【発明の属する技術分野】
この発明は、内燃機関の気筒毎に設けた点火プラグのうちの2つの点火プラグに、1系統の点火信号で2つの点火コイルを交互に駆動して交互に高電圧を供給することにより、高電圧火花を発生させて混合気を燃焼させる、いわゆる、プラグトップ型点火コイルに対する点火システムに関するものである。

図3において、11はバッテリ、22A,22Bは点火コイルを示す。
この点火コイル22A,22Bは、鉄心22aと、この鉄心22aの外周に巻かれ、一端がバッテリ11の正極に接続された一次コイル22bと、鉄心22aの外周に巻かれた二次コイル22cと、一次コイル22bの他端にコレクタが接続され、バッテリ11の負極またはアース電位にエミッタが接続されたスイッチング素子としてのトランジスタ22dとで構成されている。
そして、点火コイル22Aを構成するトランジスタ22dのベースには点火信号Saが供給され、点火コイル22Bを構成するトランジスタ22dのベースには点火信号Sbが供給される。

この4つの点火プラグ23A1 ,23A2 ,23B1 ,23B2 は、図示を省略したエンジンの各気筒にそれぞれ搭載されている。

次に、動作について説明する。
なお、この点火システムは、2系統の点火信号Sa,Sbによってその点火が制御されている。
まず、図4に示す点火信号Saの立ち上がりによって点火コイル22Aのトランジスタ22dがオンすると、点火コイル22Aの一次コイル22bにバッテリ11の電圧が印加され、一次電流が流れる。
その後、点火信号Saが立ち下がってトランジスタ22dがオフし、一次コイル22bへの一次電流が遮断されると、点火コイル22Aの二次コイル22cに高電圧を生じ、この高電圧は二次コイル22cの一端から高圧コード24A1 を介して点火プラグ23A1 に、また、二次コイル22cの他端から高圧コード24A2 を介して点火プラグ23A2 に印加され、各気筒に高電圧火花を発生させる。

また、点火信号Sbの立ち上がりによって点火コイル22Bのトランジスタ22dがオンすると、点火コイル22Bの一次コイル22bにバッテリ11の電圧が印加され、一次電流が流れる。
その後、点火信号Sbが立ち下がってトランジスタ22dがオフし、一次コイル22bへの一次電流が遮断されると、点火コイル22Bの二次コイル22cに高電圧を生じ、この高電圧は二次コイル22cの一端から高圧コード24B1 を介して点火プラグ23B1 に、また、二次コイル22cの他端から高圧コード24B2 を介して点火プラグ23B2 に印加され、各気筒に高電圧火花を発生させる。

ところで、上記した点火システムは1つの点火コイル22A(または22B)で2つの点火プラグ23A1 ,23A2 (または23B1 ,23B2 )へ高電圧を供給するため、点火コイル22A,22Bは大型化し、重量も重いものとなる。
また、点火コイル22A,22Bと点火プラグ23A1 ,23A2 ,23B1 ,23B2 とが離隔するため、その間に高圧コード24A1 ,24A2 ,24B1 ,24B2 を引き回すことになる、という問題がある。

そこで、点火コイルを点火プラグにそれぞれ対応させた、いわゆる、プラグトップ型点火コイルを採用し、点火コイルの小型化および軽量化を図るとともに、高圧コードの引き回しを回避している。

この4つの点火プラグ33A1 ,33A2 ,33B1 ,33B2 は、図示を省略したエンジンの各気筒にそれぞれ搭載されている。

次に、動作について説明する。
なお、この点火システム31は、2系統の点火信号Sa,Sbによってその点火が制御されている。
まず、図6に示す点火信号Saの立ち上がりによってトランジスタ39Aがオンすることにより、図6に示す点火信号Sa1 ,Sa2 の立ち上がりによって両トランジスタ37A1 ,37A2 がオフし、点火コイル32A1 ,32A2 のトランジスタ32dがオンすると、点火コイル32A1 ,32A2 の両一次コイル32bにバッテリ11の電圧が印加され、一次電流が流れる。
その後、点火信号Saが立ち下がって両トランジスタ39Aがオフすることにより、トランジスタ37A1 ,37A2 がオンし、両トランジスタ32dがオフして両一次コイル32bへの一次電流が遮断されると、点火コイル32A1 ,32A2 の両二次コイル32cに高電圧を生じ、この高電圧は両二次コイル32cの他端から高圧コード34A1 ,34A2 を介して点火プラグ33A1 ,33A2 に印加され、各気筒に高電圧火花を発生させる。

