Abstract
Description
【0001】
(M.Born and E.Wolf, ”Form birefringence” in Pricples of Optics(Pergamon Press, Oxford,1980))
【0003】

【0062】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a polarization optical element having polarization characteristics, and particularly to a polarization optical element suitable for use in a wavelength plate, a polarization beam splitter, a polarization mirror, an optical disk pickup, and an optical communication module.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, when the period of the structure is sufficiently shorter than the wavelength, the fine structure can be treated as a medium having an average refractive index (equivalent refractive index) for a light wave. It is also known that if the microstructure has directionality, strong optical anisotropy called “structural birefringence” appears. (M. Born and E. Wolf, "Form birefringence" in Priples of Optics (Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1980))
[0003]
FIG. 8 is a diagram for explaining the principle of “structural birefringence”.
Hereinafter, structural birefringence will be described with reference to the principle diagram shown in FIG.
[0004]
The refractive index n // of the light whose polarization direction is parallel to the groove and the refractive index n⊥ of the perpendicular light are respectively
(Equation 2)
[Equation 3]
It becomes. Here, n 1 is the refractive index of the substance on which the fine periodic structure is formed, and n 2 is the refractive index of the substance filling the groove of the periodic structure.
[0005]
Also, t is a duty ratio of the fine periodic structure,
(Equation 4)
Indicated by Here, t 1 is the width of the fine periodic structure lattice having the refractive index n 1 (width of the convex portion), and t 2 is the width of the convex portion of the fine periodic structure having the refractive index n 2 ( the fine periodic structure having the refractive index n 1 ). Concave portion, ie, the width of the groove).
[0006]
As described above, the birefringence characteristics of quartz and calcite are specific to the substance and hardly changeable, whereas “structural birefringence” is the material (refractive index n 1 , n 2 ) And the shape (duty ratio t) can be easily controlled.
[0007]
The phase difference (delay amount) Re between the light whose polarization direction is parallel to the groove and the light perpendicular to the groove is given by the height of structural birefringence (the depth of the groove) as d.
(Equation 5)
It becomes.
[0008]
FIG. 9 is a diagram illustrating an example of a 波長 wavelength plate. Since a one-dimensional periodic structure exhibits strong birefringence, a phase plate can be made using this property. As shown in FIG. 9, the circularly polarized incident light can be converted to linearly polarized outgoing light. This can be created, for example, by creating a rectangular shape on a silicon substrate by etching.
[0009]
[Non-patent document 1]
M. Born and E.A. Wolf, "Form birefringence" in Priples of Optics (Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1980).
[0010]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As shown in the above equation, the characteristics of the polarizing optical element utilizing structural birefringence are determined by the refractive indexes of the two materials, the duty ratio t of the grating, and the depth d of the groove of the grating. Therefore, if the refractive index of the medium changes due to a change in the temperature around the element, the polarization characteristic naturally changes.
[0011]
For example, in quartz (SiO 2 ), the refractive index changes by about 1 × 10 −5 by one degree of temperature change. Although the amount of this change is very small, even if it is necessary to have highly accurate polarization characteristics, this amount of change cannot be ignored. Therefore, there is a strong demand for a polarization optical element whose polarization characteristics do not change with temperature changes.
[0012]
The present invention solves the above-mentioned problems, and can provide stable optical characteristics even in a harsh temperature environment in which the ambient temperature tends to increase due to an increase in the operating temperature of various electronic components in the device. An object is to provide an optical element.

f) The invention according to claim 6 is the polarization optical element according to claim 5, further comprising a heat insulating structure for keeping the polarization optical element itself at a constant temperature. [0026]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
First, the principle of the present invention will be described.
[0027]
When the refractive indices of the substances constituting the structural birefringence change by Δn 1 ΔT and Δn 2 ΔT (temperature changes by ΔT), the refractive index n // ′ of the light whose polarization direction is parallel to the groove is perpendicular to the refractive index n // ′. The refractive index n⊥ 'of light can be written as follows.
(Equation 6)
(Equation 7)
Here, Δn 1 ΔT and Δn 2 ΔT are very small, and the calculation is performed assuming that the squares of Δn 1 ΔT and Δn 2 ΔT can be neglected, and a condition where n // = n // ′ is satisfied is obtained as follows. Become.
[0028]
Substituting equation (3) into equation (5) gives
(Equation 8)
[0029]
Since (Δn 1 ΔT) 2 and (Δn 2 ΔT) 2 are negligible,
(Equation 9)
[0030]
From n // = n // ',
(Equation 10)
[0031]
Since the inside of the route is equal,
[Equation 11]
Therefore,
(Equation 12)
from this result,
(Equation 13)
[0032]
As can be seen from equation (12), the refractive index change with temperature needs to be opposite for two substances. As a combination of such substances, there are quartz (the refractive index change per 1 degree of temperature is 1 × 10 −5 ) and silicone resin (−37 × 10 −5 ).
[0033]
Hereinafter, embodiments of the polarizing optical element according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. (Example 1)
1 and 2 are diagrams for explaining the first embodiment.
[0034]
As shown in FIG. 1, the polarizing optical element in this embodiment has a structure in which a fine periodic structure of a plurality of parallel grooves is provided on a flat substrate of

