A brake disc consists of a circular crown having an internal profile (1) shaped, for fixing on the hub of a wheel, and a plurality of through holes (2), the axis of said holes (2) forming with the plane of the disc an angle (a) less than 90 ° and greater than 0 °, preferably between 25 ° and 65 °, and even more preferably 45 °. Description
Descrizione dell'invenzione industriale dal titolo: "DISCO PER FRENO CON FORI DI RAFFREDDAMENTO AD ASSE INCLINATO" Description of the industrial invention entitled: "DISC FOR BRAKE WITH COOLING HOLES WITH INCLINED AXIS"
The present invention relates to discs used in disc brakes mounted on motor vehicles, typically motorcycles and passenger cars, and in particular to self-ventilated discs provided with cooling holes.
As is known, the effectiveness of a disc brake is seriously compromised by overheating of the disc, which can lead to deterioration of the disc itself. For this reason, various solutions have been studied to increase, with the same diameter, the surface of the disc through which the heat can be eliminated by radiation or convection.
A first solution, adopted above all on high-performance cars, is that of a double disc consisting of two thin parallel discs joined, usually by welding, by means of short pins orthogonal to the planes of the two discs. In this way, a plurality of radial cooling channels are obtained in which the air tends to flow due to the centrifugal effect due to the rotation of the disc. These radial channels are optionally put into communication with the lateral faces by means of axial holes, ie with an axis orthogonal to the plane of the disc. Examples of this type of disc are described in patents FR 2,678,694 and FR 2,700,373.
However, this type of structure has considerable drawbacks in terms of weight and axial bulk, as well as high production cost due to its complexity. There is also the risk of poor uniformity of the mechanical strength of the disc due to localized heating that occurs during welding.
A much simpler and cheaper solution consists of a single disc in which a plurality of through axial holes are obtained, usually by blanking. This reduces the cost and size of the disc but also its effectiveness. In fact, the cooling surface obtained in the body of the disc is equal only to
dove "n" è il numero di fori, "h" lo where "n" is the number of holes, "h" lo
Furthermore, since the axis of the holes is at 90 ° with respect to the plane of the disc which is also the plane of rotation, there is no air flow through the hole due to the centrifugal effect or to the effect of the relative wind that hits the moving disc. .
The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a brake disc which exceeds the limits of known discs.
This object is achieved by means of a brake disc having the characteristics reported in claim 1.
A first essential advantage of the brake disc according to the present invention is that of having a greater cooling surface with the same number and size of the holes compared to a traditional single disc, while maintaining limited cost and size. This obviously translates into greater braking efficiency and greater resistance to heavy use.
A second significant advantage of the present disc derives from the air flow which is established through the holes with the double result of increasing the removal of heat by convection and of obtaining a cleaning effect of the holes. In this way the noise of the brake is also reduced thanks to the elimination of dust, both from the pads and atmospheric, which causes the typical "whistles".
Still another advantage of the particular shape of the disc in question derives from the acute angle incidence with which the hole passes on the pad, with a tendency to a greater removal of the consumable material of the latter. This produces an increase in the braking power at the same pressure of the pads on the disc, i.e. a faster dissipation of the kinetic energy of the vehicle.
These and other advantages and characteristics of the brake disc according to the present invention will become evident to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description of an embodiment thereof with reference to the attached drawings in which:
la Fig.1 è una vista laterale di un disco per freno secondo l'invenzione; Fig.1 is a side view of a brake disc according to the invention;
la Fig.2 è una vista in sezione del suddetto disco secondo la linea A-A di fig.l; e Fig.2 is a sectional view of the aforesaid disc along the line A-A of fig. And
Fig.3 is a sectional view of the aforementioned disc along the line B-B of fig.l.
With reference to these figures, it can be seen that a brake disc according to the present invention has a traditional circular crown shape with a shaped internal profile 1, for fixing on the hub of a wheel, and a plurality of through holes 2. An innovative aspect of this disc consists in the fact that the holes 2 are neither axial nor radial, ie their axis forms an angle less than 90 ° and greater than 0 ° with the plane of the disc. This allows to obtain the above mentioned advantages of greater dissipation surface, constant air flow through the holes 2 and acute angle incidence on the pads. These advantages can be obtained without resorting to complex structures or construction processes, but simply by drilling the disc with a normal cylindrical tip arranged in an inclined position with respect to the plane of the disc and oriented in a substantially tangential direction.
Obviously, the number and distribution of the holes illustrated in Fig. 1 are given purely by way of example, and can be freely modified according to requirements. In particular, it may be preferable to alternate the direction of inclination of the holes along the disc so that on each face the number of holes that pass on the relative pad with an acute angle and those that pass with an obtuse angle are substantially equal. In this way a too different wear of the pads is avoided between one side of the disc and the other, and a "symmetrical" aerodynamic behavior is also obtained since the air flows through the holes 2 both from the right side to the left and vice versa.
It is also possible to avoid the effect of greater removal of material from the pads by making the holes 2 in a substantially radial rather than tangential direction. In this case it is superfluous to alternate the direction of inclination of the holes in the radial direction. By selecting any other orientation of the holes in a direction between the tangential and the radial, it is possible to determine a greater or lesser effect of material removal from the pads.
As regards the extent of the inclination of the holes 2, in the example illustrated in fig. 2 we have a = 45 °, a value that the inventor considers a good compromise between the increase in the surface of the lateral mantle of the hole and the increasing the surface area of the resulting elliptical end holes on the faces of the disc. It is clear that this value can be freely varied according to specific construction requirements, it being understood that the value of the dissipation surface obtained through the inclination of the holes is equal to
In the illustrated case of a = 45 °, the dissipation surface increase is 41.4%, with the same diameter and number of holes, but the inclination can indicatively vary between 65 ° and 25 ° with an increase in surface between 10.31 and 136.6% respectively. Values of inclination higher than 65 ° lead to a surface increase which is too small to be effective, while angles lower than 25 ° give rise to elliptical end holes which excessively reduce the surface of the disk faces, with a possible decrease in the resistance of the same.
It is clear that the embodiment of the brake disc according to the invention described and illustrated above constitutes only an example susceptible of numerous variations. For example, the holes 2 can also have a section different from the circular one, and clearly the disc can be made of any material such as typically steel, cast iron, carbon, etc.
Any additions and / or modifications may therefore be made to the brake disc object of the present invention without however departing from the scope of protection of the invention.
