この発明は、液晶表示器を駆動するための方法に関し、より詳細には、内部の
エレメントがバリスタスイッチングエレメントでスイッチオンおよびスイッチオ
フされる、カプセル化されたNCAP大面積液晶表示器を駆動するための装置に
関する。発明の背景
この分野で知られているように、中間形態をなす液晶材料は、スメティック、
ネマティックおよびコロステロール状の液晶の一つとして分類される。本発明の
争点は、ネマティック相の中間形態の液晶材料に向けられており、その分子構造
は、高い程度に長い範囲の方位性を持つが、転移程度の長い範囲ではない。
液晶(“LC”)に電界を印加すると、それの分子に変化が生じ、光エネルギー
に対する応答特性が変化する。LC材料の中間相は、縦方向の分子で形成され、
その分子は、液晶材料が含む平面または湾曲した壁面の向きに関連して向きを変
える傾向がある。電界の印加状態下では、分子の縦方向の方位は、正の誘電体ア
ニソトロフィ液晶分子に対しては電界と平行になる傾向がある。ネマティックの
湾曲しては配列された相の(“NCAP”)LCDのごとく、球形の壁面または容
器を備えることで、分子の方位は、よりランダムに配列し、光散乱および/又は
電界の喪失で吸収の性質を現す。NCAP LC材料の性質および形成方法は、
米国特許第4,435,047号(1984)のファーガソンにより開示されている
。ここで用いた“NCAP”という言葉は、例えばポリマーのマトリックスにカ
プセル化され、印加した電界の大きさの変化で変化する光伝送特性を持つ。NC
AP材料は、偏光子を必要としないので、オン状態での伝送は、ツイストされた
ネマティックLCセルのオン状態よりも実質的により良好である。
表示目的のために有用とするために、液晶材料は、積層されるか、パッケージ
化されるか、又は、一方または双方がしばしば透明体で形成される二つの電気的
導体の間に保持される。電気的導体の間に電位差を印加することで、電界が形成
され、この電界に関連して、LC分子を極めて規則的に同方向に方位を変える。
NCAP LC材料の場合、電界は、大きく散乱させることなく、光が伝送する
状態に分子を配列し、これにより、光学的透明が現れる。
LCエレメントは、その形態がいくぶん簡略化されるが、漏れ抵抗と並列の蓄
積キャパシタからなる一つまたはより多くのRCネットワークとしてしばしば構
築される。電極の転移およびLC表示セルの失敗を避けるために、電界の極性を
周期的に反転する必要がある(例えばテレビ表示器では典型的に30ヘルツのフ
レーム速度で反転させる)。これにより、LCセルを流れるネットDC電流はゼ
ロとなる(そして、電極材料の転移が最小限にされる)。
液晶表示器(“LCD”)は、ラップトップコンピュータやパーソナルテレビお
よびモニタのごときポータブル電子デバイスに広い用途が見い出されている。エ
ッジが100ないし200ミクロンのオーダーの寸法を持つ画素(つまり画像エ
レメント)を持つ高解像度LCDが、ほぼレターサイズ(8.5インチ×11イン
チ)のサイズに実現されている。ページサイズの良好なLCDは、エッジサイズ
が典型的に200ミクロンである。その表示器は、典型的に、走査列およびデー
タ列により指示(駆動)されるマトリックスとして配列される。
NCAP LC材料による大面積の表示器の開発および製造について重要な研
究が追及されている。このような技術は、製造機械によりのみ制限される幅(例
えば1メートル)および制限無しの長さを有するNCAP LC表示材料の連続シ
ートの生産を可能にする。
典型的には、NCAP LC材料は、実質的に非透明体であり、電界の喪失(“
電界”オフ状態)でミルク色の不透明となる。NCAP LC材科は、十分な大き
さの電界の存在(“電界”オン状態)で実質的に透明体となる。その電界は、液晶
の配列における変化を導き、カプセル化された液晶材料が、高レベルの光吸収ま
たは散乱を現す状態から次第に非散乱で実質的に光に対して透明な状態にスイッ
