Description
DESCRIZIONE dell’invenzione industriale dal titolo: DESCRIPTION of the industrial invention entitled:
“LEGHE GETTER PER L'ASSORBIMENTO DI IDROGENO A TEMPERATURE ELEVATE” "GETTER ALLOYS FOR HYDROGEN ABSORPTION AT HIGH TEMPERATURES"
The present invention refers to getter alloys for the absorption of hydrogen at high temperatures.
Many industrial or research applications require a hydrogen-free environment in a closed container for their correct operation; the internal space of the container can be kept under high vacuum or filled with an atmosphere of a given gas (or gas mixture). Typical examples of devices for these applications in which hydrogen is harmful are the cavities evacuated by thermal evacuation, due to the high thermal conductivity of this gas; o some types of lamps with a gaseous filling, in which the presence of hydrogen in the gas generally leads to the variation of the physical operating parameters of the lamp (for example, the ignition voltage). The production processes of these devices include an evacuation of the container and possible filling with the desired gas, but every time there is a high vacuum or a hydrogen-free gas, some mechanisms tend to reintroduce hydrogen into the container. These mechanisms are mainly represented by the degassing of the container walls, or hydrogen permeation through these walls from the external atmosphere to the container, thus leading to problems in the proper functioning of said devices.
Questi materiali ed il loro uso per assorbire gas da spazi evacuati o gas inerti sono ben noti e descritti in numerosi documenti, come i brevetti US 3.203.901 (leghe Zr-Al), US 4.071.335 (leghe Zr-Ni), US 4.306.887 (leghe Zr-Fe), US 4.312.669 (leghe Zr-V-Fe), US 4.668.424 (leghe Zr-Ni-Terre Rare) e US 5.961.750 (leghe Zr-Co-Terre Rare). These problems are normally faced by placing in said devices a getter material, that is a material having the ability to chemically fix molecules of hydrogen as well as of other gases such as water, oxygen and carbon oxides. Getter materials are generally elements of the ΙΠ, IV and V groups of transition metals or their alloys with other metals, generally transition metals or aluminum. The most widely used getter materials are titanium-based alloys and, in particular, zirconium. These materials and their use to absorb gases from evacuated spaces or inert gases are well known and described in numerous documents, such as US patents 3,203,901 (Zr-Al alloys), US 4,071,335 (Zr-Ni alloys), US 4.306.887 (Zr-Fe alloys), US 4.312.669 (Zr-V-Fe alloys), US 4.668.424 (Zr-Ni-Earth Rare alloys) and US 5.961.750 (Zr-Co-Earth Rare alloys) .
Getter alloys show a hydrogen absorption behavior different from that towards other gases. While for most gases the chemical absorption by these alloys is irreversible, the hydrogen absorption of the getter alloys is an equilibrium process, reversible as a function of temperature: hydrogen is absorbed effectively at relatively low temperatures ( below 200-400 ° C, depending on the alloy chemical composition actually used), but is released at relatively high temperatures, generally above 500-600 ° C.
Operating temperatures below approximately 500 ° C cover most practical uses, but there are some special applications where very low levels of hydrogen are required and which involve very high temperatures. A possible industrial application of this type are X-ray tubes, consisting of an evacuated tube in which there are an anode and a cathode: the anode emits X-rays when it is hit by electrons emitted from the cathode. During the electronic bombardment, the anode temperature rises releasing hydrogen (together with other gases); if not properly absorbed, this can accumulate in the tube leading to a reduction in the number of electrons reaching the anode. Another example of evacuated devices in which very high temperatures are reached are so-called power tubes. Under this general definition different types of electron tubes are grouped, having different shapes and sizes and used for different purposes; these tubes have in common the fact of comprising an evacuated space containing at least one cathode for the emission of electrons and an anode which receives the electrons and optionally one or more grids to control the motion of the electrons, and the fact that the currents that travel in the tube they are of high intensity, so that the cathode and anode undergo intense heating. Power tubes include for example klynstrons and magnetrons, used in radio frequency communications, or tubes for rectifying high intensity alternating currents. Finally, another important industrial application in which hydrogen must be absorbed at high temperatures is represented by some lamps, in particular small-sized high-pressure metal halide lamps. These lamps consist of a quartz or translucent alumina tube, called a "burner", inside which there are two electrodes (generally in tungsten) and a gaseous mixture consisting of a rare gas (generally argon at about 80 mbar), a few milligrams of mercury and metal halide vapors, e.g. sodium halides and Rare Earth metal halides. During operation, a plasma is formed in the burner which causes dissociation of the halides, with the emission of the characteristic wavelengths of the resulting atoms or ions, and the walls of the burner reach temperatures in the 800-1000 ° C range. At these temperatures, the walls of the burner are easily crossed by gases, such as hydrogen. The hydrogen in the burner is harmful for the operation of these lamps already at