TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates generally to the field of security equipment, and more particularly to reading content that is only visible in the presence of illumination outside the visible light spectrum, i.e. ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) light. Optoelectronic document reader, wherein the content is in the form of text, images or other indicia printed on the document, or a surface embedded in the substrate of the document is visible. It relates to an optoelectronic document reader in the form of content.
[0002]
2. Description of the Related Art
Some of the known methods for improving the security of documents, such as passports or other identification documents, utilize materials that are only visible in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) light. Such materials have been added to certain inks used for security printing to print UV-visible indicia on a document, so that the average person viewing such a document may have such a mark on the document. Anyone who is unaware of the presence of such a mark but has knowledge (eg, a customs officer) will inspect such document under UV illumination and identify such mark for the purpose of assessing the authenticity of the document. . Known devices used in identifying such hidden UV printed indicia comprise a UV tube emitting UV illumination. In use, the document to be inspected is emitted by such a device in such a way that any hidden UV-visible indicia on the document fluoresces with visible light (ie becomes visible to the inspector). Under UV illumination. Disadvantageously, however, such devices serve only to illuminate a particular area, and the device itself can read (ie, interpret) invisible indicia printed using UV fluorescent ink. It is only passive in that it cannot (via an automated process). Instead, users of such known devices are required to manually view and personally interpret the resulting image to determine if the document contains any hidden marks. In addition, UV tubes have redundant stabilization times and are therefore used to address any high-speed applications such as those required by automated devices to read imprints printed with UV ink. I can't. Further, such tubes are inherently unstable (and therefore unreliable) because the peak wavelength of the illumination they produce generally varies over time.
[0003]
Accordingly, there is a need for a document reader that operates on an automated basis to process security documents having visibility only when exposed to UV or IR light, at a relatively high speed. There is also a need for a document reader that can read hidden marks printed with such UV ink (or IR-ink) over all pages. Also, depending on the particular indicia on one or more predetermined surface areas of the document to be read, the light having a frequency or frequency band within any of the infrared, visible and ultraviolet frequency bands, There is also a need for a reader that can illuminate such an area and rapidly switch from one such frequency or band to another. There is also a need for a document reader that can automatically read and interpret such indicia. In addition, there is a need for a document reader, such as one comprised of semiconductor components that allows for the reduction or elimination of moving parts.
[0004]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
According to the invention, the first indicia is invisible when illuminated with visible light and becomes visible when illuminated with invisible light in a predetermined frequency range. An optoelectronic document reader and method for automatic reading of a first mark in a readable zone is provided. A reading surface is provided for placing a document containing a machine readable zone to be read by a reader. A plurality of first light sources are located away from the reading surface and are invisible light in a predetermined frequency range (eg, UV light having a peak wavelength of 370 nm) when driven to make the first mark visible. The document is configured to illuminate a machine readable zone of the document on the reading surface. An image sensor is configured to capture an image defined by the light focused on the sensor and generate electronic data representative of the captured image. An optical path extends between the reading surface and the image sensor and includes a lens configured to focus light defining an image on the sensor. A document image including a first mark defined by light emitted and / or reflected by the machine readable zone of the document on the reading surface when the first light source is activated is transmitted to the image sensor via the optical path. Transferred and captured by this image sensor. A document controller is configured to identify the indicia from the captured image and output the identified indicia for display and / or processing.
[0005]
The first light source may be a UV LED configured to emit light in a predetermined ultraviolet frequency range, such that the first mark emits visible light when illuminated by light in the predetermined ultraviolet frequency range. Contains UV fluorescent material that emits. Preferably, the light path is folded by a plurality of reflecting surfaces inside it.
[0006]
The reader is also preferably further configured for automatic reading of the second indicia in the machine readable zone that becomes visible when illuminated with visible light. A plurality of second light sources (e.g., visible LEDs) are located away from the reading surface and configured to illuminate the machine readable zone with visible light (e.g., having a peak wavelength of 650 nm) when activated. I have. Upon actuation of the second light source, the document image includes a second mark defined by light emitted and / or reflected by the machine readable zone. Further, the document reader is preferably further configured for automatic reading of a third indicia in a machine readable zone that includes characters configured according to the OCR standard specification. A plurality of third light sources (eg, IR LEDs) are located remotely from the reading surface and illuminate the machine readable zone with light in a predetermined infrared frequency range according to the OCR standard when the third light source is driven. It is configured as follows. When the third light source is activated, the document image includes a third mark defined by light emitted and / or reflected by the machine readable zone.
[0007]
A controller configured to control the driving of the light source (e.g., on a sequential basis, such as IR, visible light, and UV); and a controller disposed in an optical path between the lens and the image sensor; An optical filter configured to remove the reflected light; and a document controller configured to identify the indicia from the captured image and output the identified indicia for display and / or processing. Can also be provided.
[0008]
The light sources are arranged such that the first row includes a first light source, the second row includes a second light source, and the third row includes a third light source, wherein each row of light sources comprises a machine. It is arranged to provide even illumination to the readable zone. Furthermore, the illumination generated from each row of light sources has an intensity corresponding to avoiding saturation of the image sensor.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The present invention is described in detail below with reference to preferred embodiments and the following figures relating thereto, in which like reference numerals designate like elements throughout.
[0010]
1 and 2 show the optical operating principle applied by a preferred embodiment of the document reader according to the invention. Controlled at high speed, three different types of LEDs emit light in the infrared frequency band: an IR LED that emits light in the visible light frequency band (visible spectrum), and a visible light LED that emits light in the visible light frequency band (visible spectrum). The
[0011]
Many security documents, such as machine readable passports (MRTD), require the International Organization for Standardization ISO1831 standard to control character reading using the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) specification and that such characters be visible. Includes printed information that must conform to both the specifications for travel documents set by the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO (9303 document, section 7.2.1). As specified in ISO 1831, any security features that appear in the machine readable zone (MRZ) of the document are in the B900 range, ie, the correctness of any OCR characters in the near infrared (900 ± 50 nm) portion of the spectrum. Should not interfere with accurate reading.
[0012]
If necessary, the dual purpose of (i) reading characters according to the above-mentioned OCR standard and (ii) illuminating the hidden IR visible marks so that such marks are visible and thus readable. An IR LED array can be used for either or both. In such an embodiment, the hidden mark would be printed on the document using a material (ie, ink) that fluoresces under IR illumination at the frequency emitted by the IR LED. In this manner, such hidden IR-visible indicia will function in the same manner as the hidden UV-visible indicia of the embodiments described herein.

