First, a series of test patterns are written on a recording medium in different write patterns for each test pattern. When reading these test patterns, the degree of modulation of each read signal is determined. The degree of modulation as a function of write power is curve fitted to an analytical function. A normalized derivative of this function is analytically determined, and the optimized write power for the medium is determined using the normalized derivative.

Field of the Invention The present invention relates to an optical recording apparatus for writing information on an optical recording medium by using a radiation beam, and more particularly, to a method for writing a series of test patterns on a recording medium. A first step of writing at different write power levels for each pattern, a second step of reading these patterns to form corresponding read signals, a third step of extracting read parameter values from each read signal, and reading. A fourth step of curve approximating the value of the parameter to a function defining the relationship between the write power level and the read parameter. The present invention further comprises a radiation source for generating a radiation beam having a controllable write power level, a control unit for writing a series of test patterns at different write power levels for each pattern, and reading these patterns; A read unit for forming a corresponding read signal, a first processor for extracting a value of the read parameter from each read signal, and a second processor that approximates the value of the read parameter to a function defining a relationship between the write power level and the read parameter. The present invention relates to an optical recording device for writing information on an optical recording medium having two processors. Processors may be of the analog or digital type, and include both programmable and fixed program processors. The processor may comprise memory means in addition to the arithmetic unit. The recording method described at the outset is known from US Pat. No. 5,185,733. In this method, a series of test patterns is written on a recording medium at a sequentially increased write power level. After reading the written patterns, a second order polynomial is applied to the amplitude of the read signal of each pattern as a function of the write power level by a curve fitting (curve approximation) algorithm. The write power corresponding to the maximum value of the polynomial is selected as the optimum write power for recording the next information on the medium. The problem of noise characteristics of the read signal is alleviated by curve fitting. The disadvantage of this known method is that the optimum power level determined by this method does not fully take into account changes in the characteristics of the recording device and in the characteristics of the recording medium. Thus, use of this optimum write power can result in unreliable information recording on the recording medium. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a highly reliable method for setting an optimum write power without being largely affected by noise, depending on a read signal from a test pattern written on a recording medium. To this end, the method according to the invention determines the derivative of said function and normalizes said derivative by multiplying said derivative by a factor equal to the value of the write power / the value of the read parameter. A fifth step and a sixth step of selecting an optimum write power level depending on a normalized derivative of the function. The value of the normalized derivative as a function of the writing power is hardly affected by changes in the parameters of the recording device and the recording medium. The changes in the device may relate to the distribution of the radiation energy in the cross section of the radiation beam used for recording, the power calibration of the radiation source. Changes in the recording medium may relate to changes in write sensitivity or reflectivity at the surface of the medium or these changes between media. If the optimum write power level is selected depending on the normalized derivative, the selected value is suitable for reliable recording on various recording media by various recording devices. This optimum write power level can be selected by extracting the power level corresponding to the preset value of the normalized derivative. In another example of the method of the invention, the optimum write power level is selected depending on a predetermined value of a derivative of said function normalized by a factor equal to the value of the write power / the value of the read parameter. The method is characterized by comprising a fifth step. In order to achieve a stable curve approximation procedure (curve fitting procedure), the function to be fitted is preferably determined by orthogonal polynomial terms. In this case, the value of the coefficient for one polynomial determined by this procedure does not depend on the value of the coefficient determined for the other polynomial. These polynomials are preferably Legendre polynomials. The reason is that these polynomials require relatively little computational power in the curve fitting procedure due to their mathematical simplicity. The read parameter is preferably the amplitude of the read signal obtained from the medium. This is because this amplitude can be easily obtained from a radiation detection system that intercepts radiation coming from the medium. Furthermore, this amplitude is a satisfactory parameter for determining the quality of the recorded signal. The process of selecting