The solution described in the document â € œFBG Strain Sensor With Simple Temperature Compensation Mechanismâ € (Hayano H. and Mita A., Struct. Eng. Earthqu. Eng. J., 22 (2) pp. 167S-173S is also known. ) in which thermal expansion of an element free from external loads and integral with the fiber near the pretensioned Bragg grating is used to obtain said thermal compensation, a solution that is used to make deformation sensors in armored containers equipped with flanges installation.
Tutte i dispositivi noti presentano però diverse limitazioni tecniche, tra le quali: However, all known devices have various technical limitations, including:
- i dispositivi da installarsi con flangie o punti di saldatura sono caratterizzati da un accoppiamento rigido tra elemento sensore e punti di ancoraggio che, quando il sensore à ̈ installato su una superficie irregolare o curva, à ̈ responsabile di una indesiderata sollecitazione a flessione in grado di danneggiare il reticolo di Bragg ed alterare le sue caratteristiche di linearità di misura; - the devices to be installed with flanges or welding points are characterized by a rigid coupling between the sensor element and the anchor points which, when the sensor is installed on an irregular or curved surface, is responsible for an undesired bending stress capable of to damage the Bragg grating and alter its linearity of measurement characteristics;
- il fattore di scala che determina la sensibilità finale del sensore à ̈ stabilito in modo rigido e non variabile dalla posizione relativa tra le flangie di fissaggio e i punti di accoppiamento tra la fibra ottica e il corpo del sensore; - the scale factor that determines the final sensitivity of the sensor is established in a rigid and non-variable way by the relative position between the fixing flanges and the coupling points between the optical fiber and the sensor body;
- devices equipped with thermal compensation with an element free from loads and integral with the fiber are very delicate and can be easily damaged in the presence of shocks and vibrations.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a Bragg grating deformation sensor characterized by mounting flanges capable of tolerating sufficiently large rotations between the installation points without the sensor undergoing harmful bending.
A further object of the present invention is that of realizing a deformation sensor equipped with thermal compensation and characterized by a greater tolerance towards shocks and vibrations.
A further object of the present invention is that of realizing a deformation sensor in which the measurement sensitivity can be adjusted in a semi-permanent way with simple mechanical adjustments.
The previous purposes are achieved by the present invention as it relates to a deformation sensor using a Bragg grating as a sensitive element, coupled to the installation flanges by means of ball hinges, characterized by a thermal compensation system embedded in a gelatin of filling that prevents movement as a result of shocks and vibrations and also characterized by the possibility of adjusting the position of the fixing points of the flanges on the sensor body in order to vary the sensitivity and the amplitude of the measuring range of the sensor itself.
Figure 1 shows a non-limiting schematic sectional representation of a possible variant embodiment of the deformation sensor of this document.
In the embodiment of figure 1, the sensor comprises a body consisting of at least a first element (5) characterized by a hollow cylindrical extension which partially engages in a cavity of at least one second element (6), the cavity of which is crossed by an optical fiber (2) which carries the Bragg grating sensor element (8) inscribed on it and which is made integral with the body elements at points (9a) and (9b), conveniently though not exclusively symmetrical with respect to the length of the sensor, with an appropriate pre-tensioning. The coupling point between the elements (5, 6) of the body can be conveniently sealed by at least one elastic gasket (13) or a rubbery sealant.
At the ends of the body exit, the optical fiber (2) can continue in a protective sheath (1a, 1b) which can be fixed for example by forced coupling with deformable sleeves (3a, 3b) on bushings (4a, 4b).
The elements of the body (5, 6), conveniently although not necessarily in correspondence with the coupling points (9a, 9b) between the optical fiber and the body itself, are semi-permanently coupled to sleeves (21a, 21b) characterized by a spherical shape, to which the clamping elements (14a, 14b 15a, 15b) of the fixing flanges of the sensor to the measuring substrate are coupled. Said clamping elements (14a, 14b 15a, 15b) are characterized by a coupling cavity with the spherical sleeves (21a, 21b) which is shaped according to a combination of at least two conical and / or cylindrical surfaces in order to create a hinge spherical between the sleeve and the pair of installation flanges that mate with it.
The spherical sleeves (21a, 21b) are locked in the desired position, each conveniently although not exclusively, for example each by means of its own locking dowel (22a, 22b) which remains inside the body of the sleeve itself.
The sensor also comprises at least one thermal compensation sleeve (7) integral with a fiber section between the coupling points (9a, 9b) to the sensor body and not including the Bragg grating (8), made of a material with coefficient of suitable thermal expansion and with length between the fixing points to the fiber (2) suitably calculated in such a way as to compensate with its own extension due to thermal expansion the natural thermal drift of the Bragg sensor, reducing the original pre-tension of the optical fiber imposed between the two points fastening (9a, 9b) of the same.
The compensation sleeve (7) is also shaped so that it can slide freely with respect to the cavity of the sensor body (5) which contains it.
The cavity where the optical fiber (2) and the sleeve (7) are housed can also be filled with a suitable type of gelatin (10) injected through at least one hole (11) on the body. Said hole (11) can be subsequently sealed by means of a screw, a chemical sealant or by sliding the annular sleeve (12) which, once brought to the closed position, is locked in position, or with another system.
Figure 2 shows a variant of the representation in figure 1 in which the position of the spherical sleeves (21a, 21b), which can be varied once the screws (22a, 22b) have been released, is symmetrically displaced in such a way that they are at a distance (Lflange) different from the distance (LFBG) between the fixing points (9a, 9b) of the optical fiber (2) to the elements of the body (5, 6) of an appropriate quantity in order to obtain the actual sensitivity value of the desired sensor. Appropriate tick marks and / or indentations on the external surface of the sensor body (5, 6) for locking the screws (22a, 22b) may possibly be present to indicate the correct positioning of the spherical sleeves (21a, 21b) to make sensor configurations having predetermined measurement sensitivity values.
Figure 3 shows some views of axonometric projections and sections of a possible non-binding embodiment of the sensor object of the present invention. The inset (17) shows in particular a plan view of the sensor, while the inset (18) illustrates an elevation view thereof. The boxes (19) and (20) show sectional views of the clamping between flanges and spherical sleeves.
The box (16) finally illustrates a plan view and an elevation view of a detail of the clamping between the flange and the spherical sleeve when they assume a relative position rotated to each other by virtue of the coupling of the spherical hinge they make.
From the above the advantages of the present invention are clear as it relates to a deformation sensor using an optical fiber Bragg grating characterized by fixing points of the flanges hinged to the sensor body by means of spherical hinges, equipped with compensation of the thermal drift of the ™ sensor element, resistant to the possibility of damage due to shocks and vibrations and able to be configured for different sensitivity values and / or amplitude of the measuring range.
Finally, it is clear that modifications and variations can be made to the device described without however departing from the scope of protection of the present invention.
