"SALVAELETTRODO " "ELECTRODE SAVER"
The present invention relates to an electrode protector. More particularly, the invention refers to an electrode protector for an insoluble electrode used as a counter electrode in the continuous electrolytic treatment of metal strips or the like.
In common electrolytic treatments typically comprising plating or continuous acid cleaning of steel sheet strips, semi-consumable or insoluble electrodes such as for example silicon iron, lead, lead alloy or similar electrodes have been used as counter electrode, thus as illustrated, for example, in publication JP-B-53-18167 (where the abbreviation "JP-B" used herein means a examined Japanese patent application publication). For example, in an electrolytic galvanizing line, a sheet of steel to be galvanized is used as the cathode and an electrode of a lead alloy is used as the counter anode. The steel sheet is made to advance at a linear speed, which can reach up to 1-2m / sec, and the end of the steel sheet commonly tends to oscillate perpendicular to the direction of advancement. Furthermore, the distance between the steel sheet and the counter electrode is extremely small, that is about 10 mm on average, for criteria of operating stability, cost saving and eco. In such electrolytic plating lines there are often cases in which the steel sheet being treated hits the counter electrode to the point of causing a short circuit. In the case of lead alloy electrodes, the problem of accidental short circuits has never been much felt as the lead alloy has a behavior that even when it melts locally due to the heat generated during the short circuit, the molten part of the alloy lead immediately absorbs heat as heat of fusion and readily returns to its solid state. However, the lead alloy electrode has the defect of releasing the lead from the electrode by dissolution into the electrolyte solution during electrolysis in relatively large quantities, from 1 to 10 mg / AH, and the dissolved lead is incorporated into the deposit of plating on the products. For this reason, the use of insoluble metal electrodes has been studied, which may comprise substrates of valve metals, such as titanium, provided with a coating containing platinum group metals or their oxides, as described, for example, in publication JP-A-56-47597 (the abbreviation "JP-A", meaning an unexamined Japanese patent application publication). This type of electrode is characterized by the fact that the erosion of the coating is extremely slow, ie about 1/10 1/100 compared to that of the lead electrodes, and it is substantially insoluble and dimensionally stable. For these reasons insoluble metal electrodes are beginning to be used extensively.
However, the use of such electrodes with a metal substrate presents the problem that in the event of a short circuit as mentioned above, not only the coating but also the substrate is severely damaged. In order to prevent the short circuit, the material being treated, such as steel sheet, is prevented from coming into direct contact with the electrode surface for example by placing a mesh of fluorinated plastic or other plastic or a plate of resin or ceramic on the electrode surface. However, in the event that an edge of the steel sheet etc., which travels at high speed, hits the net, this is too easily cut to be reliably used. On the other hand, although the plates may have a better mechanical resistance, their use has the disadvantage that the electrode surface is masked in such a way as to substantially limit the effective electrode area, as these plates have a large area in order to protect the entire electrode surface and this entails the problem of a reduced life of the electrode and a non-uniformity of the electrolytic treatment.
These problems are equally present also in acid cleaning processes by electrolytic and similar methods. These problems are particularly severe in high-speed processes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a saivaelectrode which, when attached to the surface of an insoluble electrode used for the continuous electrolytic treatment of metal strips or the like, masks only a limited area of the electrode surface and presents a robustness sufficient to effectively prevent the short circuit that may be caused by the contact of the electrode with the material being treated, so as to overcome the problems mentioned above.
As described above, an electrode protector which can be attached to the surface of an insoluble metal electrode to be used as a counter electrode in a process of continuous electrolytic treatment of a metal strip or similar material and which is effective in preventing short circuits, should possess sufficient properties insulation and mechanical resistance and, at the same time, do not mask the entire electrode surface. It has been found that these requirements can be satisfied and the above-described object is fully achieved by means of an electrode protector for insoluble electrodes which comprises a reticular substrate, consisting of a corrosion resistant metal, provided with an electrically insulating and corrosion resistant surface coating.
Accordingly, a wire mesh having a sufficient percentage of openings is employed as the substrate of the electrode protector of the present invention. Specifically, an expanded metal mesh, which is normally produced by cutting and stretching a metal sheet, is particularly preferred. However, wire mesh or other similar lattice structures may also be used, such as those fabricated by weaving or interweaving of metal wires, which may be provided with an electrically insulating coating before being woven or braided. Since this metal mesh has many openings and its surface is not uniform, passages are ensured for the electrolyte and for the unwound gas when the same metal mesh structure is attached to the electrode surface and the masked area of the active surface. of the electrode can be reduced to the same contact area with the reticular structure, which is however minimal. A lightly rolled expanded sheet (i.e. in which the thickness of the mesh has been reduced to about 5D% or more of the apparent thickness of the expanded sheet!) May be used, while an expanded sheet that has been heavily rolled (i.e. in which the thickness of the mesh has been reduced to about 50% or less of the apparent thickness of the expanded metal has a larger proportion of flattened area and is not preferred as the area in contact with the electrode surface becomes excessively large.