チする。NCAP LCD画素のマトリックス配列において、十分な電界を受け
た部分では、非透明状態から透明状態への転移が発生し、一方、電界が印加され
ていない接近した画素領域では非透明状態に留まる。
バリスタは、電気および電子分野では非直線のしきい値電圧のソリッドステー
トのスイッチエレメント、つまり、非直線の抵抗に依存した電圧を現すものとし
て公知である。バリスタの電気的特性は、背部相互を結合した同一の二つのツェ
ナーダイオードを含む回路の特性と同等である。ゼロ電位に対してパルスまたは
マイナスのしきい値電圧では、バリスタは、広範囲の電流を許可するが、非直線
特性またはスロープに依存して、電圧を実質的に一定の大きさに保持または制限
する。組み立て技術および材料に依存して、バリスタは、極めて鋭いスロープを
呈するように作成され、それ故、しきい値電圧に達した時、LC画素エレメント
をターンオンさせるスイッチとして特に有用である。酸化金属のバリスタを準備
するための処理は、WO88/02921(1988)のトムソンその他により開
示されている。
極めて小さい寸法の画素のためには、バリスタは、画素のスイッチングエレメ
ントとして、現在、現実的、あるいは有効的ではない。他方、バリスタは、薄膜
トランジスタのごとき他のスイッチングエレメントで達成するには極めて困難か
つ、極めて高価である、大面積の表示器に対する画素スイッチングエレメントと
して有望である。
画素エレメントをスイッチングするバリスタを採用した複合LCDの公知例は
、Castleberryによる米特許第4,232,603号(1980)、Levinsonによ
る米特許第4,490,014号(1984)、Beckerその他による米特許第4,4
03,217号(1983)、Beckerその他によるWO91/19472(1991
)およびThompsonその他によるWO91/17553(1991)を含む。
公知技術により解決された一般的な問題は、クロストーク(つまり都合悪く隣
のセルを同時にスイッチオンすることなく)なしにLCDセルをターン“オン”
させ、そして、それを、ビデオフレーム速度でかつ、非静止の画像を不鮮明にす
ることなくターン“オフ”できる必要がある。例えば、Castleberryは、クロス
トークなしでLCDをターンオンできる駆動様式を開示しているが、各セルの漏
れ抵抗特性により確立される放電時間係数により制限されるターンオフ特性を持
つ。発明の概要
本発明の一般的な目的は、公知の駆動方式、構成、アーキテクチャーおよび方
法における制限および欠点を克服してLCDをスイッチさせるバリスタを駆動す
る方法および装置を提供する。
本発明のより特有な目的は、クロストークなしにビデオ速度で画素を能動的か
つ迅速にターンオンおよびターンオフする、バリスタでスイッチされるNCAP
LCDのマトリックスアレイを駆動するための方法および装置を提供する。
本発明の他の目的は、公知の駆動技術および方法の欠点を克服できる、エレメ
ントをスイッチするバリスタでスイッチオンおよびスイッチオフされる極めて大
面積のNCAP LCを可能にする方法を提供する。
本発明の更に別の目的は、大面積のNCAP LCDマトリックスパネルまた
はより小さい光伝送LCDマトリックスパネルにより、より高いコントラスト、
より高い解像度の大面積の表示器を提供するドライバー装置を可能にする方法を
提供する。
本発明の原理によれば、特に必ずしもNCAP LCセルでない、バリスタで
スイッチされる液晶セルのアレイを駆動するための表示ドライバーを制御するた
めに新規な方法を提供する。そのマトリックスは、好ましくは多数のスキャンラ
インおよび多数のデータラインとして配列され、バリスタでスイッチされるLC
セルは、スキャンラインおよびデータラインの交差部で両ライン間に接続される
。この駆動方法は、LCセル内の電極転移を禁止し、これにより、LCセルの寿
