Abstract
Description
【0001】

The present invention relates to an image display device such as a liquid crystal projector for enlarging and displaying a computer image or a video image.
[0002]

In recent years, improvement in brightness has been demanded for image display devices such as liquid crystal projectors. FIG. 7 shows a configuration of a conventional projection type image display device.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In the conventional projection type image display device described above, usually, as shown in FIG.
The polarizing plate is formed by attaching a film-shaped polarizing element b to a transparent substrate a so as to exhibit predetermined polarization characteristics. Both the incident-side polarizing plate and the exit-side polarizing plate are configured by attaching a predetermined polarizing element for each color band to a transparent substrate having the same shape for each color.
[0013]
Here, the incident side polarizing plate absorbs the light whose polarization axis is turning and converts it into heat in order to adjust the polarization direction of the light incident on the liquid crystal display element. In addition, when the display color of the emission-side polarizing plate is black, the polarization axis of the polarizing plate and the amplitude of light coming out of the liquid crystal display element are orthogonal to each other. Load is very large.
[0014]
When the aperture ratio of the liquid crystal display element is low and the amount of light of the lamp to be used is small, a transparent substrate having the same shape as in the above-described conventional technique, for example, a glass substrate (a thermal conductivity of about 1.2 W / (m · K)) But enough.
[0015]
On the other hand, recently, the brightness of a projected image has been improved by increasing the power consumption of a 1.3-inch liquid crystal display element having an aperture ratio of 60% even when the number of pixels is about 770,000. Display elements have also been reduced in size.
[0016]
Also, the thermal load differs for each color band and for the incident side or the exit side.
For example, when changing the color purity of at least one color band of a plurality of color bands, the thermal load on the polarizing plate on the incident side or emission side of a specific color band increases. For this reason, the thermal load applied to some of the incident-side or exit-side polarizing plates is increased, and the performance of the polarizing plates is deteriorated.
[0017]
In order to solve the thermal burden on the polarizing plate, as disclosed in Japanese Patent No. 3049752, a transparent substrate to which a polarizing element is attached is made of a material having a higher thermal conductivity than the polarizing plate, There is known an example in which an air flow is passed before and after a transparent substrate to which a polarizing plate is attached.
[0018]
Here, as a material having a higher thermal conductivity than the polarizing plate, as proposed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. H11-231277, sapphire (42 W / () having a thermal conductivity about 40 times that of the transparent glass substrate is proposed. m · K)).
[0019]
However, sapphire is expensive, and there is a demand that its use be avoided as much as possible from a cost viewpoint. In particular, in a three-panel projection type image display device as shown in FIG. 7, there are a total of six polarizing plates on the entrance side and the exit side, and usually requires a plurality of sapphire substrates. Therefore, it leads to a large cost increase.
[0020]
Further, if the cooling fan is used to increase the cooling efficiency, there are problems such as an increase in power consumption of the cooling fan and an increase in noise.
[0021]
According to the present invention, in response to the thermal load of the polarizing plate, the heat of the polarizing plate can be effectively transmitted to the transparent substrate to efficiently radiate heat to the transparent substrate, and while image quality degradation due to heat is reliably prevented, It is an object of the present invention to provide an image display device capable of reducing cost.
[0022]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-described problems, in the first invention of the present application, a color separation unit that separates illumination light into a plurality of color lights, a plurality of image display elements that respectively modulate a plurality of color lights, and a modulation method that is performed by these image display elements. And a color synthesizing means for synthesizing the plurality of color lights thus obtained to enable color image display. A transparent substrate on which an element is attached is disposed, and in at least one of the plurality of optical paths, the thickness of the transparent substrate disposed on the incident surface side of the image display element is changed to the transparent substrate disposed on the emission surface side. (For example, about 1.2 times or more).
[0023]
Further, in the second invention of the present application, a color separation unit that separates illumination light into a plurality of color lights, a plurality of image display elements that respectively modulate a plurality of color lights, and a plurality of color lights that are modulated by the image display elements are combined. And a color synthesizing means capable of displaying a color image. A transparent substrate having a polarizing element attached to an incident surface side and an emitting surface side of the image display element in each optical path of the plurality of color lights. And in at least one of the plurality of optical paths, the thickness of the transparent substrate disposed on the emission side of the image display element is greater than the thickness of the transparent substrate disposed on the incident surface side.
(For example, approximately 1.2 times or more).
[0024]
