As the inter-face, the demand is increasing more and more, and it is roughly classified into a self-luminous type and a light-receiving type. That is, as a self-luminous type, CRT (cathode ray tube), PDP
(Plasma display), ELD (electroluminescence display), VFD (fluorescent display tube), LED (light emitting diode), etc. The light receiving type includes LCD (liquid crystal display), ECD (electrochromic display), EPID (electrophoretic display), SPD (dispersed particle orientation type display, TBD (colored particle rotating type display), etc. All of these displays are used. It is expected that the performance will be improved due to the development of electronics, and that both the quality and the price are already in a mature stage, or that the stage will be soon or soon.

For example, recently, there has been an increasing demand for a larger display panel, but it has not been able to respond to this. The main reason is that when trying to increase the size of the display panel, the electrical resistance due to the electrodes or their wiring inevitably increases. This is the biggest factor preventing the increase in the size of the panel, and the screen size of the display is reduced. Has its own limitations. Also,
The fact that the display is made of many hard materials also makes it difficult to make the display the desired size and shape.

There is still room for improvement in terms of image quality.

This thin display uses a liquid crystal (nematic) to control the refractive index and change the total reflection of the optical waveguide, but at that time there was no good light source such as a laser or LED, and the optical transmission loss of the optical waveguide was low. It was enormous, and the alignment control of the liquid crystal used for the optical switch had not been sufficiently studied.

It has been proposed. A typical example is to use a gas laser for each of the three primary colors of RGB, one for each light source, guide the laser light therefrom into an optical fiber, and turn on and off the light by a liquid crystal switch. However, this has not reached practical use.

On is to transmit light using the higher refractive index of the liquid crystal switch. From the total reflection condition, the difference between the lower refractive index of the liquid crystal and the refractive index of the optical waveguide is large,
It is easy to predict that the restriction on the angle of incidence will be relaxed and the efficiency will be increased. Therefore, the following calculation was performed in order to obtain the optimum condition of the higher refractive index of the liquid crystal.

Therefore, the higher the refractive index of the liquid crystal material, the closer to the refractive index of the optical waveguide, and the lower the refractive index of the liquid crystal material, the higher the difference in the refractive index from the refractive index of the optical waveguide. In particular, from the viewpoint of the transmittance that affects the image quality of the display, in order to obtain a transmittance of 50% or more, T
Δn is 0.08 for E-polarized light, Δn for TM-polarized light
Is 0.064, and in order to obtain a transmittance of 90% or more, T
Δn needs to be 0.005 or more for both E-polarized light and TM-polarized light.

It is determined. First, FIG. 3 shows a method of calculating the effective refractive index when the pretilt angle θp is zero degree (the waveguide yz plane and the liquid crystal molecules are parallel). The orientation direction is φ + θ. For example, a liquid crystal material 1 (n O: 1.489, n e: 1.666)
Is used, if the tilt angle when an electric field is applied is 20 °, φ (the angle between the optical waveguide direction and the direction of the long axis of the liquid crystal closest to the direction) and the effective refractive index of the liquid crystal It can be seen that the relationship is as shown in FIG. From the above results, it is understood that φ of the liquid crystal material is preferably 10 ° or more, that is, the angle between the alignment direction and the waveguide direction is preferably 30 ° or more. When the switch is off, the total reflection angle is sin
−1 (1.494 / 1.585) = 70.5 ° or more, and the transmittance at the time of switch-on is (n ON OFF = 1.586) 9
9.9995%.

Since the one-beam coupling emits all the light to the waveguide side, it is considered that the efficiency is high. However, when the relationship between the spatial frequency and the number of radiation beams is calculated, as shown in FIG. When the refractive index n s is 1.00, one-beam combining is not possible. Conversely, the structure for this result 1 beam coupling using, as long as the use of organic polymer to the optical waveguide, since there can be no possible n f is 3.0 or more, of the portion shown in FIG. 6 alternative but to increase the difference in refractive index n c and n s seems like no. For example, a method of laminating a polymer thin film such as a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) layer 10 (refractive index n = 1.52) on the optical waveguide side can be considered.
