Description
Titolo: Dispositivo per la generazione di segnali elettrici a partire da combustibili gassosi Title: Device for the generation of electrical signals starting from gaseous fuels
CAMPO DELL’INVENZIONE FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention refers to a device powered by combustible gas and capable of producing electrical signals, to be used within meters enabled for the automatic transmission of related data.
STATO DELLA TECNICA STATE OF THE TECHNIQUE
The gas distributed to users, domestic and non, must be measured to allow the correct billing of consumption to the customer; the taxes to be paid to the tax authorities are also calculated on the basis of what is measured.
The meters currently used are based on traditional and highly tested mechanical technologies. Throughout the world, deformable wall meters, also known as diaphragm meters, are used to measure the typical consumption of domestic users. The patent for the first model of a counter with deformable walls was filed in 1816 by Clegg and Malam. On the basis of these liquid meters in the mid-19th century (1844, Rìchards and Croll) the dry meters that we still use today were developed. In fact, without substantial innovations, except for the natural modernization of the materials and production techniques used, this instrument is still produced today in millions of copies.
It is an instrument that measures the volumes of gas through the alternating filling and emptying of two half-chambers, of known volume, divided within them by an elastic diaphragm, once produced with organic material (animal skin) and only by less than twenty years with synthetic membranes. This alternating movement, through simple wheels and crank mechanisms, is transmitted to a clock, which indicates the quantity of gas measured. The energy necessary for its operation is obtained from the pressure of the gas that passes through the instrument. It should be borne in mind that normal distribution pressure oscillates between 180 Pa and 200 Pa, and that / if-maximum pressure absorption of the meter allowed by the standards is less than 20 There is no form of external power supply, and no access
o elettronico. The measurement accuracy is approximate, as it cannot take into account parameters that greatly influence the real quantity of energy supplied to the consumer; the pressure, temperature and composition of the measured gas. International metrology accepts measurement errors of ± 3% on the minimum flow rates and ± 2% on the remaining flow range. After commissioning, many standards accept a double error value.
As represented by the table below, extracted from the technical report prepared by the Authority for Electricity and Gas, in support of Resolution ARG / gas no. 155/08, over 95% of the gas meters operating in Italy are in the consumption range below 5000 Smc / year; the meter normally used for this band is the G4, thus classified according to European standards, which allows the measurement of a maximum flow rate of 6 Smc / hour of gas.
Inevitabilmente dovranno From this table it can also be seen that about half of the installed meters are old, that is, built over twenty-five years ago, with outdated materials and technologies. These are tools that will have to be replaced over the next few years, with a new technological generation of meters equipped with "intelligent" functions and bi-directional communication capabilities. Inevitably they will have to
Ma l’attuale tecnologia puramente meccanica non è assolutamente utilizzabile in questo senso. be electrically powered in order to perform new functions. But the current purely mechanical technology is absolutely not usable in this sense.
For higher pressures and gas flow rates, other types of meters are used, such as turbine or rotary piston ones. In this case, mechanical equipment is often associated with electronic accessories for the conversion of gas volumes as a function of pressure and temperature, and where required, also modules for the remote transmission of consumption. For these systems, electricity is normally supplied from the mains or through batteries to be replaced.
With regard to the supply of electricity, integrated Smart Meters and Smart Grids systems have been operating for years, consisting respectively of devices for measuring the energy consumed and centralized data management networks. In this way it is possible to differentiate the tariffs with respect to the time bands of consumption and manage the utilities on the basis of energy flows and the combination of user demand and the offer of operators. Given the success of this technology in the field of electricity, the Authority for Electricity and Gas, after two years of preparatory work, issued Resolution ARG / gas 155/08 of 22 October 2008 "Directives for commissioning of gas metering units, characterized by minimum functional requirements and with remote reading and remote management functions, for the redelivery points of the natural gas distribution networks ", with the aim of introducing Smart technologies in the natural gas distribution.
