BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention The present invention relates to an antenna system, and more particularly to an antenna used mainly in connection with a base station in a mobile communication system. It is about the system. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART A mobile communication system generally includes a mobile terminal located within a coverage area of a base station for transmitting electromagnetic radiation to a base station and receiving such electromagnetic radiation from the base station, and a mobile terminal. In general, several such base stations are linked together via a base station controller (BSC) and a master station controller (MSC) to provide communication between a mobile terminal and its caller. Is provided with a seamless communication link. Mobile communication is generally performed within two bands. Such communication systems in the range of about 850-950 MHz are called cellular systems, and systems in the range of about 1.8-2.0 GHz are called personal communication systems (PCS). An integrated mobile application that covers both of these bands together is often referred to as a personal communication network (PCN). The present invention relates to any PCN system, that is, a system that operates in one or both frequency bands described above. The coverage area, range, and reliability of a base station are generally limited in their coverage area by the base station's received noise figure and the effective isotropic transmit radiated power (EIRP). Currently used PCN base station architectures include a vertical column array comprising a plurality of spaced radiating elements for transmission and a separate such plurality of radiating elements for reception. To use. The antenna elements are generally arranged in a straight vertical line to the support, and the distance between the terminal antenna elements is very large, often several meters. To improve performance, the receive antennas typically include two widely spaced columns that provide spatial diversity or a single orthogonal polarization column that includes two orthogonal polarization output terminals that provide polarization diversity. I have it. The radiating elements are generally conductive members disposed on a support, and these elements are usually separated by 1/3 to 1 wavelength. The antenna element is generally connected to the combiner via a short transmission line. In the case of a transmitting antenna configuration, the radiated component is provided by a terrestrial high power amplifier via a long cable, for example a 50-200 foot cable. Placing a power amplifier in a base station also requires increased power in the amplifier to eliminate insertion losses due to feed cables and combiners. In the case of a receive antenna configuration, the output of the combiner may be a short transmission line (as in a PCS system for a pole-mounted LNA) or a long cable (as in a cellular system for a base station integrated LNA). Either is supplied to the filter / low noise amplifier (LNA). Dual redundant amplifiers are commonly used where utility pole mounted electronics are used to improve reliability at the expense of complexity. In the case of a receive configuration, the increasing effective noise contributed by ohmic losses in the combiner of the array and the feed cable (depending on this length) is amplified by the low noise amplifier, thus leading to an increase in the noise figure of the system. . It is constantly desirable to improve the range, area and reliability of coverage for individual base stations used in wireless communication systems of the type described above. One way to solve this problem is to provide a redundant pair of LNAs at the top of the tower and connect these LNAs with short transmission lines and switches to a passive (ie, antenna element with combiner) antenna array. there were. However, even in this method, the loss of the combiner and the switch loss still limit the noise figure of the receiving system. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The above-mentioned problems are solved and the coverage, range and reliability of the base station are improved by improving the transmission efficiency and the reception sensitivity of the base station without sacrificing the reliability. With these improvements, the communication coverage area for a given base station can be expanded. Briefly, the above-described improvements are achieved by replacing existing antenna structures such that active phased array antennas are used with mobile communication systems. Attempts with an active phased array antenna according to the present invention include low power amplifiers (for transmission) and / or low noise amplifiers (for reception), which are as close as possible to each element of the array and generally Separated from the device by several cm or less. Antenna elements are generally arranged in rows. Alternatively, this arrangement is less versatile, as will be apparent from the description below, but the filters and amplifiers can be combined into subgroups of the elements of the array. This active antenna approach involves distributing multiple amplifiers and filters between the apertures of the array, if necessary. The advantages of this active and receive form of active antenna system are briefly described below. With respect to the receiving configuration, by placing the low noise amplifier close to the radiating element, the system noise is reduced by 4. compared to the usual approach where the LNA is integrated in the base station. A reduction of 5 dB and a reduction of 1.5 dB compared to an arrangement where the passive antenna array is integrated with the LNA at the mast or below the antenna system. Since most of the effective noise degradation in antenna systems is the result of losses in feeder cables and power combiners, noise picked up by feeder cables is amplified in conventional systems, but not in the receiving stage of active antenna systems. Obviously, it will never be amplified. Therefore, only an effective noise component smaller than that of the conventional system described above is input to the base station. Similarly, for a transmission configuration, if a low power amplifier is integrated into the radiating element, this low power amplifier would be 4.5 dB (same amplifier) than the normal approach where the power amplifier was integrated into the base station. EIRP over power output). Distributing the amplifiers also improves reliability because the system can be designed to respond well to the failure of one or more receive and transmit amplifiers. Even when many failures occur and the performance of the entire system is degraded, this performance degradation is not worse than when a catastrophe occurs. In the transmission mode, since the signal power is several tens of dB higher than the noise power, the noise of the power supply cable amplified by the amplifier is not so alarming. A major advantage of an active antenna system in transmitting is that it frequently occurs in existing PCN base stations because the power amplifier is located between the antenna element and the feed cable connected to the base