are provided at positions corresponding to the respective pixels on the surface of the substrate located on the light source side facing the liquid crystal layer among the two substrates constituting the liquid crystal device. Lenses are arranged in a matrix, or another transparent plate is provided on the light source side of the liquid crystal device, and a plurality of microlenses are arranged in a matrix at positions corresponding to each pixel on one side of the transparent plate. For example, a method has been proposed in which light emitted from a light source is condensed on a pixel area by each microlens to thereby brighten a display screen, and is disclosed in, for example, JP-A-60-165621-165624. Have been.
Further, the microlens is generally manufactured by thermally deforming a photosensitive material. However, there is a problem that the photosensitive material itself is light-absorbing and the light use efficiency is reduced. In addition, when the temperature rises due to light absorption, the lens itself softens and cannot be used for high energy light. Further, from the viewpoint of light utilization efficiency, it is desirable that individual microlenses are connected to each other to form an array, and that all light incident on the entire microlens array can be collected on the microlenses. In the thermal deformation method, it was difficult to connect microlenses to each other to form a microlens array.
Therefore, in addition to the heat deformation step, a method of manufacturing a desired refractive surface shape and its array arrangement state on a substrate by engraving a convex array shape by etching has been proposed, for example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 6-194502. And so on.
However, according to the conventional manufacturing method using etching, the peripheral portion has a larger removal amount by etching than the central portion of the microlens array, and as a result, the height of the convex portion with the lens, Alternatively, there is a problem that the diameter and the like are different between the central portion and the peripheral portion, causing variations in lens characteristics.
Therefore, there has been a problem that brightness and contrast vary between the peripheral portion and the central portion of the display area of the liquid crystal device.
Therefore, it is conceivable that the aperture ratio of each pixel is made higher than before without using a microlens, but this measure is limited to some extent by the width of the pattern of the data line or the scanning line and the area of the TFT. However, the above-mentioned problem has not been solved.
The present invention has been made in view of the above-described problems. Even when a microlens manufactured through an etching process is provided, there is no variation in lens characteristics, and uniform brightness and contrast can be obtained over the entire display area. It is an object to provide a liquid crystal device that can be used and an electronic device including the liquid crystal device.
In order to solve the above problem, a liquid crystal device according to the present invention includes a pair of first and second substrates, a liquid crystal interposed between the first and second substrates, and a matrix formed on the first substrate. A first light-shielding layer formed on one of the first substrate and the second substrate along a periphery of a display area defined by the plurality of pixel electrodes; A microlens formed corresponding to the pixel electrode, wherein the microlens is formed in a region where the display region and the first light shielding layer are formed.
According to the liquid crystal device of the present invention, a microlens is provided corresponding to each pixel in which each of the pixel electrodes is provided, and light is condensed in an opening region of each pixel, so that a decrease in luminance is prevented. In particular, since light that enters outside the aperture region is also condensed on the aperture region side, a high-brightness liquid crystal device is provided.
Moreover, in the microlens, a first light-shielding layer is formed not only in the opening region but also in the first substrate or the second substrate along a periphery of a display region defined by the plurality of pixel electrodes. Since the micro-lens is also formed in the region, the micro-lens on the periphery of the display region of the plurality of micro-lenses is located in the region where the first light shielding layer is formed. Therefore, the light condensed by the microlenses on the periphery of the display area is shielded by the first light shielding layer, and does not contribute to the light condensing on the opening area. The microlenses on the peripheral side of the display area have a larger amount of engraving during the etching process than the microlenses on the central side of the display area, and have different lens characteristics. Therefore, the microlenses having different lens characteristics do not contribute to the light condensing on the aperture region, and the light is condensed on the aperture region only by the microlenses having uniform lens characteristics. Is obtained.
In order to solve the above problem, the liquid crystal device according to the present invention is the liquid crystal device according to
According to the liquid crystal device of the present invention, at least the channel formation region of the plurality of thin film transistors provided on the first substrate and the plurality of scanning lines and the plurality of data lines also provided on the first substrate are connected to the first substrate. These are respectively covered from the side facing the liquid crystal by the second light-shielding layer provided on either the substrate or the second substrate. Therefore, even when light enters from the first substrate side, the incidence of the light on the channel formation region of the thin film transistor is reliably prevented, and the generation of leak current is suppressed.
By covering the channel forming region, the scanning lines, and the data lines with the light-shielding layer, an opening region of each pixel is defined. Are covered by the second light-shielding layer that covers the scanning lines and the data lines, thereby reliably preventing the uneven brightness or the uneven contrast in the opening region caused by the non-aligned portion. Accordingly, uniform brightness and contrast can be obtained by the microlenses described above, and at the same time, generation of a leak current is suppressed, and a high-quality image can be obtained.
