Rotors are generally well known and are widely used in caliper disc brakes, powertrains, clutches, and other similar machines and mechanisms. Brake rotors are typically cast from a ferrous material, such as gray cast iron, and subsequently machined in a number of working steps to form the rotor, forming opposing friction surfaces that contact the cooperating brake pads. Cast aluminum rotors help reduce the weight and corrosion problems associated with ferrous material rotors. However, the heat resistance of cast aluminum and the toughness of the brake surface are not as favorable as other types of rotors. In addition, there are some composite rotors in which different parts of the rotor are formed from different materials. In general, a solid cast iron or cast aluminum rotor may be desirable in terms of strength. Furthermore, the ability of a brake rotor to rapidly conduct and dissipate heat generated during manufacturing is a highly desirable feature, as excessive heat can lead to premature brake wear and / or failure. Accordingly, ventilated rotors are generally preferred because of their increased cooling characteristics. Therefore, it is desirable to provide a rotor that combines the desired strength of an integral rotor with the increased cooling characteristics of a ventilated rotor. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is a rotor for caliper disc brakes and the like. The rotor of the present invention includes an internal hub or hat-like portion with a central outward facing mounting surface for rotor mounting on the drive member, and a hat-like wall extending from a periphery of the mounting surface. An outer friction portion adapted to contact the cooperating friction member is connected to the hat-like wall of the hat-like portion. The outer friction portion of the rotor of the present invention includes an annular support plate, which includes friction ring portions on either side of its major surface. Each friction ring portion is formed from a plurality of circumferentially spaced fins. The plurality of fins are combined such that each fin includes a substantially flat friction surface and defines an annular, discontinuous friction surface on each side of the support plate. The friction surface is also adapted to contact a cooperating friction portion, such as a brake pad. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Referring to the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the present invention will become readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments. FIG. 1 is a front view of a rotor embodying the present invention. FIG. 2 is a side view along the line 2-2 in FIG. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT For purposes of explanation, the terms "upper", "lower", "right", "left", "rear", "front", "vertical", "horizontal", And their derivatives relate to the invention as directed in FIGS. 1 and 2. However, it will be understood that the invention takes various alternative directions, except where explicitly stated to the contrary. The specific devices and processes illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification are merely exemplary embodiments of the inventive concept, limited by the following claims. Accordingly, the specific dimensions and other physical characteristics associated with the embodiments disclosed herein are not limiting, unless otherwise expressly defined in the claims. Referring now to the drawings, FIG. 1 illustrates a rotor according to the present invention. Generally indicated by the reference numeral 10. The rotor 10 is of a type adapted for use with various mechanical devices, such as caliper disc brakes and the like. The rotor 10 includes a radially inner hub or hat-shaped portion 12. The hat-shaped portion 12 has a central mounting surface 14 for mounting the rotor 10 on an associated drive member (not shown) such as a spindle or axle. The hat-shaped portion 12 also generally includes a cylindrical shoulder or hat-shaped wall 16 extending from around the mounting surface 14. The center mounting surface 14 of the hat-shaped portion 12 of the rotor 10 is a plurality of circumferentially spaced central pilot holes 18 in which a spindle hub or the like (not shown) is tightly received. And a fastener hole 20. The fastener hole 20 is capable of receiving a fastener (not shown) for mounting the rotor 10 above the associated drive mechanism in a conventional manner. The rotor 10 also includes an outer friction portion, generally indicated by the reference numeral 30 in the drawings. The outer friction portion 30 of the rotor 10 of the present invention includes an annular core or support plate 32 extending from the hat-like wall 16 of the hat-like portion 12 and is near its inward edge (see FIG. 2, left). The support plate 32 desirably has an integral structure to increase the strength. It also includes an annular inward surface 34 and an annular outward surface 36. An inward friction ring portion 38 is provided on the inward surface 34 of the support plate 32, and an outward friction ring portion 40 is provided on the outward surface 36 of the support plate 32. The friction ring portion 38 is formed from a plurality of circumferentially spaced fins 42 extending from the inwardly facing surface 34 of the support plate 32. Similarly, the friction ring portion 40 comprises a plurality of circumferentially spaced fins 44 extending from the outwardly facing surface 36 of the support plate 32. In the illustrated preferred embodiment, the plurality of fins 42 and 44 are mirror images of one another. Therefore, further details will be discussed hereinafter with respect to fins 42 only. Each fin 42 includes a substantially flat friction surface 42a. Thus, the combination of the plurality of surfaces 42a of the fins 42 defines an annular, non-continuous friction surface adapted to contact a cooperating friction member such as a brake pad. The fins 42 extend generally in the radial direction, but it is desirable that the fins 42 be slightly offset from the actual radial direction. Most preferably, it is formed in a generally spiral shape, as illustrated in FIG. In this manner, cooperating friction members, such as brake pads, do not simultaneously cover the entire leading edge of any fin 42. The fins 42 are preferably formed to increase in width from a radially inner end to a radially outer end, as best seen in FIG. In addition, the peripheral edge defining the friction surface 42a is desirably rounded. Therefore, smooth engagement between the cooperative friction portion and the fins 42 is facilitated. Further, it is desirable that the fins 42 be formed with a size, a shape, and a specific interval so that the cooperating friction member simultaneously engages the plurality of fins 42 during braking. In many embodiments, it may be desirable for the cooperating friction members to engage three or more fins 42 simultaneously during braking. The generally radially extending space between the fins 42 should be as large as possible to provide increased airflow around the fins 42. However, the total surface area 42a engaged by the cooperating friction members must be sufficient to provide the desired braking force. In addition, in a preferred embodiment, the fins 42 are radially spaced from the radially outer surface of the hat-like wall 16 of the rotor 10 to further promote airflow around the fins 42. Provided. Of course, the shape, size, and location of the fins 42 and 44 can be varied to achieve the desired braking force and airflow characteristics. The rotor 10 of the present invention is formed from a suitable material, such as, for example, gray cast iron, aluminum, an alloy, or a composite thereof. The rotor 10 can be formed using a conventional manufacturing method such as casting. Preferably, the rotor 10 is formed from gray cast iron using conventional techniques that utilize an improved media so that the rotor structure embodies the present invention. The rotor 10 of the present invention combines the desired increased cooling characteristics of a ventilated rotor with the strength of an integral rotor.