extremely low concentrations, according to different mechanisms: for example, when hydrogen is present in the burner it leads to an increase in the potential required to trigger the discharge (the so-called "potential ignition ") with consequent possible evaporation of the metal of the cathodes, its deposition on the internal walls of the burner and blackening of the lamp. Furthermore, the hydrogen present in a bulb that encloses the burner gives rise in certain types of lamps to a complex sequence of transport of gas from the bulb to the burner and sodium from the burner to the bulb, with the consequence of a varied luminous efficiency of the lamp. . Finally, hydrogen can be an oxygen carrier (both in the form of water molecules and OH radicals) in the atmosphere of the lamp: in the presence of dysprosium bromide (which is often present in the gaseous filling of lamps), the oxygen reacts to form dysprosium oxybromide, which is known to cause devitrification of the quartz walls of the burner, with consequent opacification and reduction of light emission (a phenomenon known as a “wall attack” problem); on the contrary, when hydrogen is not present, oxygen is fixed in the quartz lattice, thus not being available for the formation of dysprosium oxybromide. To reduce the migration of hydrogen into the burner, this is placed in a controlled atmosphere container, an outer glass bulb that can be filled with nitrogen but more commonly (about 90% of the production of these lamps) is evacuated. However, even this expedient does not completely eliminate the problem of the accumulation of hydrogen in the burner, which can be released by the components themselves of the lamp (for example, through dissociation at high temperature of the traces of water introduced into the burner with the hygroscopic halides), or in any case permeate through the outer bulb due to the high temperatures it is at during lamp operation. In medium or large sized lamps, it is always possible to find a position inside the bulb sufficiently far from the burner to have a temperature lower than about 400 ° C; a known type getter placed in this "cold" position is effective in absorbing hydrogen (both hydrogen that can enter the bulb from the external atmosphere and that deriving from inside the burner); the getter devices most commonly used for this purpose are based on an alloy with a composition by weight of zirconium 84% - aluminum 16%, described in US patent 3.203.901, produced and sold by SAES Getters S.p.A. of Lainate, Italy, with the name St 101. On the other hand in small lamps (also referred to in the sector as "compact" lamps), in which the burner has a diameter generally between about 1 and 2 centimeters and length up to at 4-5 centimeters, while the external bulb has dimensions up to about 4 centimeters in diameter and length less than about 10 centimeters, there are no parts of the lamp that during operation are at temperatures below about 600 ° C. As previously explained, at these temperatures the traditional zirconium-based getter alloys are unable to avoid the accumulation of hydrogen in the external bulb and, consequently, in the burner.
Pure yttrium is known, for example from US patent 3,953,755, to have a low equilibrium pressure of hydrogen at high temperatures, but its properties are not sufficient in applications such as high-pressure lamps of small metal halides.
Another characteristic required for getter alloys to be used in high temperature applications is that they have the lowest possible vapor pressure: metal vapors deriving from the alloy could interfere with the correct functioning of the device in which they are used, for example in the case of of the lamps settling on the walls of the bulb leading to the phenomenon of "blackening" of the lamp.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide getter alloys for the absorption of hydrogen at high temperatures, generally above 600 ° C, as well as to provide getter devices for the use of said alloys.
This object is achieved according to the present invention with the use of yttrium-vanadium alloys containing from 90% to 98% by weight of yttrium, or yttrium-tin alloys containing from 80% to 90% by weight of yttrium.
The invention will be described below with reference to the Figures in which:
- le Figg. da 1 a 7 mostrano diverse possibili forme di dispositivi getter realizzati con le leghe deH'invenzione; - Figs. 1 to 7 show different possible forms of getter devices made with the alloys of the invention;
- la Fig. 8 mostra in modo schematico il sistema per la misura della pressione di equilibrio di idrogeno su un materiale getter; - Fig. 8 schematically shows the system for measuring the equilibrium pressure of hydrogen on a getter material;
- Fig. 9 graphically shows the equilibrium pressure curves of hydrogen of two alloys of the invention and, for comparison, of pure yttrium.
Alloys containing percentages by weight of yttrium higher than those previously indicated have essentially the same absorption characteristics as yttrium, not sufficient for some high temperature applications; alloys with weight percentages of yttrium lower than those indicated have, at the expected operating temperatures, a higher vapor pressure than the alloys of the invention and could give rise to unwanted evaporates.
Among the yttrium-vanadium alloys, the preferred alloy is the one with a percentage composition by weight Y 96% - V 4%, while among the yttrium-tin alloys the preferred one is that with a percentage composition by weight Y 84% - Sn 16%.