the optimum write power can be purified by reading the parameter value from the medium and using this value to select the value of the write parameter. The value of this parameter may be specific to a particular medium recorded on a particular medium. This parameter allows the selection process to be adapted to the characteristics of the medium being scanned. This parameter can be an initial value or range for the optimal write power level, which can reduce the range of test pattern write power levels. This parameter is a preset value of the normalized derivative, so that the optimum writing power can also be selected depending on the characteristics of the medium. In contrast, preset values fixed by the device do not allow such a selection. Preferably, the analog signal is converted to a digital signal by an analog-to-digital converter before performing calculations on the signal values. The derivative can be determined by taking the difference value of the fitted function. In this case, the value of the function must be represented by a relatively large number of significant digits, and the calculations are also performed over this number of digits so that they are not affected by the additional noise introduced by this method of determining the derivative. There is a need to. The derivative of said function is preferably determined analytically. The reason is that such a decision introduces little additional noise. In this case, the number of effective digits can be reduced, so that the required computing power of the second processor can be reduced and the quality of the analog-to-digital converter can be reduced. Generally, the write power level of the test pattern is selected within a range surrounding the predicted value of the optimum write power level. However, the optimum write power level is often close to the maximum power that the radiation source can generate. In this case, the range is limited by the maximum laser power. This problem can be avoided by selecting a power level from the derivative of the function and then determining the optimal power level by multiplying this power level by a constant greater than one. In this case, the test pattern can be written in a range farther from the maximum laser power. This has the advantage that the measurements are taken in a power range that is far from the saturation value of the function and its derivatives, and that the determination of the function and its derivatives is more accurate. Another feature of the present invention is an apparatus for writing information on an optical recording medium. The present invention provides the optical recording apparatus, wherein the second processor derives a derivative of the function and multiplies the derivative by a coefficient equal to a ratio of a value of a write power to a value of a read parameter. It is characterized in that it is arranged to normalize the function and to select the value of the optimum write power level depending on the normalized derivative. The objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of preferred embodiments of the invention, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The recording layer can be, for example, of the magneto-optical type, of the phase change type, of the dye type, or of any other suitable material. Information can be recorded on the recording layer 3 in the form of an optically detectable area (also referred to as a mark). The device comprises a radiation source 4 for generating a radiation beam 5, for example a semiconductor laser. The radiation beam is converged on the recording layer 3 via the beam splitter 6, the objective lens 7, and the substrate 2. The recording medium may be of an air incident type in which the radiation beam directly enters the recording layer 3 without passing through the substrate. The radiation reflected from the recording medium 1 is converged by an objective lens 7 and enters a detector 8 after passing through a beam splitter 6, which converts the incident radiation into an electrical detection signal. The detection signal is input to the circuit 9. This circuit 9 extracts some signals from the detection signal, such as a read signal S R representing information read from the medium 1. The radiation source 4, the beam splitter 6, the objective lens 7, the detector 8 and the circuit 9 together constitute a reading unit 10. The read signal from the circuit 9 is processed by the first processor 10, and a signal representing a read parameter required for controlling the laser power level is extracted from the read signal. The retrieved signal is supplied to a second processor 11, which processes a series of values of the read parameter and retrieves an optimal value of the write power control signal based on these values. The write power control signal is supplied to the control unit 12. An information signal 13 representing information to be written on the medium 1 is also supplied to the control unit 12. The output of the control unit 12 is connected to the radiation source 4. The mark on the recording layer 3 can be written with a single radiant power having a power determined by the optimum write power level determined by the processor 11. The mark can also be written by a series of radiation pulses having equal or different lengths and power determined by the optimum write power level. The actual radiation power emitted by the radiation source 4 is measured by a detector (not shown) arranged in the unused side lobes of the radiation beam or in the radiation reflected outside the optical path of the radiation beam. can do. The signal of this detector can be supplied directly to the processor 