Abstract
Description
【0001】

、仕事関数が4eV以下の膜の構成合金としては、例えばAg・Mg(Ag:0.1〜50原子%)、Al・Li(Li:0.01〜12原子%)、In・Mg(Mg:50〜80原子%)、Al・Ca(Ca:0.01〜20原子%)等が挙げられる。

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an organic EL (electroluminescence) device, and more particularly, to a compound used in a device that emits light by applying an electric field to a thin film made of an organic compound.
[0002]
[Prior art]
The organic EL element has a configuration in which a thin film containing a fluorescent organic compound is sandwiched between an electron injection electrode and a hole injection electrode, and electrons and holes are injected into the thin film and recombined to form excitons. And emits light by utilizing light emission (fluorescence / phosphorescence) when the exciton is deactivated.
[0003]
The feature of the organic EL element is that the voltage is as low as about 10 V and 100 to several 10,000 cd / m. 2 Although it is possible to emit surface light with high brightness of about the same level and emit light from blue to red by selecting the type of fluorescent substance, it has the problem that the emission life is short and storage durability is inferior. Various researches and developments are currently underway to solve these problems.
[0004]
Specifically, a method of doping a small amount of a fluorescent dye having a high fluorescence quantum yield as a means for increasing the efficiency and extending the lifetime (JP-A-5-198377, JP-A-7-135077, etc.), A method of using a bipolar light-emitting layer in which a hole-transporting material and an electron-transporting material are mixed as a light-emitting layer, expanding a carrier recombination region and improving a recombination probability to obtain a high-efficiency element (WO98 / 0836, JP-A-3-114197) and the like have been reported.
[0005]
However, when the doping method is used, most of the fluorescent dyes serving as dopants have strong concentration quenching properties, and it is necessary to control the dopant concentration at a level of several percent by weight when fabricating the device. Generally, an EL element using a low molecular compound is often prepared by a vacuum evaporation method, and it is not easy to perform such precise concentration control, which causes a narrowing of a manufacturing margin. Furthermore, in order to obtain blue light emission by doping, a dopant having a large energy gap is caused to emit light, so that a material that can be a host is limited, and it is difficult to select a combination of dopants.
[0006]
Although the recombination probability is improved even when a bipolar light emitting layer is used, it is often necessary to use a dopant having a high fluorescence quantum yield in order to finally extract energy as light. Moreover, when such a bipolar mixed light emitting layer is used, there is a problem that the driving voltage becomes relatively high.
[0007]
On the other hand, the present inventors have disclosed in JP-A-8-12600 a high-luminance light-emitting element using a phenylanthracene derivative having little physical change, photochemical change, and electrochemical change. In the blue region where the light emission is low, sufficient efficiency has not been obtained, and further improvement in characteristics is required for practical use in terms of luminous life and durability.
[0008]
In particular, when the central portion of the anthracene derivative is connected between anthracenes, the structure becomes unstable, and further, the ends of the anthracene are bonded to each other, resulting in a change in structure.
[0009]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
An object of the present invention is to provide a novel compound for an organic EL device as an optical / electronic functional material having little physical change, photochemical change, and electrochemical change, and to use this compound for an organic EL device to achieve extremely high reliability. Another object of the present invention is to realize an organic EL device having various luminescent colors having luminous efficiency.
[0010]
In particular, using an organic thin film formed by depositing a compound with a large molecular weight by vapor deposition, high reliability by suppressing the rise in drive voltage and the decrease in brightness, the leakage of current, and the appearance and growth of non-light-emitting parts when driving the device To realize a high-luminance light-emitting element.

A configuration that can also serve as a combination can be adopted. In some cases, neither the hole injection transport layer nor the electron injection transport layer may be provided. Further, each of the hole injection transport layer and the electron injection transport layer may be separately provided with a layer having an injection function and a layer having a transport function.
[0063]
The compound of the present invention is preferably used for a light emitting layer, but can also be suitably used for an electron injection / transport layer and a hole injection / transport layer.
[0064]
In addition, by controlling the film thickness in consideration of the carrier mobility and carrier density (determined by ionization potential and electron affinity) of the combined light emitting layer, electron injection / transport layer and hole injection / transport layer, the recombination region / light emission region Can be freely designed, and it is possible to design the emission color, control the emission luminance and emission spectrum by the interference effect between the two electrodes, and control the spatial distribution of the emission.