The alloys of the invention can be produced by casting starting from the pure elements, preferably in powders or pieces, in the desired weight ratios. The fusion must be carried out in a controlled atmosphere, for example under vacuum or inert gas (argon is preferred), to avoid oxidation of the alloy being prepared. Depending on the specific composition, these alloys melt at temperatures between about 1100 and 1450 ° C.
The alloys of the invention can be used in the form of getter devices made with a single alloy body. Figures 1 to 3 show devices of this type. Figures 1 and 2 show, respectively, a cylinder, 10, and a tablet, 20, made by blanking an alloy sheet of suitable thickness. For practical use, the devices must be arranged in a fixed position in the container to be kept free from hydrogen. The devices 10 and 20 could be fixed directly to an internal surface of the container, for example by spot welding when said surface is made of metal. Alternatively, devices of type 10 or 20 can be positioned in the container by means of suitable supports; the mounting on the support can be made by welding or mechanical compression. Figure 3 shows another possible embodiment of a getter device, 30, in which a discrete alloy body of the invention is used. In this case the alloy is produced in the form of a strip, from which pieces of the desired size are cut; the length, 31, is folded in the area 32 around the support 33 in the form of a metal wire; the support 33 can be linear, but preferably has loops 34, 34 ', 34 ", which help the location of the segment 31; the maintenance of the shape of the piece can be ensured with one or more welding points (not shown in the figure) in the overlapping area 35, but even a simple compression during folding around the support 33 may be sufficient, given the plasticity of these alloys .
Alternatively, getter devices can be made using powders of the alloys of the invention. In the case of the use of powders, these preferably have a particle size lower than 500 µm, and even more preferably comprised between 40 and 125 µm.
Powder-based devices are shown in Figures 4 to 7. Figure 4 shows a cut-away view of a device 40, having the shape of a tablet 41, into which the support 42 is inserted; a device of this type can be made for example by compressing powders in a mold, having prepared the support in the mold before pouring the powders into it. Alternatively, the support 42 can be welded to the tablet 4L. Figure 5 shows a device 50 consisting of powders of an alloy of the invention, 51, compressed in a metal container 52; the device 50 can be fixed to a support (not shown in the figure) for example by welding it to the container 52. Finally, figures 6 and 7 show different views of another possible embodiment of a getter device of the invention . This type of device consists of a support 60, formed starting from a metal sheet 61: in the sheet a depression 62 is first made by molding in a suitable form (not shown), after which a part of the bottom of the depression is removed by blanking, obtaining a hole 63; the support is kept in the molding form and the depression is filled with alloy powders, which are then compressed on site obtaining the device 70 (seen in section along the line A-A 'of figure 6) in which the packet of powders, 71, has two exposed surfaces, 72 and 73, for the absorption of gas.
In all the devices of the invention the supports, the containers and any other metal part not constituted by an alloy of the invention are made with metals with the lowest possible vapor pressure, such as for example tungsten, tantalum, niobium or molybdenum, to prevent these parts from evaporating due to the high operating temperature to which said devices are exposed.
L’invenzione verrà ulteriormente illustrata dai seguenti esempi. The invention will be further illustrated by the following examples. These non-limiting examples illustrate some embodiments intended to teach those skilled in the art how to put the invention into practice and to represent the best way considered for the realization of the invention.
ESEMPIO 1 EXAMPLE 1
This example refers to the measurement of the equilibrium pressure of hydrogen on the alloy of percentage composition by weight Y 96% - V 4%.
For this measurement, a measurement system schematized in figure 8 is used, consisting of a hydrogen tank S connected, by means of a needle valve, Vls to a chamber C to which a capacitive manometer MC is connected. Chamber C is connected, by means of a liquid nitrogen trap T (which has the function of blocking impurities in the gas, mainly water) and a valve V2, to the measuring chamber M equipped with a heating system (not shown in the figure). In chamber M there is the sample holder P, whose temperature can be measured by means of the thermocouple TC. Chambers C and M are connected, respectively by means of valves V3 and V4, to a pumping system (not shown in the figure). The isolated space obtained by closing valves Vi, V2 and V3 has a known volume, indicated as Vd0S (hydrogen metering volume), which in the case of the test is 1.1 liters. Similarly, the isolated space obtained by closing the valves Vi, V3 and V4 and opening the valve V2 has a known volume, indicated as Vtot (total volume of the measuring system), in the case of the test equal to 2.2 liters. 1.2 grams of powder of the alloy composition by weight Y 96% - V 4% are placed in the sample holder P. The valve Vi is closed and the other valves of the system are opened and, by means of the pumping system, the chambers C and M until a pressure of 10 <'5> mbar is reached. Still under pumping, the sample is activated, heating it by induction from outside the chamber M, by treatment at 800 ° C for 10 minutes. The sample is then brought to the test temperature, which in this case is 700 ° C. The valves V2, V3 and V4 are closed and the valve Vls is opened by introducing hydrogen into the chamber C up to a pressure of 2.6 mbar, after which the valve Vi is closed; this pressure is referred to as Pjn (initial pressure). The valve V2 opens by expanding the hydrogen in chamber M, which is partially absorbed by the sample. The pressure decrease in the system is recorded, until it reaches the stable value of 3 x IO <'4> mbar: this is the equilibrium pressure, Peq, of the hydrogen on the sample under the test conditions. From the knowledge of Vtot, Vd0S, Pin, Peq and the mass of the sample, indicated with Me, the quantity of hydrogen absorbed by the sample, indicated with Qr, is obtained through the relationship:
The Qr value thus obtained constitutes the first point of the hydrogen equilibrium pressure curve on the alloy.
