2. Description of the Related Art The autofocus system for home video cameras and the like is generally based on the contrast system. This contrast method integrates the high frequency components of the video signal within a certain range (focus area) of the video signal (luminance signal) obtained from the image sensor to obtain the focus evaluation value, and the focus evaluation value is the maximum. The focus is automatically adjusted so that As a result, the best focus (focus) at which the sharpness (contrast) of the image captured by the image sensor is maximized is obtained.

On the other hand, in an actual program production site, the cameraman adjusts the focus with the naked eye with reference to the image of the viewfinder, and there is a limit to the resolution with the viewfinder and the naked eye, so it is best to find the best focus. It's getting harder. Even if you decide that you are in focus at the time of shooting,
It is not uncommon to find out-of-focus when playing on a large monitor. Under these circumstances, there is an increasing need for autofocus that can perform accurate and reliable focus detection, which is difficult with the naked eye.

Here, it is assumed that the image subject light and the focus state detection subject light are split at a ratio of 2: 1. In this case, the first focus state detecting image pickup device 50A and the second focus state detecting image pickup device 50B respectively include the taking lens 1
One-sixth of the total amount of subject light that has passed through 4 is incident,
The remaining two thirds are incident on the image pickup devices 54R, 54G, and 54B of the camera body 12 as image subject light.

Focusing state detecting image pickup devices 50A, 50
In the video signal output from B, high-pass frequency components are first extracted by the high-pass filters 70A and 70B,
It is converted into a digital signal by the A / D converters 72A and 72B. Then, of the digital signals, only the digital signals corresponding to the pixels in the predetermined focus area are extracted by the gate circuits 74A and 74B, and the values of the extracted digital signals are added by the adders 76A and 76B. With this, the sum of the values of the high frequency components of the video signal in the focus area is obtained,
This total becomes a focus evaluation value indicating the level of sharpness of the image in the focus area.

When the focus position of the taking lens 14 is set to F1, the first focus state detecting image pickup device 50A
The focus evaluation value V A 1 obtained from the above is a value corresponding to the position F1 of the curve A. On the other hand, the focus evaluation value V B 1 obtained from the second focus state detection image pickup device 50B is the position F of the curve B.
The value corresponds to 1, which is smaller than the focus evaluation value V A 1 obtained from the first focus state imaging device 50A. Therefore, the first focus state detecting image pickup device 50A
When the focus evaluation value V A 1 obtained from the above is larger than the focus evaluation value V B 1 obtained from the second focus state detection image pickup device 50B, the focus position is set closer to the in-focus position. It can be seen that the state, that is, the state of the front pin.

On the other hand, when the focus position of the taking lens 14 is set to F2, the focus evaluation value V A2 obtained from the first focus state detecting image pickup device 50A is the position F2 of the curve A.
Corresponding to the second focus state detection image sensor 5
The focus evaluation value V B2 obtained from 0B is a value corresponding to the position F2 of the curve B. In this case, the focus evaluation value V A2 obtained from the first focus state detection image pickup device 50A is the focus evaluation value V A obtained from the second focus state detection image pickup device 50B.
It is smaller than B2 . Therefore, when the focus evaluation value V A2 obtained from the first focus state detection image pickup device 50A is smaller than the focus evaluation value V B2 obtained from the second focus state detection image pickup device 50B, the focus position is higher than the focus position. It can be seen that is also the state set to the infinity side, that is, the state of the rear pin.

On the other hand, when the focus position of the taking lens 14 is set to F3, that is, the focus position, the focus evaluation value V A2 obtained from the first focus state detecting image pickup device 50A is the position F3 of the curve A. Becomes the value corresponding to
The focus evaluation value V B2 obtained from the focus state detecting image pickup device 50B becomes a value corresponding to the position F3 of the curve B. In this case, the focus evaluation value V A3 obtained from the first focus state detection image pickup device 50A and the second focus state detection image pickup device 50B
The focus evaluation values V B3 obtained from the above are equal to each other. Therefore, the focus evaluation value V A3 obtained from the first focus state detection image sensor 50A and the second focus state detection image sensor 5

Further, in the present embodiment, the beam splitter 42 is formed in the same shape as the color separation prism 52 installed in the camera body 12, but the shape of the beam splitter is not limited to this. Instead, it may be configured as shown in FIG. 7, for example. The beam splitter 42 ′ is composed of three prisms 90, 92 and 94, and the subject light emitted from the rear end of the taking lens 14 is
First, it is incident on the first prism 90. The half mirror surface 90A of the first prism 90 splits the reflected light into the transmitted light. Of these, the reflected light is the first focus state detection image sensor 5 as the first focus state detection subject light.
0A, and the transmitted light is incident on the second prism 92. The transmitted light incident on the second prism 92 is further split into reflected light and transmitted light by the half mirror surface 92A of the second prism 92. Of these, the reflected light is the second focus state detection image sensor 5 as the second focus state detection subject light.
0B, and the transmitted light is incident on the third prism 94. Then, the transmitted light that has entered the third prism 94 enters the first relay lens 44 as the subject light for video. In this case, the image formed on the second focus state detection image pickup device 50B is inverted because it is reflected once, but there is no problem if the inversion process is performed in the signal processing unit 62.
