Description
DOMANDA DI BREVETTO PER INVENZIONE INDUSTRIALE DAL TITOLO: PATENT APPLICATION FOR INDUSTRIAL INVENTION WITH THE TITLE:
“Impianto per la produzione di energia elettrica da olio vegetale combustibile autoprodotto mediante crescita di alghe†⠀ œSystem for the production of electricity from self-produced combustible vegetable oil through algae growthâ €
CAMPO DELL’INVENZIONE FIELD OF INVENTION
STATO DELL’ARTE The invention which is the subject of the present application refers to the alternative energy sector, in particular to the technical sector relating to the production of fuel obtained from vegetable oils. In the present invention, the fuel is produced starting from microalgae with a high lipid content grown in suitable plants. STATE OF THE ART
L’olio vegetale combustibile esiste in commercio da anni ed à ̈ sostanzialmente un tipo di gasolio con caratteristiche simili a quello ottenuto per distillazione frazionata del petrolio ma con importanti peculiarità : Fuel vegetable oil has been on the market for years and is essentially a type of diesel with characteristics similar to that obtained by fractional distillation of petroleum but with important peculiarities:
†à ̈ ottenuto da materie prime rinnovabili vegetali o animali; â € It is obtained from renewable vegetable or animal raw materials;
†non contiene, se non in minima parte, composti aromatici ovvero derivati del benzene che sono fortemente cancerogeni;ha un contenuto in zolfo inferiore di circa 100 volte rispetto al gasolio ottenuto da combustibili fossili; ⠀ it does not contain, if not a small part, aromatic compounds or benzene derivatives which are highly carcinogenic; it has a sulfur content about 100 times lower than diesel obtained from fossil fuels;
†à ̈ completamente biodegradabile. â € It is completely biodegradable.
To date, industrially, combustible vegetable oil is obtained from oily seeds, which have a high fat content. In particular, sunflower, rapeseed, corn seeds are used as well as other vegetables and, partially, recovered vegetable oils.
The high fat content is essential for the production of fuel as this is obtained through mechanical and chemical processes from this very component which is oleic in the seeds.
This is mainly composed of mixtures of fatty acids, or carbon compounds characterized by the presence of the group = COOH and glycerol, which is an alcohol which is the basis for the production of glycerin.
Generally glycerol is separated precisely because of its viscosity and tendency to deposit waxes, which are incompatible with the operation of an engine. Fatty acids are the combustible part, after a chemical transformation, as they contain numerous carbon atoms. Most animal and vegetable fatty acids have molecules composed of a number of carbon atoms ranging between 10 and 24. For the production of combustible vegetable oils, oleic acid and linoleic acid (C 18 ), both contained in oil seeds; acid molecules with a higher number of C atoms, in fact, worsen combustion and tend to generate unwanted deposits.
From a practical point of view, combustible vegetable oil is substantially similar to gas oil obtained by fractional distillation of petroleum. Despite having a slightly lower yield, it also has a higher density so the actual consumption is equivalent as shown by the fact that the calorific value is the same. Furthermore, the cetane number, that is the parameter that evaluates the self-ignition capacity of a fuel to be used in a diesel cycle engine, is even better than the `` fossil '' diesel so that the engine powered by combustible vegetable oil is less noisy and more efficient.
The industrial production of combustible vegetable oil is also linked to the obligation for producers to place on the market gasoline or diesel with a percentage of at least 4.5% of biofuel. In Italy, for example, about 700 thousand tons of combustible vegetable oil were produced in 2009.
The combustible vegetable oil currently made from vegetable raw material involves the exploitation of large agricultural areas for the cultivation of oily plants; this has important consequences both on the cost of production and on the social repercussions:
⠀ Reduction of areas devoted to food production.
In 2003 it was estimated that 9.3 million hectares of soybean or sunflower cultivation are needed to produce about 5.5 million tons of fuel vegetable oil (not even 2% of EU needs), or about once and half the area then used in Europe for food crops.
Another immediately understandable parameter is that the average weekly productivity is less than 20 l of combustible vegetable oil per hectare cultivated (about 1000 l / hectare x year).
†Resa dipendente dalle condizioni climatiche. ⠀ Emissions in the soil and in the atmosphere and energy consumption due to the production cycle, including agricultural machinery, fertilizers and pesticides. ⠀ Yield dependent on climatic conditions.
†Necessità di fertilizzazione e rotazione dei terreni. ⠀ Need for fertilization and land rotation.
For these reasons, research has also focused on the cultivation of organisms other than the vegetable raw material, directing its efforts, in particular, towards microalgae.
Microalgae are organisms that live in salt or fresh water; they do not feed on other organisms but grow essentially through the mechanism of chlorophyll photosynthesis, that is, they use the CO2 contained in the water as nourishment in the presence of light, growing and releasing oxygen. Basically the same mechanism as trees, but in water. Algae, therefore, are autotrophic organisms.