The test is repeated three times, introducing a new sample into chamber M and introducing a different hydrogen dose into the system at each subsequent measurement.
I valori ottenuti nelle quattro prove vengono riportati in grafico come curva 1 in figura 9, come pressione di equilibrio di idrogeno (P, misurata in mbar) in funzione della quantità di gas assorbita per grammo di lega (Q, misurata in mbar x 1 / g). The values obtained in the four tests are plotted as curve 1 in figure 9, as equilibrium pressure of hydrogen (P, measured in mbar) as a function of the quantity of gas absorbed per gram of alloy (Q, measured in mbar x 1 / g).
ESEMPIO 2 EXAMPLE 2
The test of Example 1 is repeated with four samples of powder of the alloy having a weight percentage composition Y 84% - Sn 16%.
I risultati della prova vengono riportati in grafico in figura 9 come curva 2. ESEMPIO 3 (COMPARATIVO) The test results are plotted in figure 9 as curve 2. EXAMPLE 3 (COMPARATIVE)
The test of Example 1 is repeated with four samples of pure yttrium powder. The test results are plotted in figure 9 as curve 3.
ESEMPIO 4 EXAMPLE 4
In this example, the operating characteristics of lamps with a getter of the invention, lamps with a getter of the known art and lamps without getter are compared.
Six strips weighing 35 mg of the alloy composition Y 96% - V4% are treated with a preheating operation of 5 hours at 650 ° C in vacuum, and subsequently placed in the outer bulb of six compact high pressure metal halide lamps ; the burner of these lamps is made of quartz and the gas filling includes mercury, argon and halides of dysprosium, holmium, gadolinium and cesium. The lamps have a nominal power of 575 Watts and a specific power load on the wall of at least 45 W / cm <2>. The lamps are operated for 500 hours, during which the re-ignition potential (measured in Volts) and the wall attachment are observed at different times; the attack of the wall is measured as the percentage of the burner surface that has become opaque, and its value is estimated by visual inspection. The re-ignition potential and wall attack potential values for the six lamps are averaged and reported in Table 1 below.
For comparison, the same tests are carried out on five lamps containing a known getter, i.e. small pills with a nominal content of 90 mg of the aforementioned St 101 alloy, and on six reference lamps, i.e. lamps of the same type but without getter. The averaged data obtained on these lamps are reported in Table 1.
The results of the tests confirm the best hydrogen absorption characteristics of the alloys of the invention. The curves in figure 9 show that, at 700 ° C, one gram of an alloy of the invention has, for quantities of hydrogen absorbed of about 1-5 mbar x 1, an equilibrium pressure of hydrogen which is about an order of smaller than that of a gram of pure yttrium, so as to allow a better removal of this gas at high temperature. This is also confirmed by the lamp tests: the results in Table 1 clearly show that the lamps of the invention have better properties compared to the lamps with getters of the known art, in this case St 101 (Zr-Al) or no getter, i.e. a relatively low value of re-ignition potential and a delay in the attack of the wall, which indirectly confirm a lower quantity of hydrogen in the lamp.
The curves of figure 9 can also be interpreted to obtain the quantity of material necessary to guarantee a hydrogen pressure lower than a desired value in a closed space; for example, by setting this value equal to 10 <'3> mbar, it can be seen from the graph that the alloys of the invention have an absorption capacity which is about three times that of pure yttrium; compared to pure yttrium, an alloy of the invention therefore allows to guarantee the same hydrogen pressure with about a third of weight, which allows to considerably reduce the dimensions of the getter device, with evident advantages in particular in the case that the container to be keep free from hydrogen has a limited volume.
