Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a golf club head, of which the head body exclusive of a face is formed of a titanium alloy and which has a head made of a large-sized metal, is excellent in a hitting feel and is capable of increasing a carry, by forming the face of a thin maraging steel. SOLUTION: The head body 2 of the driver wood club head 1 is formed of the titanium alloy over the entire part inclusive of a hose 3 to be mounted with a shaft to a hollow shell structure. The volume thereof is set at >=250 cc. The sheet-like face 5 consisting of the stainless steel-maraging steel set at 2 to 3 mm in thickness is fixed by a press-fitting-caulking method into an aperture 4 disposed in front of the head body 2. An extremely fine groove 6 is worked at the peripheral end of the face 5 and the outer walls of this extremely fine groove 6 are crushed simultaneously with press-fitting of the face 5 into this aperture 4, by which the face 5 is fixed. As a result, the fixation of 2, 4 having high hardness to each other is surely executed and the appearance of the joined portions is improved.

2. Description of the Related Art Recent wood type golf clubs are:
In pursuit of an increased flight distance of a hit ball, a metal head with a long shaft is becoming mainstream. At this time, the head volume must be increased without significantly increasing the weight of the head in order to make the club easy for a general golfer to swing, so the metal head body has a hollow shell structure. The material is selected as light as possible. Further, attempts have been made to increase the flight distance by increasing the repulsive force of the hit ball, and recently, the face has been deformed appropriately, even if minutely, at the time of the hit ball, and the restoring force of this deformation and the energy loss of the hit ball ( Hysteresis loss)
It has been proposed to take advantage of the reduction effect and the like.

From such a background,
In order to make the head body as light as possible, it is made of a (2.7) aluminum alloy having a small specific gravity, and the face has high toughness (high elongation and ductility) in anticipation of the effect of the deformation. Wood club heads using high-strength, high-strength maraging steel have been tried, but the impact at the time of hitting is absorbed and modulated by the aluminum alloy, making the hit feeling (including hitting sound) unreliable. There was a problem that it was easy to receive.

As shown in FIG. 2, an extremely fine groove 6 is formed on the peripheral end of the face 5 over the entire circumference, and the face 5 is pressed into the opening 4 of the head main body 2 at the same time. The outer wall 6A of the ultrafine groove 6 is collapsed, and the face 5 is fixed. It is possible to caulk such an ultra-fine groove 6 by the benefit of stainless steel-maraging steel of super tough steel,
The aesthetic appearance of the joined part where the "hardness" between the high hardness objects (titanium alloy and maraging steel) is securely achieved is also improved.

FIG. 3 is a sectional view of an iron club head (5 iron, # 5) according to a second embodiment of the present invention. The head body 12 is made of an oversized or large titanium alloy with a face length from the shaft axis to the tip of the toe of 85 mm. The face length of the conventional normal product is about 75 mm. The face 15 is made of the stainless steel-maraging steel having a thickness of 2.0 mm, and is fixed to the head main body 12 by the same press-fitting and caulking method as in the first embodiment. In the figure, reference numeral 13 denotes a hosel. The face 15 is press-fitted into the opening 14 and the location of the ultrafine groove 16 is caulked.

[0012] Maraging steel is
A super-strength steel obtained by aging precipitation of martensite to which ultra-low carbon and a large amount of nickel, cobalt, etc. are added. For example, the standard composition of 18Ni, a maraging steel of Inco, is shown in Table 2 below. . In addition to those having the compositions shown in Table 1, maraging steels shown in Table 2 can also be used.

In the wood type golf club head according to the present invention, the head body is made of a titanium alloy having a higher hardness than the specific gravity (about 4.5). The volume of the head can easily be set to 250 cc or more. In addition,
The head volume with a driver wood of 44 inches or more, which is a proven length due to the increased flight distance, requires at least 250 cc because of the need to expand the sweet area. Conversely 2
If it is less than 50 cc, the number of missed shots increased due to the influence of the sweet area being too small and long. Further, since the head body has a high hardness (H R C = 30) titanium alloys, with the strong feeling positive when hit obtained, hardly enters trauma. Note that, in both the wood and the iron, the face of the golf club head according to the present invention is made of super-strong maraging steel which is excellent in toughness, so that the concave deflection of the face when hitting the ball is increased. Even in the case, without causing plastic deformation,
Sufficient spring characteristics (trampoline effect) are generated and a strong restoring force is exerted, so that the ball can be hit further. Moreover, maraging steel has a high hardness (18
Ni, aging after H R C = 50~52, stainless steel and titanium can contribute to H R C = 30) also distance increase of the ball from the coefficient of restitution is greater this point of hitting.

According to a second aspect of the present invention, the thickness of the face of each of the wood and the iron is set to be thinner than that of the existing club head, and the size of the head is increased to increase the area of the face. Thereby, the trampoline effect of the face at the time of hitting is likely to occur, and the flight distance of the hitting ball can be increased. In the case of wood and iron, if the thickness of the face exceeds the upper limit, the trampoline effect is significantly reduced. On the other hand, if the value is less than the lower limit, the concave deflection of the face becomes excessive at the time of hitting, and the directionality of the hit ball deteriorates.
