Description
The present invention generally relates to gas turbine engines and, more specifically, to an improved rotor assembly for gas turbine engines which incorporates an inertial damper designed to dampen selected vibrations transmitted from one portion to the other of the rotor assembly.
Gas turbine engines have a rotor assembly rotatably mounted within a stator. The rotor assembly typically has a plurality of axially spaced rows of circumferentially spaced vanes mounted on a main shaft of the rotor. In the compressor stage of such a rotor assembly, the blades of each row progressively decrease in size in the direction of flow, i.e., the blades of each row are smaller than the blades of the adjacent row immediately upstream.
All'albero ausiliario è operativamente accoppiato un avviatore. A bevel gear is typically mounted on the main shaft of the rotor and is continuously meshed with a cooperating auxiliary bevel gear placed at the end of an auxiliary shaft. This auxiliary shaft is commonly known as the power take-off shaft which often has its longitudinal axis arranged so as to be perpendicular, or at least oblique, with respect to the axis of the main shaft. A starter is operatively coupled to the auxiliary shaft. Thus <*> for example during engine start-up the starter rotates the auxiliary shaft up to about 7000 revolutions per first. This movement is transmitted through the bevel gears of the auxiliary and main shafts in order to rotate the rotor assembly. After the engine has been started, the rotation of the main shaft causes the rotation of the auxiliary shaft. In this way the starter is conventionally disconnected while an alternator, which is connected to the shaft, supplies electricity to the system of which the engine is part. Therefore the auxiliary shaft is mechanically coupled to the main shaft of the rotor throughout the entire operating speed range of the main shaft which typically reaches up to about 46,000 revolutions per first.
In certain engine configurations it was observed with strain gauges or force transducers that the fifth stage compressor blades were subjected to excessive levels of vibratory stress at or near a resonant frequency during engine cranking. It was noted that the stress due to the resonant frequencies of these blades had an apparent relationship with the number of teeth of the conical gear of the rotor assembly. More particularly it was observed that the fifth stage blades were excited at "38 / rev" (ie 38 times the rotor speed), a number that coincides with the number of teeth of the conical gear of the rotor assembly. From this observation it was deduced that the vibrational excitation of the fifth stage blades was attributable to a source of vibrations transmitted by the auxiliary gear to the bevel gear of the rotor assembly and, by means of the torsional vibration of the rotor shaft, to the fifth stage of the compressor.
Therefore an object of the invention is to realize an improved rotor assembly of a gas turbine engine.
Another purpose of the invention is to create a rotor assembly in which a particular row of blades is not vibrated in response to the application of a vibration source to a particular portion of the rotor assembly.
Another object is to provide an improved inertial damper to be used in a gas turbine engine, a damper that is effective in damping the vibrations transmitted from a first portion of the rhetorical assembly to another portion thereof.
Another object is to provide an improved inertial damper which is effective in damping selected vibrations transmitted by a bevel gear of the rotor to the row of blades of the fifth stage.
Another object is to provide an improved inertial damper to be used in a gas turbine engine which can be easily incorporated into the configuration and physical limits of an existing engine with minimal modifications of the existing parts and components.
An improved gas turbine engine rotor assembly including an improved inertial damper is disclosed. The improved damper is suitable for being mounted on the rotor assembly in order to exert a predetermined force on a support surface made on the rotor assembly and on another support surface made on the bevel gear. The value of this preload force, the polar moment of inertia of the damper and the coefficient of friction between the damper and the two bearing surfaces are selected so that the vibration excitation transmitted through the bevel gear is effectively damped and does not vibrate another portion of the rotor assembly (e.g., fifth stage vanes) at or near a resonant frequency, all in order to achieve a preferred high-speed fatigue life of such palette. At the same time, this inertial damper can be easily incorporated into an existing type and configuration of engine with a minimum of modifications to the other structures. Thus effective damping is achieved with minimum cost and minimum effort.
In a preferred embodiment the improved damper is in the form of a cylindrical tube. The opposite ends of this tube are adapted to rest against opposite and facing support surfaces of the rotor and bevel gear. The tube has at least two axially spaced rows of circumferentially spaced slots. The wounds of each row are separated by full interruptions and the interruptions of the various rows are circumferentially offset from each other. Thus, the damper is made to be axially flexible and is axially compressed by a predetermined value to make the damper exert the desired preload force on the supporting surfaces.