The document requires that the gas meter be able to measure, provide indications by means of a digital display, memorize, manage some safety functions and communicate via the transmission network, in a bidirectional way. However, currently, with the exception of meters for high gas flow rates, the existing meters have only measurement functionality without any communication output to the outside.
The structural difference between the remote reading of gas users and that of the electricity distribution sector is, in the second case, the availability of energy to power the electronic and electrical equipment that the new types of meters require. However, this does not happen in the case of meters for natural gas: in almost all cases, the connection of the meter to the electricity distribution network is complex, expensive and poses serious safety problems, as natural gas is an easily flammable gas. and connect it with a current at voltage of 220V AC could explosion. For this reason, up to now, the only realizations, even experimental ones, of gas meters with on-board electrical equipment, have been powered by non-rechargeable accumulators of different capacities, depending on the power and duration required.
However, although accumulator technology has constantly advanced, the amount of energy that can reasonably be made available is very limited, consequently forcing designers to an extreme reduction in the communication, management and accuracy capabilities of measuring instruments. The scarce availability of energy actually hinders the introduction in the field of innovative measurement technologies, based on non-volumetric principles, such as ultrasound, thermal flow mass measurement, and others, which could allow an exceptional improvement in accuracy and reliability over time of gas measurement for all parties involved, distribution companies, end customers and control bodies.

Sommario dell’Invenzione Summary of the Invention
A device powered by combustible gas and capable of producing electrical signals is described, to be used within smart meters enabled for remote reading.
Descrizione dettagliata dell’invenzione Detailed description of the invention
The technology covered by this patent is based on the production of electricity starting from natural gas, in order to allow the remote transmission of the measured values, using the natural gas itself available in unlimited quantities. In this way, by producing the energy necessary for the transmission of signals and values, the gas meter becomes energetically independent, similar to the electricity meters currently installed. This allows the increase of the communication capacities of the meter and the creation of domestic communication platforms, through home displays and the use of networks i inform the customer of the use of energy in real time, and optimize the savings in use. of the most convenient sources.
Il dispositivo oggetto di questa invenzione è costituito dai seguenti componenti (vedi Figura 1): The device object of this invention consists of the following components (see Figure 1):
1. Elemento Peltier, in grado di convertire l’energia termica in energia elettrica; 2. Strato di fibroceramica impregnata con catalizzatore attivo per la combustione flameless del gas naturale; 1. Peltier element, capable of converting thermal energy into electrical energy; 2. Fiber ceramic layer impregnated with active catalyst for the flameless combustion of natural gas;
3. Resistenza elettrica alimentata mediante batteria ausiliaria. 3. Electric heater powered by an auxiliary battery.
For safety reasons connected to the presence of natural gas, the production of electrical signals must take place without naked flames, possibly using the same natural gas as a source that is available in abundance. For this purpose, the technology of the device object of this invention is based on the use of a chemical catalyst capable of carrying out the combustion of natural gas in the absence of open flames. For this purpose, state-of-the-art catalysts can be used, which are generally made up of transition metals, such as but not limited to Ir, Pt, Pd, Ni, Co, Fe, Rh, Ru. These catalysts are finely dispersed within a ceramic fiber support by means of appropriate impregnation techniques. By way of example but not limiting, one of the techniques that can be used consists in depositing the precursors, in the appropriate proportions and in an aqueous solution form, on a high porosity ceramic fiber support and then pyrolyzing in air at a temperature of 600 ° C. In order to trigger the combustion reaction in the absence of open flames, it is necessary to raise the temperature of the catalytic bed to a temperature above 300 ° C. For this purpose, a special electrical resistance is positioned inside the ceramic fiber to be used in the ignition phase of the remote reading device. This electrical resistance is powered by an auxiliary battery. This battery can be of the disposable type, and therefore will require periodic replacement, or of the rechargeable type. In this case, the electricity needed to recharge it will be supplied directly through the Peltier element, once the natural gas combustion reaction has started.
