本発明は、スクリーンに対して再生画像を表示するための投射光を投射する光学ブロック及び表示装置に関するものである。

【従来の技術】
近年、液晶表示素子をライトバルブに用いたプロジェクタの開発が盛んである。この液晶表示素子において最も重要な性能は輝度(明るさ)であり、従来より、液晶表示素子には、輝度向上のためにマイクロレンズアレイが用いられている。

この液晶表示素子は、液晶層を二枚のガラスで挟んだ構造を取っている。そして、その一方のガラスには、駆動素子である薄膜トランジスタ(以下、TFT:Thin Film Transistor)及び開口部を形成し、その対向側のガラスには、マイクロレンズとなる曲面が複数配列するように形成されている。

複数のマイクロレンズを有するマイクロレンズアレイは、対向基板内にTFTと一対一で対応するように配置されている。この液晶表示素子は、マイクロレンズアレイを搭載することにより各マイクロレンズで入射光を集束させ、光を効率よく透過させることができる。

一般的に、TFTの画素各は正方格子のものが多い。それに伴い、図10に示すように従来のマイクロレンズ142は、TFTの画素151の表面に対して垂直方向を対称軸とした回転対称形状である。このような形状の従来のマイクロレンズ142によれば、円あるいは正方形の画素の開口部に対しては、集光状態が円形であることから、光を最適に集束することができる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
ところが、従来の液晶表示素子では、図11に示すように画素151において、光が透過するTFT開口部143の形状は矩形であることが多い。これは、TFT形成の際に、CS(蓄積容量)、遮光部171、コンタクト開口等を形成する必要があり、矩形の長辺の近傍にこれらを配置しているためである。つまり、画素151の開口部143が正方形になるようにこれらCS等を配置することは、現実的には困難である。現状では、図10に示すように矩形の開口部143には、光軸を中心として回転対称な形状のマイクロレンズ142が配置しているため、図11に示すように集光状態155が開口部143の内部に収まらず遮光部171によって光が遮光されてしまい、集光効率に損失が生じている。

そして、今後、画素151の高精細化が進むと、更に画素151のピッチを小さくしなければならないが、それに従って画素151の開口部143の形状を相似的に縮小することはできないため、画素151の開口部143の形状の対称性は悪くなる傾向にある。近年、特に高精細化による画素151のピッチ縮小化の要請がある。これに対して、TFTの光遮光膜あるいは液晶のリバースチルドドメインのための遮光部171は、一定以上の面積が実質的に必要となるため、画素151のピッチ縮小化に伴い、開口部143の形状の縦横比がより一対一(正方形状)からずれてくる傾向となっている。従って、今後TFTの画素151の高精細化が進むと開口部143の形状の縦横比が大きくなり、従来の液晶表示素子におけるマイクロレンズでは、図11に示す集光状態155のように遮光部171によって遮光される光がより多くなり、さらにレンズ効率が落ちてしまう。

そこで本発明は上記課題を解決し、光源からの光を効率良く利用しつつ透過率を改善し、輝度を向上することができる液晶表示素子及び表示装置を提供することを目的としている。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記目的は、請求項1の発明にあっては、スクリーンに再生画像を表示させる光学ブロックであって、光を放射する光源と、前記光源からの光を色毎に分離する色分離手段と、前記色毎に分離された光を集束するマイクロレンズが設けられたマイクロレンズアレイ及び、カラー表示用の原色に対応する複数の矩形の画素が規則的に配列した構成であって分離された色毎の光を再生画像に応じて変調する変調素子を、有する液晶表示素子と、前記再生画像に応じて変調された変調光を合成する合成手段と、合成された前記変調光を投射して前記再生画像を前記スクリーンに表示させる投射レンズとを備え、前記マイクロレンズは、前記矩形の画素の形状に合わせて前記光を楕円形状に集束する構成としたことを特徴とする光学ユニットにより、達成される。
請求項1の構成によれば、マイクロレンズが画素の形状に合わせて光を楕円形状に集束するので、各画素の矩形部分に光が遮光されることなく、各矩形の画素のほぼ全面に光が効率良く集束することで光の透過率を改善し、輝度を向上することができる。

尚、以下に述べる実施の形態は、本発明の好適な具体例であるから、技術的に好ましい種々の限定が付されているが、本発明の範囲は、以下の説明において特に本発明を限定する旨の記載がない限り、これらの形態に限られるものではない。

図1は、本発明の好ましい実施形態としての表示装置が適用されたプロジェクタ装置100の外観の一例を示す斜視図である。
プロジェクタ装置100は、光学ユニット104及びミラー62を筐体101内に内蔵している。光学ユニット104は筐体101の下部103に設けられており、ミラー62は、筐体101の中央部から上部102にかけてスクリーン61に対して傾斜するように設けられている。筐体101の前面部110には、スクリーン61が設けられている。このスクリーン61には、ミラー62で反射された光が投射される構成となっている。