Further, in the third invention of the present application, a color separation unit that separates illumination light into a plurality of color lights, a plurality of image display elements that respectively modulate the plurality of color lights, and a plurality of color lights that are modulated by the image display elements are combined. And a color synthesizing means capable of displaying a color image. A transparent substrate having a polarizing element attached to an incident surface side and an emitting surface side of the image display element in each optical path of the plurality of color lights. In at least one of the plurality of optical paths, the area ratio between the transparent substrate disposed on the incident surface side of the image display device and the polarizing element attached to the transparent substrate is determined on the exit surface side. The area ratio between the disposed transparent substrate and the polarizing element attached to the transparent substrate is larger (for example, about 1.2 times or more).
[0025]
In the fourth invention of the present application, a color separation unit that separates illumination light into a plurality of color lights, a plurality of image display elements that respectively modulate a plurality of color lights, and a plurality of color lights that are modulated by the image display elements are combined. And a color synthesizing means capable of displaying a color image. A transparent substrate having a polarizing element attached to an incident surface side and an emitting surface side of the image display element in each optical path of the plurality of color lights. And, in at least one of the plurality of optical paths, the area ratio between the transparent substrate disposed on the emission surface side of the image display element and the polarizing element attached to the transparent substrate is determined on the incident surface side. The area ratio between the disposed transparent substrate and the polarizing element attached to the transparent substrate is larger (for example, about 1.2 times or more).
[0026]
Further, in the fifth invention of the present application, a color separation unit that separates illumination light into a plurality of color lights, a plurality of image display elements respectively modulating the plurality of color lights, and a plurality of color lights modulated by the image display elements are combined. And a color synthesizing means capable of displaying a color image. A transparent substrate having a polarizing element attached to an incident surface side and an emitting surface side of the image display element in each optical path of the plurality of color lights. And in at least one of the plurality of optical paths, the area of the transparent substrate disposed on the incident surface side of the image display element is larger than the area of the transparent substrate disposed on the exit surface side (for example, About 1.2 times or more).
[0027]
In the sixth invention of the present application, the color separating means for separating the illumination light into a plurality of color lights, the plurality of image display elements respectively modulating the plurality of color lights, and the plurality of color lights modulated by the image display elements are combined. And a color synthesizing means capable of displaying a color image. A transparent substrate having a polarizing element attached to an incident surface side and an emitting surface side of the image display element in each optical path of the plurality of color lights. And in at least one of the plurality of optical paths, the area of the transparent substrate disposed on the exit surface side of the image display element is larger than the area of the transparent substrate disposed on the incident surface side (for example, About 1.2 times or more).
[0028]
Further, in the seventh invention of the present application, a color separation unit that separates illumination light into a plurality of color lights, a plurality of image display elements that respectively modulate the plurality of color lights, and a plurality of color lights that are modulated by the image display elements are combined. And a color synthesizing means capable of displaying a color image. A transparent substrate having a polarizing element attached to an incident surface side and an emitting surface side of the image display element in each optical path of the plurality of color lights. And in at least one of the plurality of optical paths, the surface area of the transparent substrate disposed on the incident surface side of the image display element is larger than the surface area of the transparent substrate disposed on the exit surface side (for example, About 1.2 times or more).
[0029]
Furthermore, in the eighth invention of the present application, a color separation unit that separates illumination light into a plurality of color lights, a plurality of image display elements that respectively modulate the plurality of color lights, and a plurality of color lights that are modulated by the image display elements are combined. And a color synthesizing means capable of displaying a color image. A transparent substrate having a polarizing element attached to an incident surface side and an emitting surface side of the image display element in each optical path of the plurality of color lights. And in at least one of the plurality of optical paths, the surface area of the transparent substrate disposed on the exit surface side of the image display element is larger than the surface area of the transparent substrate disposed on the incident surface side (for example, About 1.2 times or more).
[0030]
Note that the transparent substrate may be formed of glass or fluorite. In the at least one optical path, one of the transparent substrate disposed on the incident surface side and the transparent substrate disposed on the exit surface side of the image display element is formed of sapphire, and the other transparent substrate is formed of glass. Alternatively, it may be formed of fluorite.
[0031]
According to these inventions, the thickness of the transparent substrate for attaching the polarizing element, the area ratio with the polarizing element, the area or the surface area are changed corresponding to the incident side or the emitting side of the color light having a large thermal load. Thus, as a material for the transparent substrate, transparent glass (thermal conductivity: about 1.2 W / (m · K)) or fluorite (thermal conductivity: about 9.7 W / ( Even if a material such as m.K)) is used, the thermal load can be sufficiently reduced, and the cost can be reduced while preventing image deterioration.

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION

FIG. 1 shows an optical configuration of a projection type image display device according to a first embodiment of the present invention.

