Abstract
A blood collection device is described. The device includes a pointed needle, one end of which is intended to puncture the vessel from which blood is to be drawn while the other end of the needle is intended to puncture the septum of a VACUTAINER model blood collection tube. The pointed needle is enclosed within a steel cannula. The needle is elastically pushed by means of a helical spring so that, in a first equilibrium position, the tip of the needle remains within the steel cannula. The pointed needle can be pushed out of the steel cannula to a second position. The vessel from which blood is to be extracted is pierced by the pointed end of the needle when the needle is in the second position. After the needle has been introduced into the vessel, the spring returns the needle tip to the first equilibrium position so that the needle is shielded.

Con questa accresciuta preoccupazione si è verificato un maggiore desiderio di dispositivi che schermino gli aghi utilizzati per il prelievo di sangue. blood collection devices may be implicated in the proliferation of such diseases. With this heightened concern there has been a greater desire for devices that shield needles used for blood sampling.
SOMMARIO DELL’INVENZIONE SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention consists of a blood sampling device for drawing blood from patients in a medical setting. The device has a needle designed to penetrate the vessel from which blood is to be drawn. The needle has a proximal end, a pointed distal end and a lumen that extends between the two ends. The needle is attached to a needle sleeve. A cannula is accurately inserted axially over the needle and has a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen that extends between the two ends. An elastic medium (preferably a helical spring) generates an elastic thrust force thus pushing the cannula with respect to the needle. Due to the elastic thrust of the elastic means, the cannula is normally in a first position where the pointed distal end of the needle is shielded by the cannula. The cannula is pushed against the elastic force in a second position in which the pointed distal end of the needle protrudes from the distal end of the cannula.
The vessel can be pierced with the needle when the cannula is in this second position. The needle is connected to a blood collection vessel.

DESCRIZIONE DETTAGLIATA DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The invention is described with reference to a preferred embodiment comprising a device 10 for drawing blood. A blood tube holder 12 is a generally cylindrical tube having an open proximal end 14 and a distal end 16. The distal end 16 consists of a wall 18 provided with a central opening 20. Around the central opening 20 on the distal side of the wall 18 there is a collar 22 having an internal thread.
In posizione prossimale rispetto all’estremità distale 36 vi è una estremità prossimale appuntita 38. Although the needle 26 has a unitary structure, it can be conceptually divided into two parts, a part 28 for drilling the vessel and a part 30 for drilling the septum. The piercing part 28 of the vessel has a proximal end 32 and a sharp pointed end 34. Integral with the proximal end 32 there is a distal end 36 of the piercing part 30 of the septum. In a proximal position with respect to the distal end 36 there is a pointed proximal end 38. Between the drilling parts of the vessel and the
La struttura descritta è ben nota nella tecnica ed è venduta dalla Becton Dickinson and Company di Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, Stati Uniti d’America, come contenitore a tubo per il prelievo di sangue "Vacutainer Brand”. septum 28 and 30 there is a threaded sleeve 40 to which the needle 26 is attached. The sleeve 40 can be selectively placed in or extracted from the blood tube holder 12 by unscrewing the sleeve 40 from the collar 22. The piercing portion 30 of the septum is covered by a rubber sheath 42 which protects the proximal tip 38. The described structure is well known in the art and is sold by Becton Dickinson and Company of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, USA, as a tube container for "Vacutainer Brand" blood sampling.
A cannula group 44 consists of a cylindrical steel cannula 46 having a proximal end 48, a distal end 50 and a lumen 52 that extends between them. A cannula sleeve 54 is attached to the proximal end 48. The cannula sleeve 54 is a generally cylindrical tube 56 having an inner lumen 58 and a distal wall 68. A finger plate extends radially from the outer surface 60 of the tube 56. 62. An elastic helical spring 64 is disposed within the lumen 58.
When the device 10 is mounted, the needle 28 is axially disposed within the lumen 52 of the cannula 46 so that the piercing portion 28 of the vessel fits precisely within the lumen 52. The spring 54 is arranged concentrically around the the piercing portion 28 of the vessel within the lumen 58 of the tube 56. The sleeve 40 is disposed at least partially within the lumen 58.
Spring 64 abuts against sleeve 40 and distal wall 68 of cannula sleeve 54. Spring 64 is biased to exert an elastic biasing force which tends to push cannula sleeve 54 in the distal direction. Thus in a first position, as shown in Figure 2, the cannula 46 tends to cover the sharp pointed end 34 of the piercing part 28 of the vessel. By pulling the tab 62 in the proximal direction, against the elastic biasing force of the spring 64, the cannula 46 is pulled back, exposing the sharp pointed end 34 to a second position illustrated in Figure 3. Due to the elastic biasing force of the spring 64, the sharp pointed end 34 is normally (i.e. in the first position) shielded by the cannula 46. The sharp pointed end 34 protrudes from the cannula 46 (in the second position) only when the user pushes the cannula assembly 44 or the of needle against the elastic thrust of the spring 64.
The device is used as follows. Before use, the cannula group 44 is in a first position in which the cannula 46 covers the pointed end 34. The elastic thrust force exerted by the spring 64 tends to keep the cannula group 44 in the first position. In order to puncture a vein, the user grasps the blood tube holder in the palm of the hand with the index finger in contact with the finger plate 62. With the index finger the user pulls the finger plate 62 into the proximal direction with a motion similar to that required to pull the trigger on a gun. The force thus exerted on the finger plate 62 pushes the cannula sleeve 54 against the elastic thrust of the spring 64, thereby pushing the cannula assembly 44 in the proximal direction and exposing the tip 34 of the piercing member of the vessel 28. Therein second position, the tip 34 protrudes from the distal end of the cannula 46. The tip 34 can now be inserted into the blood vessel.
Una provetta di prelievo di sangue When the tip 34 has been inserted into the blood vessel, the force on the finger plate 62 is released, thereby allowing the cannula assembly to return in the proximal direction and back to the first position. A blood collection tube
The pointed proximal end 38 pierces the septum. Due to the fact that the blood collection tube is under vacuum, the blood will be aspirated through the lumen of the needle 26 and enters the blood collection tube. If the device moves during blood sampling, the pointed end 34 will not damage the blood vessel due to the fact that it is shielded by the cannula 46.