11. Alternatively, the signal can be supplied to the connection unit 12, where it is combined with the peak amplitude of the read signal, which is a measure of the radiation power received at the recording layer 3, and then supplied to the processor 11. Before writing information to the medium 1, the apparatus performs the following procedure to set its write power to an optimum value. First, the apparatus writes a series of test patterns on the medium 1. The test pattern must be selected to provide the desired read signal. If the read parameter to be extracted from the read signal is the maximum modulation of the read signal, the test pattern must include a mark long enough to achieve the maximum modulation of the read signal. When the information is coded according to the so-called EFM modulation, the test patterns preferably intended to include long I 11 mark. Each test pattern is recorded with a different write power. The next pattern can be written with a gradually increasing write power under the control of the processor 11. These patterns can be written anywhere on the media. These patterns can also be written in specially provided test areas on the medium. FIG. 2 shows read signals 18 and 19 obtained from two patterns written at two different write power levels. These patterns include short marks, long marks and short marks, as indicated by the signal portions 15, 16 and 17 of both read signals 18 and 19. The actual pattern can include hundreds of marks of different or equal lengths. The processor 10 retrieves the read parameter to be used for the detection of the optimum write power from the read signal S R. One possible read parameter is the ratio of the lowest amplitude value 'a' to the highest amplitude value 'b' of the signal portion of the read signal shown in FIG. The preferred read parameter is the normalized modulation depth, which is the ratio between the maximum peak-to-peak value 'c' of the read signal and the maximum value 'b' of the read signal. After reading the test pattern on the medium 1, the processor 11 can obtain a series of value pairs for the modulation depth of the pattern and the write power belonging to the pattern. These write powers can be derived from the value of the write power control signal during the recording of the test pattern, or can be obtained by measuring the radiation power. FIG. 3 schematically shows the result of the reading, and x is a measurement of the modulation depth m as a function of the writing power P. Processor 11 fits the curve to the modulation depth measurement to obtain an analytical expression that describes the change in modulation depth as a function of write power. This curve is shown by the broken line in FIG. Curve fitting can be performed by a known least squares fitting algorithm. In the next step, the processor 11 analytically calculates the normalized derivative 'g' for the write power of the modulation factor. The normalized derivative g (P) is equal to the function (dm / dP) (P / m). A function g derived from the fitted modulation degree curve in FIG. 3 is shown by a solid curve. The processor 11 extracts the intermediate write power P i from the normalized derivative by taking the value of the write power P belonging to the preset value g 0 , as shown by the broken line in FIG. The value of g o can be stored in the memory of the set and device by the manufacturer of the recording apparatus value, or be an optimum writing power setting process stored value in the medium before or during processing it can. In the next step, the value of the intermediate power P i is multiplied by a constant h greater than 1 to obtain the optimum write power level P 0 . The values of the preset value g 0 and the multiplication constant h are determined by the manufacturer of the medium or by the user during the initialization of the medium. The value of g 0 is set in the range of 0.2 to 5.0 . For values greater than 5.0, the prediction of the value of the normalized derivative will be inaccurate. The reason is that the approximation of the asymptote will place the value of P for g 0 close on the write power axis. For values of g 0 less than or equal to 0.2, the normalized derivative has a small slope and small errors in the value of the derivative result in a large spread of the values of P i associated with g 0 . As a result of experiments on the rewritable recording medium having a CD format, g 0 value in the range of 0.2 to 2.0 is obtained, the high-density medium in the range of 2.0 to 4.0 A g 0 value was obtained. The multiplication constant h is preferably set in the range of 1.00 to 1.35. The optimum write power P 0 equal to (hP i ) is generally set to a value close to the write power at which the modulation factor m starts to saturate. In a preferred method of setting g 0 and h, the optimum write power for a particular medium is determined by finding the write power that minimizes the jitter of the read signal of the information written on this medium. Preferably, the information is random information. Next, a normalized derivative (dm / dP) (P / m) is determined from the series of test patterns written as described above. The value of P i, the value of the associated g 0 is chosen to be within the scope not too flat within the above range, i.e. with normal influencing for good function is only steep. The associated values of h (= P 0 / P i ) and g 0 thus set can be used for all media and all recording devices of this type. The value of the normalized derivative is hardly affected by changes in the parameters of the recording device and the recording medium. If the optimum writing power level is selected depending on the normalized derivative, the