Description
Descrizione dell'invenzione industriale Description of the industrial invention
The present invention relates to polyolefin compositions particularly suitable for use in the preparation of blown films with improved mechanical characteristics. In particular, the present invention relates to polyolefin compositions comprising: (A) a heterophasic polyolefin composition comprising in turn a fraction (Al) insoluble in xylene and a fraction (A2) soluble in xylene, and B) a branched propylene polymer.
The present invention also relates to a process for the preparation of blown films, having improved mechanical characteristics, comprising the use of said compositions.
A further aspect of the present invention also relates to the blown films obtained from said compositions.
The blown film sector constitutes an increasingly important part in the field of polyolefin films. The films obtained by blowing in fact have a tubular shape which makes them particularly advantageous in the production of buckets for various uses (bags for urban waste, bags used in the storage of industrial materials, for frozen foods, transport bags, etc.). In fact, the tubular structure allows to reduce, compared to the use of flat films, the number of welds necessary for the formation of the bag with consequent simplification of the process. Furthermore, the versatility of the blown film technique allows, by simply varying the air blowing parameters, to obtain tubular films of different sizes, thus avoiding to give the appropriate dimensions to the films by trimming as is instead necessary in the flat head extrusion technique.
The polyolefin material mainly used in the production of blown films is polyethylene, intended as LDPE, LLDPE or their mixtures, as it has characteristics in the molten state that allow to obtain films with high productivity, and in a very wide thickness range, without compromise the stability of the bubble. (A) in view of these excellent processability characteristics, polyethylene-based films have mechanical characteristics that are not as good which make it necessary, in some particular applications such as bags used in the storage of industrial materials, to use tubular films of rather high thickness (180-200μ) with a consequent increase in costs. In fact, lower thicknesses could not allow the filling of the bags with material at temperatures higher than the ambient one without undergoing deformations that compromise the stability of the stacks constituted by the stacked bags. The same stability problem can be found in storage during the summer season when ambient temperatures can be such as to lead to deformation of the bags.
On the other hand, the use in these applications of blown films obtained from polypropylene-based polymers is particularly difficult given the poor processability characteristics of the polypropylene which give rise to frequent breakage of the bubble or in any case to an excessive orientation of the film which involves resistance impact so low as to make it unusable.
The need is therefore felt to have a polyolefin material available which at the same time has good processability on blown film production lines and is able to provide films with mechanical characteristics such as to allow a reduction in thickness compared to films polyethylene base.

As previously described, the compositions of the present invention are used in the process of preparing blown films, mono or multilayer, from which films having improved mechanical characteristics are obtained. Said films can be prepared with the processes and relative equipment generally used in the blown film technique according to what is known to those skilled in the art.
Obviously, the compositions according to the invention can contain additives capable of imparting specific properties to the articles for which the composition is intended to be produced.
Additivi utilizzabili sono quelli convenzionalmente impiegati nelle composizioni polimeriche termoplastiche quali, ad esempio, stabilizzanti, antiossidanti, anti-corrosivi, antislip, antiblocking etc. Usable additives are those conventionally used in thermoplastic polymeric compositions such as, for example, stabilizers, antioxidants, anti-corrosives, antislip, antiblocking etc.
The compositions of the invention can also contain inorganic or organic fillers, including polymeric ones. The above additives and fillers can be used in conventional amounts, as known to those skilled in the art or as easily determined by routine tests, generally up to 5% by weight of the final composition.
Any additives do not modify the weight ranges described for the components of the present invention which are to be understood as relative weight ratios between the components (Al), (A2), (B), or (A'1), (A'2) , (A "1), (A" 2) and (B).
When used in the process for the preparation of blown films, the compositions of the present invention are surprisingly processable. In fact, compositions A + B allowed an increase in the extruder capacity without bubble instability problems. As a consequence of this, a productivity was found, under the same process conditions, about 25% higher than that of the compositions in which component B is absent and substantially in line with the productivity obtained using LDPE; in particular it has been seen that, under the same conditions, the ratio between the productivity obtained using the compositions of the invention and the productivity obtained with LDPE is equal to or greater than 0.9.
The blown films obtained from compositions (A) + B) according to the present invention have improved mechanical characteristics both with respect to films obtained from LDPE and with respect to films obtained from compositions in which component B is absent. In particular, said films have a resistance to deformation (reported in the examples as Actual Force which expresses the force required to produce yield at a certain temperature) much greater than both LDPE films having a greater thickness and than films obtained from compositions alone ( TO). Moreover, the films of the invention, for Dart test values higher than 500 g which constitutes the safety limit for applications such as industrial bags, also have improved characteristics in terms of tensile modulus, and yield strength.
ESEMPI EXAMPLES
Le proprietà indicate sono state determinate secondo i metodi seguenti: The properties shown were determined according to the following methods:
Composizione dei polimeri: percentuale in peso dei vari monomeri determinata mediante I.R.; Composition of the polymers: percentage by weight of the various monomers determined by I.R .;
Insolubile in xilene: 2 g di polimero vengono disciolti in 250 cm3 di xilene a 135 °C sotto agitazione. Dopo 20 minuti la soluzione viene lasciata raffreddare mantenendo l'agitazione fino a raggiungere la temperatura di 25 °C. Dopo 30 minuti il polimero insolubile precipitato viene separato mediante filtrazione. Dalla soluzione viene allontanato il solvente mediante evaporazione in corrente di azoto ed il residuo viene essiccato sotto vuoto a 80 °C fino a quando il peso risulta costante. In questo modo viene calcolata la percentuale di polimero solubile in xilene a 25 °C e, conseguentemente, viene determinata la percentuale di polimero insolubile; Insoluble in xylene: 2 g of polymer are dissolved in 250 cm3 of xylene at 135 ° C under stirring. After 20 minutes the solution is left to cool while maintaining stirring until reaching the temperature of 25 ° C. After 30 minutes the precipitated insoluble polymer is separated by filtration. The solvent is removed from the solution by evaporation in a nitrogen stream and the residue is dried under vacuum at 80 ° C until the weight is constant. In this way the percentage of polymer soluble in xylene at 25 ° C is calculated and, consequently, the percentage of insoluble polymer is determined;
Melt strenght: The method consists in measuring the resistance of a "wire" of melted polymer by operating at a specific drawing speed. The polymer is extruded at 200 ° C through a circular slit with a diameter of Imm; The polymer is then stretched at a constant acceleration of 0.0012 cm / sec2 by measuring the resistance offered by means of a melt strength measuring instrument (Rheotens melt tension instrument model 2001 produced by Gottfert) which records the force as a function of stretching. The test is continued until failure and the maximum measured value corresponds to the melt strength.