The industrial cultivation of microalgae began in the 1980s as they form the food base of molluscs and aquaculture fish species. Subsequently, the systems were also developed for the production of food supplements for humans and animals or for the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. In particular, Spirulina, Chlorella and Dunaliella microalgae were cultivated.
The major production sites are located in the tropical belt, in southern California, in China, in India, in the Hawaiian Islands due to climatic factors and the temperature of the water which represents an essential parameter in the growth rate of microalgae.
The typical structure of the microalgae cultivation plant generally includes special tanks or ponds or channeled paths purposely created outdoors (raceways).
If made indoors, these cultivation systems generally use transparent tube bundles (for example in PVC) to allow light to penetrate inside and start photosynthesis, with forced circulation of the fluid containing the microalgae.
Il bilancio ecologico appare quindi promettente poiché: The interest in the cultivation of some types of microalgae is mainly due to the high yield of combustible vegetable oil, in a process in which the algae even absorbs CO2 for its own nourishment. The ecological balance therefore appears promising since:
†non vengono consumati combustibili fossili; la fonte à ̈ rinnovabile;l’accrescimento avviene sottraendo CO2all’atmosfera; â € no fossil fuels are consumed; the source is renewable, the growth takes place by subtracting CO2 from the atmosphere;
†la coltura non sottrae terreni alla coltivazione agricola; ⠀ the crop does not subtract land from agricultural cultivation;
â € production waste can be used as feed or fuel; the extraction process is similar to that of oleic seeds.
On the other hand, the main critical issues that have so far prevented the spread of the use of microalgae for the production of fuel vegetable oil are the following: â € the overall yield, limited by the low concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and therefore by the slowness of the growth process, also due to the low availability of light. The latter is limited by the alternation of day / night, by seasonality and by the poor penetration into the water so that only a few cm of surface water can be counted on for the activation of photosynthesis. â € The energy expenditure necessary for the continuous agitation of the fluid, which is a fundamental parameter for the rapid growth of the algae.
⠀ The difficulty of collecting and separating the seaweed from the water.
â € The need for water at a sufficient temperature (> 20 ° C). â € The risk of both physico-chemical and biological contamination of water. Despite the factors listed above, the expected performance is nevertheless very high. Currently, microalgae can produce combustible vegetable oil, per unit of cultivated area, 15 to 300 times more than traditional crops. Furthermore, the harvesting cycle is much faster and approximately equal to one harvest every 10 days instead of, at most, two harvests per year as in traditional crops. According to the results of a research published in 2007, the production values of fuel vegetable oil from microalgae per surface unit are up to 16 times higher than the best terrestrial plant, the oil palm.
Another 2007 study projects market values for microalgae-derived products of USD 1000 / ton for cosmetic and food uses, USD 600 / ton for fuel vegetable oil production and USD 30 / ton for CO2 absorbing production. integrated in the previous two.
To date, therefore, the possibility of using microalgae in an economically advantageous way for the production of fuel vegetable oil remains unsatisfied.
Therefore, the first purpose of the present invention is that of realizing an integrated plant that overcomes the problems that currently prevent the large-scale use of microalgae for the production of fuel oil. These problems can be summarized in the following points:
a) ridotta produttività legata all’utilizzo di impianti di ampia superficie disposti all’aperto; a) reduced productivity linked to the use of large surface facilities arranged outdoors;
b) necessità di disporre in abbondanza di acqua a temperatura >20°C; b) need to have plenty of water at a temperature> 20 ° C;
c) disponibilità di sufficienti quantità di CO2; c) availability of sufficient quantities of CO2;
BREVE DESCRIZIONE DELLE FIGURE d) need to stir the liquid mass hosting the microalgae culture. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

Finally, suitable mechanical devices allow the emptying of the bags by pouring.
La presente invenzione à ̈ tale da superare i problemi tecnici dello stato dell’arte in quanto: The present invention is such as to overcome the technical problems of the state of the art as:

d’) La massa liquida può agevolmente essere ricircolata con l’ausilio di semplici pompe. dâ € ™) The liquid mass can easily be recirculated with the aid of simple pumps.
The plant according to the present invention, therefore, is substantially autonomous and allows the production of significant quantities of microalgae continuously in specific industrial plants without the consumption of land and natural resources.

The main functions of said algae A growth plant are as follows: promote the circulation of the algae culture fluid at a controlled flow rate, favor the passage of light in the fluid for the activation of chlorophyll photosynthesis, eliminate the excess of O2 that is formed in the photosynthesis reaction inside said reactor and finally collect the algal production. The aforementioned phases are essential for the yield of the plant which according to the present invention, in this sense, is innovative as it is made completely internally and with a substantially closed cycle, keeping the physical-chemical parameters under complete control. involved.