The wire mesh can have the same shape and size as the electrode to which it must be attached. In general, however, the thickness of the network is preferably 5 mm or less in order to ensure passages for the electrolyte, etc. maintaining an adequate separation distance from the surface of the material to be treated. The percentage of opening in the metal mesh is preferably 70% or greater, preferably 85-90%, in order to reduce the masked area of the electrode surface. The construction material of the wire mesh is suitably chosen from the metals that have sufficient mechanical strength and sufficient resistance to corrosion. Nickel and steel are suitable for use in alkaline solutions, while titanium and titanium alloys, as well as other valve metals, can be used in both acidic and alkaline solutions.
On the surfaces of the metal lattice substrate, a corrosion resistant insulating deposit is formed to ensure the electrically insulating properties of the electrode protector as a contact short circuit prevention structure.
Various materials having adequate insulating properties and mechanical and chemical resistances can be used as the material for said corrosion resistant insulating coating. Preferred examples of these materials include the valve metal oxides, such as titanium, tantalum, zirconium, niobium, etc .; and the oxides of aluminum, magnesium, silicon, etc. and oxide-type ceramics containing these elements. In addition, materials containing carbides, nitrides or similar materials can be satisfactorily used. A coating of such a material can be formed on the wire mesh substrate by a suitable technique, such as the baking coating method or the torch spray coating method.
The electrode protector thus obtained is attached to the surface of an insoluble electrode in a suitable manner such as for example by bolting, so as to obtain an electrode structure. The electrode structure thus assembled is used for the continuous electrolytic treatment of metal strips or in other similar electrolytic treatments.
The electrode of the present invention, which has a structure comprising a corrosion resistant metal mesh substrate and an electrically insulating and corrosion resistant coating on the surfaces of the substrate, has sufficient insulating and strength properties and when used attached to the surface of an insoluble electrode in an electrolytic treatment process effectively prevents the short circuit that could be caused by accidental contact between the electrode and the metal material being treated. In this way, the electrolyte treatment can be safely conducted for long periods of time. Furthermore, since the electrode protector of the present invention has a sufficient percentage of openings, the masked area of the electrode surface to which the electrode protector is attached can be made practically minimal, thereby ensuring sufficient passages for the gas and for the liquid and the The electrode can thus avoid damage which may result from an uneven distribution of the electric current.
The present invention will now be explained in greater detail by referring to the following examples, which should not be interpreted to limit the scope of the invention.
ESEMPIO 1 EXAMPLE 1
An electrode protector was firmly attached by titanium bolts to the surface of 12 insoluble metal electrodes each of which was 30cm wide and 50cm long and which were attached to a current distributor frame of an electrolytic galvanizing line. continuous at high speed for steel sheets.
The electrode protector used was made up of a substrate of expanded metal, obtained from a 1 mm thick titanium sheet, which had openings with the following orthogonal dimensions: LW = 50 mm and SU = 35 mm and a percentage of openings of the 72%. Since the mesh was used without prior rolling, only 10% or less of the electrode surface was substantially masked by the electrode protector. The surface of the titanium mesh was then coated with an a-alumina coating to a thickness of approximately 10 µm by plasma spraying thereby forming an electrically insulating and corrosion resistant coating.
The aforementioned high-speed galvanizing line was practically operated for about 6 months using the electrode structure consisting of the insoluble metal electrodes and the above described electrode protector attached to them. As a result it was found that despite that part of the electrode protection net had been cut by impacts with the steel sheets during the continuous treatment, the electrode surface was completely free from damage, such as those caused by short circuit, resulting to have been effectively protected.
ESEMPIO 2 EXAMPLE 2
An electrode protector having a thickness of about 3.5 mm and an opening percentage of about 90% was obtained by applying a paste coating, containing titanium oxide and silicon oxide, for a thickness of about 0.2 mm to a substrate, which was essentially a mesh of 1mm diameter titanium wire, and subsequently heating and calcining the applied paste to? 00oC to form an insulating coating. The electrode protector thus obtained was attached to the surface of an electrode in the same way as in example 1, and the resulting electrode structure was used as a positive current impressed electrode in an acid cleaning electrolytic treatment line for stainless steel. During a continuous march of about 2 years, collisions occurred between the electrode protector net and the treated material. When part of the network was damaged as a result of collisions, it was replaced with a new network. When the coating on other parts of the same network of the electrode protector detached as a result of collisions and the titanium substrate was exposed in those regions, the acid cleaning treatment by electrolytic method was continued, leaving the titanium area thus exposed without any treatment. The final result was that the acid cleaning treatment by electrolytic method could be carried out without problems and that the electrode surface was not subjected to any damage and no unevenness in the distribution of the electric current was observed.