命を保護し延ばすために進行している正のフレームと負のフレームとにおける駆
動信号の極性反転を与える。その新規な方法は、
上記正のフレームの完成時に、負のフレームにおける初期の間隔の間に、スキ
ャンラインに印加された電位を正の電位にレベルシフトさせ、
オン状態のLCセルを持つ上記スキャンラインを、負の電位へ逆にレベルシフ
トさせ、そして、負のフレームにおけるラインのスキャン間隔の間に対して負の
電位での逆のレベルシフトを維持することにより、スキャンラインを次第に選択
し、
ラインスキャン間隔の間に多数のデータラインに正のデータパルスを選択的に
印加し、これにより、スキャンラインに接続されたLCセルをアクセスして制御
し、上記の各パルスは、データラインに印加され、これにより、スキャンライン
に沿った上記セルの特定の一つを駆動し、
負のフレーム内で残りの間隔に対して、上記ラインスキャン間隔の完成後に、
上記スキャンラインをニュートラルの電位にレベルシフトさせ、
続く正のフレームのために、初期とラインスキャン間隔との間に、スキャンお
よびデータラインに印加された電圧の極性を反転させる、
ステップを含む。
本発明の方法の一つの態様では、Vは、バリスタしきい値電圧およびLC飽和
電圧の合計にほぼ等しい電位差とすると、負のフレームの間にスキャンラインに
印加される正の電位は、+1/2Vであり、正のフレームの間にデータラインに
印加される負の電位は、特定の液晶セルで所望される灰色のレベルに応じて、0
から1/2Vの範囲にある。
本発明の更に別の態様では、その方法は、“オフ”に駆動される上記LCセル
に接続された上記スキャンの電位シフトを維持しそして再確立する一方により、
上記LCセルの一つを“オフ”状態および“オン”状態に能動的に駆動し、一方
、電位のデータパルスを、スキャンラインの電位シフトと反対の極性を持ち、か
つ、“オフ”に駆動されるために上記LCセルに結合された、データラインに印
加するステップを更に含み、これにより、上記LCセルに蓄えられた電荷を放電
させる。別の関連した態様では、その方法は、正のフレームの間に、上記データ
ラインに正レベルのデータパルスを印加する一方、上記スキャンラインの負電位
のレベルシフトを保持し再確立する一つのステップを含む。
NCAP LCセルに適した本発明の態様では、NCAP液晶セルの各飽和電
圧は、ほぼ5/12Vであり、上記各セルのバリスタスイッチエレメントのしき
い値電圧Vonはほぼ7/12Vである。最も好ましくは、Vonはほぼ50VでV
onはほぼ70Vである。本方法に基づく液晶表示マトリックスを駆動するための
表示ドライバーは、本発明に関連した一面である。
本発明のこれら及び他の目的、態様、利点および特徴は、好ましい実施例の詳
細な記述および関連する図面より明白となるであろう。図面の簡単な説明
図1Aは、“電界オフ”状態を示したNCAP LC画素の外形図である。図
1Bは、図1AのNCAP LC画素構造に電界が印加され、“電界オン”状態
を示す。

図5Aは、図3のNCAP LCDマトリックスにおける二つの異なったLC

ムのブロック図である。発明の詳細な説明
図1Aは、マトリックス表示器の使用に適した画素構造10を示す。その構造
10は、2枚の透明ポリマー支持シート12,14(例えばポリエチレンテレフタ
ート、つまりマイラー(tm))を含み、これらのシートには、電極16,18を形
成する透明導体の線(例えばインジウム酸化錫)を備える。フィルム12および1
4の間にカプセル化されたネマティクの液晶材料20が積層される。
好ましくはポリメリック材料からなる材料20は、多数の液晶本体22を、カ
プセル化し、分散化し、埋め込み、又は含むために、マチリックスまたは封じ込
み媒体を提供する。適した封じ込み媒体は、制限されず、ポリ(ビニールアルコ
ール)、ポリエチレン、アクリルおよびメタクレイリックポリマーおよびコポリ
マー、エポキシ、ポリオレフィン、ビニールポリマーおよび同等なものである。