selected level is suitable for reliable recording on various recording media by various recording devices. This level can be selected by taking a power level corresponding to a preset value of the normalized derivative. The advantage of using a normalized derivative can also be achieved without curve fitting. In this case, the derivative can be determined from the read parameter versus the write power level, for example, by calculating the difference between the measurements. However, omitting the curve-fitting step increases the noise in the derivative value, and makes it impossible to use the derivative to set the optimum write power for some media. The values of g 0 and h can be stored on the device, thereby providing a media independent parameter value. However, it is preferred that the value of g 0 be stored on the medium to provide a media dependent value. FIG. 4 shows an optically readable recording medium 1 provided with a track 30. The tracks can be spirals, for example in the form of embossed grooves or ridges. The recording area of the medium is divided into an information recording area 31 for writing user information and a control area 32 for storing information related to writing, reading and erasing of information on the medium and which is not generally scheduled to record user information. You. In some types of media, the information in the control area is embossed. The control area 32 is indicated by a dashed track 32 in the figure. The information recording area 31 is of a type that undergoes a change in optically detectable characteristics when exposed to radiation above a specific write power level. The value of g 0 can be stored as a control information pattern in the control area 32 of the medium. When embossing the control area, the media manufacturer needs to record this value. Alternatively, the user can record the value during initialization of the medium on the medium, for example, and enable recording of the disc specific value. The value of h can be recorded in the same way as the value of g 0 . FIG. 5 is an enlarged view showing a part of the track 32 having the pattern of the mark 33. The curve to be fitted to the value pair (m, P) can be one or more polynomials, preferably orthogonal polynomials. In this case, this curve is: Can be written as Here, f ′ (P) is a derivative of the function f with respect to the parameter P. The normalized derivative is analytically given by: The value of P i can be found from the following equation. Depending on the choice of the curve to be fitted, the value of P i can be found in the form of an analytical expression, or as a result of a numerical successive root approximation method such as the method of regula falsi or Newton. it can. The use of analytic expressions always provides the correct roots where possible, but successive approximations can be undesirable roots. If the analytic expression of equation (3) can be found, it is not necessary to determine the normalized derivative g further, and the preset value g 0 can be inserted directly into equation (3) and the associated Pi Can be determined. A suitable orthogonal polynomial is the Legendre polynomial. The three lowest order Legendre polynomials are: Since these polynomials are defined in the interval -1 <P <+1, the write power value to be applied is Need to be scaled according to In this, if it is necessary to use a write power level P s scaled in equation (4). It is necessary to perform scaling to return the value of P i found from equation (3) to the ranges P min and P max . When a digital processor is used, the input values of m and P need to be converted from analog values to digital values by an analog-to-digital converter. The number of bits in the digital output value can correspond to the noise in the measured value. For example, if the noise in the value of the parameter is 1% of the maximum value of the parameter, the converter will make it more than 8 bits and only introduce 1/2 8 = 1/256 additional quantization noise. There is a need. If, for cost reasons, the processor 11 performing the above calculations is a small processor, these calculations are preferably performed in integer format. Therefore, the values of m and P need to be converted from actual values to integer values. The multiplication constant for this transformation needs to be large enough not to introduce additional noise and small enough not to require a great deal of computing power. This constant should be chosen such that the noise present at the value of m or P, determined in the integer representation of the value, is slightly greater than the value corresponding to the least significant bit of the integer representation. The value noise includes the quantization noise described above. For example, when the noise of the value of m is 0.5% of the maximum value of m, a multiplication coefficient of a value obtained by dividing about 1000 by the maximum value of the parameter is appropriate. Instead of using a series of polynomials to fit the values of m and P, a single function can be used. This function has an asymptote for large values of P, and must have zero values for non-fixed values of P> 0 and derivatives of this function for values of P for which this function is zero. is there. A suitable function is It is. The normalized derivative can be given in the form of an analytical expression. Equation (4) is reduced to one quadratic equation, and the root can be found without using successive approximation. Other suitable functions are arctangent and hyperbolic tangent: It is. The arc tangent and hyperbolic tangent values can be stored in a look-up table to speed up the calculation.