このプロジェクタ装置100は、光学ユニット104に、例えば三枚の液晶ライトバルブを用いたいわゆる三板式の液晶プロジェクタ装置である。このような構成のプロジェクタ装置100は、再生画像に応じて光学ユニット104から照射された光がミラー62によって反射され、スクリーン61に再生画像が表示されるようになっている。このスクリーン61に再生された再生画像は、人間によって視認することができる。

図2は、図1に示す光学ユニット104の構成例を示す図である。尚、図2においては、図面の簡素化のため各光学部材を支持する支持部材を省略している。光学ユニット104は、図示のような光学部品を有している。ランプ22側には、マイクロレンズアレイ24a,24bがミラー33を介して配置されている。また、ランプ22及びマイクロレンズアレイ24aの間にはUV/IRカットフィルタ23が設けられている。このUV/IRカットフィルタ23は、紫外線(UV:Ultra Violet rays)や赤外線(IR:InfraRed)をカットするためのフィルタである。マイクロレンズアレイ24a,24bについては後述する。
ミラー33はマイクロレンズアレイ24aからの光をマイクロレンズアレイ24bに反射するためのミラーである。PS合成素子73は、入射光を、例えば2種類の偏光光に分離する機能を有する。そして、ランプ22からの光を赤、緑、青(R、G、B)の三色の光に偏光して液晶ライトバルブ6a,6b,6cにそれぞれ導くためのダイクロイックミラー27a,27b、ミラー28b及び、反射ミラー28a,28b,28cが光軸OLに沿って配置されている。

ダイクロイックミラー27a,27bは、それぞれランプ22からの光の分離光学手段である。分光された三色の光が通過する経路には、それぞれ集光レンズ29a,29b,29c、偏光板30a,30b,30c、液晶ライトバルブ6a,6b,6cが配置されている。これら液晶ライトバルブ6a,6b,6cは、それぞれ合成プリズムとしてのクロスプリズム5に対して各色の光を入射させる構成となっている。このクロスプリズム5では、各色の光が合成プリズムの各面から入射される構成となっている。
そしてこの合成プリズムは各色毎の光を合成し投射レンズ32に入射させるように構成されている。投射レンズ32は、クロスプリズム5から入射された光を拡大し投射する機能を有する。ここで、ダイクロイックミラー27bを通過した光は、カラートリミングコートが施されたリレーレンズ31a,31bによって青色(B)以外の色の光が除去されている。

ここで、この光学ユニット104の動作例について説明する。
メタルハライドランプ等のランプ22からの照射光は、紫外線(UV)及び赤外線(IR)がUV/IRカットフィルタ23によって遮断され、マイクロレンズアレイ24aを通過してミラー33によってマイクロレンズアレイ24bに照射される。そして、マイクロレンズアレイ24bを透過した光が、PS合成素子73及びコンデンサレンズ34を通過してダイクロイックミラー27aに照射される。このダイクロイックミラー27aでは、赤色光Rが分離反射され、分離された赤色光Rは反射ミラー28aで反射され、集光レンズ29a及び偏光板30aを透過し、赤色用の液晶ライトバルブ6aを通過する。

また、ダイクロイックミラー27aを透過した光、すなわち緑色光G及び青色光Bは、それぞれダイクロイックミラー27bにおいて緑色光Gが分離反射され、分離した緑色光Gは、集光レンズ29b及び偏光板30bを透過し、緑色用の液晶ライトバルブ6bを透過する。一方、ダイクロイックミラー27bを透過した青色光Bは、リレーレンズ31aを通過し、反射ミラー28bで反射してリレーレンズ31bを透過する。リレーレンズ31bを透過した青色光Bは、反射ミラー28cで反射し、集光レンズ29c及び偏光板30cを透過し、青色用の液晶ライトバルブ6cを透過する。

これらマイクロレンズ42と画素51は、それぞれ対面するように構成されている。つまり、マイクロレンズ42で集束された光は画素51の開口部43に集束される。この画素51は、遮光部によって画素が矩形となるように開口部43が形成されている。このように開口部43が正方形ではなく矩形に構成されているのは、この矩形の開口部43の長辺部分の遮光部にCS(蓄積容量)等が設けられているためである。つまりこのようなCSが開口部43のそばに設けられていることにより、開口部43が正方形ではなく矩形の形状であるのである。

このシミュレーションでは、シミュレーション条件である開口部43の縦横比として、短辺と長辺の比が例えば1:1である正方形、1:1.5である矩形、1:2である同じく矩形が例示されている。そして、このシミュレーション結果では、上段に本実施形態におけるマイクロレンズ42による明るさが表されており、下段に従来のマイクロレンズによる明るさが示されている。

3.本実施形態におけるマイクロレンズ42は、開口部43の縦横比が大きくなるほどその効果を増すことができる。
4.本実施形態におけるマイクロレンズ42を開口部43に最適化させた時、その曲率半径比Rx:Ryは概ね開口部43の縦横比に等しい。