The geometry of the optical path is determined by the power of lens 30 (0.058 in the embodiment described herein), field of view (FOV), and focal length (10.10 in the embodiment described herein). 3 mm). The two mirrors 20, 25 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 are used to fold the path and thus minimize its size and make it a compact reader. The F-number of the lens (selected for the described embodiment to be 2.8) is selected based on illumination, depth of focus, diffraction and aberration effects.
[0020]
Conventionally, those skilled in the art will recognize that due to the chromatic aberration effects of using multiple spectral bands and the aforementioned performance disadvantages associated with UV light tubes, it is not possible to operate the high resolution automatic image reader according to the present invention. I was thinking. Visible / invisible light LED devices that emit peak frequencies that extend near or below the visible spectrum have become known for use in laser technology. Surprisingly, Applicants have found that an array of similar solid state LED devices configured to emit UV light can be successfully and advantageously used in a document reader to achieve automatic UV image reading. I found that.
[0021]
Applicants have found that using appropriate UV fluorescent printing materials with appropriate UV illumination, in combination with the use of a
[0022]
The use of UV LEDs (compared to UV tubes) allows the exposure time of UV illumination to be tightly controlled and switched at high speed. Specifically, when using an LED with a stabilization time of 50 nanoseconds, the UV illumination can be switched on / off within a few milliseconds. The choice of the frequency of the UV light to be used to illuminate the document depends on the UV LED to be selected, which in turn is used by the ink or substrate used as a hidden security material to be read by the reader. It depends on the excitation material of the material. In a preferred embodiment, UV LEDs manufactured and / or supplied by Nichia Corporation (Nichia Corporation) under the product identification number NSHU550E were selected for use in UV light source arrays. This UV LED product emits a narrow band of illumination with a peak wavelength at 370 nm and has a short settling time of 50 ns (i.e., the time required from drive to reach illumination at the peak wavelength). The UV LED also has a built-in Zener diode for protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD). Here, the applicant has discovered the following. That is, when excited by light of a predetermined UV frequency (ie, light of wavelength 370 nm in the preferred embodiment), the appropriate frequency of visible light (ie, blue light of a wavelength of about 423 nm in the preferred embodiment). ), And a depth of focus sufficient to reduce the chromatic aberration effect to an acceptable level using software as described herein, and with less chromatic aberration. It has been found that in combination with the use of a
[0023]
UV fluorescent inks are well known in the art, and one of ordinary skill in the art will be able to properly select the UV fluorescent ink to use for printing hidden content on a document, as any given application. Would be easy. For example, as an application to thermal transfer printing, the ink described in US Pat. No. 6,155,168 assigned to Alps Electric Co., Ltd. of Tokyo can be selectively used. Additional sources of suitable UV fluorescent inks include Kentucky, U.S.A. S. A. Angstrom Technologies Inc. Suitable UV fluorescent electrostatic toners are available from this company for laser printing applications.