In order to solve the above problem, in the liquid crystal device according to the present invention, in the liquid crystal device according to
According to the liquid crystal device of the present invention, the microlenses form a so-called microlens array, and the respective condensing portions of each microlens are connected by a condensing connecting portion formed in a convex shape. Therefore, not only the light incident on the opening region but also the light incident on the outside of the opening region are collected on the opening region, so that the light use efficiency can be extremely increased.
In order to solve the above problem, the liquid crystal device according to the present invention is the liquid crystal device according to any one of
According to the liquid crystal device of the present invention, the microlens is not formed only by thermal deformation of the photosensitive material as in the related art, but by a subsequent etching process, the transparent base substrate constituting the second substrate. Therefore, the light absorption is extremely low, and the light use efficiency can be sufficiently increased as compared with the case where the photosensitive material is used as in the related art. In addition, the base substrate does not soften due to a rise in temperature, and can be used for high-energy light. Since the first light-shielding layer is formed on the cover member attached to the transparent base substrate, the first light-shielding layer can surely cover the microlenses at the ends of the matrix having different lens characteristics as described above, and have the same lens characteristics. Light can be condensed on the aperture area only by the lens. Further, since the first light-shielding layer is also attached to the cover member, the position of the light-shielding layer and the light-collecting portion of the microlens can be accurately adjusted, and a high-brightness liquid crystal device without light leakage is provided. .
In order to solve the above problem, the liquid crystal device of the present invention is characterized in that, in the liquid crystal device of the present invention, the light-shielding layer is formed on a surface of the first substrate facing the liquid crystal.
According to the liquid crystal device of the present invention, since the light-shielding layer is formed on the surface of the first substrate facing the liquid crystal, the display region defined by the plurality of pixel electrodes and the plurality of pixel electrodes can be precisely formed. Even when a position shift occurs when the liquid crystal device is placed in a light-shielding case, the display region can be set at an appropriate position in the opening of the case while allowing the position shift. .
An electronic apparatus according to the present invention includes the liquid crystal device according to the present invention.
According to the electronic apparatus of the present invention, since the liquid crystal device of the present invention is provided, high-quality display can be performed by a liquid crystal device capable of performing high-luminance display without light leakage and without uneven contrast. .
The operation and other advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from the embodiments explained below.
According to the present invention, the microlenses respectively corresponding to the opening areas of the respective pixels are provided on the first substrate, and the range in which the microlenses are provided is set to the area below the peripheral parting provided along the periphery of the display area. Since the microlens below the peripheral parting is a dummy microlens, the lens characteristics of the microlens used for the display area can be made uniform, and a liquid crystal device having high brightness and no brightness unevenness and no contrast unevenness can be provided. An electronic device capable of displaying high-quality images with a liquid crystal device can be provided.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
(Configuration of liquid crystal device)
First, the overall configuration of the liquid crystal device will be described with reference to FIGS. FIG. 1 is a block diagram showing a configuration of various wirings, peripheral circuits, and the like provided on a TFT array substrate in an embodiment of a liquid crystal device. FIG. 2 is a block diagram showing a configuration in which the TFT array substrate is formed thereon. FIG. 3 is a plan view as viewed from the counter substrate side together with the components, and FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line HH ′ of FIG. 2 including the counter substrate.
In FIG. 1, a

There is no limitation on the number of phase expansions of the image signal. However, in the case of video display, an image signal line is required for each of RGB, so if the number is a multiple of 3, the external control circuit can be relatively easily configured. . Needless to say, the
In the present embodiment, in particular, the

A data

When the
On the other hand, in the
This light-

As shown in FIG. 4, a plurality of
Therefore, the opening area of the pixel, which is defined by each scanning line and the data line and is composed of the thin film transistor and the pixel electrode, is defined by the
Therefore, in the present embodiment, a plurality of microlenses 62 are arranged in a matrix at positions corresponding to each pixel on the surface of the
In the present embodiment, as shown in FIG. 5, which is an enlarged view of a portion indicated by a circle A in FIG. 3, the position where the microlens 62 is formed is on the TFT array substrate side of the underlying substrate 2a of the
The diameter of the microlens 62 is larger than the width of the opening region defined by the light-
In the present embodiment, the microlenses 62 are provided in one-to-one correspondence with the respective pixel regions, and the effective aperture ratio of each pixel is increased to increase the brightness of the liquid crystal device. Have been.
Here, a manufacturing process of the
(Manufacturing process of counter substrate)
First, a metal film such as chromium or a chromium alloy is formed to a thickness of about 1000 to 2000 angstroms on a base substrate 2a formed of a neoceram or quartz substrate having a thickness of 1.0 to 1.1 mm by a sputtering method or the like. After the formation, a photolithography step and a photoetching step are performed to form an alignment mark 60 for bonding to the TFT array substrate 1 (FIG. 8A).