ここで用いた“液晶”または“LC”は、その組成が単一の液晶組成、異なっ
た液晶組成の混合あるいは液晶および非液晶の混合であろうと、液晶性質を持つ
組成である。図1Aは、カプセル化された二つの液晶22を示しているが、各L
Cカプセル22は直径で0.5ない10ミクロンと極めて小さく、典型的には材
料20の1立方センチにつき1011の密度で存在する。
図1Aの“電界オフ”状態で示したように、カプセル化されたLC材料の分子
は、ランダムに分散され、表示器10は、実質的に非透明体である。この状態は
、図1Aにおいて、光エネルギーフォトンP(矢印)がLCカプセル22の一つに
侵入して散乱し、ミルク色を呈する。
図1Bに示したように、適した電源24より、電極16および18の間に十分
な電位差Vonを印加することにより、電極16および18との間に電界が確立さ
れる。その電界は、液晶カプセル22の分子を図1Bに示したように電界方向に
配列するようになり、その結果、光エネルギーフォトンPはカプセル22を通過
し、セル10は光透明状態となる。電極16および18と間に印加される電圧V
の大きさが、セル構成10における相対的な透明を決定し、公知の飽和(Vsat)
の大きさに達すると、更に電位差を増大しても光透明性に大きな変化は生じない
。本発明で用いたNCAP LCセル10を用いると、セル10に対する飽和電
圧Vsatは、典型的にはおよそ40ないし70Vであり、これは、セルの特性お
よび寸法に依存する。
図2Aは、画素セル10のごときバリスタでスイッチされるNCAP LCに
対する等価電気回路図である。計画されたスイッチング構成は画素レベルである
が、計画されたタイプの大面積表示器では、各画素は例えば1/4インチ×1/
4インチまたはそれ以上の大きさの寸法を持つ。図2Aでは、NCAP LCセ
ル10は、バリスタ26と電気的に直列に接続されている。この画素セル10は
、漏れまたは放電抵抗RLCと並列に本質的にキャパシタンスCLCを含む。そのキ
ャパシタンス値CLCは、例えば1平方センチメートルの領域を持つ1画素に対し
て0.5ないし1.7ナノファラッドのオーダーであり、一方、同じサイズのセル
に対して10メグオームまたはそれ以上の漏れ抵抗を持つ。これにより、CLCお
よびRLCで決まる放電時間係数はセル10に対しておよそ100ミリセコンドで
ある。セル10に対する、対電圧(V)の光透過性(OT)の変化特性は図2Bに示
され、ここでは、公称飽和電圧Vsatはおよそ60Vであり、この電圧で透過性
OTは、増大する電圧レベルに対して実質的に不変もしくは改善されない。
図2Aのバリスタエレメント26は、バリスタキャパシタンスCVおよび非直
線性のバリスタ抵抗RVを有する、キャパシタンスと抵抗との並列回路としてモ
ールドされてもよい。図2Cは、対電圧(V)のバリスタ26の電流変化特性を示
す。この関係は、より正確には、
I=(V/C)α
で定義される。ここでIはバリスタ26に流れる電流、Vはバリスタ26に印加
される電圧、Cはバリスタ26の寸法の関数となる定数、αはバリスタ26の非
直線性を決める定数である。αの大きさがより大きいと、バリスタ26のスイッ
チング特性または“関節”がより鋭くなる。高品位のバリスタは典型的に20な
いし50の間のαを示す。
バリスタ26の場合、バリスタキャパシタンスCVが液晶セル10のキャパシ
タンスCLCよりも小さく保つことが極めて重要である。そうでなければ、容量性
結合の問題が生じ、セル10り所望の動作を干渉する。好ましくは、バリスタ1
6のしきい値電圧Vthはおよそ40ないし80Vの範囲にある。図2Cは、バリ
スタ26の変化特性に対する電圧を示し、しきい値電圧はおよそ60Vであり、
鋭い関節または高いαを持つ。
本発明の態様によれば、LCセルの飽和電圧Vsatおよびバリスタしきい値電
圧Vthは、互いに接近するよう形成され、その結果、図2A、2Bおよび2Cに