The document reader is disclosed in the assignee's pending U.S. patent application Ser. No. 09 / 553,454 and corresponding PCT Publication No. WO 01/80512, filed Apr. 19, 2000, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. (As detailed in), the following can be detected and processed: That is, a security device image, two-dimensional barcode and text, such as provided by the assignee of the present application, referred to as a Pixelplex image, using an overlaid deflection and an encrypted image based on the source image. Different types of hidden content can be detected and processed, including different types of concealed images printed with UV fluorescent ink, including such machine-readable character lines.

If necessary, the optical path includes an electrostatic mirror (not shown in FIG. 1) having a reflective state and a transparent state to authenticate an optically variable device applied to the document, such as a hologram or kinegram. be able to.

FIG. 3 shows a plan view of a sample layout of a document, i.e., a passport identification page, according to which five independent security fields containing UV fluorescent material are provided.
[0027]
[0028]
[0029]
Field 5 contains a security device Pixelplex image printed in UV fluorescent material. As shown in FIG. 3, the encrypted source image represented by the hidden Pixelplex image is preferably a picture of the passport holder as it was on the identification page when the passport was issued to the authenticated holder. , The photo of the holder of this passport will be revealed when the Pixelplex image is decoded.
[0030]
Additional security features (not shown in FIG. 3) are provided by the material of the substrate of the document page, but are not limited to any of fields 1-5. That is, it is a random distribution of UV fluorescent pulp fibers within the sheets that make up the document page. It is known that a small amount of such fibers are introduced during the normal production of security documents, and that their location is randomized within the finished paper substrate. The randomness of these fibers is useful to identify their location on a page when a document is created or published, and to provide security by associating these particular locations with that particular document. used. The document reader detects these fibers along with their location on the page and compares the read information with known information about the location of the fibers at the time of document creation or publication. If the two information do not match, the reader identifies the document as having failed the certification assessment process.

FIG. 4 illustrates the arrangement of the
[0032]
The three rows (sets) of LEDs are sequentially driven in one cycle determined based on the brightness of the printing material (ie, ink). This drive time is typically between 10 milliseconds and 2 seconds. In the normal mode of operation of the preferred embodiment, the preferred sequence order for driving the LED string is IR LED, visible LED, and then UV LED. The near-IR LED emits light at a peak frequency in the range of 900 ± 50 nm to satisfy the ISO1831 standard. Visible light LEDs emit in the range of 400 nm to 660 nm, and UV LEDs emit in the range of 360 nm to 380 nm, with peak frequencies at 650 nm and 370 nm, respectively. However, it is also possible to drive any or all of the LEDs at a given time to illuminate a particular printed image of interest to the user for a given application. For example, the IR LED can be driven when required to read text printed on a document using an optical character recognition process according to the ISO1831 standard. Similarly, the visible light LED can be driven to illuminate the visually printed content on the page read by the reader, and / or illuminate the image printed with UV fluorescent ink. Therefore, the UV LED can be driven. The illuminated image is focused on an