As described above,
[0036]
FIG. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of a part of the polarization optical element of FIG. 1 and shows a state in which a fine periodic structure is provided on a flat substrate of
[0037]
When light is incident on such a fine periodic structure, the light has a different refractive index depending on the polarization direction, so that a phase difference occurs between light parallel to the groove of the fine periodic structure and light perpendicular to the groove of the fine periodic structure. The fine periodic structure having the above structure functions as a polarizing optical element.
[0038]
Since the phase difference Re between the light whose polarization direction is parallel to and perpendicular to the groove of the fine periodic structure is related to the depth d of the groove in the relationship shown in Expression (4), the desired phase difference Re is obtained. In order to obtain Re, the depth d of the groove may be set to a value determined by the equation (4).
[0039]
Next, a method for manufacturing the polarizing optical element according to Example 1 as described above will be described.
First, a fine periodic structure having a plurality of parallel grooves is formed on a quartz substrate by a photolithography process and a dry etching process. In the photolithography process, the resist is patterned using an electron beam lithography apparatus or a stepper.
[0040]
Either dry-etch the fine periodic structure of the patterned resist to create a fine periodic structure on the quartz substrate, or deposit a metal film on the fine periodic structure of the patterned resist and remove the resist to remove the fine periodic structure of the metal film. After the structure is formed, it is formed by a lift-off method of performing dry etching.
[0041]
After the fine periodic structure is formed on the quartz substrate, the liquid silicone resin is applied and uniformized on the quartz substrate on which the fine periodic structure is formed, and the silicone resin is solidified. At the time of coating, a treatment such as defoaming is performed so that air bubbles do not enter. When applying the silicone resin, a spin coater can be used.
[0042]
(Example 2)
3 and 4 are diagrams for explaining the second embodiment.
As shown in FIG. 3, the polarizing optical element in the present embodiment has a fine periodic structure of a plurality of parallel grooves provided on a flat substrate of

As described in
[0044]
FIG. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of a part of the polarizing optical element of FIG. 3, in which a fine periodic structure is provided on a flat substrate of
[0045]
When light is incident on such a fine periodic structure, the light has a different refractive index depending on the polarization direction, so that a phase difference occurs between light parallel to the groove of the fine periodic structure and light perpendicular to the groove of the fine periodic structure. The fine periodic structure having the above structure functions as a polarizing optical element.
[0046]
Since the phase difference Re between the light whose polarization direction is parallel to and perpendicular to the groove of the fine periodic structure is related to the depth d of the groove in the relationship shown in Expression (4), the desired phase difference Re is obtained. In order to obtain Re, the depth d of the groove may be set to a value determined by the equation (4).
[0047]
At this time, the thickness of the silicone resin layer covered on the fine periodic structure itself does not contribute to the phase difference, and thus may be any thickness. However, its surface needs to be flat so as not to affect the aberration. In addition, if an antireflection coating is provided on both surfaces of the polarizing optical element with respect to the wavelength to be used, light efficiency can be improved.
[0048]
Next, a method for manufacturing the polarizing optical element according to Example 1 as described above will be described.
First, a fine periodic structure having a plurality of parallel grooves is formed on a quartz substrate by a photolithography process and a dry etching process. In the photolithography process, the resist is patterned using an electron beam lithography apparatus or a stepper.
[0049]
Either dry-etch the fine periodic structure of the patterned resist to create a fine periodic structure on the quartz substrate, or deposit a metal film on the fine periodic structure of the patterned resist and remove the resist to remove the fine periodic structure of the metal film. After the structure is formed, it is formed by a lift-off method of performing dry etching.
[0050]
After the fine periodic structure is formed on the quartz substrate, the liquid silicone resin is applied and uniformized on the quartz substrate on which the fine periodic structure is formed, and the silicone resin is solidified. At the time of coating, a treatment such as defoaming is performed so that air bubbles do not enter.
[0051]
When applying the silicone resin, use a spin coater to apply a sufficient thickness than the depth of the fine periodic structure, and then use a squeegee used for printing or liquid crystal creation or polish after curing. Create a flat surface.

The configuration of the present embodiment includes the polarization optical element of the first or second embodiment and a structure in which the entire polarization optical element is covered with a heat insulating material.

(Example 4)
FIG. 7 is a diagram for explaining the fourth embodiment, and shows a cross-sectional view.
In the present embodiment, as shown in FIG. 7, in addition to the configuration of the third embodiment described above, a Peltier element (thermoelectric cooling element) 13 is provided at a portion of the polarization optical element 10 constituting the structural birefringence where light does not transmit. The feature is that it is provided.
[0058]
The Peltier element 13 uses the Peltier effect, which is a phenomenon in which heat is generated or absorbed when a weak current flows through contact surfaces of different types of metals. For example, as a typical example, there is a semiconductor device composed of p-type and n-type semiconductors.
[0059]
For example, a metal film is provided on a portion of the polarization optical element 10 through which light does not pass to increase thermal conductivity. This need not be a metal film but may be any resin material such as silicon grease having a high thermal conductivity. The Peltier element 13 is arranged in this portion, and the
[0060]
By constantly supplying a constant current to the Peltier element 13, the Peltier element 13 is maintained at a constant temperature, and the temperature of the Peltier element 13 is controlled so that the polarization optical element 10 has a constant temperature.
[0061]
As a modification of the above embodiment, a temperature measuring means such as a thermocouple is provided to measure the temperature of the polarizing optical element 10, and the temperature of the polarizing optical element 10 is measured. , The temperature can be kept constant at the set temperature. This makes it possible to more accurately set the polarization characteristics of the polarization optical element 10.