示した実例では、飽和電圧およびバリスタしきい値電圧は共におよそ60Vであ
る。図2Aで示したLC10とバリスタ26との直列接続では、特定のLCセル
10をターンオンおよびターンオフさせるためにはほぼ120Vが要求される。
この電圧Vtotは図2Dに示される。
図3のセル10のマトリックス構成50のごとき大面積のマトリックス内で特
定のLCセルを個々に制御するには一つの問題がある。この特定の構成では、7
本のスキャン行、7本のデータ列に配列された49個のセル10が示されている
。この図3において、スキャン列は52a,52b,52c,52d,52e,52
f,52gで示され、データ行は54a,54b,54c,54d,54e,54f,
54gで示される。図3では49個の画素10のみを示している。実際には、マ
トリックスアレイ内に大面積の表示器は、数千または数万の画素を持ち、例えば
、1平方センチに付き、525×525の画素を持つ。
一般のビデオ速度での画像フレームは、ほぼ1/30秒(33.4ミリセコンド
)である。一般のビデオ表示器では、カソードレイチューブでのフリッカーを減
じ
る1方策は、フィールドインタレース方式でスキャンすることであり、第1のフ
ィールドの画素は16.7ミリセコンドでスキャンされ、第2で空間的に僅かに
オフセットされたフィールドの他の画素は16.7ミリセコンドでスキャンされ
る。LCD表示器では、第1のビデオフィールドの間に第1の極性でもってアレ
イ50の画素10のすべてをスキャンし、実質的に同一のビデオ内容を持つ第2
のビデオフィールドの期間に第2の反転した極性でもってアレイ50の画素10
のすべてをスキャンすることが公知である。この方法では、マトリックス表示器
50により二つのフィールドのビデオフレームが現れ、フィールドからフィール
ドへの反転された極性がセル内の電極材料の移動を防止し、これにより、その有
効寿命を延ばす。アレイ50の各セルをスキャンするためのスキャン期間は、L
CD内の電極移動を禁止するのに効果的ないずれかの期間であっても良いが、放
送ビデオのごときビデオがマトリックスアレイ50に表示される時は、スキャン
期間は、ビデオフィールド期間に最も重要に関連している。その期間は、例えば
NTSCの通常フォーマットの放送ビデオ信号に対しては1/60秒であり、P
ALの通常フォーマットの放送ビデオ信号に対しては1/50秒である。
ライン52aのごとき特定のスキャンラインがイネーブルされ、そして、スキ
ャン列52aに存在する特定の画素10をターンオンまたはターンオフするため
に、各データ行54が順次アクセスされる。図3の画素10'のごとき特定の画
素をターンオン(またはターンオフ)させるならば、スキャンライン52bおよび
データライン54cに合計約120Vの電圧を同時に与えることで所望の前記画
素を制御する。
LC飽和電圧に対するバリスタしきい値電圧の比を、1.5ないし1の比より
も大きくない値に固定することにより、マトリックスアレイ50の制御は、3電
圧レベルの駆動構成、例えば+1/2Vtot、0V、−1/2Vtot、または図2
Aないし2Dの例では+60V、0V、−60Vにより達成される。これにより
、もし、+60Vのパルスレベルがスキャンライン52bに印加され、同時にデ
ータライン54cに−60Vが印加されるならば、画素10'が制卸される。も
し、
“電界オン”状態ならば、120Vtotの電位差がバリスタ26を通過し、そし
て直ちに流出させ、LCセル10のキャパシタンスCLCの充電電圧を放電し、そ
して、反対の極性の電圧に置き換える。その画素は“オン”状態に留まるが、そ
のキャパシタエレメントには逆極性で充電される。他方、画素10'が“電界オ
フ”状態ならば、120Vtotの電位差はバリスタ26を通過し、LCキャパシ
タンスCLCを充電して“電界オン”状態にする。
図4Aは、例えば図3および図4の二つの画素を駆動するための通常のマトリ
ックス駆動構成を示す。これらの二つの画素は、マトリックス50の第2の行に
