2. Description of the Related Art In a golf club design, a swing weight is generally used as a standard for unifying the ease of swing of each club in a club set. Club length and head weight are determined. In recent years, the head has been increasing in size.To reduce the head weight to the weight determined from the swing weight, the entire head is made of a shell structure using a material with a large specific strength, such as a titanium alloy or a special aluminum alloy. It is common to do. At that time, attempts have been made to reduce the thickness of the shell as much as possible. At present, the thickness of the crown and sides is 0.6 m.
m, and the face receives a direct impact force when hitting the ball, so it must have a thickness of 3 mm or more in terms of strength. A thickness of about 2.5 mm has been empirically employed because of the possibility of receiving a strong impact from foreign matter.

In order to cope with the increase in the size of the head, the weight of the head has been reduced, and the thickness of the crown and sides has already been reduced to 0.6 mm, which is near the limit in strength. The face has been reduced to 2.5 mm by adopting a new material, which has been tried in the market, and is now close to the limit in terms of durability. In addition, recently, rebound based on the deflection of the face There is a possibility that the wall thickness may be selected in order to utilize the force, so the weight reduction is not simple, and the sole is necessary for welding connection with the already thinned side or face as described above. It is necessary to secure the sole thickness, and it is considered impossible to reduce the thickness to the thickness of 2.5 mm or less, and the means for reducing the weight of the head more than the current situation It is actually a pity for It is.

On the other hand, at present, the thickness of a general sole is 2.5 mm as described above, and the sole weight in this case is about 45 g even if the material is a lightweight titanium alloy, and 60 g for stainless steel. With the tendency that parts other than the sole are gradually reduced in thickness, there is a problem that the weight occupied by the sole is gradually increasing and reaches 20 to 30% of the total head weight. . In view of such circumstances, it is an object of the present invention to provide a wood club head having a sole structure that can contribute to weight reduction of the head.

The peripheral part of the sole has a maximum thickness of 2.5 mm
Therefore, it is possible to take a sufficient welding margin when performing welding connection with the side or face of the head, and it is possible to sufficiently secure the bonding strength between the shells when the head is formed as a shell. In addition, the center portion of the sole is made to be as thin as possible to be as durable as possible based on the experimental results (detailed data omitted) of the inventor, which can greatly contribute to weight reduction of the sole. In addition, a large number of convex ribs extending from the front to the rear of the sole throughout the length direction of the sole on the inner side of the sole are integrated with the sole as a thing that reinforces the sole that is extremely thin and thin. Therefore, it is possible to provide strength sufficient to withstand a large impact load when hitting a ball or colliding with the ground while suppressing an increase in the weight of the sole.

In particular, since the above-mentioned convex rib is formed integrally with the sole, there is no joint between the sole and the rib, and reinforcement due to breakage of the joint when repeatedly receiving an impact load as described above. There is no need to worry about troubles such as reduced strength. Also, on the inner side of the sole, an embodiment of the invention described later
As described in, a large number of convex ribs having a small cross-sectional area are evenly installed in the entire length direction of the sole,
There is no weight imbalance due to reinforcement, and the center of gravity of the head can be easily designed.

The center portion of the sole has the smallest thickness (0.
(5 to 0.6 mm) The rectangular plate-shaped rib is provided in the set portion, so that the sole is effectively reinforced. In addition, since the width of the rib is set to about 15 to 20 mm, the sole weight does not need to increase so much (the width of the rib is 15 m).
If it is less than m, the reinforcing effect is too small, and if it exceeds 20 mm, there is a concern that the adverse effect of weight increase may be caused. ). With respect to the thickness of the rib, if it exceeds the above range, there is a concern that the weight increases, and if it is less than the above range, there is a possibility that the reinforcing effect may be unsatisfactory.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS In the present invention, a large number of convex ribs formed on the inner surface of a sole can have an arbitrary cross section such as a rectangular shape, a semicircular shape, and a triangular shape. The height of the convex portion from the inner surface of the sole is preferably set in a range of 1 to 4 mm, and the width thereof is preferably set in a range of 1 to 8 mm. For values below the lower limit of the range,
If the reinforcing effect is not sufficient, and if the value exceeds the upper limit of the above range, there is a concern that the head weight becomes excessive.

Further, it is desirable that the thickness of the sole provided with the protruding ribs is increased in the peripheral portion and thin in the central portion. Particularly, in the peripheral portion of the sole, since it is common to connect the sole and other head members by welding, it is desired to set the thickness to 2.5 mm or more. The thickness of the central portion of the sole is preferably set to 0.5 to 0.6 mm in order to reduce the weight while maintaining the durability of the sole.

Further, in the embodiment, the sole portion of the sole is made of a thin 0.5 mm thick sole plate for weight reduction, and there is a concern about durability. Since the nine (9) convex ribs 6 are formed integrally with the sole 1, the thin sole plate is effectively reinforced, and the above-mentioned concern is eliminated. In order to confirm the durability, the club having the head of the embodiment was left for one month at a golf driving range, which is the facility of the applicant, and a free test was performed. For example, there was no change affecting the durability of each part of the head itself and the welded part of each part, and it was confirmed that the head was sufficiently practical.

Next, according to the CAD design, NC processing using a ball end mill having a diameter of 3 mm is performed to maintain the thickness of the peripheral portion of the sole plate at 2.5 mm, and then to the central portion 7 of the sole 1. The height of the sole plate extends from the front to the rear of the sole 1 at the center in the longitudinal direction from the toe 4 side to the heel 5 side of the sole plate. One convex rib 8 having a rectangular cross section with a width of 9 mm and a width of 19 mm is formed integrally with the sole 1.
The size of the one convex rib 8 is 1-5 m in height.
It is desirable to set m and the width in the range of 15 to 20 mm. When the value is less than the above range, there is a concern that the reinforcing effect is insufficient. When the value exceeds the above range, the weight of the sole 1 may increase excessively.

The golf club head according to the present invention has a curved plate shape in which the peripheral portion has a maximum thickness of approximately 2.5 mm and the central portion has a minimum thickness of 0.5 to 0.6 mm. As the sole inner surface, from the front to the rear of the sole inner surface, a large number of convex ribs are provided integrally with the sole over the entire length direction of the sole, or one large rectangular rib is formed in the longitudinal direction of the sole. Since the sole is formed integrally with the sole substantially at the center, the weight of the sole can be significantly reduced, and the durability of the head, especially the sole, can be maintained at a level at which there is no practical problem.