station drive amplifier. The loss due to cables and combiners is not present in the amplified signal power. Another advantage of distributing the power amplifier is that the amplifier operates in a reduced heat density environment and reliability is enhanced. The reduction in heat density is different from that in dense, confined areas, such as in the case of a single high power amplifier used in existing PCN base stations, where heat is occupied over the entire area occupied by antenna elements in the array. This is for distribution. Since the effect of the lossy element in the form of system noise or EIRP preceded by a low noise amplifier or preceded by a low power amplifier, respectively, is small, an active antenna nest can exhibit many versatility and a variable attenuator And / or a phase shifter can be placed in the signal path of each antenna element. As is well known in the art, these variable attenuators and phase shifters can operate to provide electron beam shaping and pointing performance. The active antenna system of the present invention can be used in a receiving system that uses spatial or polarization diversity, and is effective without depending on the diversity approach actually used. Thus, all of the advantages of an active antenna apply to all diversity receiving systems. Further, in a polarization divergence reception system, both orthogonal polarizations are utilized, and each polarization component is provided to their filter / LNA network and combiner. FIG. 1 is a configuration diagram of a conventional PCN base station architecture for an antenna system for transmitting and receiving electromagnetic radiation, FIG. 2 is a configuration diagram of an active antenna system architecture of a first embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 3 is a configuration diagram of an active antenna system architecture according to a second embodiment of the present invention. DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to FIG. 1, a system using a conventional PCN base station antenna architecture is shown. FIG. 1 is representative of the current state of the art for PCS antenna systems. However, the following considerations also apply to current cell systems. This system includes a transmitting antenna system 1 and a receiving antenna system 7. The transmitting antenna system 1 has a plurality of radiating antenna elements 5 arranged linearly on a support 3, the distance from the highest element to the lowest element being several meters. The transmitting antenna system 1 has a high power amplifier (HPA) 13 and a filter 15 arranged at a base station 17, and this amplifier / filter is connected to each radiating antenna element via a power combiner 54 and a feed cable 31; The length of the power supply cable 31 generally varies between approximately 15 and 70 meters. As can be seen, the long cable 31 introduces a 2-3 dB loss of power transmitted by the ground-based power amplifier. The receiving antenna system 7 has a plurality of radiating antenna elements 11 arranged on a support 9 in a straight line, the dimensions of which are identical to the transmitting antenna system. The receiving antenna system 7 has a pair of filters 19 and 21, and the filter 19 is coupled to a pair of amplifiers 23 and 25, and the filter 21 is coupled to a pair of amplifiers 27 and 29. Each radiating antenna element 11 is coupled to each of the filters 19 and 21 via power combiners 55 and 56 and provides vertical and horizontal outputs via feed cables 33 and 34. Although this embodiment shows a receiving system using polarization diversity, the same considerations apply to a receiving system using spatial diversity. For clarity, it is assumed that the filter / LNA combination is mounted on the mast as is commonly done in PCS base stations. It is clear that the ohmic loss in the power combiner and the ohmic loss in the short transmission line between the power combiner and the filter / LNA combination contribute to the degradation of the noise figure of the system. Referring to FIG. 2, an active antenna system architecture according to the present invention is shown. This antenna system comprises a single filter 15 and an amplifier 13 for the transmitting part and a filter 19 for the receiving part as shown in FIG. 1 in that all radiating antenna elements 5 and 11 are provided on the same support 35. , 21 and associated amplifiers 23, 25, 27, 29 differ from the antenna system of FIG. 1 in that each radiating antenna element has its own filter and amplifier located as close as possible to the element. This configuration is shown in FIG. 2. In the transmitting section, each antenna element 5 is connected to its own filter 37 and amplifier 39, and the feed cable 41 extends from the base station 43 to each amplifier 39 via the power divider 54. I do. In the receiver, each radiating antenna element 11 has two orthogonally polarized outputs as in FIG. 1, each output having its own filter 45 and amplifier pairs 47 and 49. The outputs of the amplifiers 47 and 49 are combined by power combiners 55 and 56 and supplied to the base station via feed cables 51 and 53 respectively. Here, for the sake of clarity, a receiving system configuration using polarization diversity is shown. However, the claims for active antenna applications apply equally to receiving system configurations that use spatial diversity or other diversity. In a receiving system configuration, the positions of the amplifiers and associated filters can be reversed. That is, amplification can be performed before filtering, and filtering can be performed before amplification. Placing the amplifier in front of the filter reduces the effect of filter loss on system noise, but increases the size of the amplifier stage so that the expected interference passes through the amplifier through the filter with little intermodulation products. It must be designed to have a dynamic range. If a filter is placed in front of the amplifier to provide out-of-band signal rejection before amplifying the in-band signal (FIG. 2), the filter must have low power loss and is preferably implemented with a waveguide. . Referring to FIG. 3, a modification of the architecture of FIG. 2 is shown, in which a variable phase shifter 51 and a variable attenuator 53 are arranged in series with each amplifier and filter combination of FIG. Changing the phase and amplitude provides the ability to electronically tilt and shape the beam within the elevation depending on the traffic pattern and terrain of the serving cell. This elevation beam shaping and switching can be dynamically controlled by a service provider by a remote controller. The second embodiment of the present invention includes only the receiving unit having the above-described structure, and the third embodiment of the present invention includes only the transmitting unit having the above-described structure. Although the present invention has been described with respect to certain preferred embodiments, many modifications and variations will be apparent to practitioners skilled in the art. Accordingly, the claims should be interpreted broadly to include all such changes and modifications in light of the prior art.