その後、点火信号Sbが立ち下がって両トランジスタ39Bがオフすることにより、トランジスタ37B1 ,37B2 がオンし、両トランジスタ32dがオフして両一次コイル32bへの一次電流が遮断されると、点火コイル32B1 ,32B2 の両二次コイル32cに高電圧を生じ、この高電圧は両二次コイル32cの他端から高圧コード34B1 ,34B2 を介して点火プラグ33B1 ,33B2 に印加され、各気筒に高電圧火花を発生させる。

このように、プラグトップ型点火コイルを採用した点火システム31では、点火プラグ33A1 ,33A2 (または33B1 ,33B2 )に対応させて点火コイル32A1 ,32A2 (または32B1 ,32B2 )を設けたので、点火コイル32A1 ,32A2 ,32B1 ,32B2 の小型化および軽量化が図れ、また、高圧コード34A1 ,34A2 ,34B1 ,34B2 の引き回しを回避できる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、図5に示した点火システム31は、同時に2つの点火コイル32A1 ,32A2 (または32B1 ,32B2 )が動作することになる。
すなわち、混合気への着火に必要な正規なタイミングで動作する点火コイル、例えば点火コイル32A1 (または32B1 )と、排気行程で無駄に飛火する点火コイル、例えば点火コイル32A2 (または32B2 )とがある。
このように、必要な頻度の倍の頻度で点火コイル32A1 ,32A2 ,32B1 ,32B2 が動作するので、無駄な熱が発生するとともに、信頼性にも悪影響を及ぼし兼ねない。
また、飛火に付随してノイズが発生するため、無駄な飛火をなくしてノイズを抑えることが好ましい。

この発明は、上記したような不都合を解消するためになされたもので、必要な点火コイルのみを動作させることで、無駄な発熱を抑えることができるとともに、ノイズの発生も最低限に抑えることのできる点火システムを提供するものである。

【課題を解決するための手段】
この発明は、内燃機関の気筒毎に設けた点火プラグのうちの2つの点火プラグに、1系統の点火信号で2つの点火コイルを交互に駆動して交互に高電圧を供給することにより、高電圧火花を発生させて混合気を燃焼させる点火システムであって、2つの点火プラグを設けた2つの気筒内の混合気の燃焼を別々に検出する2つの燃焼検出部と、この2つの燃焼検出部からの検出信号に基づき、非燃焼検出信号を供給した燃焼検出部に対応する点火コイルを、次の点火信号に基づいて駆動させる気筒判別部とを設けたものである。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、この発明の実施形態を図に基づいて説明する。
図1はプラグトップ型点火コイルを採用したこの発明の一実施形態である点火システムの回路図、図2は図1に示した点火システムのタイミングチャートであり、図5または図6と同一または相当部分に同一符号を付し、その説明を省略する。

上記した燃焼検出部45A1 ,45A2 ,45B1 ,45B2 は、例えば特許公報第2678986号に記載されているように、点火信号発生後の点火電圧値が第1の所定電圧値を超えた後であって、点火信号発生後の所定時間以後に点火電圧値が第2の所定電圧値以下になったときに混合気が燃焼したことを検出する構成とされ、または、例えば特許公報第3120392号に記載されているように、混合気が燃焼することにより、点火プラグの電極間の一部がイオン化されて導電性を持つため、この導電性を検出することにより、混合気が燃焼したことを検出する構成とされている。
したがって、燃焼検出部45A1 ,45A2 ,45B1 ,45B2 が、混合気の燃焼を検出すると、図2に示す燃焼検出信号Ba1 ,Ba2 ,Bb1 ,Bb2 を出力する。

次に、動作について説明する。
なお、この点火システム41は、2系統の点火信号Sa,Sbによってその点火が制御されている。
まず、図2に示す点火信号Saの立ち上がりによってトランジスタ49Aがオンすることにより、気筒判別部48Aに点火信号が供給される。
しかし、起動初期の場合、燃焼検出部45A1 ,45A2 から燃焼検出信号Ba1 ,Ba2 が気筒判別部48Aへ供給されないので、すなわち、燃焼検出部45A1 ,45A2 から非燃焼検出信号が気筒判別部48Aへ供給されるので、気筒判別部48Aは、図2に示すように、トランジスタ47A1 ,47A2 のベースへ点火信号を出力してトランジスタ47A1 ,47A2 をオフさせる。

