Abstract
Description
【0001】

【0274】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an optical disk device that records and reproduces information on an optical disk having tracks using light such as a semiconductor laser.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, optical disks such as DVDs (Digital Versatile Discs) have been developed as recording media capable of recording high-density and large-capacity information. For example, recordable DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, + RW, and + R standard optical disks and read-only DVD-ROM standard optical disks are known.
[0003]
The optical disk has a plurality of tracks formed in a spiral shape. Each track is defined as a groove or valley region of a recording film of a phase change material or the like formed with irregularities. Information is recorded on the recording film. Hereinafter, the surface of the recording film on which information is recorded is referred to as an “information surface”. A base material for protecting the information surface is provided on the information surface.
[0004]
The operation of a recording device for recording information on a recordable optical disk and the operation of a reproducing device for reproducing information from a read-only optical disk are as follows. First, a recording device emits light from a light source such as a semiconductor laser and focuses the light on an information surface of a rotating optical disk via a base material. The recording device changes the light intensity according to the information while performing focus control so that the focal point of the light is located on the information surface and performing tracking control so as to be located on the track. As a result, the reflectance of the recording film changes, and the change is recorded as information. On the other hand, the reproducing device receives the reflected light from the optical disc with the photodetector while performing focus control so that the focal point of the light is located on the information surface and performing tracking control so as to be located on the track. The reproducing device reproduces information based on the output of the photodetector.
[0005]
Conventional recording / reproducing devices use various techniques to prevent a decrease in access performance. For example, if there is an area where the focus jump failed due to the vertical deviation of the optical disk, the area is managed as a focus jump non-executable area, and based on the management data, an area where the focus jump can be executed is determined. Only the technique of performing a focus jump is adopted (for example, see Patent Document 1). As another example, when performing a focus jump from the first recording layer to the second recording layer, a technique is adopted in which spherical aberration correction is started simultaneously with or before the focus movement (for example, see
[0006]
In recent years, higher density and higher capacity of optical discs have been desired. At present, an optical disk having a base material thickness of 0.6 mm has been put to practical use, whereas a recording / reproducing apparatus provided with a light source having a wavelength of 650 nm and an objective lens having a numerical aperture NA (Numerical Aperture) of 0.6 has been commercialized. Has been However, in order to further increase the density and capacity of the optical disk, it is necessary to make the substrate thickness of the optical disk thinner than 0.6 mm, for example, 0.1 mm. On the other hand, as the substrate thickness of the optical disk decreases, the recording / reproducing apparatus needs to set the numerical aperture NA of the objective lens to be larger than 0.6 and the wavelength of the light source to be shorter than 650 nm. For example, it has been studied to set the numerical aperture NA to 0.85 and the wavelength of the light source to 405 nm.

[Patent Document 3] JP-A-2003-22545 (paragraph 0009)
[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
If the numerical aperture NA of the objective lens of the recording / reproducing device becomes larger than before and the wavelength of the light source becomes shorter with the increase in the density and the capacity of the optical disk, the access performance may be greatly reduced. There is. For example, if the influence of spherical aberration caused by the thickness error of the base material constituting the optical disc or the influence of vertical deviation such as surface runout when accessing the optical disc increases, the beam spot can be obtained only by the conventionally used technology. Focusing and tracking cannot be performed. In particular, since a beam spot generates spherical aberration proportional to the fourth power of the numerical aperture NA with respect to the thickness error of the same base material, the fluctuation of the spherical aberration increases as the NA increases to, for example, about 0.85. Therefore, with the conventional technique, it is impossible to prevent a decrease in access performance.

An object of the present invention is to enable stable access to an optical disk having a high density and a large capacity.

[0072]
The spherical aberration is an ideal base material thickness (hereinafter, referred to as a “reference thickness”) that is used as a reference when the actual base material thickness of the optical disc 100 (FIG. 3) is designed when designing the optical head 114 (FIG. 3). It is caused by deviation from W1. The actual substrate thickness varies depending on the position of the optical disc. Therefore, when the optical head 114 (FIG. 3) moves in the radial direction of the

[0076]
On the other hand, the gain of the open loop of the focus control system indicates the amplitude ratio of the signal before and after the addition point when a sine wave disturbance is added to the closed loop of the focus control system. More specifically, the gain of the open loop of the focus control system is determined by the amplitude of the signal caused by the added sine wave included in the output signal and the amplitude of the signal caused by the added sine wave included in the input signal. And represented by the ratio The gain of the open loop represents the gain at the frequency of the added sine wave. The gain of the open loop is proportional to the FE detection sensitivity. Therefore, when the gain is maximum, the FE detection sensitivity is maximum. From the above, it can be said that when the gain is maximum, the spherical aberration is minimum.

Next, the relationship between the spherical aberration and the jitter at the focal position of the light 113 (FIG. 8) will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 9 is a graph showing the relationship between spherical aberration and jitter. When reproducing a mark recorded on the optical disc 100 (FIG. 8), it is ideal that the timing of the edge of the binarized reproduction signal coincides with the timing at which the light 113 passes through the edge of the mark. However, when the reproduced waveform is distorted due to spherical aberration or the like, these timings do not match, and jitter occurs. Therefore, in order to minimize jitter, it is necessary to make spherical aberration zero. Note that there are factors other than the spherical aberration that cause the jitter, and therefore the jitter exists even when the spherical aberration is zero.