Il processo di fotosintesi avviene secondo la reazione chimica: The process of photosynthesis occurs according to the chemical reaction:
6 CO2+ 6 H20 = C6H12O6+ 6 O2in presenza di luce. 6 CO2 + 6 H20 = C6H12O6 + 6 O2 in the presence of light.
The starting substances are therefore water and carbon dioxide and the substances obtained are glucose (which the microalgae organism then accumulates substantially in the form of lipids as an energy reserve) and oxygen that must be released, as well as to avoid the presence of gas under pressure, also because its accumulation would slow down the reaction.
To obtain a good yield in growth and, therefore, in oil production, it is necessary to optimize the management of a series of fundamental physico-chemical parameters that it is not always possible to carry out in traditional plants which, consequently, have a limited efficiency. This is the reason why traditional plants are mainly aimed at the production of feed and supplements which, on the market, have a price per unit of weight higher than fuel vegetable oil.
The fundamental parameters that determine the quantity of biomass are: The lipid content of the microalgae, the temperature of the culture water, the light and agitation of the culture water.
The lipid content of the microalgae is actually a parameter that provides an almost obligatory choice as it is more convenient to grow microalgae with a high lipid content.
The average composition of the so-called spirulina algae, the production of which is the goal of a preferred realization of the plant according to the present invention, is the following: 40% lipids, 25% cellulose, 20% proteins / lignin, 10% starch and 5% carbohydrates.
The percentage of lipids (fats) is directly proportional to the production of oil with an average yield factor of about 50% by weight.
The residual part does not constitute waste as it is commonly used, as mentioned, by the cosmetics and feed / food supplement industry. Furthermore, part of the residue can also be used as solid fuel. There are also parameters that also influence the growth rate of the algae and are therefore fundamental in industrial production:
The temperature of the culture water is a fundamental physical parameter so it is very important to be able to maintain its constant value inside the system, which is very difficult in outdoor systems which, for this reason, are generally made in the tropical belt. The optimal temperature is between 15 ° C and 35 ° C; temperatures outside this range do not allow the microalgae to grow unless very slowly.
Light is the source of energy necessary for the activation of the photosynthesis process, which in nature is in effect a reaction based on solar energy. In plants built up to now on an industrial scale, the light comes directly from the sun. Transparent PVC tube bundle systems are also generally placed in open or closed structures but always naturally irradiated.
Special lamps are also used in the laboratory with a wavelength suitable for the reaction in microalgae, which has been tested to be a range of specific wavelengths, in the visible range between red and blue.
The plant according to the present invention optimizes this parameter with the use of artificial light optimized on the necessary wavelength using low voltage LEDs that have several advantages in terms of duration, efficiency, controllability and energy saving or fluorescent lamps both suitable with wavelengths between 380 and 750 nanometers. The maximum peaks of photosynthesis activity are at 430 and 662 nanometers but this is the apical point of the curve.
The power required is, at most, 150 W / m <2>.
The agitation of the culture water is the most important parameter for the efficiency of production as it allows to: prevent the algae from settling on the bottom of the container due to the weight; minimize mutual shading; maximize contact with nutrients and CO2, and finally remove the oxygen produced in the reaction.
In addition to the strict control of the aforementioned parameters, the collection of the algae produced is of fundamental importance, which must be simple and effective. For this purpose, the plant object of the invention has a layout and devices that optimize these needs in a limited and closed environment, creating a continuous and complete process of production, treatment and combustion within a plant. of combustible vegetable oil for the production of electricity.
The algae growth plant can be based on reactors of known type and preferably on vertical module reactors - of the so-called â € œbagâ € type - or with single tube or transparent tube bundle, suspended and mechanically supported, in which the water is forced to circulate by means of suitable pumps inside the fall labyrinth paths.
The circulation pumps are suitably sized and manufactured in order to avoid physical or mechanical degradation of the microalgae.
The culture water temperature is kept within the expected range thanks to a heat exchanger that directly or indirectly uses the heat of the exhaust fumes to heat the water in circulation.
The lighting is controlled by special lamps interposed between the reactors in order to allow the photosynthetic reaction even in the absence of natural light. To this end, the lamps are automatically controlled by a detection system and emit light in a specific range of wavelengths.
Agitation is guaranteed by the continuous flow generated by the circulation pumps and by the particular conformation of the sliding channels.
Each single module is connected to the others in a closed circuit and is made of transparent plastic material and â € œtranspirantâ € to gases (eg: PVC) in order to allow the release of O2 and any excess CO2 . The reactor is resistant to chemicals, UV rays, is non-toxic, is easy to work mechanically (in terms of sealing, drilling, welding) and is resistant to mechanical stress and heat.