L'invenzione secondo le preferite realizzazioni, unitamente ad altri suoi scopi e vantaggi, viene più particolarmente descritta nella seguente descrizione dettagliata da prendere in considerazione unitamente ai seguenti disegni, dove: The invention according to the preferred embodiments, together with its other objects and advantages, is more particularly described in the following detailed description to be taken into consideration together with the following drawings, where:

Figure S is a vertical cross-sectional view of the improved damper, viewed generally along the line 5--5 of Figure 4. Referring initially to Figure 1, a portion of an improved gas turbine engine according to a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown. generally with 10.
The motor 10 is shown as generally comprising an elongated stator 11 and inside it a rotor assembly 12. The stator comprises an outer casing 13 and an inner casing 14 which define between them an annular passage for the flow which extends towards Γ backward from a front inlet 15 to an intermediate portion of the compressor generally indicated at 16. A plurality of circumferentially spaced and radially extending guide vanes, indicated at 18 respectively, join the inner and outer shells of the stator near the inlet.
L’anello esterno del cuscinetto 21 è opportunamente fissato all’estremità marginale posteriore -dell’involucro interno. The rotor assembly 12 shown has a main shaft 19 suitably pivoted on the stator at the front end by means of a rear bearing 21 while the rear end of the shaft 19 is suitably connected to a high pressure turbine (not shown) which drives the shaft 19. Coaxially within shaft 19 extends a drive shaft 17 supported at the front end by a front bearing 20 while the rear end of shaft 17 is suitably connected to a low pressure turbine (not shown) which rotates shaft 17 to drive, for example, a propeller or helicopter rotor. The outer ring of the front bearing 20 is secured to the inner casing by means of a plurality of circumferentially spaced radial supports one of which is indicated 22. The outer ring of the bearing 21 is suitably fixed to the rear marginal end of the bearing. internal casing.
The compressor portion 16 includes five axially spaced rows of circumferentially spaced rotor blades extending outwardly from the main shaft 19 within the annular passage defined between the disc on which the blade roots are mounted and the outer shell. 13. The five rows of blades are respectively indicated with 16A, 16B, 16C, 16D and 16E. A row of stator deflectors is arranged upstream of each row of blades, while each combination of rows of blades and blades is called a "stage". The physical size of the blades of each row decreases progressively in the direction of flow along the engine, that is, the blades 16A of the first stage are larger than the blades 16B of the second stage which are larger than the blades 16C of the third stage and so on. A centrifugal compressor 23 is also mounted on the main pUjerp. 19 behind the row of blades of the fifth stage.
A forward facing bevel gear, generally indicated at 24, is mounted on the main shaft of the motor just in front of the bearing 21. This bevel gear 24 is continuously meshed with a bevel gear or auxiliary gear 25 attached to the inner marginal end of an auxiliary shaft 26 or power take-off shaft. A starter motor 28, shown in exploded and aligned relationship to the motor, is normally mounted on the stator and is disengageable meshed with the auxiliary shaft 26. During engine start-up, the starter 28 is operated to operate selectively rotate the main shaft 19 of the rotor with respect to the stator. However, after the engine is started, the starter 28 is disengaged. Other components downstream of the improved engine, such as the combustor and the high and low pressure turbines, have been omitted for the sake of clarity.
The portions of the engine now described are conventioned. However in use it was observed that the fifth stage blades 16E showed reduced fatigue life at high cycle due to an apparent resonance at or near a particular rotor speed. More particularly, it was observed that this resonance occurred during restarting at rotor speeds up to about 7000 revolutions at the first of the shaft 19 of the rotor. Since the rotor speed range is from 0 to about 46000 rpm per first, the rotor went through a resonant induction speed each time the engine was started. Strain gauges were then placed on the fifth stage vanes in an attempt to identify the source of the vibrations that induced this vane. In analyzing the data provided by these strain gauges, it was noted that the stresses on the blades at or near the critical rotor speed (ie about 7000 revolutions per first) had a frequency of 38 / revolution. Since the bevel gear 24 had 38 teeth, this suggested that the auxiliary gear 25 transmitted vibrations to the bevel gear which caused the fifth stage blades to vibrate at or near a resonant frequency. Therefore, the improved damper was designed, generally indicated with 29 in figure 1, and it is configured so that it can be operationally mounted on the rotor assembly 12 with a minimum of modifications to the remaining existing structure of the engine.