接続されているが、画素Aは第2のスキャンライン52bに位置し、画素Bは6
番目のスキャンライン52Fに位置する。
図4Bに示した問題は、図3の画素Aがターンオン(又はその充電の極性反転
された時)している時間t2では、画素B(これもオン)は、不本意にも都合悪くタ
ーンオフとなる。図4Bに示したように、時間t1では、画素Aに+60Vが充
電され、画素Bに+60Vが充電されている。時間t1では、スキャンライン5
2bおよびスキャンライン52fを含むすべてのスキャンラインに印加される電
圧は0である。データラインも0Vである。
時間t2では、スキャンライン52bに印加される電圧は+60Vに移行し、
行52bに印加されるデータパルスは、−60Vに移行する。スキャンライン5
2fは時間t2では0Vに留まる。行54bに−60Vのパルスが印加された時
、画素Bに対する影響により、LCセルの充電電圧を放電する方向にバリスタに
電流が流れ、その結果、画素Bがターンオフし、これと同時に画素Aがターンオ
ン(またはリフレッシュ)される。画素Bは、時間t4にて駆動されるまで放電ま
たは“オフ”状態に留まり、その時間になるとターンオンされる(画素固有のリ
フレッシュサイクル)。画素Bの時機を得ない正味の影響は、循環するマトリッ
クススキャンライン間隔の間の断片的なデューティサイクルでオン状態となり、
その結果、ハーフトーン色および特性を持つビデオイメージにおいて特に知覚ロ
スを招く。この欠点は、本発明の態様により克服される。
図5Aを参照すると、新規な駆動様式が波形により示されている。この新規な
LCセル駆動方法は、アレイのスキャンラインs1,s2,…sn(図3のマトリッ
クスのライン52aないし52gに対応)は、特定の画素がターンオンされる(t2
)まで、スキャンの初期間隔の間に逆極性(t1)に保持される。その時間でスキ
ャンラインの極性が反転され、逆最大レベルにされ、一方、アクセスされたLC
セルが所望のグレイのスケールレベルまたはハーフトーンに表示させるよう選択
された値を持つデータパルスは、スキャンラインにより印加された極性と反対の
極性が印加される。これにより、図5AのT+のスキャンフィールドでは、時間
t2にて、スキャン電位が−60Vから+60Vに反転し、データ行に印加され
たデータパルスは、画素Aに対するグレイスケールに依存して、0から−60V
の範囲内に選択された値である。
同時(t2)に、図3の画素Bに示された駆動状態は、画素Bを制御するバリス
タに電流が流れ、かつ、放電しないようにする。データパルスの間隔t2が経過
した後、スキャンライン電位は、t3,t4,t5を含む、残りのT+スキャンフィー
ルド間隔のために、例えば0Vに戻される。
時間t4では、スキャンライン(マトリックス50のライン52fに対応)は、
−60V(時間t1の始まりなのでその値に保持されている)から+60Vに反転
し、別の0Vから−60Vのデータパルスが選択されたLC画素行(例えば行5
4b)に印加される。これにより、時間t4では、画素Bがリフレッシュ(逆極性
に駆動)されるが、画素Aをアクセスする動作サイクル(t2)の期間ではターンオ
フされていない。図5Bは図5Aのスキャン間隔T+内の時間t1,t2,t3,t4,
t5の期間での画素Aおよび画素Bの充電状態の変化を示す。
図5Aに示したように、その後の画像スキャンフィールド期間(T-)では、ス
キャンおよびデータラインに印加される電圧の極性が反転され、フィールドT+
の期間に維持される絶対レベルは、次のフィールドT-でも維持される。絶対電
圧レベルをT+およびT-フィールドで保ちながら駆動用の極性を反転することに
より、すべての画素のアクティブ“オン”および“オフ”の駆動制御が、表示マ
トリックスで電極移動およびひどいクロストークおよびコントラスト低下無しに
実現される。
図5Cは、T+スキャンフィールドにおけるLC画素AおよびBの充電状態を