[0065]
The case where the compound of the present invention is used for a light emitting layer will be described. In the light emitting layer, in addition to the compound of the present invention, other fluorescent substances may be used. For example, styrylamine-based, ruprene derivatives, diphenylnaphthacene derivatives, pentacene derivatives, perylene derivatives, pyrene derivatives, diphenylbenzofluoranthene derivatives , Anthracene derivative, dianthracene derivative, tetraphenylbenzidine derivative and the like can be used as the light emitting material. These can be used with or instead of the compounds of the present invention.
[0066]
By using such a mixed layer, it is possible to obtain an effect of controlling the emission color and improving the chemical stability, and it is also possible to improve the emission efficiency. It is preferable to use at least one compound of the present invention in the mixed layer.
[0067]
It is particularly preferable to use an anthracene derivative and / or a dianthracene derivative for the mixed layer. By using these compounds, it becomes possible to finely adjust the electron injection amount and the mobility into the light emitting layer, to optimize the luminous efficiency, and to extend the half life of the luminance.
[0068]
A tetraphenylbenzidine derivative may be used for the mixed layer. By using the compound of the present invention in combination with a tetraphenylbenzidine derivative, it becomes possible to finely adjust the amount of holes injected into the light emitting layer and the mobility, to optimize the light emission efficiency, and to extend the luminance half life. Becomes possible.
[0069]
The content of such a fluorescent substance is 0.05 to 50% by volume, 0.1 to 30% by volume, particularly 0.1 to 10% by volume, further preferably 0.5 to 5% by volume based on the compound of the present invention. It is preferred to be volume%.
[0070]
In particular, when the compound of the present invention is used in a light-emitting layer, stable and efficient light emission can be obtained by using the compound of the present invention as a host material and combining it with a dopant. As the dopant to be used, a suitable one can be selected from the fluorescent substances exemplified above and known dopant materials. The dopant may be used alone or in combination of two or more.
[0071]
As the dopant, it is particularly preferable to use one selected from the following materials. When two or more dopants are used, it is preferable that at least one dopant is selected from the following materials. . Preferred dopants include anthracene derivatives, perylene derivatives, pyrene derivatives, naphthacene derivatives, rubrene derivatives, fluoranthene derivatives, benzo [k] fluoranthene derivatives, diindenoperylene derivatives, styrylamine derivatives, bisamino-distilbene derivatives, coumarin derivatives, and acridone derivatives. , Acridine derivatives, quinacridone derivatives and the like.

[0089]
The content of such a dopant is preferably 0.05 to 50% by volume, 0.1 to 30% by volume, particularly 0.1 to 10% by volume, more preferably 0.5 to 5% by volume based on the compound of the present invention. % Is preferable.
[0090]
The thickness of the light emitting layer, the thickness of the hole injecting and transporting layer, and the thickness of the electron injecting and transporting layer are not particularly limited, and vary depending on the forming method, but are usually preferably about 5 to 500 nm, particularly preferably 10 to 300 nm. .
[0091]
Two or more light emitting layers may be stacked. By stacking two or more light-emitting layers, light-emitting layers of different emission wavelength bands can be combined to adjust the final emission light emission color. This is particularly effective when extracting white light emission or the like, and it is desirable that the light emitting layers to be stacked are stacked adjacently from the viewpoint of optical characteristics.
[0092]
The thickness of the hole injecting and transporting layer and the thickness of the electron injecting and transporting layer depend on the design of the recombination and light emitting region, but may be about the same as the thickness of the light emitting layer or about 1/10 to 10 times. When the injection layer and the transport layer for holes or electrons are separated from each other, it is preferable that the injection layer has a thickness of 1 nm or more and the transport layer has a thickness of 1 nm or more. At this time, the upper limit of the thickness of the injection layer and the transport layer is generally about 500 nm for the injection layer and about 500 nm for the transport layer. Such a film thickness is the same when two injection / transport layers are provided.
[0093]
The hole injection transport layer has a function of facilitating the injection of holes from the hole injection electrode, a function of stably transporting holes, and a function of preventing electrons. The electron injection transport layer has a function of injecting electrons from the electron injection electrode. These layers have a function to facilitate electron transport, a function to stably transport electrons, and a function to block holes. These layers increase and confine holes and electrons injected into the light-emitting layer, and optimize the recombination region. To improve luminous efficiency.