FIG. 10A is a graph showing the relationship between the drive value of the spherical aberration correction element 105 (FIG. 8) and the jitter. Also in the present embodiment, the case where the base material thickness of the optical disc 100 (FIG. 8) is shifted from the reference thickness W1 is shown. In the third embodiment, a spherical aberration detection unit and a gain adjustment unit are further provided for the tracking control unit, the focus control unit, and the spherical aberration control unit described in the first embodiment. The spherical aberration detection unit and the gain adjustment unit adjust the spherical aberration and the loop gain of the focus control system, respectively, and reproduce information more accurately. Specifically, the spherical aberration detection unit detects the spherical aberration at the focal position of the light 113. The spherical aberration detection unit includes a

[0101]
The principle of detecting spherical aberration will be described below with reference to FIG. In FIG. 13, a hatched area indicates a cross section of the light 113. The optical head 114 (FIG. 12) divides the reflected light from the optical disc 100 (FIG. 12) into an inner light 4-1 and an outer light 4-2 using a hologram or the like. The photodetector 112 (FIG. 12) receives the lights 4-1 and 4-2 at separate light receiving units. The spherical aberration detection circuit 150 (FIG. 12) generates an inner FE signal from the inner light 4-1 using the same generation method (astigmatism method) as the FE signal, and generates an outer FE signal from the outer light 4-2. Generate Spherical aberration is a deviation of the focus of light passing inside the objective lens 106 (FIG. 12) from the focus of light passing outside. Therefore, the spherical

Further, since the gain of the focus control system is changed according to the spherical aberration, the open loop gain of the focus control system is always constant even if there is spherical aberration.

In this embodiment, the gain of the focus control system is changed, but the gain of the tracking control system may be changed.

The relationship between the above-mentioned FE detection sensitivity SL3 and the FE detection sensitivity SL2 described in the fourth embodiment with reference to FIG. 17 is SL2 <SL3. The reason for this is that when the FE detection sensitivity is SL3, the drive value of the spherical aberration correction element 105 (FIG. 20) is (DL1 + DL2) / 2, and this is compared with the drive value DL2 when the FE detection sensitivity is SL2. This is because there is little deviation from the drive value DL1 (FIG. 6B), which is the reference of No. 4.

The determination of the focus jump failure can be realized by comparing the level of the total reflection signal AS after the focus jump (for example, full addition of the preamplifier 426), the level of the RF signal, or the level of the tracking error signal with a predetermined value. However, the present invention is not limited to this focus jump failure determination method. Since this determination method is not directly related to the present invention, a specific description is omitted.

FIG. 49 is a diagram illustrating spherical aberration according to the twelfth embodiment. In a state where the focus control is operating, light emitted from the
[0251]
When no spherical aberration occurs on the information surfaces L0 to L2, the focal point of the light on the outer peripheral side coincides with the focal point of the light on the inner peripheral side (focal point C). When the spherical aberration increases, the focus A and the focus B separate. Then, the beam spot is blurred as a whole, and the information surface is defocused. For example, when an optical lens having a NA of 0.80 or more is used, the optical disk device 23 (FIG. 47) corrects spherical aberration in accordance with each of the information surfaces L0 to L2. As a result, high-density information can be handled.
[0252]
FIGS. 50A to 50C are diagrams illustrating a range of a detection signal in which focus control according to the twelfth embodiment can be performed. When the spherical aberration is corrected, the
[0253]
As the beam spot moves away from the information surface L0 toward the substrate, the amplitude of the FE signal increases to a positive polarity. On the other hand, the amplitude of the AS signal decreases. The amplitude of the FE signal peaks at point B1, and then decreases. As described above, the FE signal has a waveform (S-shaped signal) that draws an S-shape around each of the information surfaces L0 to L2. The range in which focus control can be performed on the target information surface is, for example, a linear section between positive and negative peaks of the S-shaped signal (between points A1 and B1) or a peak between S-shaped signal peaks.

On the other hand, when the focus jump is performed with a predetermined spherical aberration, the FE signal and the AS signal as indicated by the dotted lines in FIG. 50 are obtained by the

Here, if the spherical aberration with respect to the target information surface is increased, the range in which focus control can be performed is widened. On the other hand, the absolute value of the peak value of the FE signal decreases from L1 to L2. The information plane movement control unit 402 (FIG. 46) sets the spherical aberration at the time of the focus jump so that the focus adjustment control can be executed. The information surface

As described above, according to the above-described ninth to thirteenth embodiments, the surface runout and the like are smaller at the inner peripheral side than at the outer peripheral side, and the surface runout and the like are reduced when the rotation speed is suppressed, and The performance of the focus jump can be improved by utilizing the property that the range in which the focusing control can be performed is widened by giving the spherical aberration.
[0280]
The first to thirteenth embodiments have been described above. The optical disk device described in the embodiment mainly operates based on the control of the microcomputer. The microcomputer realizes control based on the processing by executing a computer program that defines the processing described with reference to the flowcharts and the like.
