携帯電話機やPDA(Personal Digital Assistants:個人用情報機器)などの携帯端末においては、携帯性重視のため小型化、軽量化が進んでいる。このため、装置自体に設置する入力装置などは簡素化され、1つのボタンに複数の機能を持たせている。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかし、このような端末装置においては、入力する文字を選択するのに、複数回キーを押下しなければならず、キー操作が煩雑となりデータ入力に時間がかかっていた。
また、パーソナルコンピュータと同様のキー配列を携帯端末に設けたものも提案され、実現に至っている。しかしながら、小さな領域に多数のキーを配置させなければならないため、キー自体やキーピッチが小さくなり、非常に取り扱いにくいという欠点があった。
また、キーボードを表示部に表示させ、付属のペンによりキーを選択して入力操作を行う端末装置も実現に至っているが、この場合、一方の手で装置を指示し、もう一方の手でペンを操作しなければならないため、両手が使用できるような状況下でなければデータ入力が困難であった。

本発明はこのような事情に鑑みてなされたもので、データ入力を煩雑なキー操作を行うことなく片手で簡単に入力できる携帯端末を提供することを目的とする。

上記目的を達成するために、本発明は、筐体の裏面に二次元座標の任意の点を選択する入力手段を備えることを特徴とする携帯端末を提供する。
なお、上記入力手段としては、一般的なポインティングデバイス、例えば、タッチパッド、トラックボール、タブレット、方向指示ボタン、ジョイスティックなどが挙げられる。

なお、本発明の携帯端末としては、いわゆるCDMA(符号分割多重接続)方式やPDC(Personal Digital Cellular System)方式などの携帯電話機の他、PDA(Personal Digital Assistants:個人用情報機器)と称される携帯型の端末も含むものとする。また、PDAの場合、通信手段を内蔵していてもよく、外部から通信手段を接続するものであっても良い。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、図面を参照し、本発明の一実施形態について説明する。
図1は本発明の一実施形態に係る携帯端末の前面図(正面図)であり、図2は、同実施形態に係る携帯端末の背面図である。
図1及び図2に示すように、携帯端末は、前面に表示部11及び前面入力部12を備え、背面に背面入力部13を備えている。
上記前面入力部12は、各種ファンクションキー、方向指示ボタンなどからなり、主に親指によって操作される。また、背面入力部13は、表示画面上の二次元座標の任意の点を選択する方向指示ボタンであり、親指以外の指によって操作される。

次に、上記構成からなる携帯端末において、スケジュールを登録する場合について説明する。
まず、ユーザは、前面入力部12の機能キーを操作することにより、スケジュール登録モードに切り替える。
係る操作が行われることにより、表示部11には、図3に示すように、カレンダー画面が表示される。

なお、図4では、全平仮名に対応するキーを表示していない。即ち、表示部11には、各行において3文字目までしか表示されていないが、背面入力部13の下方ボタンを数回押下することにより、画面がスクロールし、4文字以降の文字が表示部11に表示されることとなる。
なお、このようなキーボードの表示態様、また、キー配列については、一例であり、任意に変更可能である。
例えば、パーソナルコンピュータと同様のキー配列でアルファベットを表示させ、ローマ字入力を可能としても良い。

また、ひらがなだけでなく、数字やアルファベットを入力したい場合には、前面入力部12の機能ボタンを押下することにより、入力モードを切り替えることによって実現可能である。

以上、説明してきたように、本実施形態に係る携帯端末によれば、筐体の前面だけでなく、背面に背面入力部13を備える。