With reference now to Figure 2, the pertinent portion of the motor is shown, again comprising the main shaft 19 of the rotor, the bearing 21, the bevel gear 24, the damper 29, a nut 30, the auxiliary shaft 26 and a gear 23. The other engine structures which are secondary to an understanding of the improved damper have been omitted from FIG. 2 for the sake of clarity.
The auxiliary shaft 26 is shown rotating about the y-y axis which is perpendicular to the longitudinal x-x axis of the rotor and it has a lower end fixedly mounted on the gear 23. The auxiliary shaft 26 is shown rotationally pivoted. in a bearing 31 the outer ring of which is adapted to be mounted on the stator portion of the motor. The gear 23 has the teeth, facing downwards and forwards, arranged in continuous engagement with the teeth, facing upwards and true left, of the bevel gear 24.
The illustrated portion of the shaft 19 is shown with an elongated tubular element along the horizontal axis x-x and has an external surface which sequentially comprises in the relevant part: a horizontal cylindrical surface facing outwards 32, an externally threaded portion 33 , a vertical annular surface 34 facing left, a horizontal cylindrical surface 33 facing outward, an outward facing surface 36 defining groove teeth, a horizontal cylindrical surface 38 facing outward, an annular surface vertical 39 facing left and a horizontal cylindrical surface 40 facing outwards and continuing from there towards the rear. The other details of shaft 19 are considered secondary for a fundamental understanding of the invention and have not been illustrated. The rotor shaft is able to rotate around the x-x axis with angular speed from 0 to about 46,000 revolutions per first.
Referring now to Figures 2-5, the damper 29 is shown as a horizontally elongated cylindrical tube interposed for compression between the bevel gear 24 and the nut 30. As better shown in Figure 4, the damper has a vertical annular face 71 d left end, a right end vertical annular face 72, a horizontal cylindrical outer surface 73 and a horizontal cylindrical inner surface 74. The inner margin of the left end face 71 of the damper is arranged to engage the surface of the damper. support 66 of the nut. The right end face 72 of the damper is arranged so as to engage the bearing surface 58 of the bevel gear. The inner surface 74 of the damper 6 spaced from the surface 68 of the nut to create up to about 0.05 mm (2 mil) of maximum diametrical clearance to prevent unwanted imbalance due to eccentricity of the damper 29. A minimum diametrical clearance of about 0, 0127 mm (1/2 mil) is preferred to prevent locking of the damper 29 and to allow for unimpeded circumferential movement.
As best shown in FIGS. 3-5, the preferred form of damper 29 is made with two axially spaced rows of circumferentially spaced through slots while there are three such slots in each row. The two rows are preferably made in the central portion of the damper while the slits of the left row are arranged to the left of the axially median point of the damper and while the slits of the right row are arranged to the right of this midpoint. Thus in the preferred embodiment the left and right rows of slits are centered around this midpoint. The slots of the left row are indicated respectively with 75 and the full or interruptions between them are respectively indicated as 76. Similarly, the slots in the right row are respectively indicated with 78 and the full or interruptions between them are respectively indicated with 79. slots of each row respectively occupy arches of approximately 110 while the full interruption portions occupy arches of approximately 10? The slots and the solid parts of the two rows are equally sized and proportionate but are circumferentially offset from each other as shown in figure 5. If desired, these slots can be obtained by means of a conventional electric discharge processing *. The purpose of these rows of slits is to make the damper flexible in compression in the axial direction. Thus the damper has a relatively low elasticity in the axial direction.
The damper is mounted on the rotor assembly as shown in FIG. 2 with the right end face 72 engaging the bearing surface 58 of the bevel gear and with the left end face 7 1 abutting the bearing surface 58 of the bevel gear. support 66 of the nut. The damper is formed to have a particular uncompressed axial length and the nut is configured to have a predetermined smaller axial dimension between the right end face 64 and the abutment surface 66. Hence, when the nut is screwed onto the rotor so that the end face of the nut fully engages the surface 58 of the bevel gear, the damper is axially compressed by a known size (i.e. the difference between the uncompressed axial free length of the damper and the axial distance between the bearing surface 66 and the end face 64 of the nut). The elasticity of the damper, coupled with its axial compression to a known extent, causes the left and right end faces of the damper to exert a preload force on each of the bearing surfaces 66 and 58 of the nut and gear respectively. conical. In one specific embodiment, the damper is configured such that this preload force is approximately 44 SN (10 lbs). The preload force is chosen to give maximum damping for each application.