Next, a primer is applied to the surface of the base substrate 2a on which the alignment marks 60 are formed, and a positive photoresist as a thermally deformable photosensitive material is applied thereon to a thickness of about 7.3 μm, Pre-baking is performed to obtain a resist film having a thickness of about 7 μm (FIG. 8B).
Next, a mask in which rectangular light-shielding portions of about 15 μm in length and width are arranged in a matrix, and a light-transmitting frame of about 2 μm is formed around each light-shielding portion, is closely attached to the resist film. Overlapping, ultraviolet exposure is performed, and then development is performed according to a normal photoresist development method, followed by rinsing (FIG. 8C).
Next, the film of the photosensitive material patterned by the above-described optical patterning is heated to about 150 ° C., which is higher than the thermal deformation temperature, and post-baked. As a result, each rectangular film became a smooth convex surface, and the height from the substrate was about 7 μm (FIG. 8D).
Then, an anisotropic etching step is performed by ECR plasma etching using oxygen as an introduction gas. At this time, the selection ratio was set as follows: photosensitive material film: base substrate 2a = 1: 1. As a result, the smooth convex array shape is engraved on the base substrate 2a, and a desired microlens array is obtained (FIG. 8 (5)).
The microlens array formed in this manner has a shape as shown in FIG. 9, and the respective microlenses are connected to each other by the connecting
Next, an adhesive 63 such as an acrylic resin is applied on the surface of the base substrate 2a on which the microlens array is formed, and the base substrate 2a and the cover glass 2b are bonded to each other. Thereafter, a metal film such as chromium or a chromium alloy is formed on the cover glass 2b to a thickness of about 1000 to 2000 angstroms by a sputtering method or the like. 23 are formed (FIG. 8 (6)).
Finally, an ITO film is formed on the surface of the cover glass 2b by a sputtering method or the like to a thickness of about 1000 to 2000 angstroms, and then patterned to form a transparent common electrode 21 (FIG. 8 (7)). )).
Through the above steps, fine microlenses corresponding to each pixel can be formed, and the effective aperture ratio of each pixel can be increased, so that a liquid crystal device with high luminance can be provided.
In addition, since the microlenses 62 of the present embodiment are not only thermally deformed but also formed on the base substrate 2a of neoceram or the like by performing an etching process after the deformation, the light absorption is extremely low. The light use efficiency can be made higher than before. Also, since the microlenses 62 are formed on the base substrate 2a such as neoceram, the temperature rise due to light absorption is higher than when the microlenses 62 are formed only of a photosensitive material. Further, since softening due to temperature rise does not occur, it can be used for high energy light.
(Configuration of micro lens)
However, in the anisotropic etching step shown in FIG. 8 (5), there is a problem that the height of the convex portion of the microlens 62 from the substrate is different between the central portion and the outer peripheral portion.
That is, since the central base substrate 2a is etched along with the resist formed in a convex shape as described above, each convex portion is engraved while being affected by the peripheral convex portions. become. In contrast, in L1 and Lm, which are the outermost peripheral portions, as shown in FIG. 8 (5), adjacent convex portions exist only on one side. Therefore, the outer convex portion is carved deeper than the central convex portion. That is, the protruding portions of the outermost peripheral portions L1 and Lm are lower in height from the substrate than the protruding portions of the central portion.
The height of the protruding portions adjacent to the outermost peripheral portions L1 and Lm from the substrate is higher than that of the protruding portions of the outermost peripheral portions L1 and Lm, but lower than the central portion.
In this way, the height of the microlens becomes gradually smaller in the taper shape as compared with the central portion as it is closer to the outermost peripheral portion. As a result, the characteristics of the microlens differ between the central portion and the peripheral portion, and the liquid crystal When operated as a device, there is a problem that a difference is caused in luminance and contrast.
Therefore, in the present embodiment, in order to solve such a problem, the formation region of the microlens array is extended to the region where the
In the present embodiment, in the display area, for example, when 1024 microlens arrays are required corresponding to 1024 pixel electrodes in one horizontal scanning direction, about 20 microlenses are added to the counter substrate in addition to 1024 microlenses. 2 was formed as a dummy micro lens (dummy lens) in the area where the
In addition, as described above, the microlens 62 according to the present embodiment can sufficiently increase the light use efficiency. Therefore, the microlens 62 not only has no luminance difference or contrast difference, but also has a high luminance liquid crystal compared to the related art. It can be a device.
Further, as shown in FIG. 9, each microlens 62 is a microlens array connected by a connecting
As described above, since the light is collected by the microlens having uniform lens characteristics as described above, the light is uniformly collected over the entire display area, and high-luminance, even, and high-quality display is possible. It is. The peripheral partition is provided on the
(Other embodiments)
As an example of the
As described above, when a voltage is applied to the
Further, in the above description, the example in which the
In the embodiment described above, the
Further, instead of providing the data line driving
