In the configuration in which the electrons to be irradiated are emitted from the electron source to the irradiated member, it is preferable that the electron path between the electron emitting portion and the irradiated portion is in a vacuum atmosphere. When the inside is made into a decompressed atmosphere, a force acts to deform the decompressed space due to the pressure difference from the outside atmospheric pressure. In this structure, a structure in which a spacer is provided inside can be suitably adopted.

0 and RP 101 are sealed via a spacer 102, and the inside is in a vacuum. The spacer 102 is provided to support the image display device, which is a vacuum container, from the inside to the atmospheric pressure.

At this time, the emission elements 103 are evenly arranged in the horizontal and vertical directions. As shown, the spacers 102 are arranged only in a part between the rows of the adjacent emitting elements 103. The electrons emitted from the emitting element 103 are applied to the phosphor (not shown) applied to the opening of the FP 100 by the acceleration voltage applied between the FP and RP. A light emitting point (hereinafter referred to as a bright point) is generated on the phosphor by the electron irradiation. An image is displayed by the arrangement of the bright spots.

The electric field in the vicinity may be distorted. As a result, the electron orbit is bent near the spacer 102, and the electron beam may not be irradiated to the regular position, that is, the central portion of the phosphor.

FIG. 4 is a partially enlarged view of the face plate 100 when viewed from the front. FIG. 4 (a) is a diagram when the electron beam is applied to the regular position, and FIG. 4 (b) is a diagram when the electron beam is displaced from the regular position. 110
Is a black matrix, 111 is a phosphor coated on the opening, and 102 is a spacer. The spacer 102 is not visible because it is actually on the back surface of the face plate 100, but the spacer 102 is also shown in FIG. 4 for the sake of explanation. Here, the shape of each phosphor 111 is the same over the entire FP.

Since the electron orbit near the spacer 102 is bent, the electron may not be irradiated to the regular position. FIG. 4B is an example in which the electron orbit is bent by the charging of the spacer 102. For example, when the spacer 102 is positively charged, the electron beam near the spacer 102 is attracted to the spacer 102. This suction amount differs depending on the distance from the spacer 102. The two rows above and below the spacer 102 (hereinafter referred to as first adjacent rows) have the largest suction amount because they are closest to the spacer 102, and the two rows above and below the spacer 102 closest to the spacer 102 (hereinafter referred to as the first row). The second adjacent row) has the next largest suction amount. In the following, the suction amount is large in the order of the second row closest to the third row and the second row closest to the fourth row.

As shown in (b), the black matrix 110 is covered and chipped. Bright matrix 104 is black matrix 11
When it is lacking at 0, the average brightness of the row becomes darker than the other rows. As a result, the black matrix 110 becomes darker in a row having a larger amount of chipping, and row-shaped luminance unevenness occurs. Actually, in the rows other than the first proximity row and the second proximity row,
Since the amount of movement of the bright spot 104 is small, there is no decrease in brightness that can be detected by humans.

However, conversely, the spacer 102 is negatively charged and the electron beam repels from the spacer 102. is there. Even when the electron beam repels from the spacer 102, the bright spots 104 are missing in the black matrix 110 as in the case of suction, and the row brightness is reduced.

However, when the area of the phosphor 111 is increased, the external light reflectance of the face plate 100 is increased, which causes a new problem that the black level is increased and the contrast is decreased.

Further, as a means for preventing this, if the area of the phosphor is widened over the entire face plate, there arises a problem that the contrast is lowered.

In the present embodiment, in the rows other than the first proximity row and the second proximity row, the phosphors 2 have the same vertical size of 350 μm. On the other hand, the vertical size of the phosphor 2a in the first adjacent row is 450 μm, and the phosphor 2b in the second adjacent row is
Has a vertical size of 400 μm and 4 in the vicinity of the spacer 3.
The rows spread the phosphors 2a and 2b in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the spacers 3 continue. It is considered that the first proximity row has a larger influence of the charging of the spacer 3 than the second proximity row, and thus the amount of movement of the bright spot is large. Therefore, the phosphor 2a in the first proximity row has a larger area than the phosphor 2b in the second proximity row.

Even if the electron beam is attracted, since the phosphors 2a and 2b are wide in the first proximity row and the second proximity row, bright spots are less likely to be applied to the black matrix 1. Depending on how the electric field in the vicinity of the spacer is distorted, the bright spot 4a may be reduced only in the first adjacent row in this way. Even if the bright spot 4a is reduced, the row average luminance is the same as that of the other rows. Since the bright spots 4a are reduced in the first adjacent row, even if the bright spots 4a move, it is difficult for the black matrix 1 to be covered. Therefore, the size of the phosphor 2a in the first proximity row is 350 μm, which is the same as the size of the spacer non-adjacent row. On the other hand, the bright spot 4b of the second adjacent row
Is a normal size, so that if the bright spot 4b moves, it will fall on the black matrix 1. Therefore, the size of the phosphor 2b in the second adjacent row is 400 μm as in the first embodiment.
It spreads to m and prevents the bright spot 4b from hitting the black matrix 1. According to the present embodiment, it is possible to prevent the row brightness from decreasing in the rows near the spacers 3.