[0094]
The hole injecting and transporting layer includes, for example, JP-A-63-295695, JP-A-2-191694, JP-A-3-792, JP-A-5-234681, and JP-A-5-239455. Various organic compounds described in JP-A-5-299174, JP-A-7-126225, JP-A-7-126226, JP-A-8-100172, EP0650955A1, and the like can be used. For example, a tetraarylbendicine compound (triaryldiamine or triphenyldiamine: TPD), an aromatic tertiary amine, a hydrazone derivative, a carbazole derivative, a triazole derivative, an imidazole derivative, an oxadiazole derivative having an amino group, polythiophene, or the like. . Two or more of these compounds may be used in combination, and when they are used in combination, they may be stacked as separate layers or mixed.
[0095]
When the hole injecting and transporting layer is provided separately for the hole injecting and transporting layer, a preferable combination can be selected from the compounds for the hole injecting and transporting layer. At this time, it is preferable to stack the layers of the compound having the smaller ionization potential in order from the hole injection electrode (ITO or the like) side. It is preferable to use a compound having a good thin film property on the surface of the hole injection electrode. Such a stacking order is the same when two or more hole injection transport layers are provided. With such a stacking order, the driving voltage is reduced, and the occurrence of current leakage and the occurrence and growth of dark spots can be prevented. In the case where the device is formed into an element, a thin film having a thickness of about 1 to 10 nm can be made uniform and pinhole-free because evaporation is used, so that the hole injection layer has a small ionization potential and has absorption in the visible region. Even when such a compound is used, it is possible to prevent a change in the color tone of the emission color or a decrease in efficiency due to reabsorption. The hole injecting and transporting layer can be formed by vapor deposition of the above compound in the same manner as the light emitting layer and the like.
[0096]
When the above compound is not used in the electron injecting and transporting layer, quinoline such as an organometallic complex having 8-quinolinol or a derivative thereof such as tris (8-quinolinolato) aluminum (Alq3) as a ligand is used. Derivatives, oxadiazole derivatives, perylene derivatives, pyridine derivatives, pyrimidine derivatives, quinoxaline derivatives, diphenylquinone derivatives, nitro-substituted fluorene derivatives, and the like can be used. The electron injection / transport layer may also serve as the light emitting layer. In such a case, it is preferable to use the light emitting layer of the present invention. The electron injecting and transporting layer may be formed by vapor deposition or the like, similarly to the light emitting layer.
[0097]
When the electron injecting and transporting layer is divided into an electron injecting layer and an electron transporting layer, a preferable combination can be selected from the compounds for the electron injecting and transporting layer. At this time, it is preferable to stack the compounds in order from the electron injection electrode side in the order of the electron affinity value. This stacking order is the same when two or more electron injection / transport layers are provided.
[0098]
For forming the hole injection transport layer, the light emitting layer and the electron injection transport layer, it is preferable to use a vacuum deposition method since a uniform thin film can be formed. When a vacuum deposition method is used, a homogeneous thin film having an amorphous state or a crystal grain size of 0.1 μm or less can be obtained. When the crystal grain size exceeds 0.1 μm, the light emission becomes non-uniform, the driving voltage of the device must be increased, and the hole injection efficiency is significantly reduced.
[0099]
The conditions for vacuum deposition are not particularly limited, -4 The degree of vacuum is preferably Pa or less, and the deposition rate is preferably about 0.01 to 1 nm / sec. Further, it is preferable to form each layer continuously in a vacuum. If they are formed continuously in a vacuum, it is possible to prevent impurities from being adsorbed on the interface between the layers, so that high characteristics can be obtained. Further, the driving voltage of the element can be reduced, and the growth and generation of dark spots can be suppressed.
[0100]
In the case where a plurality of compounds are contained in one layer when a vacuum evaporation method is used to form each of these layers, it is preferable to co-deposit each boat containing the compounds by individually controlling the temperature.
[0101]
The electron injection electrode is preferably made of a metal, an alloy or an intermetallic compound having a work function of 4 eV or less. When the work function exceeds 4 eV, the electron injection efficiency decreases, and the luminous efficiency also decreases. Examples of the constituent metal of the electron injection electrode film having a work function of 4 eV or less include alkali metals such as Li, Na, and K; alkaline earth metals such as Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba; rare earth metals such as La and Ce; , Al, In, Ag, Sn, Zn, Zr and the like. Examples of the constituent alloy of the film having a work function of 4 eV or less include, for example, Ag.Mg (Ag: 0.1 to 50 at.%), Al.Li (Li: 0.01 to 12 at.%), In.Mg (Mg. : 50 to 80 atomic%), Al.Ca (Ca: 0.01 to 20 atomic%) and the like. These may be present alone or as a combination of two or more, and the mixing ratio when two or more of these are combined is arbitrary. Alternatively, a thin film of an oxide or halide of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, or a rare earth metal may be formed, and a supporting electrode (auxiliary electrode, wiring electrode) of aluminum or the like may be used.