In FIG. 1, white illumination light emitted from a

Thereafter, the light in the red band passes through the dichroic mirror DM1, and the light in the green to blue bands is reflected by the dichroic mirror DM1. The light in the blue band passes through the dichroic mirror DM2, and the light in the green band is reflected by the dichroic mirror DM2. As a result, the illumination light is decomposed into light in a red band, a green band, and a blue band.
[0035]
Then, the light of each color is incident on the liquid

Further, the respective color bands will be described in detail. The red band light transmitted through the dichroic mirror DM1 has its optical path changed by 90 degrees by the reflection mirror M1, passes through the

The modulated red band light enters the exit side polarizing plate 10RO and the dichroic prism 11 in this order, and the light path is changed by 90 degrees by the dichroic prism 11 to enter the

The dichroic prism 11 is a so-called cross dichroic prism in which four prisms are bonded to each other with an adhesive so that a wavelength-selective reflection (dichroic) layer has a substantially cross shape. Instead of the cross dichroic prism, a so-called 3P (three-piece) prism or 4P (four-piece) prism formed by bonding three or four prisms having different shapes may be used.
[0039]
On the other hand, the green-blue band light reflected by the dichroic mirror DM1 and having its optical path changed by 90 degrees enters the dichroic mirror DM2. Since the dichroic mirror DM2 has a property of reflecting the green band light G, the green band light G is reflected here, the optical path thereof is changed by 90 degrees, the light passes through the

In particular, the incident-side polarizing plate 8RI has a larger thermal load than the emission-side polarizing plate 10RO in which the thermal load is reduced by transmitting through the liquid

[0050]
Here, the relationship between the thickness of the transparent substrate and the temperature of the surface to which the polarizing element is attached will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 3 shows a relationship between the thickness of the transparent substrate and the temperature of the surface to which the polarizing element is attached when the polarizing element having a certain area is attached to a transparent substrate having a certain area and the polarizing element generates a certain amount of heat. When the transparent substrate is formed of glass (BK7: thermal conductivity: about 1.2 W / (m · K)), fluorite (thermal conductivity: about 9.7 W / (m · K)) , And the relationship when formed with sapphire (42 W / (m · K)).
[0051]
In addition, the result shown in FIG. 3 is a case in which cooling is performed only by natural convection by air and forced cooling is not performed.
[0052]
As is clear from FIG. 3, when the transparent substrate is formed of the same material, the maximum temperature of the bonding surface is lower as the thickness of the transparent substrate is larger. That is, in order to prevent performance degradation of the polarizing element due to heat, a thicker plate is more advantageous. The same result was obtained when the polarizing element was attached to a sapphire substrate having a thickness of 0.5 mm and when the polarizing element was attached to a fluorite substrate having a thickness of 1.1 mm.
[0053]
Therefore, even if fluorite is used as the material of the
[0054]
In the present embodiment, the thickness of the fluorite
[0055]
Similarly, due to the cooling air path, etc., the thickness of the transparent substrate on the side where the thermal load is large among the incident side polarizing plate and the exit side polarizing plate provided in the green band or the blue band is made larger than the other transparent substrate. May also be made thicker.
[0056]
Further, the material of the transparent substrate is not limited to fluorite, and depending on the degree of thermal load, a glass transparent substrate can be used. In this case as well, from FIG. .2 times) or more, the difference is obvious.
[0057]
Furthermore, when the thermal load on some polarizing plates is very large, a sapphire substrate is used only for the transparent substrate of the corresponding polarizing plate, and by increasing the plate thickness, it is possible to reliably withstand the large thermal load. It can be a polarizing plate.
[0058]
As described above, in the present embodiment, the thickness of the transparent substrate of the polarizing plate on the side with a large thermal load among the incident side polarizing plate and the emitting side polarizing plate provided in the optical path of at least one color band light is set to the other. By making the thickness greater than the thickness of the transparent substrate (in other words, increasing the surface area), the heat of the polarizing plate can be effectively transmitted to the transparent substrate, and the heat can be efficiently radiated to the transparent substrate.
[0059]
(2nd Embodiment)
FIG. 4 shows an optical configuration of a projection-type image display device according to a second embodiment of the present invention. Note that components common to the first embodiment are denoted by the same reference numerals as in the first embodiment, and will not be described.

As a result, the illumination light is decomposed into light in the red band, green band, and blue band.