このように、トランジスタ47A1 ,47A2 がオフし、点火コイル42A1 ,42A2 のトランジスタ42dがオンすると、点火コイル42A1 ,42A2 の一次コイル42bにバッテリ11の電圧が印加され、一次電流が流れる。
その後、点火信号Saが立ち下がってトランジスタ49Aがオフすることにより、気筒判別部48Aは点火信号を出力しなくなるため、トランジスタ47A1 ,47A2 がオンし、両トランジスタ42dがオフして両一次コイル42bへの一次電流が遮断されると、点火コイル42A1 ,42A2 の両二次コイル42cに高電圧を生じ、この高電圧は両二次コイル42cの他端から高圧コード44A1 ,44A2 を介して点火プラグ43A1 ,43A2 に印加され、各気筒に高電圧火花を発生させる。

このとき、点火プラグ43A1 が設けられた気筒に混合気が供給され、点火プラグ43A2 が設けられた気筒に混合気が供給されないと、図2に示すように、燃焼判別部45A1 は燃焼検出信号Ba1 を出力し、燃焼判別部45A2 は非燃焼検出信号を出力する。
なお、点火プラグ43A1 が設けられた気筒と、点火プラグ43A2 が設けられた気筒とには、トランジスタ49Aに点火信号Saが供給されるタイミングで、交互に混合気が供給される。

その後、点火信号Sbが立ち下がってトランジスタ49Bがオフすることにより、気筒判別部48Bは点火信号を出力しなくなるため、トランジスタ47B1 ,47B2 がオフし、両トランジスタ42dがオフして両一次コイル42bへの一次電流が遮断されると、点火コイル42B1 ,42B2 の両二次コイル42cに高電圧を生じ、この高電圧は両二次コイル42cの他端から高圧コード44B1 ,44B2 を介して点火プラグ43B1 ,43B2 に印加され、各気筒に高電圧火花を発生させる。

なお、点火プラグ43B1 が設けられた気筒と、点火プラグ43B2 が設けられた気筒とには、トランジスタ49Bに点火信号Sbが供給されるタイミングで、交互に混合気が供給される。

上述したように、この発明の一実施形態によれば、2つの点火プラグ43A1 ,43A2 (43B1 ,43B2 )を設けた2つの気筒内の混合気の燃焼を別々に検出する2つの燃焼検出部45A1 ,45A2 (45B1 ,45B2 )と、この2つの燃焼検出部45A1 ,45A2 (45B1 ,45B2 )からの検出信号に基づき、非燃焼検出信号を供給した燃焼検出部45A1 または燃焼検出部45A2 (燃焼検出部45B1 または燃焼検出部45B2 )に対応する点火コイル42A1 または点火コイル42A2 (点火コイル42B1 または点火コイル42B2 )を、次の点火信号Sa(Sb)に基づいて駆動させる気筒判別部48A(48B)とを設けることにより、混合気が供給されている気筒の点火プラグ43A1 または点火プラグ43A2 (点火プラグ43B1 または点火プラグ43B2 )のみから高電圧火花を発生させる構成にしたので、必要な点火コイル42A1 ,42A2 (42B1 ,42B2 )のみを動作させることで、無駄な発熱を抑えることができるとともに、ノイズの発生も最低限に抑えることができる。

【発明の効果】
以上のように、この発明によれば、2つの点火プラグを設けた2つの気筒内の混合気の燃焼を別々に検出する2つの燃焼検出部と、この2つの燃焼検出部からの検出信号に基づき、非燃焼検出信号を供給した燃焼検出部に対応する点火コイルを、次の点火信号に基づいて駆動させる気筒判別部とを設けることにより、混合気が供給されている気筒の点火プラグのみから高電圧火花を発生させる構成にしたので、必要な点火コイルのみを動作させることで、無駄な発熱を抑えることができるとともに、ノイズの発生も最低限に抑えることができる。
また、必要な点火コイルのみを動作させるので、すなわち、2つの点火コイルと、2つの点火プラグとを交互に動作させるので、点火コイルおよび点火コイルの寿命を向上させることができる。