[0102]
This electron injection electrode can be formed by a vapor deposition method, a sputtering method, or the like.
[0103]
The thickness of such an electron injecting electrode may be a certain thickness or more capable of sufficiently injecting electrons, and may be 0.1 nm or more. Although the upper limit is not particularly limited, the film thickness may be usually about 0.1 to 500 nm.
[0104]
The material and thickness of the hole injection electrode are preferably determined so that the transmittance of emitted light is 80% or more. Specifically, an oxide transparent conductive thin film is preferable. For example, tin-doped indium oxide (ITO), zinc-doped indium oxide (IZO), indium oxide (In) 2 O 3 ), Tin oxide (SnO) 2 ) And zinc oxide (ZnO) are preferred. These oxides may deviate somewhat from their stoichiometric composition. In 2 O 3 Against SnO 2 Is preferably 1 to 20% by mass, more preferably 5 to 12% by mass. In 2 O 3 The mixing ratio of ZnO is preferably 12 to 32% by mass.
[0105]
The hole injection electrode preferably has a light emission wavelength band, usually 350 to 800 nm, and particularly has a light transmittance of 80% or more, particularly 90% or more for each emitted light. Normally, emitted light is extracted through the hole injection electrode. Therefore, when the transmittance is reduced, the emission itself from the light emitting layer is attenuated, and the luminance required for the light emitting element tends not to be obtained. However, the side from which the emitted light is extracted may be 80% or more.
[0106]
The thickness of the hole injecting electrode may be a certain thickness or more capable of sufficiently injecting holes, and is preferably in the range of 50 to 500 nm, more preferably 50 to 300 nm. The upper limit is not particularly limited, but if the thickness is too large, there is a fear of peeling or the like. If the thickness is too small, there is a problem in film strength at the time of production, hole transport ability, and resistance value.
[0107]
To form a hole injection electrode, a sputtering method is preferable. As a sputtering method, a high frequency sputtering method using an RF power supply or the like is also possible, but a DC sputtering method is used in consideration of easy control of film physical properties of a hole injection electrode to be formed and smoothness of a film formation surface. Is preferred.
[0108]
Further, a protective film may be formed as needed. The protective film is SiO X And an organic material such as Teflon (registered trademark). The protective film may be transparent or opaque, and the thickness of the protective film is about 50 to 1200 nm. The protective film may be formed by a general sputtering method, a vapor deposition method, or the like in addition to the reactive sputtering method described above.
[0109]
Further, it is preferable to provide a sealing layer on the element in order to prevent oxidation of an organic layer and an electrode of the element. The sealing layer is made of an adhesive resin layer such as a commercially available low-moisture-absorbing light-curing adhesive, an epoxy-based adhesive, a silicone-based adhesive, and a cross-linked ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer adhesive sheet to prevent moisture from entering. Is used to bond and seal a sealing plate such as a glass plate. Besides a glass plate, a metal plate, a plastic plate or the like can be used.
[0110]
In the case of a configuration in which light emitted from the substrate side is extracted, a transparent or translucent material such as glass, quartz, or resin is used as the substrate material. Further, the emission color may be controlled by using a color filter film, a color conversion film containing a fluorescent substance, or a dielectric reflection film on the substrate. In the case of the reverse lamination, the substrate may be transparent or opaque, and if it is opaque, ceramics or the like may be used.
[0111]
As the color filter film, a color filter used in a liquid crystal display or the like may be used, but the characteristics of the color filter may be adjusted according to the light emitted by the organic EL, and the extraction efficiency and color purity may be optimized. .
[0112]
Further, if a color filter capable of cutting off short-wavelength external light that is absorbed by the EL element material or the fluorescence conversion layer is used, the light resistance of the element and the contrast of display are improved.
[0113]
Further, an optical thin film such as a dielectric multilayer film may be used instead of the color filter.
[0114]
In the organic EL device of the present invention, for example, as shown in FIG. 1, a hole injection electrode (anode) 2, a hole injection layer 3, a hole transport layer 4, a
[0115]
The organic EL device of the present invention is generally used as a DC-driven or pulse-driven EL device, but it can also be driven by AC. The applied voltage is usually about 2 to 30V.