Furthermore, the damper 29 is configured and dimensioned so that the value of this preload force, the coefficient of friction between the end faces of the damper and the facing supporting surfaces and the polar moment of inertia of the damper are such that both the end faces 71 and 72 of the damper 29 "slip" or slide with respect to the bearing surfaces 58 and 66 when the rotor is twisted by the conical gear 24 during start-up in order to dampen the vibrations transmitted by the gear conical through the shaft or through other structure that conducts vibrations to the excitable portion of the rotor, such as the fifth row vanes.
Specifically, the improved rotor assembly 12 according to the preferred exemplary embodiment of the invention comprises the damper 29 which dissipates the vibrational excitation energy by friction and which predeterminedly includes sufficient axial flexibility to make the damper 29 practical without compromising the structural integrity. when running at a high rotational speed up to about 46,000 rpm.
Damping is achieved by selecting the polar moment of inertia of the damper 29 and the frictional force between the damper 29 and the bearing surfaces 58 and 66 to cause deliberate relative torsional slippage between them when the bevel gear 24 is vibrated to a predetermined frequency such as that which occurs due to the 38 / rev excitation of the bevel gear 24.
Se si ha un moderato valore di attrito, tale attrito dissipa l’energia di vibrazione torsionale a causa dello slittamento torsionale fra lo smorzatore 29 e le superfici d’appoggio At such a condition of excitation, the bevel gear 24, the shaft 19 and the nut 30 vibrate or oscillate torsionally and the damper 29 tends to counteract this vibration due to its polar moment of inertia. If the frictional forces between the damper 29 and the bearing surfaces 58 and 66 are relatively low, the damper 29 tends to remain at the nominal speed of rotation of the shaft 19 and not to follow the vibrational movement of the bevel gear 24 If the frictional forces are only relatively high, the damper 29 follows the bevel gear 24 and vibrates with it and effective damping does not occur. If there is a moderate friction value, this friction dissipates the torsional vibration energy due to the torsional slippage between the damper 29 and the supporting surfaces
Therefore the polar moment of inertia and the axial preload of the damper 29 are chosen according to a compromise to ensure that the resistance to torsional forces due to the polar moment of inertia becomes larger than the frictional forces due to the axial preload of the damper 29 e] the predetermined condition that causes the torsional excitation. In this condition, the contact between the damper 29 and the support surfaces 58 and 66 is such as to allow a torsional slip which dissipates the excitation energy by friction.
An accurate axial preload value on the damper 29 is required to ensure slippage of the damper 29 at a predetermined level of torsional vibration. Although the damper 29 may be not notched, it would be relatively rigid axially and the dimensional tolerances of the damper 29 with respect to the bearing surfaces 38 and 66, required to ensure a predetermined axial preload, would be substantially small and impractical. The axial preload could also be generated using an additional spring biasing means but this would thus be relatively more complex and should be more efficient at relatively high rotational speeds.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment, the slots 75 and 78 are made to provide an element (i.e. the damper 29) which not only ensures friction damping but also has inherent relative axial flexibility due to the slots 75 and 78. The axial flexibility permits axial compression of the damper 29 between the bearing surfaces sufficient to ensure an accurate and relatively low value of axial preload force. For example, the axial preload force of 44.5N (10 pounds) of the preferred embodiment was obtained by axially compressing the damper 29 between the bearing surfaces 58 and 66 to the extent of 0.254 mm (10 mil).
Since the slots 75 and 78 are oriented in the circumferential direction, no undesirable stress is generated on the damper under the strong centrifugal loads that occur at high rotational speeds up to about 46,000 rpm. Furthermore, the damper 29 maintains adequate structural integrity and maintains a constant preload at all speeds.
The improved rotor assembly of the engine and the damper can accommodate many changes and modifications. For example, if desired, the damper may be provided with more than two axially spaced rows of circumferentially spaced slots and they may not necessarily be symmetrically disposed with respect to the axial midpoint of the damper. The slots of each row can be made by saw cutting or in any other way as desired. Various spacers (not shown) could be used between bevel gear 24 and inner ring 43 of the bearing and / or between inner ring 43 and shaft 19. Engaged surfaces of damper, nut and bevel gear (i.e. the surfaces 66, 71 and the surfaces 72, 58) can be suitably finished (i.e. polished, roughened, etc.) so as to determine a pre-selected coefficient of friction.