Here, if the color purity in the red band is reduced (to take in another color band light in the vicinity of the red band light), a bright image can be obtained. In this case, however, the thermal effect of the polarizing plate disposed in the optical path of the red band is obtained. The load increases. In particular, the incident-side polarizing plate 18RI has a larger thermal load than the emission-side polarizing plate 10RO whose thermal load is reduced by transmitting through the liquid

[0074]
Here, the relationship between the area ratio of the transparent substrate and the polarizing element and the temperature of the surface of the transparent substrate to which the polarizing element is attached will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 6 shows a case in which a polarizing element having a fixed area is adhered to a transparent substrate having a plate thickness t of 1 mm, 2 mm, or 3 mm, and the ratio of the area of the transparent substrate to the polarizing element when the polarizing element generates a certain amount of heat (the polarizing element). The area of the area where the polarizing element is adhered when the area of the transparent element is constant) and the temperature of the surface of the transparent substrate where the polarizing element is adhered, and the material of the transparent substrate is fluorite. Shows the case.
[0075]
In addition, the result shown in FIG. 6 is a case where the cooling is performed only by the natural convection by the air and the forced cooling is not performed.
[0076]
As is clear from FIG. 6, if the thickness is the same, the larger the ratio of the area of the transparent substrate to the area of the polarizing element (the area of the transparent substrate / the area of the polarizing element), the lower the maximum temperature of the bonding surface. ing. That is, in order to prevent performance degradation of the polarizing element due to heat, it is advantageous that the area ratio is large. For example, a case where a polarizing element is attached to a fluorite substrate having a plate thickness of 1 mm and an area ratio of 2.0 and a case where a polarizing element is attached to a fluorite substrate having a plate thickness of 3 mm and an area ratio of 1.2 The result is equivalent. Here, even when the material of the transparent substrate is sapphire or glass, the same characteristics as in the case of fluorite are exhibited.
[0077]
From this, even when fluorite is used as the material of the
[0078]
In the present embodiment, the area ratio between the fluorite transparent substrate used for the incident-side polarizing plate provided in the optical path of the red band light and the polarizing element attached to the fluorite is determined by the fluorescence ratio used for the emission-side polarizing plate. The case where the area ratio between the stone transparent substrate and the polarizing element attached to the stone is larger than that described above is described. However, when a thermal load is applied to the emission-side polarizing plate during black display due to a cooling air path or the like. Is the area ratio between the transparent substrate used for the exit-side polarizing plate and the polarizing element attached to it, based on the area ratio between the fluorite transparent substrate used for the incident-side polarizing plate and the polarizing element attached to it. May also be increased.
[0079]
Similarly, the transparent substrate on the side where the thermal load is large among the incident side polarizing plate and the emitting side polarizing plate provided in the green band or the blue band, and the polarizing element attached to the same, due to the relationship of the cooling air path and the like. May be larger than the area ratio between the other transparent substrate and the polarizing element attached thereto.
[0080]
Further, the material of the transparent substrate is not limited to fluorite, and a glass transparent substrate can be used depending on the degree of thermal load. In this case, the area ratio is about 20% (about 1.2 times). ) Should be larger.
[0081]
Furthermore, when the thermal load on some of the polarizers is very large, the sapphire substrate is used only for the transparent substrate of the corresponding polarizer, and by increasing the area ratio, it is possible to reliably withstand the large thermal load. Polarizing plate.
[0082]
As described above, in the present embodiment, of the incident-side polarizing plate and the emitting-side polarizing plate provided in the optical path of at least one color band light, the transparent substrate of the polarizing plate on the side where the thermal load is large is attached to the transparent substrate. The area ratio with the polarizing element is made larger than the area ratio between the other transparent substrate and the polarizing element attached to the other transparent substrate (in other words, the area or surface area of the transparent substrate on the side where the thermal load is large is changed to the other transparent substrate). By making the area larger than the area or the area ratio of the substrate), the heat of the polarizing plate can be effectively transmitted to the transparent substrate, and the heat can be efficiently radiated to the transparent substrate.
[0083]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, the thickness of the transparent substrate to which the polarizing element on the side with a large thermal load among the incident side and the emitting side of the image display element in the optical path of at least one color light is attached, By making the area of the transparent substrate, the area ratio with the polarizing element, or the surface area of the transparent substrate larger than those of the other transparent substrate, the heat of the polarizing plate is effectively transmitted to the transparent substrate and the transparent substrate dissipates heat more efficiently. be able to. As a result, even if a material such as glass or fluorite having a lower thermal conductivity than sapphire or the like is used as the material of the transparent substrate, the thermal load on the polarizing plate can be effectively and sufficiently reduced, and the image quality due to heat can be reduced. Deterioration can be reliably prevented, and cost can be reduced.
[0084]
Further, by applying the present invention using sapphire to only some of the transparent substrates, the effect of reducing the thermal load can be further increased.