Examples of suitable reactors are bags in transparent plastic material or PVC pipes as made in some of the existing plants.
The collection of algae is done by gravity by tilting the bag and collecting the saturated fluid, then using mechanical filters with controlled porosity for the primary separation of the algal part from the water.
During normal operation of the plant according to the present invention, any nourishment that may be necessary can be added to the fluid from suitable tanks inserted in the hydraulic plant. The necessary CO2 is blown directly into the system by tapping it from the exhaust fumes of the electricity production system (motor alternator). The water required is in a closed cycle, so it can be checked in advance to avoid the presence of microorganisms and chemical pollution that could reduce the productivity of the plant and prevent the sale of the waste to the cosmetic and feed industry. The plant according to the present invention also has an emptying system for the expected complete replacement of the water which must be provided at a fixed and regular frequency to avoid pollution by waste and metabolites that accumulate during the stages of growth of microalgae.
In the plant according to the present invention, the water is completely immune from chemical and biological contamination, which is not the case in state-of-the-art plants which are located outdoors or which work in an open cycle.
The lighting is optimal and is guaranteed by suitable rows of LEDs or fluorescent lamps placed between the parallel rows of battery bags. In this way, the illumination inside the bags is constant over the entire surface of the reactor, maximizing growth in every position in which the algae is found.
The circulating water is kept at the correct temperature by means of heat exchangers which use either the engine cooling water or the heat exchange with the exhaust fumes.
Furthermore, the plant is free of chemical agents and does not present a risk of explosion or fire, therefore it is economical to operate and can be kept in continuous operation with only supervising personnel.
Again with reference to the attached figure 1, inside said oil extraction and treatment plant, said means for separating the algae collected from unwanted foreign material and impurities comprise: a filtration device 13 suitable for carrying out a first filtration of the algal material collected; a centrifugal separator 14 associated with said tank 1 and adapted to separate said algae collected by said reactor 10 from unwanted impurities; Furthermore, said means for extracting and collecting fuel oil from said algae comprise apparatuses selected from the group comprising ultrasonic sonicators 18 and drying apparatuses 16 and squeezing 17 arranged in cascade.
The filtration devices used can advantageously be of the mechanical type, possibly associated with controlled porosity filters (approx. 2-120 µm). The remainder from the filtration process can be fed back into the reactor for growth.
The phases of oil extraction at this point of the process are as follows: drying, oil extraction and possible treatment of waste.
Drying is necessary since algae contain on average 80% water in this phase. It is therefore necessary to dehydrate them which takes place rapidly by drying in the oven.
The extraction is carried out in mechanical systems and allows to separate the oleic part from the residue which, treated, is destined to industry as a basis for the production of feed or cosmetics. Hence the importance of using uncontaminated water in algal production.
The oil extraction can take place with different methods which are chosen from the group including pressing, enzymatic treatment, extraction using chemical solvents and ultrasonic sonication.
In a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, the extraction is performed by sonication which is a method that allows not only the extraction of the oleic part, but the simultaneous separation from the glycerol which, as mentioned, must not be part of the fuel.
This process is accomplished in an industrial sonicator and avoids squeezing. In practice, the presence of ultrasound and the reagent in the mixture allows the rapid separation of the glycerol which is therefore an exclusive by-product of this phase and is stored and sold to the cosmetic industry.
The oil thus produced is, if necessary, subjected to further filtration by means of suitable filter media of the crude oil 19 and is ready to be used as fuel by a diesel cycle engine - for example the diesel engine of the aforementioned thermoelectric energy production plant - with characteristics similar to diesel oil obtained from petroleum. Finally, the treatment of waste provides that the waste is collected as a dry residue and treated in such a way as to favor its subsequent use, for example as a fuel.
Still with reference to the attached figure 1, in a preferred embodiment of the plant according to the present invention, said thermoelectric energy production plant comprises an internal combustion engine 20 of the diesel type compatible with fuel vegetable oil; an alternator 21 associated with said internal combustion engine; means for feeding said internal combustion engine 20 associated with said means for extracting and collecting fuel oil from said algae; means for extracting and collecting CO222 from the exhaust fumes of said internal combustion engine 20, associated with said means for controlling the quantity of CO2 dissolved in the water contained in said reactor 10 and suitable for conveying the CO2 collected in said process tank 6 in order to feed the chlorophyll synthesis carried out by the algae contained in said reactor 10.
The plant according to the present invention can operate correctly even with external CO2 sources, if located in sites where said CO2 is already available.
Advantageously, moreover, the heat produced by said motor 20 can be used to heat a fluid 23 which is sent to said exchanger 4 of said first hydraulic circuit so as to carry out a first preheating of the water sent to said process tank 6.
