DESCRIZIONE del modello di utilità dal titolo: “Sistema per la generazione di un moti di swirl per DESCRIPTION of the utility model entitled: “System for the generation of a swirl motion for
motori alternativi dotati di due iniettori per cilindro” reciprocating engines equipped with two injectors per cylinder "
CAMPO DEL MODELLO DI UTILITÀ’ FIELD OF THE UTILITY MODEL
The problem of the present invention is to achieve an improvement in the air charge and at the same time to guarantee a swirl motion controlled thereto in internal combustion engines with supercharged or aspirated pistons equipped with double high pressure injection.
The present invention relates to the management of the inlet air for a supercharged or aspirated internal combustion engine by means of two swirl generators obtained by means of a particular design of the manifolds of the two intake valves. The invention relates to the operation of a supercharged or aspirated internal combustion engine, in which the air currents are controlled by means of two spiral vortex generators obtained on the valve ducts or externally thereto. The system generates two counter-current vortices centered on the axis of the injectors. A possible adjustment system of the vortex generators simultaneously controls the intensity, the characteristics of the vortex and the air flow to the motor.

These systems require a swirl generation system that generates two vortices around the individual injectors to optimize combustion.
In piston internal combustion engines, the motion fields created by the intake manifolds and the geometry of the injectors and the combustion chamber are aimed at obtaining suitable mixing strategies between reactants and between combustion products and fresh products. The combustion process is carried out and stabilized inside the chamber. Combustion efficiency is optimized, especially pollutants.
In particular, the aerodynamics of the flame geometry is optimized and therefore the location of the heat release.
In the choice of an aerodynamic field in terms of vortices, in particular of swirl, the main objective is the stabilization of the combustion and the completeness of the same. Axial, radial and jet swirl generators have been patented in piston engines.
These can be made by means of vanes, but more generally it is preferred to suitably shape the intake ducts inside the engine head. This optimization, the subject of much research activity, is widely documented in numerous patents such as US2921571, US3273551, US4015577, US4095578, US4428334 and US662079.
In particular, but not exclusively, the advanced combustion systems of the diesel engine require a filling mass of air as large and cold as possible. Furthermore, in order to sustain combustion through the motion of the charge itself, it is achieved through a vortex coaxial with the injector (swirl). The traditional goal when designing the intake and exhaust geometry is to achieve the lowest possible flow losses and ensure a defined and stable charged motion. However, the ratio of the resulting vortex angular velocity is approximately proportional to the average piston velocity. For this, especially at low engine speeds, additional measures are taken. In the automotive field, an angular swirl speed and an adequate air charge at low engine speeds are required. For this reason the entrance lights layout is designed to increase turbulence especially at low speeds.
Questi grandi vortici caratterizzano i flussi d'aria all inteno del cilindro. During the suction phase, when the piston moves downward, the incoming air passes through the inlet ports. In this phase the swirl motion is given to the fluid. These large eddies characterize the air flows inside the cylinder. Depending on the geometry of the inlet and outlet ducts, high-energy eddies are still present in the cylinder even when the valves are closed. Unlike small-scale eddies, these eddies survive long enough to affect combustion and post-oxidation. However, the friction against the walls and the air flow slowly dissipates the energy of these vortices as well.
The door design must then obtain maximum flow in the intake and exhaust ports and an adequate charge movement even at varying loads. On the one hand, the design of the ducts is limited due to design constraints, such as the height of the cylinder head, the space required for the injectors and the cooling system. On the other hand, an adequate strength of the head is also required. The numerous patents already cited try to obtain the result by means of spiral ducts and approximately rectangular section. The presence of fins inside the ducts, grids or internal conveyors, in theory improves the compromise between filling and swirl. In practice, the effectiveness of the internal fins is very limited. The valve ducts inside the cylinder head usually belong to three groups: tangential ports, helical ports and filling. Tangential valve ducts are designed to convey the air tangentially at a relatively flat angle into the combustion chamber and thus generate a charge motion around the vertical axis of the cylinder, where the injector is usually located. The tangential valve ducts generate high turbulence with moderate flow, therefore with limited air mass flow. Helical or spiral ducts are more common and their geometry forces a portion of the main airflow to rotate around the valve stem to achieve the desired swirl vortex. For a two inlet valve arrangement, it is common to combine a helical inlet duct with a fill duct. This duct has the primary objective of minimizing the passage resistance and optimizing the filling of the cylinder, the mass flow of air and the volumetric efficiency. For this purpose, the filling duct has the largest possible section. To optimize the tangential speed or swirl speed at low rpm, with low piston speeds it is necessary to close or partialize the filling port with flaps or gate valves. These devices are expensive and proved unreliable, especially when their movement is continuously controlled by the variation of the angular velocity of the motor. Also the use of chamfers on the valve seats allows to obtain swirl motions at low valve opening values. The real problem, in fact, is to obtain stable and energetic vortices at low speed with high loads. Under these conditions the relatively low combustion rate limits the fuel load.

DESCRIZIONE DETTAGLIATA DEL MODELLO DI UTILITÀ’ DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE UTILITY MODEL
The concept introduced by the present invention is optimized to meet these needs and constraints. This results in a swirling motion around the individual injectors. This objective can be achieved through the design of particular geometries for the intake ducts, or obtained with a vortex generator external to the head. These vortex generators are characterized by spiral valve ducts or by external volutes or spirals. Therefore the geometry of the intake ducts is optimized to obtain two counter-rotating vortices. This solution allows to reduce friction losses by reducing the amount of energy necessary for the generation of the vortices themselves. The combustion of the jets of the individual injectors will be optimized with a reduction in consumption and emissions. Burning speed will also benefit. To facilitate an increase in turbulence at low speed of the piston with this configuration, it is sufficient to appropriately size the vortex generator.
With reference now to figures 1 to 2, two particular embodiments of the present invention are illustrated, purely by way of example.
Figure 1 shows a vortex generation system by means of two spiral ducts on two intake valves, made of metallic material, for example preferably but not limitedly, of cast iron, steel, aluminum, titanium, etc. The two vortices generated stabilize each other by reducing friction losses, by means of fusion, preferably but not limitedly. The two engine intake ducts have the classic spiral shape. The inlet section, in this case square to increase the vorticity, is rotated around the axis of the duct and is transformed into a circular one near the outlet in the cylinder. This geometry of the duct forms a vortex of "swirl" necessary for combustion. The two twin ducts and symmetrical with respect to a plane passing through the cylinder axis, generate two counter-rotating symmetrical vortices which, thanks to the tangency of the velocity vectors in the cylinder, stabilize each other, managing to arrive minimally damped up to the injection of the fuel, which takes place through two injectors positioned at the center of the respective vortices. The result is extremely efficient and rapid combustion of the fuel as it is fed. Figure 2 schematically illustrates a second embodiment of the present invention by means of a single cylinder with a head 5 and a cylinder 6. In this particular configuration, the manifolds 2 and 4 are connected to two intake valves. The arrangement of the vortex generators is exemplary. The direction of rotation of the vortices is obtained by positioning the mouth of the volutes, while the intensity of the vortex depends on the geometry and dimensions of the volute itself. The fill coefficient can be changed by varying the geometry of the vortex generator. In this case the valve ducts are designed for maximum filling only. It is possible to dynamically change the intensity of the vortex during engine operation by means of devices similar to those already in use in variable geometry centripetal turbines. It is possible to create volutes with variable geometry to optimize the vortex and the flow rate at the various rotation speeds and at different loads.
